"I am not alone. I can hear them... I can hear everyone's voices... I can sense everyone's feelings... I am not alone... Everyone's feelings... They support me... They are what give me the will to stand and fight!" |
Natsu Dragneel (ナツ・ドラグニル Natsu Doragoniru) is a Fire Dragon Slayer, a member of Fairy Tail, and the leader of Team Natsu. He is the main male protagonist of Fairy Tail.[1]
Appearance
Natsu is a lean, well-built young man of average height with a slightly tan skin tone, black eyes, and spiky rose-colored hair. Natsu has a scar on the right side of his neck which is visible in the few instances he doesn't wear his scarf.[2] His guild member's stamp is colored red and is located at the top of his right arm, just below his shoulder.[3]
Natsu’s outfit mainly consists of a black waistcoat with gold trimmings over his chest with no undershirt, white knee-length trousers, a thick black wristband on his left wrist, black open-toed sandals and his scarf that he always wears. It is detailed with white scales and was given to him by his adoptive father, Igneel.[4] He has also been known to wear a rolled up comforter strapped across his back, though he rarely carries it in battle.[5] In the year X791, Natsu’s attire slightly changes. He now wears a closed long-sleeved shirt with an open collar with his scarf around it and his right arm is exposed to show his Fairy Tail Guild stamp. Natsu retains the same lower clothing and now wears his wristband on his right wrist.[6]
Personality
Natsu is carefree and reckless in nature. And, despite his constant brawls with the other members of the guild, he is a fiercely loyal and protective friend. Natsu thinks things through in a rather straightforward matter that usually involves taking things “head on”. Even when faced with obvious hostility, he rarely holds a grudge or negative feelings towards an enemy. However, he does, for a short time, hold a grudge against Jellal Fernandes but eventually forgives him and comes to consider him an ally. [7] He occasionally shows compassion for his enemies, such as when Cobra was betrayed by Brain. Natsu rarely shows his perverseness towards the other gender, the only noted instance being when he is seen wanting to peek at the Ladies Bath with the other boys during their training for the tournament.[8]
Natsu continuously tries to prove his strength to others. He has challenged Erza [9], Laxus, Mirajane Strauss, and even Gildarts, all of the current Fairy Tail S-Class Mages, to fight him in the past and has been beaten every single time. Despite his losses, Natsu holds no grudge against them as he considers everyone in the guild as his family, even as far as defending Laxus after his attempt at making the guild members battle with each other. Due to his reckless nature, Natsu’s fights usually ends with widespread destruction. Natsu’s continuous desire to fight causes him to develop great wit in battle, quickly identifying his opponent’s weakness and forms strategies to block his enemies’ plans. There are times that he would defeat his enemies with just wits alone, such as his fight with Toby [10] at Galuna Island. Natsu is also stubborn as he hardly ever admits his defeats.[11]
During Lisanna’s supposed death and disappearance, Natsu would become upset every time someone carelessly brings out her name. Because of this, no one in Fairy Tail ever mentions her to him out of respect for his feelings. [12] All of this changes after Lisanna is discovered to be alive and returns from Edolas.[13]
As a Dragon Slayer, Natsu suffers from motion sickness. This ranges from anything that can be considered mobile to being carried by another person, except for Happy[14] as he considers him family and not transportation. His sickness is at the degree where he can get sick by simply looking at a mode of transport or by just thinking about it. [15] Despite being quite dense, Natsu is shown to be somewhat perceptive, especially when it comes to his friends and their feelings. After his battle with Gildarts during the S-class exam, Natsu has come to learn and understand true fear, and has already used it to help himself and his friends grow. Prior to this event, only Erza’s wrath (albeit for comic relief), transportation and the Magic Council were the only things that Natsu feared.[16]
History
Natsu was found by his foster father Igneel, a powerful Fire Dragon, when he was still a baby. Igneel raised and taught him how to talk, write, and use a form of Lost Magic known as Fire Dragon Slayer Magic. However on July 7, X777, Igneel, along with the other dragons, mysteriously disappeared[17] leaving Natsu alone. He set out to search for the Dragon, and Natsu was eventually found by the master of Fairy Tail, Makarov Dreyar, and joined Fairy Tail where he formed a close sibling-like rivalry with Gray Fullbuster and Erza Scarlet.[18]
One day, Natsu found an egg in the forest east of Magnolia Town. Assuming it to be a dragon egg, Natsu took it to the guild and asked Makarov to make it hatch, but Makarov and Erza taught him that only Natsu could do it by watching over and caring for it.[19] Lisanna offered to help Natsu to raise the egg until it hatched, which Natsu accepted happily.[20] The two built a shack out of straw in the park to keep the egg warm, developing a very close friendship in the process.[21]
The next morning, Natsu discovered that the egg they were taking care of disappeared and assumed that someone had stolen it. After arguing with almost everybody at the guild and fighting with Mirajane Strauss for the egg, Elfman appeared with it and confessed that he only wanted to help Natsu and Lisanna raise it but was too embarrassed to ask. Suddenly, the egg hatched and a a blue cat with wings came out. Lisanna remarked at how everyone stopped arguing and became happy upon the cat’s birth, prompting Natsu to name him Happy.[22]
A few years passed and Lisanna left with her siblings to go on an S-Class job to hunt a giant monster called “The Beast”. Natsu wanted to go but Elfman opposed as he felt he should be the one to care of his family. Lisanna was supposedly killed accidentally by Elfman on the mission after he lost control of himself while attempting to take over the monster. Though Natsu forgave him, he was greatly saddened by the event.[23]
Synopsis
Macao arc
Natsu received a tip from Krov that “Salamander” had been spotted in Hargeon Town.[24] Convinced that the “Salamander” is Igneel, Natsu and Happy travel to Hargeon by train. After getting off, the two stumble across a across a crowd of young love struck women eagerly shouting the name "Salamander." Excited, Natsu breaks into the crowd but, rather than seeing a Dragon, meets a fire Mage claiming to be named Salamander. Downtrodden that the "Salamander" wasn't Igneel after all, Natsu rejects an autograph from the imposter and walks away, causing the Mage's crowd of female fans to attack Natsu.[25] Through his antics, Natsu saves a traveling Mage, Lucy Heartfilia, from the influence of "Salamander's" illegal Charm Magic, which he used to infatuate the crowd of girls. Out of appreciation, Lucy buys a meal for him and Happy, and talks on about her ambition to join a famous guild. After the meal, they part ways.[26]
Later that night, Natsu overhears a conversation that “Salamander” is supposedly a member of Fairy Tail, he instantly becomes suspicious and crashes the party on the Mage’s ship. While on the ship, Natsu discovers Lucy on board as “Salamander” had tricked her into thinking that he could get her into Fairy Tail. The ship, being a mode of transportation, eventually takes its toll on Natsu, leaving him defenseless against his enemies.[27] After being rescued by Happy, Lucy summons her Celestial Spirit Aquarius, who uses her Water Magic to wash the boat and everyone on it ashore.[28]
With the ship on dry land and its rocking motion gone, Natsu regains his vitality and confronts "Salamander," declaring him self to be a member of Fairy Tail and exposing the Mage as an imposter. One of the impostor's crew members reveals his name to be Bora, however, Natsu shows no interest in his identity and is only concerned with his attempts to tarnish Fairy Tail's name. Natsu and Bora fight briefly and Natsu easily decimates Bora and his crew, destroying a major part of Hargeon's port in the process.[29] The fight attracts the attention of the Rune Knights, prompting Natsu and Happy to flee with Lucy in tow. Lucy is initially uneasy, but Natsu, knowing that Lucy wants to join Fairy Tail, invites her to join, and she happily accepts.[30]
Upon returning to the guild in Magnolia Town with Lucy, Natsu angrily attacks Krov for giving him false information on the "Salamander,"[31] starting a fight which swiftly evolves into a full-scale brawl. The unruly Mages are stopped by Makarov Dreyar[32] Not too much later, Natsu goes up to the guild's job request board to find work for food money.[33] While picking out a job, Natsu overhears Romeo Conbolt, the son of Fairy Tail's Macao Conbolt, complaining to Makarov as to why his father has not yet returned from his job on Hakobe Mountain to slay Vulcans. Empathizing with Romeo's troubles, Natsu leaves together with Happy to find Macao.[34] The two are accompanied by Lucy, who is now an official member of Fairy Tail. The three reach the snowstorm-ravaged mountain where they are attacked by a Vulcan, which whisks Lucy away to its cavern lair at the peak of the mountain.[35]
Thinking that this particular Vulcan is responsible for Macao's disappearance, Natsu chases the Vulcan to its lair and demands to know where Macao is. However, the Vulcan tricks Natsu into coming near a hole in the cavern wall and pushes him out of it, sending him plummeting off the side of the mountain.[36] Fortunately, Happy rescues him. Once back inside the cave, Natsu sees Lucy fighting the Vulcan using her Celestial Spirit Taurus and, mistakes the bull spirit to be another monster and sends him flying.[37] He soon defeats the Vulcan, who is then revealed to actually be Macao, having been taken over by the Vulcan.[38] They find Macao to be seriously wounded, having fought nineteen Vulcans before being taken over by the twentieth. Natsu saves his life by burning the wound shut,[39] and returns to Magnolia with his friends to reunite Macao with Romeo.[40]
Daybreak arc
After Lucy gets settled into her new home, she finds that Natsu and Happy have shamelessly invaded it.[41] She tries to get them to leave but it's to no avail. Giving up, she offers the two a cup of tea and teaches them a little about Celestial Spirits. Her demonstration involved the summoning of Plue, the Canis Minor. Plue suggests that they form a team, to which Natsu agrees to, and in turn, Lucy does.[42] Their first mission is to infiltrate a mansion and steal a book.[43]
When the team arrives at Shirotsume Town, They eventually make their way to their client's house, where Kaby Melon details their mission and stuns the three of them with the announcement that the reward had increased ten times in value.[44] Impassioned, they head towards the mansion where Lucy is interviewed for the maid position by Duke Everlue. She is rejected for being too "ugly" and so they resolve to sneak into the mansion.[45][46] Quietly, they move around the mansion until they are confronted by Everlue's maids whom Natsu instantly defeats. They then discover the library and after a quick search, Natsu locates the book DAYBREAK. Natsu is about to burn it when Lucy snatches it from his grasp as she saw it was a book by the famous author, Kemu Zaleon, and begs for him to let her keep it.[47]
Just then, Everlue dives up from the ground, having previously held back to see what they had been up to, and calls on the Vanish Brothers to deal with them. However, Lucy declares that there was a secret in the book and runs off, asking Natsu to buy her some time. Everlue goes after her, interested about the secret, and Natsu tells Happy to follow them while he dealt with the brothers.[48] After a brief fight with the Vanish Brothers, Natsu quickly defeats them and grabs the head maid when she begins to move.[49] Consequently, when Everlue summons his head maid, who is actually the Celestial Spirit Virgo, he is brought to Everlue's location. Lucy shouts for him to deal with Virgo while she defeats Everlue. He complies, delivering her a powerful blow.[50]
After defeating Everlue, Lucy makes them return the book to their client, Kaby, who then finds out the truth about the book, and to whom it was truly meant for. The group decides to not take any payment for the job, much to Lucy's dismay, since they didn't destroy the book, as their job had stated.[51]
Lullaby arc
After their mission, Team Natsu returns to the guild, and Natsu gets into a fight with Gray once more. Loke then warns them that Erza has finished her job, and is on her way back to the guild. Natsu and Gray immediately cease their antics, and comically acts like best friends. Upon her arrival, Erza calls for the two and compels them to assist her in a mission, much to their horror.[52] When they arrive at the train station, Natsu compromises with Erza, saying that he would only go if she agrees to battle him when they return, to which Erza agrees. On the train, Natsu gets his usual motion sickness, and Erza, in an attempt to make him feel better, knocks him out.[53]
The other members start to discuss the mission, but in the process, forget to wake up Natsu, leaving him behind on the train as they head off. [54] Kageyama, a member of the Dark Guild Eisenwald that the group was discussing earlier, tries to start a conversation with him. However, Kageyama attacks him and the two get into a fight with Natsu quickly getting the upper hand when the train stops. During their fight, he notices the Lullaby flute, and before the train starts to move again, jumps out of the train's window and into a Magic four-wheel vehicle driven by Erza.[55][56]
They team return to the train station via vehicle, causing Natsu to be motion sick again, and requiring the assistance of Lucy to drag him to the station.[57] Although they had been denied entry, they enter anyway and are confronted by the members of Eisenwald at the station platform. Upon hearing Kageyama's voice, Natsu revives and saves Lucy from being harmed by one of Kageyama's attacks.[58] Erza then orders him and Gray to go after Erigor, and the two agree to split up to find him.[59]
As Natsu begins his searches, he starts destroying the walls to find Erigor, despite the fact that doors were right next to him.[60] Kageyama sneaks up behind him and attacks Natsu and after they exchange a few blows, he quickly overwhelms him and questions him on the whereabouts of Erigor, just as Erza arrives to question him on how to dispel the barrier of wind around the station. However, to everyone's surprise, Kageyama is suddenly stabbed in the back by one of his allies and Natsu, in rage, attacks the assassin and tries to avenge Kageyama.[61][62]
Team Natsu is then freed from the wind wall by Lucy's new Celestial Spirit Virgo, who apologizes to Natsu for her previous fight with him and he quickly forgives her.[63] Natsu then uses Happy's maximum speed to chase after Erigor.[64] After he runs into him, he proves himself powerful enough for Erigor to use his Storm Mail spell. As the wind armor causes Natsu's fire to be put out and stops him from punching Erigor, Natsu becomes angry to the point of heating his flames using his emotions. Happy notices the effects of the superheated fire on Erigor's Storm Mail and provokes Natsu to increase his fire's heat by appealing to his sense of rivalry with Gray. This sends Natsu into a rage, and he is able to defeat Erigor.[65][66]
When the others arrive, Kageyama steals the Lullaby flute and goes to the Guild Masters' meeting.[67] The team quickly follows and are stopped from saving Makarov by the other Guild Masters, while Makarov convinces Kageyama to give up.[68] Since Kageyama refused to play the flute and finish off Makarov, the flute turns into a huge beast.[69] Seeing this, Natsu teams up with Gray and Erza to take it down.[70] Unfortunately, the team destroys the Guild Masters' meeting place in the process.[71] When the Guild Masters see this they turn around they see that Fairy Tail was already running away except for Natsu who offered to help chase his teammates unaware that he was being chased as well.[72]
Galuna Island arc
True to their agreement, Natsu and Erza begin their battle. But just as they warm up, Erza is arrested for property damage amongst other crimes.[73] To prevent him from recklessly going after Erza, Natsu is transformed into a salamander and is put under a glass to prevent escape. [74] However, it is revealed that it is actually Macao, and as a token gratitude, transformed himself into a salamander to give Natsu enough time to crash Erza’s court hearing wherein Natsu does so. He came to the meeting crudely dressed as Erza proclaiming that he is actually her which results to the both of them being imprisoned for a short time. .[75]
Due to Erza's arrest as a mere formality, the two of them are soon released.[76] Natsu once again tries to fight Erza, but is quickly defeated with one blow.[77] Natsu then tries to pick a fight with Laxus Dreyar but is prevented from doing so by Makarov, who says he isn't allowed to go to the second floor yet.[78] Later that night, Natsu breaks into Lucy's apartment and tries to persuade her to go on a S-class mission with him and Happy to “The Cursed Island”.[79] She initially refuses but agrees later on when she notices that the reward includes a Golden Key.[80] Unable to find someone to ferry them across, Natsu falls on the idea of swimming to the island, but is soon stopped when Gray appears. Just as they begin to fight, one of the sailors who had previously refused notices their Magic and agrees to sail them across. Natsu then quickly knocks Gray out and drags him onto the boat.[81] During the ride to the island, the sailor leading then suddenly disappears just before a tidal wave shipwrecks them on the island's shore.[82]
With Gray now agreeing to help them, they go to their client, the mayor of the island, to find out about the curse affecting the residents.[83] Originally ordered to do the impossible task of destroying the moon, they decide to explore the island the next morning.[84][85] While in the forest, they meet a gigantic mouse, which they quickly defeat, and find a ruined temple.[86] Natsu then stamps on the floor of the temple which causes it to crumble apart and sends them plummeting down into a large cavern.[87] The cavern holds the frozen demon Deliora, and the Mages Yuka Suzuki, Sherry, and Toby. Gray tells them that they are going to stay put until the moon comes back out and Natsu instinctively falls asleep at this piece of news.[88][89] Night soon arrives and the team discovers that the purple moonlight is hitting Deliora. Natsu and the others run up the surface to investigate and they discover a ritual to free Deliora.[88]
Enraged by Lyon Vastia's command to destroy the village, Natsu jumps out from hiding and attacks, but is quickly stopped by Lyon's Ice Magic and pushed down a hill by Gray.[90] Natsu returns back up the hill only to find Gray beaten up and carries him back to the village.[91] As he arrives, he falls into the trap that Lucy had previously placed for Lyon and his mages.[92] The village is then attacked by Lyon’s mages who uses poison jelly to kill everyone. Using his Fire Dragon’s Brilliant Flame attack, Natsu destroys a large amount of poison and sends the residents to the outskirts of the village. [93] Natsu and Lucy are then confronted by Sherri, Yuka and Toby.[94] After Sherri and Angelica leave to destroy the villagers, Lucy accidentally grabs onto Angelica and leaves Natsu to fight Yuka and Toby.[95] When Happy decides to go check on Lucy to make sure she’s okay, Natsu comments that it’s fine and that he would take care of these two. After a brief battle, he defeats Yuka and tricks Toby into poisoning himself.[96][97]
Erza arrives the next day and Natsu reappears alone, going back into the temple from earlier.[98] After he goes into the ruins, he begins breaking them to trying to tilt the temple so that the moonlight wouldn't reach Deliora.[99] He then starts to fight Lyon, but midway through is interrupted by Gray, who tells him that he'll fight Lyon instead.[100][101] Gray attempts to use the powerful spell Iced Shell to kill both himself and Lyon, but is stopped when Natsu punches him in the face..[102] Enraged at being ignored by Zalty, he chases after him and falls into another fight.[103]
Their battle leads into Deliora's cavern, where Natsu is shocked to find that Deliora's frozen prison is melting.[104] Natsu eventually finds a way around Zalty's Arc of Time Magic and punches him away just as the ritual for Deliora's revival is complete.[105] However, it is then revealed that Deliora had actually been long dead.[106] Thanks to Erza, they realize that the villager’s transformation has nothing to do with the ritual as they were demons in the first place. It is due to the excess Moon Drip Magic, created a barrier around the island making the moon look purple and making the residents forget about their appearance.[107]
Phantom Lord arc
Upon their return from the S-Class mission, Natsu and the group find the guild destroyed. They learn from Mirajane Strauss that it was their rival, Phantom Lord, who caused the destruction. Natsu argues with their master that they should fight back, but Makarov decides that there is no point in getting angry with someone who attacks an empty guild.[108] Later on, they discover the heavily injured bodies of Shadow Gear’s Levy, Jet and Droy nailed to a tree and Makarov declares war on Phantom.[109]
Fairy Tail rushes to Phantom Lord's guild and directly attack its members. When they arrive, Natsu breaks down the door and the battle between the two guilds begin.[110][111] When Makarov leaves to crush Phantom Lord's leader, Jose Porla, Gajeel Redfox joins the fight. He initially fights with Elfman before Natsu takes over, and the two dragon slayers have a fairly equal fight.[112] However, the fight soon turns sour when Makarov falls from above after losing his Magical power.[113]
After witnessing the Master’s apparent defeat, Erza orders them to retreat, much to the dismay of Natsu and the rest of the guild. Just as they are about to leave, Natsu overhears Gajeel and a member of the Element 4, Aria, saying they had captured Lucy. He kidnaps one of Phantom Lord's members, burning him until he told Natsu where Lucy may be. Out of fear of further injury, the member of Phantom Lord tells him that she was most likely at their headquarters.[114] Natsu sprints to it, shouting Lucy's name, leaping in the air, and catching her as she deliberately fell from the headquarters' tower prison. Seeing as they were at the headquarters, Natsu wishes to continue the fight, but Happy and a tearful Lucy make him reluctantly agree to retreat.[115]
Back at the guild, Natsu consoles a depressed Lucy, telling her that Fairy Tail is her "home".[116] The guild begins to quake and they go outside to see a gigantic walking building: Phantom Lord's headquarters, which unveils its powerful cannon, Jupiter.[117] Jose then orders the cannon to be fired, but Erza requips her Aamantine armor and resolves to stop it, despite Natsu and the rest of the guild begging her not to. The cannon is then shot towards the guild, but Erza takes the full brunt of Jupiter, and prevents it from annihilating the guild.[118] Jose warns them that another such blast will be fired unless Lucy is given to them, but every single one of them adamantly refuses. As a result, Jose tells them to shiver in 15 minutes of fear as it reloads.[119]
Natsu declares that he'll smash it before this happens. Happy flies them to the building, but just as he is about to destroy the lacrima of the cannon, he is confronted by a member of the Element 4, Totomaru.[120] Because Totomaru's element relates to fire, he is able to control any type of flame, and causes grief for Natsu before he figures out how to overcome Totomaru's control and destroy the lacrima the moment before the cannon fires.[121] Enraged, Jose orders for the walking building to transform into a gigantic Mage; the transformation process caused it to temporarily turn into a vehicle, invoking Natsu's motion sickness, and Totomaru almost strikes him with his Rainbow Fire before the arrival of Gray and Elfman, who finish the Phantom member off.[122] Happy rushes outside to see what has happened and informs them that the building has become a Mage and is about to unleash a massively destructive spell. They then agree to split up to find the source of the Magic.[123]
As Natsu is searching, he meets the strongest of the Element 4, Aria.[124] Natsu is dominated during the fight and nearly loses his Magic via Aria's "Void". He is saved by Erza, who took over the match and defeats Aria in one blow.[125] Erza collapses from exhaustion moments before Jose announces that they have captured Lucy. Erza shouts for Natsu to unleash his hidden power and protect them all. Natsu, inspired by this, discovers newfound determination and flames forward until he smashes through a wall and saves Lucy being impaled from one of Gajeel's daggers.[126][127]
The two Dragon Slayers then begin their lengthy fight.[128] Although equal at first, Gajeel takes the upper hand when he eats the metal tiles and restores his health.[129] This abruptly changes when Natsu gets to eat fire thanks to Lucy's Celestial Spirit, Sagittarius, and he simultaneously defeats Gajeel with his Crimson Lotus: Fire Dragon Fist, and destroys his guild.[130] Natsu falls due to fatigue but stays behind in the guild as Happy takes Lucy back to Fairy Tail.[131] Natsu asked Gajeel about where he learned his Magic where Gajeel replies that he got it from the metal dragon Metalicana who disappeared on the date 7/7 X777, similar to Igneel.[132]
Whilst reconstructing the broken guild, Natsu carries a great deal many more wooden beams than necessary, and indirectly challenges Gray to carry as twice as many, who accepts and does so for a short second. Erza hits the both of them and forces them to stop messing around before Loke gives Gray Lucy's keys, which she had lost when she was caught by Juvia Lockser.[133] Natsu, Gray and Erza decide to go to her house for a short break, but find that she has left to go home. They rush to her house and are relieved to discover that she was only going to see her mother's grave.[134][135] When they return, Natsu and Gray overhear Lucy’s conversation about the punishment she received from Aquarius from losing the keys, and ponders what expression Lucy would have if she made her butt hurt. He never follows through with this, as he is struck by a chair thrown by an enraged Erza.[136] Her fury is directed at Laxus, who derides the weakness of Shadow Gear. Natsu throws a fist at Laxus who effortlessly dodges and then leaves with the affirmation that he will make the strongest guild. Erza tells Natsu to leave him, and then proposes that she, Natsu, Gray, Lucy and Happy should do a job together: attack an illegal Magic school. While doing the job, they destroy half a stretch of road.[137]
Loke arc
Natsu is first seen incorrectly playing pool with Gray. [138]After Lucy takes on a "Special Mission"from Mirajane, Natsu and the others travel to their destination. Natsu is again seen lying on the ground, suffering from his motion sickness.[139] The mission is to help a theater house by becoming actors for a play. However, Natsu and the other's destructiveness causes the play to become apparently ruined. But, much to everyone's surprise, the play becomes a big hit.[140]
After defeating some troublemakers at Balsam Village, Natsu and the others decides to stay in town for the night. As they are talking, they notice Loke in the distance and comes over to speak to him until he quickly runs away upon the sight of Lucy.[141] During their stay, Natsu, Gray and Erza get into a serious pillow fight. Gray apparently wins and Natsu calls on Lucy to decide for them since he wouldn't accept his loss.[142][143] He later on searches for Loke who suddenly disappeared.[144]
Tower of Heaven arc
Upon discovering that Loke is a Celestial Spirit, Natsu expresses his desire to be able to summon a dragon, claiming he wants a way to test the extent of his Dragon Slayer Magic. When Loke gives Lucy the tickets to a resort, where he had previously reserved rooms for himself and his girlfriends, Natsu joins her, Erza, and Gray in a break from the jobs assigned at Fairy Tail.[145] After spending a day of relaxation at the resort with the other members of the group, Natsu tries his luck at roulette in the casino, but is attacked by Wally Buchanen in the middle of the game, who tries to kill Natsu by firing his gun into his mouth.[146]
After the abduction of both Erza and Happy, Natsu, incensed by Wally's attempt to kill him, assists the others, with the newly arrived Juvia Lockser, in tracking Erza by using his sharp sense of smell to follow her scent across the sea to the Tower of Heaven.[147][148] Upon their arrival, the team uses Juvia's oxygen bubbles to sneak into the tower's basement through an underwater tunnel, and Natsu's desire for an open fight is fulfilled when they are challenged by the guards there.[149] After meeting up with Erza, Natsu rushes off on his own to find Happy, and gets his revenge on Wally.[150]
After finally arriving at Millianna's room, he tries on a cat-themed costume head, but finds that it is stuck.[151] When Wally tries to ambush him again, he is saved by Millianna, who believes that Natsu is a real cat and doesn't want Wally to hurt him.[152][153] He is nearly killed again when Wally convinces Millianna that he is not, in fact, a cat, and the two attack in tandem but he is saved by Happy's return. He ends up defeating both Mages by using a joke-move, the "Ultimate Strike: Kitty in Pain", to invoke Millianna's pity and make her release him from his bonds, allowing his Magic to return and beating them with a single attack using his Fire Dragon's Wing Attack.[154]
After Happy finally removes the cat mask off of Natsu, Wally attempts to continue their fight, but Natsu states that it is already over. Suddenly, dozens of mouths grow all over the walls, and Jellal tells everyone that they are part of the Paradise Game and explains the rules to them.[155][156] Following Jellal Fernandes's beginning of the Paradise Game, Natsu tries to cheat by using Happy's Magic to fly to the top floor directly, but is intercepted by Fukuro.[157] Simon tries to fight Fukuro in Natsu’s stead, but is easily defeated.[158] Natsu and Fukuro then begin their battle, but [159] Fukuro takes advantage of Natsu’s motion sickness to incapacitate and then swallow him, thus absorbing his Dragon Slayer abilities.[160] But the final stages of absorption are stopped by Gray, who, in a rage due to Erza's condition, battles and then defeats Fukuro with his Seven Slice Dance, freeing Natsu from his stomach.[161]
After the fight with Fukuro, Natsu wakes up on Simon’s back. Simon takes Natsu and begs him to save Erza. Natsu refuses at first, saying that Erza needed to defeat her own opponent and that was something he didn't want to interfere, but he changes his mind once Simon tells him that she can't defeat Jellal.[162][163] He also states that she is still trying to save Jellal and that Jellal will take advantage of her emotions. Simon displays his concern that Erza might take advantage of the Etherion to die and take Jellal down with her, which makes Natsu reach his boiling point, and ask Simon about Erza's whereabouts.[164] After the Etherion was fired, Natsu manages to arrive just in time to save Erza from being absorbed into the R-System lacrima and tells her that they need to finish their job, otherwise they won't make it to Lucy's rent on time. She tells him that she can't move, to which he comically tickles her. Erza then tells Natsu to leave and not to fight Jellal because he will only lose, and she tearfully begs him to listen to her. However, Natsu picks Erza up, asking her why she is like that and telling her that he'll win this fight, subsequently knocking her out. He turns back to Jellal, accusing that he was the reason behind Erza crying and he says she should be strong, mean, and scary, . Natsu says he hopes Erza will be the Erza he knew once she wakes up and that he'll fight Jellal for that and charges him.[165]
Natsu fights Jellal and seems to dominate over him, before Jellal reveals that he wants to know the Dragon Slayer abilities. Natsu has trouble predicting a now serious Jellal's movement and is seemingly overpowered by Jellal's Grand Chariot attack. When Jellal talks about that the damage that he had dealt to the tower, Natsu takes advantage of his words and begins destroying some of the lacrima, saying that Fairy Tail mages specialize in property damage and that he's still able to fight.[166] He tries to fight Jellal once more and destroys more of the lacrima; this prompts Jellal to prepare an attack that will finish off Natsu, but Erza wakes up and steps in, hoping that he wouldn't attack her. Jellal tells them that it doesn't matter anymore and launches his attack on them. Much to their shock, Simon steps in and sacrifices himself to protect them. While Jellal is mocking Simon, Natsu starts eating the lacrima, and he tells Jellal to shut up and punches him when Jellal says they will not escape. He eats more of the Etherion-infused lacrima and starts to go wild.[167] Natsu experiences negative side effects from eating the lacrima, apparently being unable to handle the magic power of Etherion. He suddenly stabilizes and enters Dragon Force and is able to dominate Jellal. Jellal is able to get away and fly above the tower and attempts to use Abyss Break to defeat Natsu; however, a wound caused by Erza interrupts his attempt at casting the powerful spell. Natsu says there's no freedom for someone possessed by a ghost and takes advantage of this opening to attack and defeat Jellal.[168]
Natsu faints after the battle and Erza carries him, but she realizes that the Etherion has gone out of control and will soon create a giant explosion that will kill everyone around them. Erza decides to sacrifice herself and fuse with Etherion to save everybody but Natsu suddenly wakes up as she starts the fusion and asks Erza what she is doing. She replies that this is the only way to save everybody and she can't imagine the world without Fairy Tail or her friends. If she can save everyone, then she will do it without any hesitation. Erza finishes the fusion and says she'll always be with them as a crying Natsu begs her to get out of there; the tower then disappears.[169] After this, Erza sees a vision of her funeral. In the vision everyone is very sad that she is dead except for Natsu who loudly denies that Erza is dead and is attacked by some attendees of the funeral and shoved to the ground. Seeing this, Erza realizes that her decision left her friends with a sad future and wants it to stop. She suddenly wakes up and realizes that she is alive and sees everyone running towards her. She notices that Natsu is carrying her, and he lets her down while stating that they are the same. Natsu, in tears, tells her not to do something like that ever again. Erza promises Natsu not to risk her life again and gives him a genuine thanks, realizing that she needs to live for her friends' sake to bring a happy future.[170]
Natsu sleeps for three days straight and temporarily wakes up after Gray insulted him who also reminds him of how he got eaten by Fukuro, after that he suddenly falls asleep again. He feasts later that night after finally waking up from his Etherion injuries.[171] As Erza starts her send off for Wally, Millianna and Shô, Natsu appears and says he hopes to see them again sometime soon and sets off fireworks, using his magic, along with Gray and Lucy as a farewell.[172]
Fighting Festival arc
Natsu returns from the tower to find the guild rebuilt and two new members, Juvia and Gajeel. Provoked by Gajeel, he starts a huge fight with him which quickly includes the other members. It also appears that he doesn't particularly like the new look of the guild as well, saying that it is not the same as it used to be.[173] After a while, he starts to suffer from some side-effects from absorbing the Etherion during his fight with Jellal. He initially leaves for home, but sleeps in Lucy's bed instead. Later, he returns temporarily to hunt a Sorcerer Magazine guy that he believes is destroying his reputation.
During the Festival, Natsu is still dozy as Evergreen froze the participants of the Miss Fairy Tail contest.[174] Laxus, along with his bodyguards the Thunder God Tribe, announces his "Fairy Tail battle", threatening to kill the girls unless everyone joined in, effectively making them hostages.[175]
Natsu is suddenly rejuvenated by the prospect of a battle royale between guild members, and is back on his destructive feet. He leaps forward to attack Laxus, but a quick electric shock from Laxus deals with Natsu. Swiftly getting back on his feet, he sprints to join the fight but is unable to leave the guild due to Freed Justine's runes, [176] which affected Gajeel the same way. It is believed that, due to their Dragon Slayer Magic, they are unable to get out of the guild . He then tries to free Erza with Gajeel by heating her up. Inadvertently, they succeeded, but not without Erza punching them both for their carelessness [177] and then running out to fight . Her reappearance in the battle came in tandem with the arrival of Mystogan.
Despite Makarov's worries, Natsu still has faith that Laxus isnt going to harm anyone. However, Laxus himself cast serious doubt on this when he threatens to destroy the entire town by activating his Hall of Thunder, in response to losing his hostages after Evergreen's defeat at the hands of Erza. Levy, now released from the stone enchantment as well, offers that she can break the barrier,[178] allowing Natsu and Gajeel to enter the battlefield, and eventually manages to do so.
Natsu eventually finds Laxus and confronts him at Kardia Cathedral and is just in time to catch a glimpse of Mystogan's face, which looks exactly like Jellal. Erza asks Mystogan if he is Jellal, but Mystogan denies this and says he only knows who he is, and then disappears. Natsu then challenges Laxus[179], and while initially indifferent to him, Laxus starts to take him seriously after Natsu manages to score a few hits.[180] As Erza leaves to deal with Laxus' Hall of Thunder, Natsu chides Laxus for not really wanting to carry out his plan, saying that he just wants his grandfather to give in, whom neither realize has fallen deathly ill. He has faith that Erza will stop the spell, despite Laxus' thoughts otherwise.[181] Natsu's faith is proven as they see a report that the Hall of Thunder has been stopped due to Erza and the recovered Fairy Tail members. Though the town is spared from the Hall of Thunder, the inhabitants are now threatened by an enraged Laxus as he goes berserk.[182]
Natsu holds his own for a few moments, but is soon overpowered. Just then, Gajeel then joins in, saving Natsu from a finishing strike and both reluctantly team up to fight Laxus.[183] After a few assorted combos of Metal and Fire Dragon Slayer techniques, the smoke clears, and the still-unharmed Laxus remains unimpressed and offers to show them both "true Dragon Slayer Magic". Laxus releases a lightning version of the Dragon's Roar, inflicting critical damage and paralyses both Natsu and Gajeel. Laxus attempts to use the extremely powerful Fairy Law to kill everyone[184], both from the guild, as well as the whole of Magnolia, but the attack fails.[185]
Freed, still injured from his fight with Mirajane, appears and explains it is because Laxus' heart doesn't see the Fairy Tail members nor the people of Magnolia as enemies. Laxus vows to change the guild but then Natsu gets up, ready to stop him and prove that his comrades are precious to him.[186] Natsu is then beaten into the ground by Laxus, but keeps getting back up. Laxus is about to kill Natsu with another Lightning Dragon move, but Gajeel absorbs it by using himself as a lighting rod. Finally, Natsu comes back with a flurry of Fire Dragon moves in an eight-hit combo, defeating Laxus. Victorious, Natsu stands tall and yells at the top of his lungs.[187]
After the fight, most of the members recover from the brutal beatings they had taken, Natsu included, whose mouth is bandaged shut, muffling his speech. When Laxus shows up at the guild to see Makarov, Natsu yells at him, his muffles translated by Gajeel, that he didn't consider the two-on-one as a fair victory and that he wants a rematch with Laxus. However, instead of the usual comeback, Laxus merely waves after the guild without facing them, earning him a confused glance from Natsu.[188] Despite his injuries, Natsu takes part in the Fantasia parade in a fire-blowing float. Natsu and the rest of the guild hold up the sign Laxus and Makarov made up as Laxus leaves the guild, having been excommunicated.[189]
Oración Seis arc
The following week after the Harvest Festival, Natsu's wounds heal and he confronts Makarov regarding Laxus' excommunication, but is stopped by Erza.[190] When Lucy worries about her lack of money, Natsu suggest that they take a job.[191] The next day, they, along with Happy, Erza, and Gray prepare to leave to find and capture the escaped convict Velveno. Lucy suddenly darts off - confused and the others follow.[192] They find that she is okay and almost literally defeated a whole guild by herself.[193]
As Lucy is short on her rent, Natsu and the others help her by taking jobs as waiters and waitresses in a Magical restaurant. However, Natsu spends most of his time eating the food rather than serving it to the customers, and after all the work is done, supports a rather bloated figure.[194] They return to the guild to find a drawing of the various factions of the Dark Guilds and the current strength of the Balam Alliance. Makarov then informs the guild there will be an alliance between several Legal Guilds to take down one of the main members of the Balam Alliance, the Oración Seis.[195] Team Natsu is the team selected to represent Fairy Tail.
As he ventures to the meeting point, he meets The Trimens and Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki, who are Blue Pegasus's delegates. He, along with Gray, is not impressed with them. Soon after, they meet the Lamia Scale Guild members to join them and he becomes even more unimpressed in the form of two old foes, Lyon and Sherry, and one of the Ten Wizard Saints, Jura Neekis. However, as he meets the Cait Shelter Guild member, Wendy Marvell, along with her cat Carla, he gives an impression of recognizing Wendy's name.[196] Later, he runs out looking for the Oración Seis to take them all on, one on one.[197]
After the Oración Seis finds them, Natsu is beaten[198] and nearly killed until Jura Neekis arrives to save him and the others.[199] As they discover Erza's poisoned state, Carla suggests that they find the captured Happy, along with Wendy, who is revealed to be the Dragon Slayer of the Sky, so she can save her.[200] With this, Natsu runs off with Carla and Gray, asking Carla along the way what element Wendy consumes using her Dragon Slayer powers, which happens to be air. Natsu wonders if it is tasty to which Carla replies she doesn't know, though Gray conjectures that it is the same as inhaling. They continue their search, only to find[201] and beat the Naked Mummy Guild.[202] After discovering Oración Seis's hideout, Natsu goes on ahead while Gray fights Racer.[203] As he arrives, Natsu is met with a shock - Jellal is revived. Natsu is able to escape with Wendy and Happy though, and after Gray defends them from Racer,[204],and Hibiki guides Natsu,[205] he reaches Erza again. Wendy finally heals Erza as everyone discusses the revival of Jellal. [206]Suddenly, Nirvana is revealed though, and Natsu rushes headstrong to stop Jellal.[207]
On his way, he runs into Racer's personal guild, Harpuia, and defeats them easily.[208] Natsu then finds an unconscious Gray floating in a river and tries to help him, but when he gets there, a raft pops up out of the water and Natsu's motion sickness takes over. Gray gets up, acting strangely, and prepares to make a killing blow. Lucy and Hibiki appear, halting Gray as the raft comes to a stop; despite this, Natsu still feels the effects. It is revealed that Gray is actually Angel's Celestial Spirit, Gemini.[209] Lucy faces off against her and wins, but rapids suddenly appear and drag her and Natsu down the river and to a waterfall.[210] He later wakes up on dry land along with Lucy, and notices that Virgo has been taking care of them by treating Lucy's wounds and changing their clothes by her own will. Sherry, who has murderous thoughts due to Nirvana, appears suddenly and is about to attack Natsu and Lucy when Gray crashes in and holds her down, and Lyon shows up to be alive as well, making Sherry revert to normal.[211] Natsu, along with Gray and Lucy, are caught up in the activation of Nirvana's second stage;[212] they are later seen climbing up one of its legs.[213]
As Natsu's motion sickness kicks in, Happy arrives to help him, so as he flies to stop Brain, Cobra takes to the skies as well to battle Natsu.[214] As the two begin to battle, Cobra stays ahead of Natsu by reading his thoughts,[215] but Natsu overcomes this by fighting on instinct. Natsu becomes shocked as he realizes that Cobra is the Poison Dragon Slayer.[216]
However, he learns that Cobra is actually artificial like Laxus, so Natsu fights to defeat yet another artificial Dragon Slayer. After being infected with some of the poison, Natsu becomes enraged that Cobra considers all dragons extinct and tries to defeat Cobra again with a huge roar that shatters Cobra's sensitive ear drums.[217] However, Cobra survives only to be defeated by Brain.[218] With this, Brain reveals that he plans on using Nirvana to turn Natsu evil so he can serve him, but the timely arrival of Gray, Lucy and Jura save him.[219] After Jura deals with Brain, Wendy and Carla arrive[220] and Wendy heals Natsu's poison while temporarily curing him of motion sickness.[221]
As the team is led into a trap by Brain,[222] Natsu becomes enraged to see Jura nearly killed from defending them from it.[223] When the seventh member of the Oración Seis, Brain's staff Klodoa, appears to him, Gray, Lucy and Happy, Natsu are unfazed by the fact that he is a talking stick and waves him around, demanding that he stop Nirvana.[224]
Klodoa, however, frees himself from Natsu's grasp and tells him of their plan to destroy Cait Shelter so Nirvana cannot be resealed. Klodoa then starts whacking, but then abruptly acts nervously (due to Midnight's defeat at Erza) as he tells that since all the Oración Seis members have been defeated, a new side of Brain will emerge, codenamed Zero. This new personality then appears himself; Natsu comments that Zero's Magic feels disgusting, and attacks him when Zero easily smashes through Gray's Ice Shield. Zero dodges Natsu's attack and delivers a powerful one of his own, knocking Natsu down.[225] After some encouraging words, Natsu wills himself back up[226] and goes to Lacrima #1.[227]
However, Zero awaits him and the two battle fiercely. Jellal eventually appears and delivers a powerful Magic blast to Natsu, shocking both him and Zero, the latter asking if Jellal had regained his memories. In fact, Jellal's memories had not returned, but he does remember Natsu's name and calls him the ray of hope. The Magic blast was actually a powerful fire attack intended to give Natsu back his strength.[228]
Initially, Natsu refuses Jellal's help and even proceeds to attack him. Taking advantage of the situation, Zero fires another spell at Natsu. Jellal defends him by taking the full force of the blast.[229] This prompts Natsu to accept the Flame of Rebuke from Jellal to defeat Zero, and he receives a large boost in strength and speed.[230] In his Dragon Force mode, he manages to beat Zero (after some initial trouble controlling his power) and destroys the Lacrima Crystal, stopping Nirvana when the other five Mages also destroy their crystals.[231][232]
At last, they manage to stop the Nirvana and the Oración Seis once and for all, but the celebration doesn't last long as the newly reformed Council shows up to take away Hoteye and Jellal into custody. While Natsu and Wendy protest against this, Jellal, Erza and everyone else only look on sadly.[233]
Natsu tries to take Jellal back by force and attacks the council guards, but is stopped by Erza.[234] He later appears at Cait Shelter and gets a new outfit to replace his torn up one and learns about Cait Shelter's disturbing secret, which leads to Wendy being asked to join Fairy Tail. [235] Natsu shows joy about being on a boat thanks to Wendy, but quickly gets sick again when her Magic wears off. He returns to Fairy Tail and tries to tell Elfman about his battle against Cobra.[236]
Daphne arc
Note: Events in this arc occur only in the anime and do not constitute canon material.
While in the guild, Gray approaches Natsu and tells him about a rumor in another town that somebody named Daphne has seen a dragon. Because of this, Natsu, together with Happy, Wendy, and Charle decides to check it out. After arriving at the inn, everyone notices that there are no customers in the inn Gray pointed to them. The four begins to search all the rooms to look for anyone until they stumble upon a door made of stuffed animals. Daphne soon appears, giving them a very enthusiastic greeting, as she tries to sell them her diet product, Metamo. After Daphne finishes speaking, he informs her about their situation to find their parents. Daphne tells Natsu she never saw a dragon, and that it was a lie to help sales. Angered, Natsu tries to leave, but finds himself trapped in the room by Daphne's Concealment Magic.[237]
Gray soon arrives and reveals himself to be working with Daphne. He then challenges Natsu to a final battle between the two, with Daphne telling Gray to crush the Dragon Slayer, as she needs him.[237] Natsu immediately realizes he is fighting the real Gray, after he gets him by one of his punches. They fight evenly, until Natsu seemingly defeats Gray, but Gray is able to freeze Natsu's feet to the ground, allowing Daphne to use Hidden Darkness.[238]
As Natsu is trapped in the spell, he remembers everything about the City Without Sound. Too late to say anything else though, his Magical Energy starts being taken by one of Daphne's inventions, the Dragonoid.[238]
As Natsu floats in the Dragonoid, he is finally able to remember the promise he made to the people of The City Without Sound, and how he would defeat "the one who controls dragons" to undo their Hidden spell. Natsu blames himself for fogetting, but realizes they were talking about Daphne. He releases a bunch of Magical Power, trying to override the machine. Eventually, the Dragonoid arrives in Magnolia. Natsu hears the voice of his guildmates, and tells them to destroy the Dragonoid, even if it means him as well.[239]
Still trapped inside, Natsu listens to Daphne's story about how nobody believed she saw a dragon, thus explaining why she created her own. Natsu argues that dragons do exist, but Daphne, now says otherwise. Natsu continues fighting against the Dragonoid. Eventually he is somewhat able to gain control of it. His friends tell him to keep fighting on inside. Natsu does, and gives off as much firepower as possible. Thanks to Gajeel, the Dragonoid is destroyed soon after. Natsu then eats a fire arrow made by various spells of his guild mates, and quickly defeats Daphne, finally living up to his promise. He celebrates with the guild afterwards.[240]
Edolas arc
After finding out that Gildarts Clive is on his way back, Natsu and the rest of Fairy Tail begins to prepare for his arrival. Even the whole town gets ready, dividing in two in order to avoid Gildarts accidentally smashing through private houses.[241] Upon Gildarts' arrival, Natsu immediately challenges him to a fight and charges at him, only to get deflected into the ceiling, where he comments on how strong Gildarts is.[242] Gildarts invites him to visit him a bit later at his house.[243] When Natsu and Happy arrive, Gildarts jokes about Natsu's relationship with Lisanna, but is shaken when Natsu tells him that she died two years ago while he was on his mission. Natsu tries to leave, but Gildarts mentions that he ran into a dragon while on his mission. He says it wasn't Igneel because it was a black dragon, not a red one. He recounts that he fought it and that it was the reason he failed the quest. Natsu decides he will go to the sacred mountain, Zonia, where Gildarts encountered the dragon, in the hopes of learning where Igneel is. Gildarts stops him and shows him the wounds he received from the dragon: the loss of his left arm, leg and an organ. Natsu runs out afterwards, saying a Dragon Slayer could defeat the dragon, tripping and falling into a pond before reminiscing about Igneel.[244]
While asleep, the Anima absorbs the guild. Only he, Wendy, Happy, and Carla are left behind because of their Dragon Slayer powers. Here, Carla explains about "Edolas", a parallel world.[245] Natsu then plans to go to Edolas to save the guild[246]. As he goes to the Edolas version of Fairy Tail, he becomes amazed as he sees how everyone is so different. He then gapes at how scary the Edolas version of Lucy is from her counterpart.[247]
Edolas Lucy quickly realizes who Natsu is, likely confusing him with the Edolas Natsu, and hugs him, asking where he's been before punishing him. Later on, Edolas Lisanna shows up and Natsu quickly sheds tears of joy. Just as he is about to hug her, Edolas Lucy kicked him in the face, and he soon hears Carla saying that everyone here is not from their guild and that they are their Edolas counterparts.[248] Just as he is about to search for his friends, news of the Fairy Hunter arrive, and the guild has to transfer away. He later learns that the Fairy Hunter is none other than Edolas Erza, and to get his friends back, he probably will have to fight her.[249]
Upon escaping the Fairy Hunters, Natsu reveals that they came from Earth Land to save their guild, which surprises the Edolas Fairy Tail members. When he requests to know how to get to the Capital, just about everyone tells him to give up on that idea, as it is practically suicidal. However, even after hearing the history of Edolas on guilds and their master, Natsu isn't faltered and firmly says that he will save his guild and his companions. This shocks everyone in the guild, especially Lucy. Upon receiving the directions to the Capital, Natsu gets sidetracked and wants to capture a small, frog-like creature and give it to Earth Land's Lucy as a gift, to which Happy says it's a bad idea.[250] The capture, however, is unsuccessful, as an extremely large frog-like creature appeared, and they are forced to run away when they realize that they can't use Magic. Out of nowhere, Edolas Lucy saves them, and tells them that she came with them because the area was dangerous, and not because she was worried. Upon hearing that, Natsu says that she's Lucy after all, to which Lucy responds by saying that was a twisted way of logic he was thinking.[251]
Later, the group makes their way into the Town Of Luen, where Natsu purchases a Magic sword hilt from a secret Magic black market. When the Edolas Royal Army discovers them, he immediately puts his weapon to use, sending streams of fire at the soldiers. However, they use a Magic shield against his attack, and Natsu finds that he is unable to use any more Magic due to it being limited in Edolas. He then manages to escape for a short while with the rest, and is shocked to find out that Earth Land Lucy has managed to find her way into Edolas with the help of Mystogan.[252]
Eventually, Natsu and the group made it to Sikka, where they decide to spend the night. While eating, he watches the two Lucys arguing about their bodies, to which Natsu retaliated with a question of why they were taking a bath with their counterpart. The next day, while listening to Edolas Lucy explain that a race called Exceed existed, they see an airship that belonged to the Royal Army. Natsu wants to ride on to get there, but when Wendy states she can't perform Troia here, he says that that was a bad idea after all. Watching Lucy fail to summon the correct Celestial Spirit due to one of Loke's dates, Natsu and Wendy decide to battle with their weapons fully recharged.[253] They are defeated in matter of moments, however. When the airship flys off and they almost get captured, all hope seemed lost until Edolas Natsu emerges with his vehicle and escapes with the group. Experiencing motion sickness, he listened to his counterpart introduce himself as Natsu the Fireball.[254]
Arriving at the outskirt of the capital of Edolas, Edolas Natsu threw everyone out. He explains that he doesn't want to fight the capital as it's extremely foolish, and says that the only reason why he even did them a favor is because Edolas Lucy requested him to help. Before Edolas Natsu has the chance to leave, Earth Land Natsu pulls him off his vehicle and asks why he won't get motion sickness. His counterpart's cowardly response off his vehicle surprises everyone else. Earth Land Natsu then comments on how Lucy should treat his counterpart better, even though she was only trying to introduce herself to his counterpart. Although Edolas Natsu says that they won't win against the Royal Army, Earth Land Natsu only gives a smile of confidence, saying that they will rescue their friends and companions from the enemy. Later, inside the kingdom, they find the Lacrima, which is guarded by the Royal Army.[255]
While listening to the king's speech, they notice that parts of the Lacrima have been removed, and when the King chipped off a bit of the Lacrima, Natsu nearly loses it, had Lucy not held him back.[256] Later, when Carla devises a plan to sneak into the palace, they take a path into an abandoned mine and once they make it out, they are captured by Edolas Erza. Natsu looks on, shocked at Happy, as the soldiers bow down to Happy and Carla.[257] Natsu and Wendy are locked up in a jail cell; Natsu asks the guard what happened to Lucy. After hearing the guard say that they will execute her, he becomes furious and threatens to kill them if they touch Lucy. The guards later reveal that the Exceeds' mission was originally to assassinate the Dragon Slayers, but had been changed to capture them instead.[258] Natsu is next seen unconscious as Byro prepares to extract his and Wendy's Dragon Slayer Magic. When Gray and Erza save Lucy, Happy, and Carla from Erza Knightwalker, Gray gives an unconscious Natsu an Ex-ball, a food that allows Earth Land wizards to use their unlimited Magic in Edolas. Upon waking up, Natsu sees his power restored, breathes out fire, and rushes to stop the Fairy Tail Lacrima from colliding with Extalia.[259]
He eventually runs into Wendy, Carla, Lucy, and Gray. At first, Natsu is confused about the situation until Lucy and Wendy explain that Earth Land Gajeel, Gray and Erza showed up. Now cleared up, the group splits into two; Natsu travels with Lucy and Gray,[260] and asks where the king is. Gray and Lucy suspect in some important place, but Lucy starts to wonder, since the courtyard and prison were in such strange locations for a castle. Natsu then says that in short, the place has a strange layout. Lucy responds, saying that she wouldn't be surprised if there was an amusement park, and coincidentally there was one right in front of them. Sugarboy and Hughes show up, stating how much they want unlimited Magic, and prepare to fight Natsu and the others. Hughes starts off by dropping a ship on Natsu, Gray, and Lucy, which is blocked by Gray's Ice Shield.[261]
Natsu then attacks Hughes, demanding that his comrades be returned. Hughes denies Natsu and uses his weapon, Command Tact, to get Natsu onto a roller coaster which debilitates him. Gray throws Lucy onto the coaster to help Natsu, but the coaster track ends in a small lake. Hughes talks of how awesome Edolas Magic is, and why it couldn't be allowed to run out, which infuriates Natsu, as they are killing Fairy Tail and the Exceeds just for unlimited Magic.[262] He says the important thing is that they are living things, that "These are lives, dammit!" Lucy proceeds to use Aquarius to attack Hughes, but Hughes' control of anything in the park overrides Aquarius' control of the water, and he collapses a large amount of water on Natsu, Lucy, and Aquarius.[263]
The two are washed into the Monster Academy. Natsu finds Lucy inside a coffin that can change ones clothes, so he devises a plan to have Lucy distract Hughes with a sexy bikini, which ultimately fails. Hughes controls the monster dolls into attacking them, driving Lucy away from Natsu. As Natsu is getting beat up by the monsters, he becomes enraged and the form of a dragon could be seen in his smoke and fire, causing Hughes and his monster army to back away in fear. He is seen later punching Hughes through the Monster Academy sign, knocking out Byro at the same time.[264],[265]
Natsu later meets up with Lucy, and when Coco tries to give them a key to the king's plan, he is surprised, but is then caught off guard when Sugarboy glides past them and steals the key.[266] After going after and defeating Sugarboy, Gray catches up with Natsu. When he catches up, Natsu is a little surprised to see the key destroyed, but then learns that Gray can create a replica and that they can use it to turn everyone back to normal. Shortly after, Erza Knightwalker (actually Erza Scarlet in disguise) shows up and captures them. He is later seen seemingly unconscious and tied up, being taken by Erza past a gate to where the cannon is.[267] Erza tells Gray to create a duplicate of the key; they were secretly trying to hit the lacrima with the cannon, but when the plan failed (because of Gray not knowing how to use the cannon), Erza tells Natsu to move, knocking out some of the soldiers, taking the king as hostage, and ordering the soldiers to change the target of the cannon to the lacrima itself. Erza Knightwalker appears from above and attacks Erza, releasing the king and returning the cannon to its original target. When firing the cannon, Lucy arrives with Coco on a Region to take everyone to Extalia and stop the lacrima.[268]
When the strength of the Mages was not enough, the entire population of Extalia, including the queen to the surprise of many, come to help and suddenly the lacrima disappears, leaving some smoke and the Mage Mystogan there, who explains that thanks to them, he was able to find an Anima large enough to send the Lacrima back to Earth Land and return everyone to normal. He then reveals himself as the Prince of Edolas who Pantherlily saved many years back. Suddenly, Pantherlily is attacked by Erza Knightwalker, who was going to attack the Exceeds with a group of soldiers on Regions.[269] When Mystogan tries to stop Erza Knightwalker, the king appears inside an enormous dragon-like machine called Dorma Anim, which nullifies all external Magic attacks. The king orders the soldiers to capture the Exceeds and then shoots a Magic beam from the Dorma. Mystogan uses the Triple Magic Rune: Mirrored Water, to deflect the attack back to it, but it doesn't have any effect. Dorma Anim shoots again and takes Mystogan down. When the king is about to attack again, the Dorma Anim is suddenly beaten 3 times, revealing Natsu, Gajeel and Wendy, who had decided to take on the king, leaving the rest to deal with the soldiers.[270]
Wendy casts a spell on Natsu and Gajeel while they fight with the Dorma Anim, making them faster and stronger. The king then fires some tracking missiles after Wendy, but Natsu intercepts and destroys them. When the king is about to shoot again, Gajeel hits the missiles before launch but gets hit by the tail of the Dorma. A group of missiles is fired again, but these ones explode before Natsu can hit them. The king gets surprised when Natsu eats the fire of the explosions while Gajeel starts eating the tail of the Dorma. Suddenly, the Dorma changes color and gains in power, as the king states that he is going to "Drain all the fighting spirits".[271]
The new form of the Dorma Anim grants it a huge increase in power, turning the tide in the king's favor. Gajeel decides to try some different tactics, revealing that they hadn't been using full power because they didn't know what could happen. All three of them attacked at once with their respective roars, but it had almost no effect. The king proclaims victory, saying that although they have infinite Magic, it takes a while to recharge after it's all used up. Natsu gets up, saying he'll use tomorrow's Magic. Gajeel gets up and pins the Dorma Anim's leg down to the ground, telling Natsu to attack and that he was the only one who could do it. Natsu tells Wendy to aim a roar at him to boost his speed and succeeds in tearing through the Dorma Anim.[272]
Seeing the islands falling, a tip from Nadi about Mystogan, and Pantherlily's conversation make Natsu decide to dress up and declare himself as the Great Demon-Lord Dragneel. Showing up with his servants and a tied up Faust on the Royal Capital, he declares that he was the one responsible for taking Magic away from Edolas. He commands his servants to destroy the streets of Royal Capital. Mystogan shows up, saying that there's no reason to fight anymore with the king defeated, but Natsu doesn't listen and reveals Mystogan's lineage towards the masses.[273] The Great Demon-Lord then taunts Mystogan to either fight him or he will destroy the whole city. With Mystogan's arrival, Natsu taunts him by demonstrating his Magical power to the powerless prince and the crowd, in order to setup the perfect scenario. Though Mystogan continues to doubt the success of the plan, Natsu doesn't listen and starts a fist brawl against the prince. Knowing that Mystogan was still lacking confidence, he further taunts him to fight seriously, which causes him to receive a kick in the face. As the brawl continues, Natsu begins to tell Mystogan the three rules for leaving the guild as the final departing ritual.[274]
With the final rule finished, Natsu falls with a smile, while hoping to see him again one day. With their bodies beginning to glow because of Anima, he, along with Gajeel and Wendy, pretend to be suffering, to further convince the crowd that Prince Jellal has defeated them. As Natsu leaves, Faust tells Natsu he forgot about so many things when he became a king. He then asks if being in a guild is fun. Natsu looks puzzled at first, but then replies with a big smile telling him that they are.[275] When the crowd can no longer see them, they give a bright smile as a sign of good luck.[276]
Afterwards, Natsu and the others cross through the Anima and see that their guild and Magnolia are back to normal. They get another surprise when they see all the Exceeds in Earth Land as well. However, after learning the truth involving the 6 year mission, he bears no grudge against them and they part on good terms.[277] As they are about to head back to Fairy Tail, Pantherlily (in a smaller form) shows up, asking to join their guild. He pulls a suspicious person he caught out from behind a bush. Natsu then gets a major shock when he sees that it is the Edolas Lisanna, and wonders how and why she is in Earth Land. However, he is extremely happy when he figures out that she is, in fact, the Earth Land Lisanna. With this, he helps her back to her siblings for a tearful reunion.[278]
Tenrou Island arc
Natsu and the rest of Fairy Tail throws a party to celebrate Lisanna’s return which later on gets turned into a brawl that Natsu and Gajeel initially causes. [279] Days later, Natsu is seen rushing to the Request Board to get jobs for the upcoming S-Class Trial Promotion Trial. Natsu is then chosen by Makarov, along with Gray, Juvia, Elfman, Cana, Freed, Levy, and Mest Gryder.[280]
At the duration that the participants head to the island, Makarov begins to explain the rules for the first trial. After realizing that the boat has stopped, Natsu attempts to go to the island first. However, Freed has already cast his runes on board, preventing everyone to leave for five minutes. Only a few, namely Levy’s and Elfman’s team, are able to overwrite the runes leaving Natsu and the rest trapped. Once the runes disappeared, Natsu and Happy flies to the island. As they land on shore, Natsu is faced with eight paths marked ‘A’ to ‘H’. Natsu chooses the ‘E’ path as he believes that the letter ‘E’ means Erza and that she will be the one inside.[281] However, once the path clears, it was Gildarts that was waiting for him.[282] Natsu instantly charges to fight him. But despite his barrage of attacks, Gildarts easily overpowers Natsu using Hand to Hand Combat. Natsu then tries his Dragon's roar, but Gildarts uses his disassembling spell to counter, however it hits Natsu as well and he turns into numerous mini versions of himself.[283]
Natsu continues fighting whilst in his chibi form, which impresses Gildarts.[284] Later, Gildarts eventually loses his patience while fighting the mini-Natsus and turns him back to normal. Realizing that this is probably his best chance, Natsu uses his strongest attack: The Crimson Lotus Exploding Flame Blade. But the attack does nothing more than push Gildarts back a few feet.[285] Gildarts stops holding back on Natsu and releases his Magic Power that is felt over the entire island. Natsu then bows down to Gildarts in defeat. Gildarts explains that Natsu has finally learned to face his weaknesses and he lets him pass as Natsu begins to cry.[286]
As everyone finishes through their paths, Makarov finally announces the beginning of the second trial. All pumped up, Natsu officially challenges Gray, Cana, Levy and Elfman for the S-Class Title, which everyone immediately agrees. [287] With the second tribally starting, Natsu discusses with Happy the possible whereabouts of Mavis’ grave. They both decide to fly to check the top of the island, but along the way, he sees with Elfman and Evergreen confronting Zeref. Natsu manages to save them by making them duck just in time to avoid Zeref’s Death Magic. Zeref calls out to Natsu, but Natsu fails to recognize who he is and tells him to go away.[288] When Zeref states that he was anticipating Natsu’s arrival, Natsu interprets this as a declaration of challenge and attacks him, punching Zeref on the face. Zeref then feels another wave of Death Magic coming, and tells Natsu and the others to run. Natsu realizes that his magic takes away lives and tells the others to leave. As Elfman and Evergreen run, Natsu stays but emerges okay and realizes that the boy has disappeared. Happy notices that Natsu’s muffler has turned black and wonders if Igneel gave him the scarf so that he would be protected. [289]
When Natsu sees the warning signal sent up by Erza[290], he and Happy starts to think about who the enemy might be.[291] Natsu and Happy continue through the forest, until they hear a loud noise. Thinking that the enemy might be there, they head towards it. Natsu then sees a column of fire from one of Asuma’s attacks and runs, knowing that nobody in Fairy Tail possesses that type of magic.[292] When they arrive, the perpetrator has disappeared and he confronts Mest, whose Memory Control Magic has worn off. Soon after, the Grimoire Hearts members arrive from the bubbles released by Capricorn,[293] and he prepares to fight them [294] He proceeds to defeat most of the members, but Zancrow shows up and incinerates the rest of them for being too weak. Zancrow launches his flames at Natsu, who tries to consume them before realizing he can't and is heavily wounded. Zancrow then explains to Natsu that he is a God Slayer, and is thus superior.[295]
Natsu and Zancrow battle and Zancrow overwhelms him completely. Zancrow, however, is held back by Makarov before he can hurt Natsu any further and when Makarov let Zancrow go, Natsu unites the flames of Dragons and Gods in the Dragon God's Brilliant Flame attack, defeating Zancrow at last.[296] Natsu falls over shortly after finishing the battle.[297] Wendy arrives at some point and tries to heal the wounded Makarov and Natsu, however, she can't properly heal Natsu yet, as Makarov notes that the evil staining his muffler is tainting him.[298]
When Natsu wakes up, his muffler and his clothes have been fixed thanks to Wendy. He then perks up when the scent of the man he met on Galuna Island, Zalty, reaches his nose.[299] He heads off to the direction of the scent and when he arrives, Zeref is unconscious and Ultear has disappeared, feeling Natsu’s presence. Suddenly, a sprout in the ground grows into a large tree almost hitting him. He then sees Ultear sitting on one of the branches. Natsu recognizes her as ‘that one guy’ and mildly accuses her as a cross-dresser. Ultear denies this and clarifies that she is in fact in her true form, she then asks him where his future will go as she reveals that she is the leader of the Seven Kin of Purgatory, Ultear Milkovich. Ultear also asks him about what plans does Fairy Tail have for Zeref, shocking Natsu and Happy about the identity of the Killing Mage. Ultear says that she must repay debt, bearing in mind that Natsu had hit her back in Galuna Island. Natsu climbs the tree and complains that Grimoire Heart’s appearance has interrupted the exam. She hits him with her orb and Natsu recoils from the tree. Ultear then produces many orbs and attacks Natsu with her ability “Flash Forward”. [300]
Natsu is next seen during Kain and Lucy;s fight. He appears right when Kain was about to kill Lucy, kicking him in the face and sends him flying over to Ultear.[301] After a short talk, Natsu and Lucy high-fives each other and both agrees that they should defeat Kain and Ultear together. [302]
After Kain says to handle Natsu and Lucy to herself, Ultear takes her leave. Natsu attempts to stop Ultear but is stopped when Kain gets in his way. Lucy tries to help but is under Kain’s Magic. He reveals that he was capable of taking a string of her hair while chasing her before and forces her to attack Natsu. Natsu successfully avoids one of Lucy’s attacks and prepares to counterattack, but Lucy’s unpredictable movements proves to be too much for him to avoid. Natsu, Lucy, Kain, and Happy battle briefly, and Kain gains the upper-hand. Kain eventually captures Lucy and she is tortured by Kain. Natsu asks her to run, but she refuses, prompting Kain to kill Lucy by crushing her head. Before he can do it, Natsu uses the doll to manipulate Lucy's body into a counterattack, in which Kain takes a brutal beating. Further boosting Lucy with his own Dragon Slayer Magic, Natsu gives Happy the doll so that he can use the speed to further power Lucy, who finally defeats Kain Hikaru with a brutal kick on the face.[303]
After the battle is over, Lucy and Happy struggle, and finally manga to pull Natsu out of the boulders he was trapped in. Once out, he suggests that they get back to where Makarov is resting and that they would have Pantherlily or Carla go and search for Grimoire Heart's ship.[304]
When Natsu arrives at Makarov's resting site, Doranbolt arrives, Natsu asks where he went, and Lucy says that it is Mest of the Council. He then tells Lucy that his name is really Doranbolt and that he's there to help them, which surprises Happy and Carla. He then says that with his powers, everyone can leave the island, but Natsu and the others refuse. Despite Doranbolt's attempts to convince them otherwise, they all decide to stay on the island and fight,[305] and Natsu, along with Wendy and Lucy, try to convince Doranbolt to stall the council while they defeat Grimoire Heart.[306]
Later, he, along with Wendy, Happy, Carla and Lucy, are confronted and beaten in one blow by Grimoire Heart member Bluenote Stinger.[307] When Cana arrives and fights Bluenote, she asks Natsu to distract him while she builds up Magical power. However, their plan fails when Bluenote uses his Gravity Magic to push them to the ground.[308] As Bluenote is about to kill Cana, Natsu uses his Fire Dragon's Roar on the ground in order to counter Bluenote's Magic and attack him, only to be thrown back. However, Cana uses this as an opening to cast Fairy Glitter, but fails to attack Bluenote when it is parried by the ground.[309]
When Bluenote is about to kill Cana, Gildarts arrives just in time to stop him, much to everyone's relief and delight.[310] After Gildarts' arrival, he orders everyone to get away, and the force from Gildarts and Bluenote clashing sends Natsu and the others flying.[311] After realizing that they'd only be in Gildarts' way, Natsu and the others leave.[312][313] Later, when Azuma destroys the Great Tenrou Tree, Natsu is seen collapsing along with the other members of Fairy Tail.[314]
After Erza defeats Azuma, Natsu, Lucy and Wendy regroup with the rest of the guild at the main camp, and they are shocked that so many are injured.[315] Natsu then resolves to go and defeat Hades, asking for Lucy and Happy to come with him. Wendy and the other Exceed decide to come along. Along the way to Hades, they meet Gray and Erza, telling them that he is always needing to be saved by somebody as well. Natsu, Erza, Gray, Lucy, and Wendy then arrive at Hades' ship, ready to fight.[316] Hades tells them to come when they're ready, and Natsu yells for him to come down there and fight to no avail. He then asks Happy and the other Exceeds to find and destroy the ship's power source, just in case it flies during their fight. Wendy also casts Troia on Natsu as another preventative measure for Natsu's transportation sickness. The group then enters the ship using stairs made by Gray, Natsu being fired up that he can finally fight Hades. Natsu starts the fight and after a barrage of attacks, Hades explains that normal mistakes eventually become experience, but in their case, the mistake of fighting him will lead to them having no future. As he emerges unscathed by their attacks, everyone is shocked and Natsu notes how the level of his Magic Power has changed.[317]
Hades remarks that Makarov's kids are interesting and Natsu asks if he is an acquaintance of the old man. Hades reveals to them that he was Fairy Tail's second master and nominated Makarov as his successor. Natsu rushes toward him calling him a liar but is then attacked by Hades, resulting in a big explosion. Hades then talks about the origin of the name Fairy Tail and walks to Natsu, saying their journey is about to end.[318] He is angry that he entrusted his will to Makarov as he doesn't like the changes made to the guild in his absense. Natsu says there is nothing wrong with change and that Hades lives like he's already dead, compared to them who are living with their lives on the line. He then says if you don't have the courage to change things, you might as well be dead. Natsu is shot multiple times with Hades' Bullet Magic, and tells Natsu to hate Makarov for causing them to suffer. Natsu says Hades is the old man's rival; this prompts Hades to ready a finishing blow, but lightning strikes this ship and hits his arm before he can attack.[319]
Laxus appears and asks Natsu if Hades is the old man's rival. Hades is shocked, recognizing Laxus from when he was younger, calling him the brat and is quickly headbutted by Laxus.[320] Natsu watches as Laxus battles Hades on mostly even terms until Laxus is hit by one of Hades explosion attacks. As Hades uses a big attack to finish Laxus, Natsu is given Laxus' lightning. Natsu thanks Laxus for the meal and asks Laxus why he did this, saying he is so much weaker than him. Laxus tells him it's not about being weak or strong and says that someone with the guild's brand should be the one that defeats Hades, unlike him. Laxus tells him to take the pain that was caused to the guild and return it 100 fold. Wendy notices as the flame and lightning are fusing together in Natsu, who proclaims that this is the Lightning Flame Dragon 100 Fold Payback.[321] With Laxus' Magical Power inside him, Natsu seems to overpower Hades with a combination of Fire Dragon Slayer Magic and Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic. With his Lightning Fire Dragon's Roar, Hades seems to be defeated.[322] However, Hades recovers from Natsu's attacks, unaffected. He then unleashes his Devil's Eye by removing his eye patch. Having exhausted his Magical Power, Natsu can do nothing but watch as Hades prepares to kill them.[323]
Hades explains that using magic is to sink into darkness and in the deep abyss, there is the "Magic of One." He says he is close to attaining this magic, but the last stretch is the most difficult to reach. He further explains that Zeref's awakening will create "The Great World of Magic" which will allow him to attain the "Magic of One."[324] He then uses Hidden Magic, the Punishers of Heavens: Nemesis which allows him to summon powerful demons from even the lowliest of rocks. Wendy, Erza, Gray, and Lucy are all scared realizing these demons are very strong; Natsu grabs Lucy arm, saying that he's got a comrade right beside him after all. He tells them the words of Gildarts, that fear isn't evil but that it allows them to learn their own weaknesses. He says that when learning their own weakness, they can grow stronger and kinder; now that they've learned their weakness, he says they need to grow stronger now and face their enemies head on. He says that alone, the fear they have might be too much to bear, but they're all beside each other. He yells that there is nothing to fear since they're not alone. Hades says Natsu's words are empty and that he will end them. Everyone resolves to not give up despite not having any magic power, and they rush to attack Hades. Hades asks them what they can do with such a small amount of power, and then, he orders his demons to dance. Natsu trips while running to battle, but Lucy and Wendy grab him and throw him forward. Gray and Erza then kick Natsu further forward, allowing Natsu to close in on Hades. A big explosion then occurs on Hades ship.[325]
After the explosion, Natsu was able to punch Hades in the face. Hades says this is impossible and wonders how his dark magic had no effect. He realizes his magic is gone as Natsu punches him again. Hades realizes his heart was destroyed, which was done by Happy and Carla. Back on Tenrou Island, Rustyrose says that the heart was the secret to Hades' great magic and longevity, the "Devil's Heart." Natsu attacks Hades more with big barrage of kicks and punches. After Ultear has fully restored Tenrou Island, Natsu and everyone gets their magic power returned. After more attacks on Hades, Natsu declares that this their victory; however, Hades pushes Natsu back saying that the devil will not sleep until he has defeated them. Laxus then punches Hades in the face and tells Fairy Tail to attack now. Lucy uses Capricorn, Wendy uses the Heavenly Dragon's Wing Attack, Gray uses Ice Bringer and Erza uses Tenrin - Pentagram Sword to attack Hades. Natsu then attacks, first with the Wave Dragon's Special Technique Revision, then with Crimson Explosion Lightning Blade. Hades is apparently defeated by this, and Natsu yells as "This is our guild!" as the sun rises on Tenrou Island.[326] The battle ends and the Exceed finally arrive while being chased by Grimore Heart members. Natsu and the others have already run out of Magic, but then the members in the camp come to the rescue. While the others are enjoying their reunion, Natsu is seen being fired up to continue the exam. He is reminded by Gajeel that he has severe wounds, but he says that he still has his newly acquired lightning-enhanced powers... Before collapsing to the ground, exhausted. Erza comments it's because he ate something other than fire.[327]
After the war is over, Natsu rests at the camps base with the rest of his guild mates. The rest is cut short when Acnologia arrives and starts attacking the guild members. Makarov uses his Titan Magic to hold off the Dragon, and tells the guild to run and heed his final order. Natsu along with the others try to protest, but when he is grabbed by Laxus and sees the tear in his eye he agrees.[328]
Ignoring Laxus' protest, Natsu goes back and fights Acnologia along with the rest of the guild who follows him. As Fairy Tail is fighting, a mysterious girl watches with a smile and clasps her hands. Acnologia eventually flies into the sky, and prepares to destroy the island with one final attack. All the Fairy Tail members on the island hold hands, as Tenrou Island is destroyed by the Acnologia's Dragon Breath.[329]
X791 arc
Once Tenrou Island reappears, the new Fairy Tail Guild finds Natsu buried in dirt.[330] Natsu who wakes up, surprised to see them there and confused about how much Jet and Droy have aged. He says that they were hit by Acnologia's attack and then wonders where everyone else is, and Natsu watches as Mavis Vermilion reveals that she was the one who saved them using Fairy Sphere. Natsu and the others then return to the Fairy Tail Guild, and as Romeo Conbolt is about to be attacked by Teebo and his gang, Natsu kicks Teebo across the room. He is then seen along with all of the other Fairy Tail members who were lost 7 years ago and says that we're home. Natsu sees Romeo and says he's all grown up. Romeo cries in happiness and welcomes everyone back..[331]
At the party celebrating their return, Natsu is impressed by Romeo's new Fire Magic abilities. Romeo reveals to Natsu that he has been taking classes from Totomaru. Natsu asks to come, but Romeo says it would be best not to, as Totomaru still holds a grudge against him.[332] Later on, after Natsu and Happy realize they have no savings at their house so they follow Lucy to see her father, hoping he would lend them something. When they arrive at Love & Lucky, and Lucy asks to see her father but they are informed that Mr. Heartfilia had died one month ago.[333]
Natsu, along with Happy, travel back to Magnolia Town with Lucy. On the way, they encounter two girls talking about how terrible their fathers are and Natsu screams for them to be quiet. Lucy tells Natsu to stop yelling at them and apologizes for making them worry about her.[334] Later, Natsu and Happy bring Lucy a job to cheer her up.[335]
Key of the Starry Sky arc
Note: Events in this arc occur only in the anime and do not constitute canon material.
At the Fairy Tail Guild, Natsu is searching for a job. Happy presents him with one, which requests the capture of an escaped convict named Velveno. The client's name is Count Balsamico, and Macao comments that he is hosting a Magic Dance Ball; a dance for magicians only, and that Velveno has been rumored to be making an appearance at the ball. Outside, Lucy tries to teach Natsu how to dance, but he accidentally steps on her feet, so Lisanna offers to teach him instead. Natsu, along with Happy and the others, all end up going to the Magic Dance Ball, and once there, they are greeted by the client's daughter, Aceto. Gray, Natsu and Elfman station themselves inside to monitor the dancers, and Natsu and Gray are quickly grabbed by two women who want to dance.
When Velveno appears at the peak of the party, Natsu tries to attack him, but it is ineffective due to Velveno's Magic. He is then shocked when Velveno reveals that he only came to the ball to ask for Aceto's hand in marriage. When Natsu tells Lucy he is going to leave, she responds by asking him to stay with her for a little while longer, and they begin to dance on a floating platform. However, the moment is ruined when Natsu states that Wendy's Troia ran out and Lucy can be heard screaming to be let down.[336]
Natsu, Lucy, Wendy, Happy and Carla take on a mission to deliver precious cargo to their client by train, and during the trip Natsu gets motion sick. When Wendy offers to cast Troia on him, they find out that he has created an immunity against the spell. He steps out of the carriage so that he feels better, and while vomiting, he meets three large-buttock people who introduce themselves as the Jiggle Butt Gang. They get friendly with him and use him as an excuse to enter the cart, taking both the freight and Wendy hostage. A while later, Natsu comes to his senses due to the cart having stopped, and upon hearing that Wendy is in trouble, jumps straight up to the roof of the cart and heads towards the gang. Though Wendy tries to stop Natsu from attacking and asks the Gang to surrender peacefully, Natsu angrily uses his Magic and sends the gang flying from the train-top. With the gang finally taken care of, the group continue their journey and eventually reach the station where their client waits. However, as they arrived later than the arranged time, the client states he will only pay them half the amount he originally agreed. [337]
In Lucy's Apartment, Natsu and Happy are yelled at by Lucy to not read her novel again. Natsu asks Lucy to go on the mission he and Happy took and that he is starving, but Lucy then kicks them out of her apartment. After Lucy accidentally turns herself invisible and heads to the guild for help, Natsu is in the guild telling the others that Lucy is being mean to him, and the others all laugh at her. He is then hit with a chair from Reedus after Lucy starts a brawl. He and other guild members start to have a fight with each other, and he is hit towards Lucy, slamming into her. He then hears her voice and scent and finds her. He tries to think of a way to fix Lucy from her invisibility, and comes up with burning her. He and Romeo both try this plan, but it fails. He then paints on Lucy's face, creating a horrible image. After Gray's attempt of fixing Lucy using his Magic, the ice melts and the others state it's creepy. Natsu along with the others watches Freed trying and failing to fix Lucy using his runes. He then ask Lucy what is she laughing about, when her clothes start to dispensary as well. He and the others start to forget about Lucy, until he and Happy remember her. Happy then slams into Lucy, flinging the ointment bottle all over everyone, causing everyone to go invisible.[338]
At the guild Natsu is asked by Mirajane what they plan to do with Lisanna's grave in the cathedral. Happy reminds him that they were the ones who made it, and Mira suggests keeping it as a memento and changing the description to honor the Archbishop. When Romeo later asks him what's wrong, Lucy states that Natsu's tired from working in the fields, and that he's taking a nap. As Michelle arrives Natsu immediately wakes up, and as she enters the guild he asks Lucy who she is. Natsu asks Happy what's with Michelle, and Happy states that she's definitely a relative of Lucy. Along with the others he hears how Michelle has been looking for Lucy. He tells Lucy to open up the case that Michelle has bought with her, as he and Lucy are wondering what the item in the case is. When the item inside is revealed to be some strange rod-like device, he thinks it's some kind of weapon, but Lucy denies it. Natsu and Happy later ask Lucy to go on a job with them to capture some bandits. Natsu argues with the plan that Erza comes up with to get the criminals, saying he can't ride the cart she planned to use, but later re-organises the plan so that he flies with Happy following the cart. Later he is attacking the head bandit, and helps the team to defeat them. When Michelle later trips and drops the mysterious memento, he watches it float and start glowing.[339]
Later, somewhere in the forest, Natsu and Happy are fishing when Natsu suddenly sees lightning, thinks it is Laxus, and heads to where the lightning is coming from. While heading there, he sees Gajeel, who is also running in the same direction as he is. They start fighting about defeating Laxus until Laxus shows up. Natsu challenges him to a fight and so does Gajeel. Laxus agrees to fight them both. Laxus and Natsu are about to start fighting when Wendy interrupts and says that it should be tomorrow, to which Natsu agrees and declares where they will fight. Later, he arrives at South Park and is surprised to see a festival there. Lucy tells him that his upcoming fight is the reason why they are having a festival. Natsu starts eating some food while Happy says that he has to prepare for tomorrow's fight, but Natsu doesn't think it is necessary. The next day, they start their match. Both of them release a lot of Magic power until Natsu heads for the first attack, but he gets easily punched down and defeated. Happy starts poking him and asks if he is alright.[340]
When Natsu, Wendy and Lucy later arrive at the guild, they see a mysterious trio standing in front of the guild. He, with Wendy and Lucy, is shocked and wonders how the three came from Edolas. However, they also notice that though the three almost look the same, they are somewhat different, mainly because here Hughes is a female. Natsu calls out to them but they say that they have never met them before. He listens as the female Hughes demands the guild to hand Lucy Heartfilia. He and the guild instantly asks why the trio want Lucy, and state that they will not hand her over. Then, the Sugarboy look-alike releases his Magic and surrounds the Mages with globules of thick mucus-like substance. As Natsu tries to counter-attack, the phlegm consumes and immobilizes him and all his team-mates, and they warn those who have not yet been touched by the substance to go away. They enemies state that they will attack again if Lucy is not handed over, but upon hearing these words, Natsu stands and attacks the group, telling Lucy to run. However, the Hughes use her Magic to control Natsu and attack the others. Natsu then joins an act by Michelle, pointing at Levy and claiming that she is Lucy. When the trio decides that Lucy must be the one who ran away, they use Natsu as a distraction to escape. Later, Natsu and Happy are about to fight Sugarboy until a giant octopus interrupts their fight, the man riding it telling Sugarboy not to be distracted. Natsu thinks that the octopus is Byro, but Earth Land Sugarboy soon reveals through conversation that the man atop the octopus is Earth Land's Byro, who appears much younger than his Edolas counterpart.[341]
Sugarboy is told to eliminate Natsu by Byro while he escapes. Natsu and Sugarboy begin to battle, however Natsu's attacks have no effect on Sugarboy because of his Slime Magic, as the slime continues to absorb Natsu's attacks. The slime attacks him again and again while Natsu is unable to do a thing. When the attacking stops, Natsu has Happy take him into the sky and throw him into the slime, hoping that he will be able to somehow overcome the Magic that way. Whilst in the slime Natsu releases so much Magic power that the slime explodes from absorbing too much. Natsu comes flying down to attack Sugarboy, but instead they get stuck together. They are both trying to free themselves when Gray attacks the slime that is holding them together, freeing them.[342]Back at the guild, Natsu and Gray agree to take revenge on the Legion Corps for stealing Lucy's Memento. Then, everyone starts discussing about the crusade, but Natsu is completely out of the loop. Later, he, with the rest of Team Natsu, Wendy and Carla, arrives at the Heartfilia Konzern mansion, planning on searching it for some clues on the memento and the events surrounding it. Natsu, with Gray, Erza, Happy, Wendy and Carla, starts investigating the mansion bottom floors. Natsu and Happy later walk into the study room to find the rest of the group trying to solve an anagram, but Natsu disrupts them with a sneeze, causing Erza to attack him. Natsu listens as Carla says that there are words as "Myth","Duo", and "Great" shown. He continues to hear Lucy figuring out that it's connected to a book called "The Two Great Myths", which leads her to a book called "Life of the Clockwork" and that she has that book and continues to say that the other myth is another book called "The Key to the Starry Heavens".
Suddenly, the door handle expands and breaks the door, revealing an Exceed. Natsu watches as the Exceed appears, wanting the book and saying that he's the head of the Legion Corps, called Samuel. Natsu, along side Gray and Erza, tries to attack Samuel, but Samuel is protected by a man in iron-clad armor, with the mansion taking damage from the attack. The man introduces himself as Dan Straight and Natsu continues to try and attack them even though he always fails. Natsu is awestruck as Dan quickly falls in love with Lucy and starts ranting about how beautiful she is. Natsu and Gray attack Dan as Lucy and Michelle flee, again destroying parts of the mansion. Natsu tries to attack Samuel too, but the cat dodges his attacks and Dan appears, striking Natsu out the window. When Natsu gets up to continue the battle, he discovers that Dan's spear has shrunk him down to the size of a doll, and Happy steps on him. He helplessly watches as Samuel and Dan complete their mission and retreat.[343]
When Natsu and the others return to the guild, Natsu is madepx fun of because of his new shrunken size. Lucy then explains the content of the Key of the Stary Heavens book and the guild then decides to split up into groups to search for the remaining clock pieces. Natsu is teamed up with Lucy, Happy, Michelle and Romeo and they take a boat to find their piece, which is where they meet some mysterious archaeologists. The archaeologists tell them not to search for the pieces any longer, and they quickly refuse. Natsu is then blown off the boat into the water and is unable to do anything, but luckily the archaeologists jump in to save him. As they toss him back he is returned to normal size, landing on the boat.[344] 0
When Romeo notices something gleaming amongst the dunes, Natsu and the others reach a strange looking device standing stark in the wasteland. Believing it is some kind of entrance to the place they are searching for, Natsu, Lucy and Romeo ponder over how to activate the device, before soon seeing a small keyhole at its center. Lucy summons Cancer to open it and once it opens, it sucks Natsu and his team down beneath the sand. Natsu and his team awaken at the bottom of a large hole in the ground, only to be blocked by a door. After trying many commands and cliché open terms to get the door to budge, they are allowed entrance when Romeo simply asks the door to open politely. Upon entering, he and the others find a large room with a statue in the middle. When Lucy rotates the statue the walls open to reveal massive columns and statues that slowly move towards him and his group, tring and squash them. Narrowly avoiding death by climbing into the mouths of the statues and flopping out it's nostrils, Lucy once again rotates the statue, only the other way this time. However, this merely causes the trap to activate again.
Fortunately, Virgo is summoned and digs a hole in the ground, causing them to fall yet again. When Natsu's group lands, they find themselves in a long room lined with what appear to be tombs. Natsu attacks one of them which has a similar appearance to Gray, and he activates another trap that sends a large bolder rolling towards them. When Natsu and the others run down the corridor, they encounter a narrow bridge, and after running along it, they realize another bolder is rolling from the other direction too, so that they will be squashed in the middle when the two collide. Before this can happen though, they jump off the bridge and down into the chasm below; Natsu tells Romeo to use their Magic to grab the rocky formations to stop their fall. With no other way to go, the group decides to head down. Natsu and his group explore the underground cavern. The group is soon encountered by Earth Land Coco and Dan Straight. [345]
Inside the underground crypt, Dan instantly spots Lucy and rants off about her until Natsu attacks Dan; he deflects it with his shield, which then sets Lucy on fire. They use the distraction to escape but Dan stops them. Natsu again attacks Dan, but he reflects the attack again, and Lucy is set on fire once more. Dan tries to shrink Natsu, but misses and hits Lucy instead. Coco tells Dan to fight Natsu later, as they still need to find the clock piece. Soon after, Lucy is returned to her normal size but Happy is enlarged into a giant, and manages to step on Natsu again. Natsu accuses him of doing it on purpose, but Happy assures him that he isn't. Natsu yells at Happy to stop flying as he is destroying the ruins, but Happy is worried that if he lands, he might step on Natsu again. Much to Natsu's relief, Dan turns Happy back to his original size. While the others go search the clock part, Natsu remains and states that he will take on Dan and finish him once and for all. Natsu and Dan declare that they will fight with full power, as they don't have time to lose when the clock piece still needs to be found.[346]
For the most part, Natsu uses several of his Fire Dragon Slayer spells to attack Dan though the latter's weapons and armor make the attacks futile. During their fight, Natsu is told that his strength is the same as it was 7 years ago and they he can't win against Dan; this angers Natsu somewhat. Natsu and Dan's battle is soon taken within a chapel inside the ruins, where the rest of Natsu's group has relocated, and while continuing to fight Dan manages to shrink the Fire Dragon Slayer's body once again. While Romeo draws Dan's attention away from the others, Natsu listens in to Happy's and Michelle's plan; basically, the plan is to lure Dan away with Lucy's charms. They act upon it and it proves successful, allowing Natsu time to attack himself with Dan's Habaraki and restore his body back to normal size. Natsu and Romeo use this opportunity to attack the Legion Corps member and they successfully defeat him. Soon afterwards, the entire group sent from Fairy Tail witness the clock part of the desert emerge before their own eyes.[347]
Natsu and his group talk about the clock part. Dan suddenly wakes up behind them; Natsu asks if he wants to fight again but Dan rejects, admitting his defeat. All of them want an explanation as to why the Legion Corps are after the clock parts. He and the others listen as Dan starts the story of his past in the form of a picture book. When Dan says that his first love disappeared, Natsu asks what had happened, and gets his answer as Dan reveals that she was alright and he saw her the next day. When his story finishes, Lucy asks what the Legion's motive is, only to know that he cannot reveal it. Nastu is frustrated by this answer, asking what the point was in Dan telling only his past to them. Later, Natsu complains over how long Dan can chase Lucy. Byro appears later, scolding Dan and Coco. Natsu threatens him to give back Lucy's memento or they will have to fight, which Byro agrees to. [348]
At first sight, Natsu laughs at Byro for riding on Kanaloa, which is an octopus, and Happy, disappointed, claims that Natsu sets a bad example for Romeo. Excited, Natsu attacks Kanaloa, thinking that if he defeats Byro it will be like defeating Gildarts himself. However, Kanaloa smashes him with its tentacles and uses its ink to guard itself from Natsu's fire breath. When Kanaloa attacks Dan Straight, Natsu rushes to save him and yells at it for not being able to tell the difference between ally and enemy, only to be told by Byro that the Legionnaires are willing to risk their lives for Zentopia.
When Natsu is trapped under Kanaloa's tentacle and is about to be attacked by its poisonous ink, he is saved by Aquarius' water, who was summoned by Lucy in order to protect him. He thanks both of them afterwards, but gets Aquarius' name wrong. Romeo then pulls Natsu out by using his purple flames, and is ordered by him to keep Kanaloa's mouth open in order for Natsu to shoot flames inside the octupus' mouth. However, his strategy fails, as Kanaloa is revealed to be a member of Legion as well and traps Natsu with one of its tentacles, causing his motion sickness to strike back.
Byro later explains that Fairy Tail must not own all the clock parts, in order to prevent something that would be the end of the world, but Natsu suspiciously expresses that Zentopia must not collect all the parts either and that he suspects the Archbishop is up to something. However, he is forced to remain silent after Kanaloa moves its tentacles, making his motion sickness return, only to be freed shortly afterwards by the Celestial Spirit Taurus, summoned by Lucy. The group then succeeds in defeating Kanaloa in a combined effort, with Natsu striking the decisive blow, which forces even Byro to compliment him, just before confronting Natsu himself.[349]
Natsu attacks Byro but he nullifies it, so he decides to fight using hand-to-hand combat but still gets beaten up. Natsu is carried away by Happy to bring him to safety, but Byro nullifies Happy's Aera and they fall. Later, Natsu tells Byro that lives aren't meant to be tossed away like garbage, and that they're fighting for a friend, but Byro states that guild Mages take jobs only for the money. Natsu replenishes his energy by eating the flames of the crypt candles and then moves to gain the upper hand against Byro, but continues to lose quite horribly. Fortunately, the other Fairy Tail search parties arrive with their clock pieces, and Natsu, Juvia, Lyon, Mirajane, Levy, Gajeel, Cana, Erza and Wendy all attack Byro simultaneously, but even still he nullifies the Magic. Natsu then smells something, and looks up just as a familiar dark guild appears.[350]
When Lucy points out that they are the Oracion Seis, Natsu asks if the person in the center is truly Midnight, who remarks that his name is Brain II now. Midnight explains their goals; Natsu, along with Byro and Dan, charge towards them, but are attacked by Midnight's Darkness Magic, which even Dan can't reflect with his Ricochet. When Cobra and Racer battle the Mages present, they prove to be at a higher level than seven years ago. Angel then destroys the building, and Natsu finds himself in the Blue Pegasus Building when he is woken up by Ichiya. As he and the members recover slowly, they find out that Oracion Seis and Legion Corps were not to be found at the time of rescue. Later, Natsu and the others hear a chime as they fly aboard the Christina in pursuit of the dark guild.[351]
After Natsu, along with the other Fairy Tail Mages, returns to the guild, Natsu is seen eating at a table while the other mages explain the situation. He says that if they search for Oracion Seis, eventually they will find them, to which Gray disagrees, which leads to an argument between the two mages. Natsu later witnesses the return of Freed, Evergreen and Bickslow, as well as Kinana notching some ancient symbols to a wall. After Levy and Freed explain what those symbols mean, Natsu is teamed up with Lucy, Michelle and Elfman, in order to head to a certain location in search of the Infinity Clock. Although he is excited at first, he is disappointed about his inability to fly, since Happy will not be on the same mission as him for the first time. [352]
Grand Magic Games arc
Some time later, Natsu and Max Alors get into a friendly battle. Max has the upperhand at first[353] until Natsu starts getting revved up, and he summons Lightning Flame Dragon Mode attacking him with Lightning Flame Dragon's Roar. Even though it doesn't hit Max, it destroys everything behind him. The power of the spell shocks everyone and Lucy asks Natsu since when has he had the ability to do that, to which he responds since now. Wendy is amazed and Max forfeits the battle as getting hit by something like that would kill him.[354]
Natsu asks who wants to go next, laughs, and then falls because of the exhaustion of using the spell. Gray, who had been watching from the sidelines, says that their power isn’t enough in this world anymore so they decide to go visit Porlyusica for some concoctions that can make them stronger.[355] They go to meet Porlyusica, but she merely hits them with her broom and shoos them away. Once they are a safe distance away, Wendy states that she thinks that Porlyusica is Grandeeney, as they discuss this, Porlyusica reveals that she is not Grandeeney, but her Edolas counterpart and that she had met Grandeeney before and that Grandeeney left some spells for her to give Wendy.[356]
Later, they head back to the Fairy Tail Guild, and Romeo suggests that they participate in the Grand Magic Games, and they decide to enter it.[357] Because of the seven years that they spent inside the Fairy Sphere, The Tenrou Team goes of to train for the tournament at a beach resort. On the second day of training, Natsu and the others are interrupted by Virgo who tells everyone the Celestial Spirit World is in great danger and they need everyone's help. After getting dressed in Celestial Spirit clothes, they are sent to the Spirit World, where they find out that there is no trouble, but all of Lucy's spirits had planned a party for everyone's return. After a day of celebrating, Virgo informs the gang that time runs different in the Spirit World than Earth Land, thus they have lost almost the whole three months of training in the one day.[358]
Once they realize this, Natsu and the others become depressed about their predicament until Erza recommends that they embark on a five-day crash training from hell. As she speaks, a pigeon lands on her head with a note tied to its leg that tells Erza and the others to come to the suspension bridge in the West Woods. They head out to the broken bridge, which fixes it self before them, and meets Jellal Fernandes, Ultear Milkovich, and Meredy on the other side. After a brief reunion, Ultear decides to increase everyone in Fairy Tail's power by activating their "Second Origin" with her Arc of Time. Everyone celebrates more after hearing this, and Natsu hugs Ultear, saying that he is finally starting to see her as a real woman.[359] After Ultear casts the spell, Natsu writhes around on the floor in pain.[360]
After training, Natsu and the others arrive in Crocus. They have a brief meeting with the rest of the guild members that arrived and Natsu goes to explore the city. [361] While exploring, he encounters Sting Eucliffe and Rouge Cheney, who mock Natsu for being a Dragon Slayer that lost to a Dragon. They say that they are ‘true’ Dragon Slayers, since they killed the Dragons that raised them. [362] Natsu later on returns to the Honey Bone Hotel and is scolded by Erza for being late, but is interrupted when Lisanna and Elfman walk in begins to greet each other. However, their meeting is cut short when it is announced that the preliminaries for the Grand Magic Games is about to begin. They are informed that they must be one of the first eight teams to arrive at the arena, Domas Flau , in order to be in the games. Also, all the team members must make it there. Natsu and the others are worried because Wendy is nowhere to be seen but Elfman decides to take her place and they set off to go to the Sky Labyrinth. By battling and defeating other guilds for their maps, Natsu and the others secure a place in the games, despite coming in last. [363] Natsu and the others change into their team outfits before they head out to hear which teams made it out of the labyrinth before them. As the teams are introduced, they learn that Raven Tail has entered into the competition, and are angry when they learn that they are the ones who injured Wendy and Carla.[364] He is also shocked to learn that there is a second team from Fairy Tail in the running, consisting of Gajeel Redfox, Mirajane Strauss, Laxus Dreyar, Juvia Lockser, and Jellal Fernandes disguised as Mystogan. When Natsu discovers them, he yells out at them angrily stating that he had no intention of losing, even to his own guild mates. Everyone agrees, and after they hear the rules for the first event of the games, they choose Gray to enter for them in that round.[365] When Gray loses the event and the ground mocks him and Fairy Tail for it, Natsu comes to his defense.[366]
Because of his enhanced hearing, Natsu hears Lucy say Asuka’s name and immediately heads out to find her. He notices Flare Corona’s hair and destroys it, both saving Asuka Connell and giving Lucy the chance to fight back.[367] However, Lucy was ultimately defeated due to Obra and Natsu stands at her side to cheer her up, calling her amazing and promises that they will turn the tide in no time. [368]
After seeing that Lucy is comfortable, Natsu goes back to the stands and watches the other matches in interest. With Jellal's surprising defeat he was left shocked and confused. After the first day games have ended, Natsu joins the rest of Fairy Tail in a post defeat toast, cheering with the rest when Makarov stated that their goal was number 1 in Fiore. He then gets into a brawl with his guild mates, easily beating Max. After Bacchus "introduced" himself, Natsu was very surprised to hear that the [[ua uatro Cerberus]] mage fought on even footing with Erza seven years ago.
Despite his team's protests and the name of the event being "Chariot", Natsu decides to participate in the second day's event. However, this proves to be a difficult task for him as his motion sickness activates just after the event started. However, he isn't alone as Gajeel and Sting are revealed to possess the same kind of sickness. The three are then left behind as the others race towards the goal.[369] As the others finish, Natsu, Gajeel and Sting are ridiculed by the audience. Sting decides to give up but Natsu and Gajeel are determined to finish the race. Natsu, wanting to win for his friends that were waiting for them for the last seven years, finishes the race in sixth place, earning his team two points.[370]
After the event, Natsu rests with Wendy[371] and notices that she, Carla, and Porlyusica are missing when he wakes up he and that the scent of an unfamiliar person is in the room. [372] Natsu follows his nose and catches up to a group of masked men, who have grabbed Wendy, Carla and Porlyusica.[373] Natsu immediately pursues the group, fighting his way through the few that try to halt him. Natsu eventually defeats the mages and saves his fellow guild-mates.[374] When the questioned Mages reveal that they were working for Raven Tail, Natsu becomes incredibly angered, for Raven Tail has once again threatened his guild.[375]
After the second day of the tournament ends, Natsu, Lucy, Happy and Carla walk back to their lodging. There, Natsu and the others see Yukino Aguria waiting in front. [376] Natsu is skeptical at first as to why a mage from a rival guild would visit them, thinking that she’s like the other members of Sabertooth who he believes that they think that they’re better than Fairy Tail. After listening to Yukino’s conversation with Lucy, Natsu runs after her when she leaves, asking her to forgive him for being rude. Upon hearing his kind words, Yukino breaks down into a flurry of tears, and confides in Natsu the fact that she was excommunicated from Sabertooth after her loss in battle. After hearing how Yukino was humiliatingly forced to remove her clothes and her guild mark in front of her guildmates, Natsu becomes enraged.[377] He later storms the Sabertooth lodgings, attacking everyone in sight and demanding to meet Sabertooth's guild master, Jiemma, who boldly steps out to face him.[378]
Natsu challenges Jiemma, and wishes to fight him, but when Jiemma claims not to understand Natsu's motives except that it was out of a sense of pride, Natsu rushes at the Guild Master. Originally thinking Natsu unworthy of his time, Jiemma sends one of his other Mages, Dobengal, to fight, but was quickly defeated. Sting then chooses to step forward and take on the intruder, but Jiemma stops him and takes Natsu's blow instead. The Guild Master easily counters Natsu's first blow, but is then hit by a barrage of attacks from the smaller opponent. Natsu then uses a powerful attack, which was defended by the sudden appearance of Minerva. Minerva asks Natsu to back off, so that they all might save face, in exchange for the return of Happy unharmed, who she had tied up. Natsu accepts and leaves, but not before telling Sabertooth that Fairy Tail won't lose to their guild, and to treasure their comrades.[379]
During the third day of the Games, during Laxus' battle, Natsu expresses surprise that the the S-Class Mage is being beaten down by Raven Tail. However, when the battle he witnesses is revealed to be an illusion, he is even more stunned. Natsu is exasperated when he discovers that Laxus has been fighting the entire Raven Tail guild, and later he wishes Wendy good luck in her battle with Chelia Blendy.[380]
As Wendy and Chelia engage in battle, Natsu is seen to be surprised with Chelia's Wind Magic.[381] Later, Natsu is excited when Wendy uses her Shattering Light: Sky Drill and as the attack hits Chelia, Natsu, alongside his comrades, celebrates Wendy's triumph.[382] However, Natsu is utterly dumbfounded after seeing that Chelia is standing in the arena uninjured and smiling even after having been hit by an attack of such intensity.[383]
As the battle between Wendy and Chelia continues, Natsu is seen to be very worried for his guildmate as he cries out Wendy's name.[384] However, seeing Wendy's determination and amazing strategy, Natsu is impressed with Wendy's strength.[385] After the fight ends in a draw, Natsu is seen to be very excited and pleased with the result of the fight.[386]
After the battles of the 3rd day, Natsu heads to a bar with his guildmates to celebrate. While there, he begins barrel surfing with Happy, despite warnings from everyone on how dangerous it is and later gets Lisanna to start barrel surfing.[387]
On the fourth day of the Grand Magic Games, Natsu is seen cheering Lucy on as she participates in the Naval Battle.[388] As only Lucy and Minerva are left, Minerva starts attacking Lucy heavily, which worries Natsu as he screams her name.[389] As Minerva starts torturing Lucy, Natsu yells at her to stop.[390] Natsu, along with Gray and Erza, stands shocked as Minerva screams about Sabertooth's strength. Minerva is then declared the winner, and as Lucy stays motionless, Natsu gets even more worried.[391]
Natsu and Gray run over to Lucy, when she is tossed out by Minerva. Natsu looks at Minerva with an infuriated expression, and Team Sabertooth, with an exception of Rogue, stand in front of Minerva, confronting him, Erza and Gray. Natsu, along with Gray, wants to attack them but is stopped by Erza. After Erza threaten Sabertooth, Natsu, with the rest of the members of Team Fairy Tail A and B are in the infirmary with Lucy. Makarov arrives and announces that the administrators have told them to join both Teams together, leaving Natsu and the others shocked. Natsu says that he will definitely avenge Lucy, and won't forgive Sabertooth for laughing at her. Natsu along with Gray, Gajeel, Erza, and Laxus, becomes part of the new reorganized team. Out in the battlefield, Natsu and Gajeel glare at the Twin Dragons of Sabertooth, and says he is all fired up.[392]
Later, a tag battle between Team Blue Pegasus and Team Quatro Puppy is announced. Ichiya and The Rabbit would face Bacchus and Rocker. Natsu is utterly shocked to see that the Rabbit is in fact an exceed from Extalia, more specifically, Nichiya.[393] After Ichiya wins his battle which was a two against one due to Nichiya being knocked out at the very start, Natsu is surprised and impressed by Ichiya's power.[394]
After a tag battle between Team Mermaid Heel and Team Lamia Scale resulting in a draw, Fairy Tail and Sabertooth's battle begins. A determined Natsu and Gajeel enter the battle field, ready to face off with the Twin Dragons of Sabertooth.[395]
Natsu and Gajeel start the fight quickly getting into Sting and Rogue's faces and attacking them simultaneously. The twin dragons are knocked back, surprising the audience. Sting attacks Natsu with the White Dragon's Roar and Rogue uses the Shadow Dragon's Slash against Gajeel; he easily deflects the attack with his Iron Dragon's Sword technique and sends Rogue flying. Natsu grabs Rogue and runs to Sting and hits both of them with the Fire Dragon's Wing Attack. Sting admits they are strong and Natsu questions if they really beat dragons with their level of power. Sting reminds them that they killed their dragon parents and he and Rogue use White Drive and Shadow Drive to power themselves up.
The twin dragons quickly attack and Natsu and Gajeel are put on the defensive. Sting tells Natsu of how he looked up and desired to surpass him. In his recent attack, the White Dragon's Claw, he left a mark on Natsu that would immobilize him. Natsu smiles as Sting rushes in to attack and punches Sting in the face; the latter is confused as to how Natsu was able to move and realizes that he burned the immobilizing mark away. Sting then uses the Dragon Slayer Secret Art: Holy Nova on Natsu resulting a large explosion; however, Natsu easily stops the attack with one hand which surprises Sting along with the rest of Sabertooth.
Rogue and Sting are beaten up more as Lector and Frosh watch in disbelief. Seconds before Team Fairy Tail can be named winner, Natsu is left speechless when he sees that both Sting and Rogue have entered Dragon Force mode.[396]
Natsu stands and awaits the newly powered-up Dragon Slayer's attacks, however, before the two can advance, Sting states that he is enough to defeat his opponents, and moves to take the two alone. Gajeel comments that Sting is underestimating them, but Natsu is unsure about this, stating that he can sense Sting's strength, shortly before being attacked by the Sabertooth Mage. He and Gajeel try to combine their attacks, but Sting is able to both dodge and respond with great speed. Eventually, unleashing a huge attack, Sting crushes the ground of the arena and sends the three of them down into the catacombs below. Despite Sting's immense strength, Natsu refuses to give up and tries to fight back, but Sting unleashes an incredibly powerful move, sending both him and Gajeel flying and seemingly defeating them.[397]
Before the judges can declare that fight over though, both Natsu and Gajeel stand up, commenting on Sting's power but also saying that they have been watching and memorising all of his habits in battle; getting into a fight over the position of Sting's foot when he moves to make an attack. Being unable to come to a united decision, Natsu becomes annoyed with Gajeel and pushes him into a nearby mining cart, sending the studded Mage rolling away. With Gajeel now out of the picture, Natsu turns to return Sting's earlier move, challenging both of the Dragon Slayer to a one on two battle.[398]
Magic and Abilities
Fire Dragon Slayer Magic (火の滅竜魔法 Ka no Metsuryū Mahō): He is adept with his Dragon Slayer Magic and makes use of it in many different ways in combat.[399][400][401] As with all Dragon Slayers, he can consume his respective element, with the exception of that which he has created, to replenish his energy reserves. The heat of his fire can increase in temperature, which is proportional to Natsu's emotional state. Natsu subconsciously used this against Erigor; his flame's heat significantly rose as he got more enraged. This is also called the Flame of Emotion.[402] He incorporates the flames he ignites into his fighting style, greatly increasing the damage of his blows.[403] As such, Natsu's Magic revolves around the usage of fire that can spout from any part of his body.[404][405] Natsu's ability to eat flames gives him immunity to most types of flames and allows him to spew fire from his lungs.[406] This fire is exceptionally strong - equivalent to a dragon's fire - being able to burn even through metal.[407] He can even use his flames to create a propulsive effect.[408] The type of fire he uses can be changed. For example, it can be solidified to cling to surfaces.[409]
- Fire Dragon's Roar (火竜の咆哮 Karyū no Hōkō): Natsu breathes a long line of fire that becomes a large fireball, which burns his opponent.[410]
- Fire Dragon's Claw (火竜の鉤爪 Karyū no Kagitsume): Natsu ignites his feet with a very large flame to increase the power of his kicks. He can also use the strong ensuing flames to jet-propel him in any direction he wishes.[411]
- Fire Dragon's Iron Fist (火竜の鉄拳 Karyū no Tekken): Natsu engulfs his fist in large flames and punches his opponent which makes his opponent fly away.[412] Natsu renamed this ability Cat Fire (猫ファイアーNeko Faiā) while wearing cat mask.
- Fire Dragon's Wing Attack (火竜の翼撃 Karyū no Yokugeki): Natsu takes hold of his opponent and ignites his arms and hands on fire, in the form of dragon wings as support, to throw them far away while burning them.[413]
- Fire Dragon's Sword Horn (火竜の剣角 Karyū no Kenkaku): Natsu ignites his entire body on fire in order to ram into his opponent at full speed, then launch them high into the air with his large horn of fire.[414]
- Fire Dragon's Brilliant Flame (火竜の煌炎 Karyū no Kōen): Natsu creates fire on both hands, and brings them together, creating a giant explosion that destroys everything around him. In the anime, he ignites both of his hands and combines the flame, but instead of creating a giant explosion, he throws a very large fireball at his enemy, blowing them away.[415]
- Fire Dragon's Flame Elbow (火竜の炎肘 Karyū no Enchū): After Natsu ignites the tip of his elbow, he uses that flame to strengthen his fist, and rocket the opponent high in the air.[416]
- Fire Dragon's Crushing Fang (火竜の砕牙 Karyū no Saiga): With his hand ignited with a large flame, Natsu gouges his hand into his enemy and quickly swipes his enemy away from his sight.[417]
- Dragon Slayer's Secret Art (滅竜奥義 Metsuryū Ōgi):
- Crimson Lotus: Fire Dragon's Fist (紅蓮・火竜拳 Guren Karyū Ken): Lighting his hands on fire, Natsu rapidly punches his opponent. Each punch causes a fiery explosion. This attack was used to defeat Gajeel, the Dragon Slayer that uses iron, and as an added result, had enough destructive power to destroy the entire guild building of Phantom Lord. In the anime, Natsu defeated Erigor with it in battle.[418]
- Crimson Lotus: Exploding Flame Blade (紅蓮・爆炎刃 Guren Bakuenjin): After a series of destructive attacks, Natsu finishes with a torrent of blade-shaped flames that strikes the enemy in a spiral formation. Every time the enemy is hit with a blade, it explodes and burns the enemy. Described as the ultimate Dragon Slayer technique, this attack is so powerful and destructive that it has been shown to smash through dragon scales ---- which is known to have extremely tremendous endurance capabilities. This attack was used to defeat Laxus, the Dragon Slayer that uses Lightning, and even caused Gildarts to take two steps back.[419]
- Hidden Fire Form - Crimson Lotus: Phoenix Blade
("不知火型" - 紅蓮・鳳凰剣 "Shiranui Gata" : Guren Hōō Ken): Natsu ignites his entire body with the power of the Flame of Rebuke. He then charges towards the enemy and delivers a devastating punch that blows up the enemy, then proceeds to headbutt him. This is also described as The Ultimate Dragon Slayer Technique and the Dragon Slayer's Hidden Art, Sea Fire Style. This could be Natsu's strongest attack, as not even Flame Lotus: Exploding Flame Blade was able to defeat Zero's strongest attack, though this may be because Exploding Flame Blade focuses on piercing penetration instead of mass destructive damage. This unstoppable and destructive attack was used to defeat Zero.[420]
- Hidden Fire Form - Crimson Lotus: Phoenix Blade
- Dragon God's Brilliant Flame (竜神の煌炎 Ryūjin no Kōen): The same as the Fire Dragon's Brilliant Flame, but on a much larger scale. Natsu summons flames on both fists just like the original technique, but combines Fire Dragon's flames on his right hand with Fire God flames on his left hand. The moment he brings them together, he creates a giant explosion powerful enough to destroy the surrounding area and blow the enemy a major distance away. It was first seen being used to defeat Zancrow in the Tenrou Island Arc.[421]
Lightning Flame Dragon Mode (モード雷炎竜 Mōdo Raienryū): After eating Laxus Dreyar's lightning and having the flame and lightning inside his body fused together, Natsu gained the ability to use his Fire Dragon Slayer Magic enhanced with lightning.[422] Even though it was momentary, Natsu is able to call upon it when he is in a state of anger. However, this ability places a heavy strain on his body to the point that even a single use is capable of completely draining him of all his energy. Now, due to unlocking the Second Origin, he seems to be able to sustain the power without side effects occuring [423]
- Lightning Flame Dragon's Roar (雷炎竜の咆哮 Raienryū no Hōkō): An alternate, enhanced version of the Fire Dragon's Roar, performed when the user has been empowered with lightning. He/she combines such lightning with his/her fire, gathering them within his/her mouth and subsequently releasing them towards the opponent. This generates an extremely large and destructive sparking blast, which produces an immense amount of light and is capable of traveling for great distances, wreaking havoc wherever it passes, as shown when it crossed the distance of half Tenrou Island generating a large explosion. This spell leaves a huge strain on the user's body.[424] However, despite it being powerful enough to potentially kill someone with a single blow, because it's not part of his element the technique leaves Natsu immensely drained after a single use.[425]
- Lightning Flame Dragon's Fist (雷炎竜の拳 Raienryū no Ken): An alternate version of Fire Dragon's Iron Fist. After having been empowered by lightning, user creates a sphere of such element around his/her fist and uses it to strike the target, electrocuting and damaging them. While empowered by Laxus Dreyar's Lightning Magic, Natsu Dragneel has been noted to combine the flames from his Fire Dragon Slayer Magic with the lightning inside his body, allowing him to punch the opponent with fire and consecutively have a lightning bolt strike them.[426]
- Lightning Flame Dragon's Firing Hammer (雷炎竜の撃鉄 Raienryū no Gekitetsu): A more powerful version of Lightning Flame Dragon's Fist. After having his Second Origin unlocked , the user engulfs lightning and fire around both his/her fist and forearm and uses it to strike the target, to perform a devastating blow. Even with its power diffused by Minerva's defense, it was still strong enough to blow away most of the top floor of a large building.[427]
- Lightning Flame Dragon's Brilliant Flame (雷炎竜の煌炎 Raienryū no Kōen): An alternate, more powerful version of Fire Dragon's Brilliant Flame. User, after having been enhanced by lightning, creates a certain amount of such lightning on his/her left hand, and combines it with the flames he/she produces on his/her right hand. Their contact generates a very large, sparking explosion around the targeted enemy.[428]
- Dragon Slayer's Secret Art Revision (滅竜奥義・改 Metsuryū Ōgi Kai):
- Crimson Lotus: Exploding Lightning Blade (紅蓮・爆雷刃 Guren Bakuraijin): An enhanced version of Crimson Lotus: Exploding Flame Blade, the spell was used by Natsu Dragneel to defeat Hades, empowered by Laxus Dreyar's Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic. After having consumed lightning, the user engulfs one hand with the said lightning and the other with flames from his/her Fire Dragon Slayer Magic. Then, by swinging his/her arms around, he/she extends such elements in length, creating a vortex of fire and lightning which greatly damages the opponent and pushes them away from the user with great force.[429]
Dragon Force (ドラゴンフォース Doragon Fōsu): By consuming Etherion and the Flame of Rebuke respectively, Natsu achieved Dragon Force. This Magic is said to be the final and most powerful state a Dragon Slayer can attain in which the user's body turns into that of a dragon. Their Magic Aura becomes visible and their Dragon Slayer powers increase tremendously.[430]
Transformation (変身魔法 Henshin Mahō): Natsu has mastered the rudimentary skills of Transformation Magic. He was able to transform into Lucy successfully on his first try.[431]
Ushi no Koku Mairi (丑刻の参り Ushikoku no Sanri): During his fight with Kain Hikaru, Natsu briefly gained possession of Kain's doll, Mr. Cursey, and utilized its abilities.
- Fire Dragon Slayer Doll: Natsu uses his Fire Dragon Slayer techniques and ignites Mr. Cursey with a Lucy hair. The fire appears on Lucy causing no harm to her and granting her the ability to use it at her advantage.[432] (Unnamed)
- Fire Dragon's Iron Fist (Lucy Version): While using Fire Dragon Slayer Doll, Lucy, under Natsu's control, punches her opponent with great force.[433] (Unnamed)
- Secret Attack: Lucy Fire (必殺・ルーシィファイア Hissatsu : Rūshi Faia): While being controlled with Mr. Cursey and after Natsu has ignited her, Happy uses Max Speed to make her whole body catch on fire and accelerate, culminating in an extremely fast fire-enhanced attack on the enemy.[434]
Enhanced Smell: Natsu has a very keen sense of smell. His nose is so sharp that just by being around Kaby he could tell that he was poor, despite the fact that he was using his friends' mansion to try to trick Team Natsu into believing he was rich.[435] He also was able track Ultear despite the distance between them.[436]
Enhanced Hearing: Natsu, according to his own words, possesses good hearing, something which the Grand Magic Games proved true: during Lucy Heartfilia's fight with Flare Corona, in which the latter employed her hair remotely to threaten Asuka Connell, who was cheering from the stands, and thus forced Lucy into submission, Natsu was seemingly the only person managing to hear Asuka's name in the two combatants' low conversation, reacting and protecting the girl from Flare's threat, something which allowed Lucy to continue the battle.[367]
Enhanced Strength: Natsu has shown on numerous occasions to possess a high degree of strength, enough for him to perform a number of physical feats, among which are freely swinging around the mast of a ship as a makeshift weapon,[437] doing the same with a palm he personally broke down bare-handed,[438] shattering a billiard table and cracking most of its balls simply by hitting one of them with the cue,[439] and stopping the gargantuan Dorma Anim's foot, which was going to stomp on him and his fellow Dragon Slayers, all by himself, subsequently throwing the robotic dragon off balance by rapidly pushing it away.[440]
Enhanced Reflexes: Natsu possesses fast reflexes, having been capable of dodging attacks from Erza, Laxus and most recently attacks from Sting that travels at the speed of light.[441]
Enhanced Speed: Natsu's speed and reflexes are impressive, enough for him to close great distances in a blink of an eye and dodge swift attacks.[442]
Immense Durability: Natsu has proven himself to be quite durable. He has managed to take continual, deadly assaults from foes and continue fighting. Such impressive resistance was first shown during his battle with Erigor, in which he received multiple hits by his opponent's bursts of cutting wind and continued fighting.[443] Also, during his fight with Cobra, Natsu displayed a natural resistance against the Oración Seis' member's poison, described as lethal and corrosive. A true testament to his durability is shown when he blocks one of Sting Eucliffe's strongest attacks Holy Nova, with a single hand with no visible damage to himself despite the considerable explosion the attack caused to the surrounding area.[444]
Master Hand to Hand Combatant: Natsu is an extremely proficient unarmed fighter, often using his Dragon Slayer Magic in combination with punches, kicks, and even headbutts to combat his opponents to great effect.[445] Such skill is paired with amazing physical prowess: aside from his strength, Natsu has displayed high degrees of speed, agility and reflexes, enough for him to match melee-specialists of Erza's caliber in battle.
Equipment
Sealed Flame Blade: When Natsu could not employ his Dragon Slayer Magic in Edolas, he fought using an Edolas form of Magic that manifests as a destructive flame blade. However, the blade was depleted after one use due to Natsu's lack of skill with it and his usual excessive nature when he fights.[446]
Igneel's Scarf: It is a scarf given to Natsu by his foster father, Igneel, and Natsu always wears it to remember him.[4] It is a white scarf that has scales on it. It is something similar to a charm that protects Natsu from misfortune. It shielded him against Zeref's Death Magic, but the exposure to the death Magic caused it turn black.[447] During the time it was tainted, Wendy was unable to heal Natsu. In order to heal him, she had to reverse and remove the evil on the scarf.[448]
Relationships
Relationships
|
---|
Main article: Happy Happy is one of Natsu's closest, if not his closest, friend. The two live, eat, and train together[449] and have been inseparable since Happy hatched from his egg in X778 an egg that was found and kept safe from harm by Natsu Dragneel and Lisanna Strauss.[450] Happy usually follows along with all of Natsu's ideas, agreeing to them with his catch phrase, "Aye Sir." They care deeply for each other and will often risk their own safety to help each other. In addition, Happy is extremely loyal to Natsu and will do whatever he says, even if it compromises Natsu's safety. When Happy had to leave Natsu behind to face Lyon while trapped in an ice spell, per Natsu's orders to save Lucy Heartfilia, Happy was brought to tears, but followed Natsu's orders without question.[451] Main article: Lucy Heartfilia Natsu and Lucy share a very close relationship as it was Natsu who had brought Lucy to Fairy Tail during the summer of X784[452] and has described her as a nice person.[453] The two are part of the same team,[454] and are always going on missions together. Also, Natsu, along with his best friend Happy, has a tendency to break into Lucy's house any time of the day, much to her annoyance.[455]Since their initial meeting, the two have come to form a very close relationship. Natsu would always go rescue Lucy whenever she finds herself in trouble. He saved her when she was captured by Bora, and did the same thing when she was kidnapped by Jose Porla and taken prisoner and brutalized by Gajeel Redfox. During their time in Edolas, when he heard that Lucy is about to be executed, he got angry and threatened to kill the guards if they so much as touch her.[456] He is also very supportive of Lucy when she was told of her father's death[457], even bringing her a job to help her pay her rent and to cheer her up.[458] Main article: Erza Scarlet Natsu and his friend Erza Scarlet, also a part of Team Natsu, share a very close bond. When Natsu first introduced Erza, he described her as a scary, omnipotent person, and he also feared her.[459] Natsu greatly admires her strength, determination and courage, and has been eager since long to battle her, to see who's the stronger one. There is a friendly rivalry between those two.[460] Natsu and Erza have been together since their first days in Fairy Tail. They were even described as taking baths together, alongside the other member of their team, Gray Fullbuster.[461] The two of them care deeply for each other, and would protect each other to death. Erza acts as an insulator when Gray and Natsu fight, and Natsu has been noted to start behaving like Happy, saying the Exceed's signature "Aye", when Erza talks to him, due to him being afraid of her in spite of their relationship.[462] Natsu's affection towards Erza was enough for him to disguise himself as her to prevent her from going to prison due to the bulk of damages she inflicted during her missions.[463] When they are put in cell for one day as a result, Erza admits she kind of liked that Natsu came to help her.[464] Natsu admires the strong and dauntless Erza, and he was enraged to see that, due to Jellal, Erza was shredding tears as if she was weak. Seeing this, Natsu knocked Erza unconscious, promising that her nightmare would have been over once she had woken up.[465] With this lionhearted vehemence, Natsu succeeded in defeating Jellal, one of the Ten Wizard Saints, again showing that he would destroy all impediments making Erza desperate.[466] Natsu and Erza are the same when it comes to Fairy Tail, they have really strong feelings for their guildmates. In the Tower of Heaven arc, Natsu told Erza that, even if he does not know much about her past, he is just like her; a world without his friends would be impossible. He also told her never to forsake her life again.[467] Erza also has an enormous trust in Natsu. This is shown when she trusted Natsu to defeat Laxus Dreyar, who is evidently more powerful than both Natsu and Erza, leaving to destroy the Lacrima from the S-Class Mage's Thunder Palace spell. She promised Natsu that she would return alive, not losing the life that Natsu once saved.[468] Main article: Gray Fullbuster Gray Fullbuster is a guild mate as well as a fellow teammate of Natsu. The two share a competitive[469] and, at the same time, very close relationship. Gray is considered Natsu's main rival and the two Mages have fought constantly even since their younger years.[470] Despite the fact that they are constantly fighting with one another, they are extremely close, and have been since they were small. They even showered together along with Erza Scarlet as young children.[471] The two truly care for each other, and would do anything in order to protect each other. During their time on Galuna Island, Natsu stopped Gray from killing himself twice.[472][473] And later, while they were in the Tower of Heaven trying to defeat Jellal Fernandes and his minions, Gray saved Natsu from being devoured by Trinity Raven member Fukuro.[474] Main article: Lisanna Strauss Natsu and Lisanna are childhood friends, who have always been very close to each other. Their friendship started when Natsu was standing lonely in the rain: Lisanna came to tell him to get inside, subsequently stating that she likes dragons and that she finds them amazing. Natsu was very happy to hear that, starting to praise Igneel, and the two of them continued their conversation inside the guild building.[475] Natsu and Lisanna further developed their intimate relationship thanks to Happy: when Happy was still in his egg, Natsu thought that the egg was that of a dragon, and wanted to hatch it at all cost. Lisanna agreed on helping Natsu, and in no time these two became great friends.[476] The two of them proceeded to build an house for the egg. Lisanna said that they were just like a real family; Natsu the daddy, Lisanna the mommy and Happy their child. A shy Natsu replied that wasn't bad. Together in their hut, Natsu and Lisanna happily warmed their beloved egg. Eventually, Lisanna found Natsu very kind and cute, even asking him to be her husband in the future, which she subsequently brushed off saying she was just joking when Natsu blushed. Lisanna kept jokingly teasing Natsu like this every now and then.[477] Following Lisanna's seeming death, Natsu built a grave at the hut where they used to keep Happy's egg, knowing that Lisanna loved to see the sunset.[478] Natsu vowed that he would find Lisanna wherever she was and bring her back. In Edolas, when Natsu saw Lisanna, he bursted into tears of joy, relieved that he finally found her.[479] When Lisanna was back from Edolas, she rushed and hugged Natsu crying and blushing. She was relieved to finally tell Natsu the truth about her being the real Earthland Lisanna that he knew.[480] Main article: Gajeel Redfox Gajeel Redfox was initially introduced as an enemy to Natsu, being the S-Class Mage of the Phantom Lord guild responsible for the destruction of Fairy Tail's building[481] and for the injuries suffered by Team Shadow Gear.[482] During the battle in Phantom Lord's building in Oak Town, an enraged Natsu was shown assaulting Gajeel,[483] and the fight between the two continued in Phantom Lord's transformed building while the guild was attacking Fairy Tail again; a violent confrontation which tired out both Mages, but finished with Natsu's victory.[484] The two exchanged words on their respective Dragon foster fathers after the battle, and, despite not being yet exactly on friendly terms, were shown to relate themselves comedically to one another.[485] Following Gajeel's entrance in Fairy Tail, despite Natsu's initial mistrust,[486] the two of them seem to have developed a bond of comraderie, much like the one Natsu has with Gray Fullbuster: while usually appearing prone to confront each other,[487] something stemming from their similar, combative personalities, Natsu and Gajeel fought as comrades against Laxus Dreyar, with Gajeel saving Natsu's life[488] and then shielding him from one of Laxus' attacks,[489] and joined their forces with Wendy Marvell to take down king Faust's Dorma Anim in Edolas.[490] Main article: Gildarts Clive Natsu and Gildarts' share a friendly relationship. Gildarts is like a mentor to Natsu and Natsu looks up to Gildarts and has since his younger years. Natsu is impressed with Gildarts' immense strength and he constantly challenges Gildarts to battle, much like he does with Erza Scarlet and Laxus Dreyar. And, much like with Erza and Laxus, he is always quickly defeated.[491] Main article: Mirajane Strauss Natsu and Mirajane's current relationship is a friendly one, much like Mirajane's relationship with every other member in the guild. When she was younger, however, Mirajane was very antagonistic towards Natsu. She considered him a member of "Erza's group",[492] as Mirajane called it with contempt, and so she teased him endlessly.[493] Despite this, she's always held a soft spot for him, finding him to be cute when he cries,[494] and generally kept tabs on him in Erza's absence.[citation needed] Main article: Makarov Dreyar Natsu shares a strong relationship with Makarov, the Guild Master of Fairy Tail, as well as the one who introduced him to the guild[495] after he was abandoned by Igneel, his dragon foster father.[496] Just like most of the Mages in the guild, Natsu views Makarov as a fatherly figure, and Makarov, in turn, proudly calls his subordinates his "kids".[497] Makarov is willing to defend Natsu and the other Mages when in trouble, as shown when he fought and defeated Phantom Lord's Master, Jose Porla, in order to protect his beloved "kids".[498] Natsu admires Makarov and acknowledge his great strength.[499] Makarov also thinks that Natsu is a worthy Mage, believing that, with Natsu's enthusiasm, he could defeat opponents way stronger than him.[500] This was shown again when Makarov elected Natsu as one of the eight candidates to become S-Class Mages.[501] When Natsu was brought to the verge of death during his battle with Zancrow, Makarov protected Natsu, being even willing to suffer heavy damage from Zancrow's Flame God Slayer Magic to do so, and berated Zancrow for "hurting his kid before his eyes", subsequently saying that he would have grinded him into nothing.[502] When Tenrou Island was attacked by Acnologia, Makarov protected Natsu and the rest of the Tenrou Team, even risking his own life to allow them to flee Tenrou Island, being willing to give up his life, and being happy that he was acting like a real parent, holding no regrets.[503] Main article: Laxus Dreyar Natsu has known Laxus, one of Fairy Tail's top S-Class Mages as well as Makarov's grandson,[504] for a long time. Initially aloof,[505] Laxus has gradually grown into a both extremely powerful and extremely arrogant individual, whom Natsu would like to fight[506] and defeat, much like he does with Erza.[507] While Natsu is shown to get mad at Laxus when the latter goes on to insult and look down on their fellow guild mates for their presumed "weakness",[508] he also appears to look up to him to a degree, as shown when he blushed after Laxus waved his hand at him,[509] and when he referred to himself as "much weaker" than Laxus,[510] something which he isn't willing to do with most people. Much like the rest of the guild, he also performed a signature hand gesture from Laxus' own childhood in order to bid farewell to the S-Class Mage after the latter was excommunicated due to the events of the Harvest Festival.[511] Main article: Wendy Marvell Two fellow Dragon Slayers, Natsu and Wendy are close friends and guildmates, united by their wish to find their dragon foster parents, Igneel and Grandeeney respectively.[512] Wendy has healed Natsu's injuries several times through the use of her Sky Dragon Slayer Magic, even when she had little Magic left, ignoring Carla's warnings, being willing to put her own health and energy on the line.[513] Also, when Nirvana was destroyed and everyone was brought to safety aside from Natsu, Wendy was shown to be greatly worried; when Natsu eventually showed up, Wendy was relieved and happy, diving into his arms.[514] Main article: Romeo Conbolt When a little Romeo Conbolt went to Fairy Tail to ask its Mages to go and look for his father Macao Conbolt, a veteran Fairy Tail member in his own right, after he hadn't returned from his job on Mt. Hakobe,[515] it was Natsu who set out to search him[516] and brought him back to his son. Ever since that fact, Romeo has started to look up to Natsu, referring to him as "Natsu-nii" ("Brother Natsu").[517] Following the disappearance of Tenrou Island and the 7-years absence of many Fairy Tail members, Romeo started wearing an outfit highly reminiscent of Natsu's own one, out of respect for him.[518] Natsu and the others' return made Romeo cry for joy, and seemingly prompted him to smile again,[519] after seven long years during which the boy didn't raise a single smile.[520]
Main article: Sting Eucliffe Just like Natsu, Sabertooth's Dragon Slayer Sting Eucliffe seems to value his comrades. When the two of them met, Sting revealed that he used to look up to Natsu, but that soon changed when he learnt that, Natsu wasn't able to defeat a dragon (namely Acnologia) despite being a Dragon Slayer himself.[521] In spite of this, he still refers to him with the honorific suffix "-san".[522] Natsu and Sting share a similar perspective when it comes to battles, as they both seem to enjoy exciting confrontations.[523] Main article: Rogue Cheney Natsu and fellow Dragon Slayer Rogue Cheney from the Sabertooth guild haven't had their relationship explained so far. Both Rogue and his teammate Sting Eucliffe seem to have known Natsu for a long time without him knowing, and have been looking up to him for a similarly long time,[524] with him being the reason which made them eager to learn Dragon Slayer Magic. However, Natsu has displayed a certain enmity towards them due to their seeming murder of the Dragon which taught them their longed-for Lost Magic; an action which, to Natsu, sounded like patricide.[525] Main article: Jellal Fernandes At first, Natsu seemed to hold great hatred towards Jellal Fernandes for trying to use Erza Scarlet as a sacrifice for the Tower of Heaven and for his obsession to resurrect the Black Wizard, Zeref.[526] Natsu also disapproved the way Jellal treated his comrades like trash, as seen when Jellal badmouthed Simon's death, calling it foolish and useless, and Natsu showed his anger towards Jellal with power and emotions.[527][528] During the time Jellal was in a death-like state because of Etherion,[529] Natsu continued holding his grudge towards the former Wizard Saint, which is something rare for him; following Jellal's awakening, Natsu was shown impulsively attacking him on sight.[530] When Jellal tried to aid Natsu in his fight against Brain, Natsu initially refused to utilize any help from Jellal and instead attacked him,[531] but he soon stretched out his hand accepts Jellal's help.[532] When Jellal was about to be taken under arrest,[533] Natsu was the first one who spoke out against it, as well as the first who tried to force his way through the Magic Council's soldiers, calling Jellal an ally of his group, and stating that they were taking him back with them.[534]
Main article: Lucy Ashley When Natsu first meets Lucy Ashley, Lucy Heartfilia's Edolas counterpart, she confuses him with his own Edolas counterpart Natsu Dragion and hugs him, relieved that he is finally back, before tormenting him with her comedic torturing techniques.[535] It was only later was she told of Natsu's real identity. Lucy Ashley helps Natsu in getting back his Fairy Tail guildmates by supplying him with weapons[536] and telling Dragion to drop him and his comrades to the Royal City.[537]
Main article: Igneel Igneel is a dragon and Natsu' foster father. He has been shown to be a loving paternal figure towards Natsu, though leaving him to fend for himself leads one to doubt this.[538] Despite this, Igneel is shown to be incredibly protective of Natsu, as he continues to watch over him from afar, even after he had left him. According to Grandeeney, Natsu and Igneel have a tendency to take things to excess. During their stay together, Igneel took the role of a real father for the young boy: he taught Natsu how to write, speak, and use the fire-brand style of Magic known as Dragon Slayer Magic , an ancient form of Lost Magic that gives the user the traits of a dragon. For some unknown reason, Igneel disappeared without saying a word to Natsu on the 7th July of X777.[539] Natsu dreams to be able to meet with Igneel again, and he searches for clues of his whereabouts.[538] Through various of Natsu's battles, Igneel's spirits seems to support and encourage him from afar, like it was shown in the fight against Zero when he told him "I, Igneel, am with you!", allowing Natsu to recover his courage.[540] Main article: Zeref For unknown reasons, the Black Wizard Zeref wants to meet Natsu.[541] When the two of them first met on Tenrou Island, Zeref wept tears of joy, and instantaneously recognized him. Natsu, however, did not reciprocate Zeref's recognition.[542] When Zeref said that he had been expecting Natsu's arrival, Natsu misinterpreted this as a form of challenge and rushed towards him, landing a fierce blow to Zeref's face. Even after this, Zeref was still overjoyed that he was able to meet Natsu, but was pessimistic when he realized that Natsu was still unable to stop him.[543] When Tenrou Island was attacked by Acnologia, Zeref looked down on Fairy Tail's holy ground and his melancholic last words, before he departed, were "Farewell Natsu".[544] |
