Suggestions main page

Hi I've been looking at the Wiki and I was wondering if it's possible to add/change a few things. I think if the following changes are implemented it could boost member contribution and help new fans.

Add a short synopsis that introduces the series to new fans. For example:
Fairy Tail is a manga series written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima. The story centers around the adventures of Natsu Dragneel, a member of the wizard guild Fairy Tail, as he searches the fictional world of Earth-land for the dragon Igneel. During his quest, he makes a bunch of friends and enemies.

Contribution box
Fairy Tail is a wiki dedicated to everything about the Manga and Anime Fairy Tail created by Hiro Mashima. We aim to archive Fairy Tail and all related material. And as a fan of the series you can help us out! Join our many Guilds and see where you can lend your many talents. Be part of our journey into making the Fairy Tail Wiki the best one ever!

Instead featured picture a featured villain
This triggers the visitor to go to that page and see why it's featured.

Spoiler warning
Add a spoiler warning before getting to the featured article section. That way readers don't accidentally read the latest developments in the series. --Zuleika B (talk) 09:55, July 12, 2019 (UTC)

In my opinion adding a Adding a short synopsis that introduces the series to new fans is not needed since such intro already exist in the Fairy Tail (Series) page since that page itself is about the fairy tail series as a whole. Adding it in the mainpage makes it seems that the wiki is only limited to the main manga which already ended and the anime series which is about to end but its actually not since the whole wiki also has infos from other sources such as spinoffs, movies, games and more aside from the main manga and anime series. I think the intro itself should be more generalized or neutral instead of only focusing stuffs about the manga and anime.

As for the contribution box i think that can be added in the mainpage but the wiki guilds are currently inactive and promoting it to have members while no trusted and active editor to oversee it will be counterproductive since people who wants to contribute should follow a uniformed format and quality all over the wiki. At best if they really want to contribute then they can just do it on their own for now and familiarize with the wiki's format and policies. Back then there are random editors who wanted to join the guilds without actually ever contributing to the wiki.

As for changing the featured image to featured villain i personally don't agree with it for now since various iconic villains are already listed in the mainpage making it redundant, next switching from one villain to another will be very limiting since there aren't that many villains that are worth featuring and at most a lot of them were already featured before so it's likely that they'll just be repeated over and over again compared to a fairy tail image being featured which is more broader like in the past we also featured movie posters to promote the movies, manga image to promote the latest manga being released and now anime images to promote the latest anime episode. So i think since the anime series is about to end its better to focus on that first and once its over the featured image could then focus on the fairy tail sequel images to promote it too.

When it comes to adding a Spoiler warning for the featured article i believe it's unnecessary since the whole wiki is already filled with spoilers. Even by just using the internet will have anyone be exposed to spoilers be it fan arts, social medias, blogs, forums, videos, wikipedia pages and news articles. The way this wiki sees it is that once the latest fairy tail related informations were released then encountering spoilers everywhere should already be expected. Im sure even if this wiki never existed spoilers will still be unavoidable especially when the main manga has already ended years ago and the anime series is about to end soon. Hi. I'll begin slightly off-topic: please, whoever did it, revert the changes done to the character portal. It looks ugly with three rows, not to mention that the space between row 2 and 3 is smaller than between row 1 and 2. The single manga picture makes it look really bad. Such changes should be discussed first. @LG, @Nc

Short synopsis

I'm fine with this. If it's a short paragraph that won't take much place, it can only help.

Contribution box

As LG mentioned, the guilds on the wiki haven't been in function for a long time, however, there are still leftover jobs, so I'd suggest condensing them into a single "guild" page - i.e. list all the tasks that need to be done in a clever format (summaries, pages, pictures needed, etc.) and then link that on the main page.

Featured villain (or any other type of character, really...)

I'd start doing this after the anime is over. For now, it features an image from each new episode every week, for a week. I'd like to keep doing this until the end of the series' run and then start featuring other things.

Spoiler warning

I also don't think the spoiler warning is necessary. It never was. It's obvious that the wiki is full of information about the series, so entering it while not caught up is just asking for obvious problems.

Thank you guys for considering my suggestions. I believe the contribution part is the most important one and putting the tasks on a single page would greatly boost contributions. I'll keep track of these pages (and on discord) and see where I can help. Zuleika B (talk) 07:14, July 15, 2019 (UTC)

I'll get to making the page as soon as I have some free time then.  Miskos3  Message  07:48, July 15, 2019 (UTC)

Rows Voting

This discussion is closed. The result of this discussion is:
2 rows
Please do not edit this discussion.

Voting for 3 rows character portals, top 2 rows are main/prominent side characters, both row all villains. Other wikis like my hero academia manage 3 rows fine plus it's outdated like with alot of things on the wiki, 14 characters doesn't express well FT's big cast and it'll encourage more users to click on few characters they're curious on and possibly edit. Alvarez is longest story arc with no reflection in the character portals. Me and Lightning both thought it looks fresh and updated, just removing it is disencouraging when it comes to editing for me when the wiki doesn't have many editors anymore so for the ones that still edit it's refreshing... that's my case, it adds to the wiki and takes away nothing, adds more variety and I've already looked at the coding and it's fine and everything is readable

We have an entire Characters page that displays how big the cast of FT is; the point of the portal was always to display the same amount of protagonists and antagonists, and there is virtually no reason to change it. As I said, from visual point of view, it was bad; three rows just don't look good with our design and even the MHA one is questionable, but they also don't have the final row with the guilds, in our case it actually creates 4 rows that take up a huge amount of space and it just looks bad. At MHA wiki, they have other elements on the page that are big(ger), so it works somewhat. It wouldn't, and didn't here. Not to mention the space between rows not being the same, and that one manga image being out of place, both visually and otherwise. Also, in the future maybe consult other active users about such major changes.  Miskos3  Message  15:33, July 16, 2019 (UTC)

Hi guys! 久しぶり! After going back and looking at the proposed portal change... I tend to agree with Misk. >__< Three rows for a character portal in general doesn't bother me and the three row portal works for the MHA main page, but for our main page it does indeed make it look clunky rather than sleek (as it was intended). I will say though that perhaps Minerva should be switched out with Acnologia or someone else. :/ Gomen. Iam...    JakuhōRaikōben16:33,7/16/2019

Mard Geer in the row

I noticed that the thumbnail used for the row is different to the profile photo in Mard's Character page. I checked all the other ones and they all seem to match with their own character page, and only Mard is different. Should it stay with the consistency to Mard's thumbnail be the same with the character page or change the character page to match with the homepage thumbnail. Tonyojimbo (talk) 07:29, August 8, 2019 (UTC)

We can just leave it as it is since the there was a vote on mard geer's profile image and the image seen in his personal page was voted by the majority. If we used that same image for the main page then it will create an inconsistent format with the rest of the profile photos listed in those rows.

So in the end mard geer's profile page will have the image voted by the majority of the editors and his image for the main page will follow the used by the rest for the sake of consistency in the main page.LightningGeistRead about Laxus? 08:45, August 8, 2019 (UTC)

Reddit Discord replacing the wiki chat

Good Day, User:AstonishingSpiderMan brought up the idea of replacing the current wiki chat with the fairy tail discord used by the fairy tail reddit. I will be posting the things we have discussed below and I am hoping veteran fairy tail wiki editors would chime in since it would be very suspicious if there would be a surge of new users responding to this thread out of nowhere.

Here is what we have talked about:

So from the moment I got into Fairy Tail; I wanted to have most if not all avenues that discuss the series connected with one another. This does not mean I would run every avenue or that I wanted control over all of them, the opposite I wanted each avenue to be its own thing but be interconnected like the guild. No matter where you chat to know that you'd be welcomed in the other forums and appreciated. I wanted the passion of Mashima to be shared by all that's why SorcererWeekly (the site to find the spin off and the sequel) is a thing and why discord became a thing. Simply put, I want there to be a hub for all things Mashima and all things EZ and FT. With a decent following on Discord and on Reddit we want to continue to grow and incorporate more of the fandom and different parts of the fandom. The wikia has always been one place I wanted to incorporate more but with some resentment from godisme2 and myself there was never a real opportunity, I want us to get past that so we can make these places active. Now, what will the Wikia gain out of this on Discord:

1. There will be an official discord for it ----> https://discord.gg/fairytail where you'll be able to discuss the newest releases, have a section of your own (more on this later), and be able to instantly communicate with others in the fandom to help grow and improve what you would want to.

2. Discord is basically instant chat with channels and categories (sections), I apologize if you knew this already. On the discord you and your staff will have:

a. Dedicated Server Roles (FT Wikia Admin) b. Dedicated Channels (help discuss among yourselves any changes or updates you wish to make to the ft wikia pages) c. Will have access to new user base that could help with the wikia and continue the hard work the users and admin do in ft wikia.

Now, I am sure you are wondering okay but who are you? Well I run the Fairy Tail and Edens Zero reddit pages. Founded and run SorcererWeekly. I'm a huge fan and advocate for Mashima and the series he provides us. Above all that I'm just a guy who wants to have Mashima's fandom all connected. AstonishingSpiderMan (talk) 17:04, February 7, 2020 (UTC)

I get what you are saying about having all things be connected with each other and i appreciate it. As for the having an official discord where we'll be able to discuss the newest releases, have a section of our own, and be able to instantly communicate with others in the fandom to help grow and improve what the wiki would want to is promising. But i would like to share my thoughts about it too.

The reason why this wiki did not incorporate an official discord to replace the wiki chat is due to the lack of active fairy tail wiki members that can take on the responsibility to moderate the said discord. Since the main series have ended a lot of active and veteran users moved on and prioritized with other things such as real life responsibilities, those users who are still active here are for the most part are juggling their personal time while also helping out the wiki as much as they can.

If a discord is going to be connected to the wiki its very likely that due to limited active members that there might be no one who can manage the discord that can represent the wiki. On a personal note i personally dont want to oversee a discord since im already overseeing the wiki and its discussions forum and seeing that the other members of the wiki not as active as before its likely that the others will also not be able to do the same especially since personal responsibilities will also take up a lot of their time.

You've mentioned about dedicated channels which will help us discuss among ourselves on any changes or updates we wish to make to the ft wikia pages. That works too but for a very long time the wiki is set up to have the wiki talk pages be the place where users can discuss fairy tail related concerns and changes for the sake of consistency and documentation, future editors can also look back at it as reference or if a clarification is needed. Let's say a discussion was made in the discord and majority of the participants agreed to something without the wiki's knowledge does that mean what the people in discord decided upon will be implemented? and i am not sure but can you look back on past discussions in the discord that took place months or years ago? Coz in my experience being able to see past discussions about something helped people understand why certain things are the way they are in the wiki especially when there are some people who insist doing their own thing or what they see is right while ignoring what the wiki decided upon as well as its format and rules.

Right now lets say you want to talk about Juvia's page then her talkpage is the main place to do it and nowhere else, if people stopped using the talkpage over the discord then i feel like there will be confusion since such changes was mainly discussed in the discord. I fear is that since most people will favor using the discord then its possible that it will now decide on what will happen to the wiki ignoring the wiki's established policies, rules and format akin to the discord taking over the fairy tail wiki.

You also mentioned that through the discord the wiki will have access to new user base that could help with the wikia and continue the hard work the users and admin do in ft wikia. That is also promising. I do visit the fairy tail reddit from time to time and i know there are people who complains about the fairy tail wiki, I also understand their complaints such as having incomplete summaries and so on.

Based on my experience whenever a new user joins the wiki to edit there is only two outcome first is that they might make an edit that does not follow the wiki's format and policies but after informing them about our format and policies as well as encouraging them to finalize their drafts on their own page to get the used to editing here, they are able to adapt and become good contributors but those kinds of people come and go since the wiki is run by unpaid volunteers afterall, the second is that a person might edit the wiki and insist in doing it their way, ignoring the wiki's format and policies or doing it in a very subjective manner especially if it concerns their favorite characters. Some even make big changes by themselves because they've decided on their own that what they are doing is what must happen without even discussing it with everyone. So in the end people might want to edit but majority of them doesnt want to follow the wiki's format and policies. Similar to the fairy tail reddit's very own wiki having its own guidelines this wiki also have things being implemented for the sake of consistency and uniformity and unfortunately a lot of people tend to ignore it resulting in edit warring and eventually being banned.

What do you think? LightningGeistRead about Laxus? 01:41, February 8, 2020 (UTC)

Sorry for the very delayed response, real life responsibilities have kept me occupied the last few days. Going back to your response, some of these reservations I understand and others I do not. In particular, the one about moderating the Discord. I think there was some misunderstanding because I wouldn't be asking you to moderate the discord, I would simply partner with it. If your staff would like to apply as moderators, they would be able to, however the discord has its own moderation. None of the reddit moderators mod the discord and vice versa. Additionally, the wikia changes that would occur to the pages in your hypothetical would simply be introduced and discussed in the server but ultimately the final decision would be made in the Wikia. The purpose of the partnership is not to make one or the other obsolete but rather help each thrive and continue to grow.

You also made mention that the wiki has a limited number of active members, but linking the discord to the wiki could bring back a sense of active community to the wiki and could bring more activity to the wiki itself, through new users and perhaps even old users returning. A lot of other wikis use discord to communicate and it could help to kickstart the wiki back into greater action. Not to mention that some wikia members are already in this server, which will help increase discussion amongst everyone and create a healthy, thriving environment.

Ultimately like I said, I want to unite discord, reddit, and the ft wikia together where the fandom could coexist and prosper and thrive with our love for Fairy Tail. Each fandom would see an increase in user base and interest because of the other 2 communities. I hope this helps clear some of your reservations. AstonishingSpiderMan (talk) 23:46, February 10, 2020 (UTC)

No problem with the delayed response, everyone have their own real life responsibilities anyway so i understand. As for moderating the discord thanks for the the clarification that we won't be moderating it unless a wiki staff would applied to it. I also like the idea that people can discuss things in the discord but the final documented discussion and voting will still be done in the wiki's talk pages. I also agree and hopeful about having the sense of an active community into the wiki that the discord could bring. Let's say we're finally on board with what you are proposing, how would it be implemented? LightningGeistRead about Laxus? 00:55, February 11, 2020 (UTC)

> Let's say we're finally on board with what you are proposing, how would it be implemented?

Well you would incorporate it to the widgets, essentially where the current chat box of the wikia is, I would of course give you the code to put and from there I would work on stuff from the discord end. Additionally you could also tweet it via the FT Wikia twitter so your audience is aware of it as well. The code itself is

<iframe src="https://discordapp.com/widget?id=176028172729450497&theme=dark" width="350" height="500" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"></iframe>

as far as discord aspect of it I would work on roles, channels, a category to fully incorporate the wikia community, and an announcement for the entire server so they also know about this partnership. AstonishingSpiderMan (talk) 18:51, February 11, 2020 (UTC)

Just chiming in from the Twitter side. I'll be ready to promote whenever you guys get the foundations set up. King of Uncool 20:25,2/11/2020

Ok I get what you're saying but before anything happens I believe it would be best if I post these in the fairy tail wiki talk page for the sake of formality & documentation as well as opening the discussion for everyone in the wiki to see and chime in. Maybe we can wait for a week and if everything goes well after a week then we can officially move forward with it. I believe that is acceptable correct? LightningGeistRead about Laxus? 00:04, February 12, 2020 (UTC)

No problem. Thanks again. AstonishingSpiderMan (talk) 13:52, February 12, 2020 (UTC)

Btw I would like to add that the Edens Zero wiki was created by the editors from this wiki and if i remember correctly the fairy tail editors also made the edens zero discord that is currently used in the edens zero wiki which can be seen here. So as an alternative for merging the reddit discord into this wiki we could integrate the edens zero discord used in the edens zero wiki and making it into a fairy tail and edens zero discord too.

What do you guys think? LightningGeistRead about Laxus? 15:08, February 12, 2020 (UTC)

I'm on-board with this, seems like it would be beneficial for everyone. --Neffyarious (talk) 18:44, February 12, 2020 (UTC)

In terms of the EZ discord, i checked it out and it is inactive whereas the reddit discord is very active and has a large audience, so im not sure how much it'll benefit the wiki if we merged EZwiki discord instead of the reddit one. Michelle Hyena (talk) 20:01, February 12, 2020 (UTC)

I have doubts about how active I'd be, if at all, but I have no issue with adding a Fairy Tail Wiki aspect to the Fairy Tail discord. Disabling the wiki chat seems a little necessary though.

As far as Eden's Zero goes, I don't read it or know what is going on on the wiki, so I'd hold off on making decisions without consulting the active editors there (not sure if anyone already has). King of Uncool 20:20,2/12/2020
