Translation[]
I just wanted to ask and double check if the translation is correct. Because I have looked on several websites and on Manga Stream (according to the spoiler policy, which states that Manga Stream purchases their scans) and the name is specifically spelt, (Chapter 65, page page 18) as "Greige" not "Grayju". The official English publisher, Kodansha, uses "Grayju". The official Italian publisher, Star Comics, uses "Greige". The fan translations also use "Greige" (because it makes more sense).
As someone who knows Japanese, "Grayju" isn’t technically wrong, but it’s also not correct either. The best way I can break it down is like this.
His name is: グレージュ
Gureju (Romaji), Greige (English)
GREY (color) in Japanese: グレー (Gurē)
BEIGE (color) in Japanese: ベージュ (Bēju)
Put them together and you get Gureju/Greige グレージュ
As such, Gureju/Greige is a COLOR of its own that combines the two colors grey and beige. The English pronunciation /ɡrāZH/ is pretty self explanatory. It’s “beige” but with “gr” instead of “b”.
Parent’s names:
グレイ Gurei (Gray)
ジュビア Jubia (Juvia)
Put them together and you get the same name as above:
グレー(Gure/Gre)
ジュ(ju/ige)
OR the more literal combination of "Grayju".
Note: グレー and グレイ are the same thing, they both mean Grey/Gray. Think of it as different spelling.
The katakana for グレージュ is officially read as “Greige” in English. Again, a color combining grey & beige. While it's not "wrong", the translation by Kodansha is too literal and looks very awkward. It’s like saying マクドナルド “Makudonarudo” over “McDonald’s”. While both aren’t wrong, we know the correct English translation is “McDonald’s”. It’s true that グレージュ is a combination of Gray and Juvia’s names (ie - Grayju), but it’s also a color as stated above—just like Gray グレイ is a color name and his dad Silver シルバー is a color name. So the intended spelling is likely “Greige”. Not “Grayju” (which again looks awkward). Japanese uses "Greige" as the spelling for グレージュ on websites and boxes as well.

So like Gray and Silver, the (edo) Gray/Juvia son is named after a color, and at the same time, is a combination of Gray and Juvia’s actual names. Also when you search グレージュ on Google images or twitter, you’ll see many Japanese people showing off their grey/beige (greige) colored hair. The name is impressive. A color AND combination of Gray and Juvia’s names. Therefore, it’s got a double meaning, but “Grayju” only focuses on ONE meaning (combo of the names), so Kodansha's translation takes away from the original Japanese and the color trend in Gray's family. It looks sloppy and lazy, like Mashima put no thought into the name when he clearly did. “Grayju” also doesn’t make much sense in English, and again, looks awkward. But “Greige” does make sense and doesn’t look awkward at all. It’s even got its own definition in Merriam Webster. It’s also a Sherwin Williams paint color, and an actual color in the family of gray.
In sum, both "Grayju" and "Greige" are correct but "Greige" is overall better. I hope Kodansha fixes this in the future.

Thank you for the explanation, and I agree that "Greige" is overall better. While I understand "Grayju" is the official English translation from Kodansha comics, frankly, it just appears at first glance poor translation work and not much effort put into it. You're welcome! And yeah for sure. Just because they are "paid professionals" doesn't mean they are perfect. They make mistakes too. I've come across multiple typos in the 100 Years Quest by Kodansha, and oddly phrased translations. I don't think the translator for 100 Years Quest is too familiar with the original series. For example, they translate Lucy's magic as "star spirit" instead of "celestial spirit", even though it's not technically wrong. Hopefully more people will contact Kodansha directly about these issues, especially the dumb "Grayju" translation.

Zachary1969, please don't sign if you forgot, as it would leave an incorrect timestamp. With that said, Darkhope is right in that it's likely a mistake on Kodansha's part, as we had a few examples before, such as Wraith being Reiss, before it was fixed.

I have an update: there's finally a preview for Volume 10's official translation on Google Books, with further text available through searching for specific terms, and apparently it uses both "Greige" and "Grayju" in the same chapter.

- "My, Grayju, you've gotten so big!" (pic unavailable)
It could be an oversight on the translator's part, or it could be a case where "Ultear" and "Urtear" are both treated as correct (one's the birth name, the other's a nickname), thus retaining both meanings. We won't know for sure unless it's acknowledged in the translator note, if at all, though the text search has yielded no results. SubZeroSilver (talk) 15:01, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

Got word from Rieriebee who also got the volume and it does use Greige (Though oddly still using Grayju in one page). The page will reflect this and be change back to Greige.
