It's just that it's scaled automatically, and even the least amount of scaling destroys the dragon scale look. Here's a version in which the scales are still visible after scaling.

Natsu's skin turns black

Gray protects both Natsu and himself from Memento Mori and his skin turns half black. Afterwards, just before Natsu attacks Mard Geer, Natsu's turns partially black as well. That is, his forehead, the left and right sides of his face and body, and half of his arms (Anime Episode 263: 10:23 - 11:20). Now I'm wondering, is this an early manifestation of Natsu having demon blood himself? Either way, it doesn't seem to matter much, since after a single attack without much effect, Natsu's skin turns back to normal.

Those're the scales of a dragon via Dragon Force. Also, this is a wrong place for your question. Miskos3 Message 18:42, December 30, 2016 (UTC)

What is the right place? I thought it should be mentioned in the article, probably in the Manga & Anime Differences section, which is why I put it here.
Don't Natsu's dragon scales always show up as, well, scales? This is really black, just like Gray is black. Then again, it should probably have been dragon scales, since that fits the situation. That would make it a candidate for the trivia, since it may be a mistake of the anime makers.

No, they are clearly the second anime's take on scales Miskos3 Message 19:17, December 30, 2016 (UTC)
Hmmm... I checked 3 of Natsu's other battles in the second anime. Unfortunately he doesn't show his dragon scales in those, except for about a second in episode 237 at 10:25. At that point in time he shows his regular dragon scales in his face - and no scales on his arm. I like Serena (talk) 23:35, December 30, 2016 (UTC)
The only time Natsu is supposed to show 'dragon scales' is in his 'Dragon Force' mode and the only time he did it during the second anime was in this episode, if my memory doesn't fail me. Miskos3 Message 23:51, December 30, 2016 (UTC)
I see. Nice! Mard Geer recognizes it indeed as Dragon Force. And indeed, it is mentioned both here and in the corresponding manga Chapter 411. Shouldn't we mention it more explicitly, accompanied by a proper picture? And probably in a couple of other articles as well? Currently neither the Natsu Dragneel, nor the Dragon Force articles even mention that it gives the caster dragon scales, just like Gajeel's Iron Dragon's Scales. It's only just now that I realize that Natsu made an extreme effort here, while it seemed so pointless before. He made a breakthrough, achieving a new mode of operation that left him exhausted, similar to when he first used his lightning mode against Max. Because of it, Gray could finish Mard Geer off with his next attack. I like Serena (talk) 01:33, December 31, 2016 (UTC)
It's mentioned here Miskos3 Message 01:44, December 31, 2016 (UTC)
Oh yes, my bad. I overlooked its reference in the Description section of Dragon Force. That article apparently even has a picture of this particular episode. To be fair, the flame rebuke and natural pictures don't do justice to the dragon scale look. And I guess it's an open question whether those scales actually give an improved defense ability, like Gajeel's scales do. I like Serena (talk) 01:58, December 31, 2016 (UTC)
They don't. It's literally a design choice Miskos3 Message 10:22, December 31, 2016 (UTC)

Taking a closer look at the existing picture in its original size, it's actually pretty good. It's just that it's scaled automatically, and even the least amount of scaling destroys the dragon scale look. Here's a version in which the scales are still visible after scaling.
