Magic Sealing Stones (魔封石 Mafū Seki) are a type of mineral best known for the negation of a Mage’s Magic Power.

Description[]

What the stone looks like exactly in its raw, unprocessed state remains unknown, the ore itself appears to have brownish rocks,[1] although most if not all its byproducts resemble a black metallic color.[2]

The material is highly durable, as when an explosion from Tartaros' Jackal was inefficacious at damaging it, although it demolished the entire Magic Council Headquarters.[3] One would need a great amount physical strength to break the stones apart,[4] even Natsu with all his strength was initially unable to break free from the stones,[5] that is until he eventually tapped into his latent demonic power.[6]

Originally in the anime, the cells adapt a relatively different appearance. Replacing the stones is a transparent, diamond-shaped glass. The cells appear to be smaller and are able to levitate in midair. Regardless, the effects are the same.[7]

Effects on Mages[]

In the manga, true to its name, coming into contact with Magic Sealing Stones negates a Mage’s ability to use their Magic, nullifying their powers. This effect appears to only occur upon direct and constant physical contact with the Mage in question, as the effects stop as soon as the Mage is no longer in contact with the material.[8]

The sealing stones can be modified and forged into items such as handcuffs and shackles, these don’t necessarily inhibit their mobility unless needed, which can impede the person from moving off on their own will while chained to a surface and also nullifying their Magic.[9]

The stones however have no bearings on non-magical abilities, such as Curses, as shown when they were unable to hold Kyôka. Presumably, they would also have no affect on Spirit Arts and Alchemy.[4]

While A Magic user loses their powers while in contact with the sealing stones, said Magic powers can still be used and affect the stones, so long as they themselves aren’t in contact with the substance. Examples shown when Nadal heavily tortures Jellal Fernandes with a Magic beam from his Magic Staff, inflicting damage from outside his cell.[10] Doranbolt used his Teleportation Magic to rapidly enter the Magic restricted cell to hold a knife at a defenseless Cobra's neck.[11] Gômon was able to magically manipulate the sealing stone handcuffs[12] and Gray was able freeze and shatter them.[13]

The Magic Sealing Stones affects Celestial Spirits just as well, but in their case, forces their Gates to close return to their Celestial Spirit World.[14]

Items[]

The stones appear to be sturdy is as such an effective countermeasure against Mages, often used by various organizations including certain Guilds for said use. Therefore has been made into various items to restrict opposing Mages.

Restraints[]

  • Prison Cells: Magic Sealing Stones are used to construct prison cells; utilized to incarcerate Mages: rendering their Magic abilities ineffective when inside as the entirety of the surface is lined with the stones (e.g. Cobra's Hearing Magic), including noteworthy Mages of preeminent Magic Power such as former Magic Councilor Jellal Fernandes and the Dark Guild Oración Seis.[15] The Magic Council’s central prison makes use of these underneath their headquarters.[8] Albeit, prisoners can be easily released by outside forces, such as when Lapointe assists in the Oración Seis' escape with his Personification Magic without the Magic Council noticing.[16]
  • Magic Sealing Stone Cuffs: Special handcuffs to arrest those with Magical abilities. Preventing Mages forced to wear them on their wrists from using their Magic. Mages can still move around on their own unless their legs are also restrained. Theses can appear as either a pair of black alloy cuffs with white bracket marking symbols[2] or a singular silver block restraining both wrists.[17]
  • Magic Sealing Stone Chains: Gômon had a set of chains among his collection of torture tools and devices which he used to bind Virgo. These chains can also be linked onto the sealing cuffs.[18]
  • Magic Sealing Stone Rope: Interestingly, Magic Sealing Stones be made into ropes which the Guild Diabolos used,[19] which can be crafted through the use of Alchemy.[20]
