Mage vs Wizard...[]

I been having debate with myself since I began following Fairy Tail, and that's the debate between "Mage" and "Wizard". Despite the term "Mage" is more popular because that's how it was scanslated in the beginning, "Wizard" is the official term that is used in the Manga and the Anime. My question to all of you, is which one should we use, the more popular term "Mage", or the official term "Wizard"? ChaosKnight-{E-mail} 05:29, April 9, 2011 (UTC)

The only time I see wizard is with the title Wizard Saint. Everything else is mage, so that seems fine. Every chapter I read usually, if not always, has mage. The anime says mage too, at least the ones I have seen. Go with "Mage".Zicoihno (Talk to Me) 05:32, April 9, 2011 (UTC)

Hmmm........ while I do prefere Mage since we have it on nearly every page of our site, I think if Wizard is the official term then we might need to go with that. This is similar to the popular names vs. the correct names. Just becuase something is popular doesn't mean it should stay.  Iam...JakuhoRaikoben    05:38, April 9, 2011 (UTC)

I am inclined to say to stick with "Mage", since it is more of a gender-neutral term. In my opinion, "Wizard" is a heavily stereotyped term, one that has most people thinking of males, particularly those crotchety old bearded ones, which is obviously not representative of the entire population of magic-users in Fairy Tail. Horologium4 05:41, April 9, 2011 (UTC)

Um, you guys the term being "popular" and appearing "gender-neutral" aren't necessarily reasons that warrant keeping it the same. While I do agree that it is easier to keep it the same, but if it is in fact the correct term that Mashima intended it to be then we should place it despite personal objections.  Iam...JakuhoRaikoben    06:03, April 9, 2011 (UTC)

This is an old discussion, I know, but the term "wizard" has been increasingly commonplace. Case in point, the English/Japanese name tags in Episode 234 list Fairy Tail as a "Wizard Guild". Fan translations are beginning to adapt the term, too, such as Mangastream's version of Chapter 473. And even though the term "Mage" has been preserved for the most part, we still list Zeref's epithet as the "Black Wizard" (黒魔導士 Kuro Madōshi). Perhaps it's time for a change? SubZeroSilver (talk) 16:39, February 18, 2016 (UTC)

While I personally believe that wizard is the term we should use, as all the official media uses "wizard", no one wants to change it from mage because that's the term we've been using for a long time now, and because it's "gender-neutral" as was said above. Although I think that's actually no reason to completely ignore the Japanese dub, the official English translation (which has been using "wizard" since Del Rey, btw), and even the English dub, I can already tell you the vote would be pretty much a drawn-out shit storm of people who are adamant that it remain the same, and people who think that there is no such thing as official because Hiro Mashima himself doesn't write something out in English. For instance, I talked with Rai about this a few months ago, and his opinion from five years ago is the exact opposite. He thinks Mage is perfectly acceptable.

This wiki is 100% against change. If a term has been used for years, you will never be able to change it-- God · Pray · 20:01,2/18/2016

Guys I'm not gonna lie, I think we should consider changing "Mage" to "Wizard", it really is the proper term, lie subzero said above Zeref is refered to as the "Black Wizard" not "Black Mage" we gotta adapt with the times, it's not "gender-neutral" or bias or whatever since everyone is called a wizard in FT. The vote might be ugly but we should still put on cause they're hasn't been one. my two cents :) 166.216.165.52 22:01, February 28, 2016 (UTC)

I've been wondering this forever, why do we use Mage when official tl uses wizard, hard subs on anime uses wizard, translators for subtitles in the anime uses WIZARD, the heck did Mage come from? I wouldl ike to propose a vote, that it just make sense for us to adapt, if it was Mage then Zeref would be known as "The Black Mage, Zeref" everyone knows that isn't right it's wizard. can i start a vote though? it's only proper plus this has never been voted on thx :)--166.137.240.83 00:01, May 15, 2016 (UTC)

I mean you can, you just can't vote.. I actually agree though NcduruRavens wallpaper (2) 23:38, May 14, 2016 (UTC)

Wizard
  1. Support Support - this has been something I've been wondering for the longest... really since the anime started using the hard sub translations that Kodashna provides, starting in the Sun Village arc. I mean if you need a reason why this is right just look above. It's "Zeref, The Black Wizard" not "Mage". Crunchy uses it, Stream/Panda use it with stream fluctuating between mage/wizard, the fansubs for the anime use it, the hard subs use it... but the Fairy Tail wiki doesn't. The only people who will vote for mage are stuck in 2010. This is the way to go NcduruRavens wallpaper (2) 00:41, May 15, 2016 (UTC)
  1. Support Support - If multiple, OFFICIAL sources were using WIZARD instead of mage, I would then be more inclined to use Wizard in place. Doesn't matter If "Mage" is more "gener-neutral" since the word itself shouldn't need to add a gender in the first place. Also, they ALL mean the same thing in context of Fairy Tail: person practicing magic. JayAaerow (talk)
Mage

Thanks so much :) I hope you all understand my reasoning!!. It just makes the most sense. Mages still be on the page stil.166.137.240.83 00:01, May 15, 2016 (UTC)

No. I'm closing this. You guys have no idea how impractical this change would be, having to change literally 90% of the wiki. Both terms are correct. We decided to go with Mage ages ago. End of the story. Miskos3 Message 07:40, May 15, 2016 (UTC)

Redirect Master[]

Hey I was wondering why fairytail.wikia.com/wiki/MASTER redirects to mage? Well Master and Mage are different things so it shouldn't really be like this. 99.255.218.2 19:18, January 2, 2012 (UTC)

Caster/Holder Magic[]

Since such matter is mentioned in this page as well, I was wondering... Has anyone got a vague idea of where the concepts of Caster and Holder Magic were first mentioned in the manga?

Support Strongly support proposal 1 or 2 - I think it would be better to have a picture like the ones listed above under the S-Class Mage section. I mean, there's nothing wrong with Mira being there, but I think that, that image would be more fitting for a profile picture, not as a demonstration of what an S-class Mage is.

Support Support - 1 or 3. I think 3 best demonstrates the power of an S-Class mage with Gildarts' massive magical power. 1 is decent and is a little clearer. Either work.--GodPray23:23,3/29/2013

Support Support - 1 or 3, but leaning towards 1. Plus it's just a section in the page.. It isnt like the main page picture or anything so 1 will suffice.
