Midnight (ミッドナイト Middonaito) is a Mage belonging to the Oración Seis guild, a dark guild composed of highly powerful Mages whose goal was to find a power known as Nirvana, a very destructive power that was sealed away long ago.[1] After the rebirth of Oración Seis, he now calls himself Brain II.
Appearance

Midnight has a lean body structure, black spiky hair on the top, and longer, straighter white hair on the bottom. He has a set of five maroon beads on the right strand of his hair. He wears a black leather vest with white fur-like material on the collar and sleeves. He also wears a white armlet around his right bicep, and a black choker around his neck. He wears a pair of yellow trousers with black designs on them, and burgundy boots. There are spiked bracelets on his wrists and skull earrings on his ears. He even masks dark eyeliner, and plum-colored lipstick. His bottom eyelashes stick out as well. Midnight's Oración Seis stamp is red, and is printed on his right shoulder, and he wears dark nail polish.[2]
In X791, Midnight's black spiky hair has grown down to his back, covering his white hair. He has a braid of white hair on the left side of his face. He wears a whole-body white clothing that has a maroon stripe on each leg and a maroon neckline. He wears a black vest, and a light brown coat with white fur-like edges on top.[3]
Personality
Midnight is, most of the time, sleeping on a floating carpet, waiting for orders. He seems to believe that his power is absolute, or, at least, higher than that of anyone else. In battles he is often bored by the weakness of his opponents. His self-confidence, in fact, comes from great skill, but it is not flawless.
He seems to be sadistic; when he finds a strong opponent, he will make them suffer. He is also afraid of his foster father Brain. When he was defeated, he was frightened of Brain abandoning him.
History
Young Midnight in the Tower of Heaven
Not much is known about Midnight's past, except that he was once a slave child working on the Tower of Heaven like the other Oración Seis members, he couldn't sleep because of his terror, as a young boy under Jellal's reign until Brain came and selected him to become a part of his guild with Jellal's permission.[4][5]
Synopsis
Oración Seis arc
Midnight when he was first introduced
In the battle against the alliance (consisting of the Fairy Tail Guild, Blue Pegasus, Lamia Scale Guild and Cait Shelter Guild) he mostly slept on a Magic flying carpet. Natsu Dragneel tries to attack him when he is still asleep but is surprised to see his flame being Magically diverted away from Midnight, whose own power was automatically protecting him. Racer suddenly appears and attacks the Fire Mage, mentioning it would be scary to wake him up.[6] As the Oración Seis split up, Midnight stays with Brain as he has the captured Wendy Marvell revive Jellal. However, Jellal attacks Brain and knocks Midnight off his Magic carpet. Despite all this, Midnight still remained asleep.[7]
However, it wasn't until Brain felt the defeat of Racer that he ordered Midnight to wake up and hunt down the remaining enemies to which Midnight complies to when Nirvana is revealed.[8][9] Midnight is next seen easily defeating Eve Tearm and Ren Akatsuki in separate instances, wondering in each case where all the strong opponents were.[10][11]
Midnight afraid of Brain abandoning him
Midnight later seen confronting Gray Fullbuster, Lucy Heartfilia, Jura Neekis and Hoteye after overhearing their intention to stop Nirvana (which they're currently on). He seems especially irked when Hoteye calls Brain's methods for changing light to dark wrong, attacking the group in an instant. Hoteye manages to save the group before proceeding to fight against Midnight to hold him off while they escape.[12]
Not long after their battle, Midnight was in disbelief to find himself defeated by Hoteye and is afraid that his father will abandon him. He than decides to run behind a building and declares that he will not lose. However, Hoteye's Tengen (Heaven's Eye) found him and used liquid ground to destroy the building that he was in. It shows that he was caught in the attack with heavy injuries.[13]
Midnight dodging Erza's attacks
However, it is revealed that his loss to Hoteye was an illusion, as Midnight is shown to quickly get back up and defeat Hoteye easily. All of his wounds are gone and he states that Magic can't hurt him. It is revealed by Midnight himself that he is the strongest Mage, even surpassing his father.[14] Also, Nirvana is actually under his control, not Brain.[15] He appears right behind Erza Scarlet and Jellal just after the explosion in the Throne Room and stated how nasty it was for his father to take his enjoyment away, and also says that since now they're his last prey they all should have fun. Jellal offered to fight him first and told Erza to stand back.[16] True to his words of being the strongest in the Oración Seis, he defeats Jellal very quickly and moves in for his last victim, Erza (however, the self-destruct spell Jellal casted on himself had severely weakened him, so Jellal may be stronger as he defeated Erza before).[17]
Midnight's Monstrous form (Illusion)
The two then do battle. During their battle, Midnight explains his power to Erza and as he uses it to cause her great pain, and reveals that their first destination is Cait Shelter and also tried to recruit Jellal.[18][19] However, Erza gets back up wearing a new armor, the Robe Of Yuen.[20] Erza slashes at him, but he merely reflects it. However she is able to punch him, sending him flying back. She then reveals his two weaknesses. He starts strangling her with her with armor as she reveals that he cannot reflect human bodies. She then reveals that he cannot reflect things in more than one area, as he looks up to see that Erza has sent several swords flying down into his direction, pinning him into the ground. She then claims his strangling won't work on her as her her armor is an elastic armor, which his Magic won't work on.[21]
Midnight then says that at midnight his Magic reaches its peak and he transforms into a giant monster. He creates a giant explosion and stabs Erza and Jellal. However, Erza slashes him and reveals that Midnight's transformation is only an illusion. As he is defeated, he wonder how he can be defeated as he is supposed to be stronger than his father. He falls down remembering that all he wanted to do was fall into slumber in a quiet place.[22] He was then arrested with the rest of the Oración Seis by Lahar and the Rune Knights.

The Reborn Oración Seis appears
When the Infinity Clock is assembled, the Reborn Oración Seis are warped into the cryptic ruins of which it is located in.[3] Midnight confirms to the present members of Fairy Tail that they are the Reborn Oración Seis. Natsu inquires if he is Midnight; Midnight claims that such name belongs to the distant past and that he is now Brain II. Midnight then states that he intends to carry out his father Brain's will of destroying everything that has a form. He continues that Legion Corps and Fairy Tail have completed their mission. With his guildmates, Midnight carves their Guild's mark upon the Infinity Clock.[23]

Natsu, Dan Straight, and Byro Cracy then charge an attack, but are instantly defeated by Midnight, who confidently claimed that "the maggots are swarming". Right after, Midnight teleports and sits on the Infinity Clock, claiming that the Infinity Clock is their property because its ownership is determined by the wizard who carves his seal on it. Cobra then asks Midnight how much longer must they waste their time there, and Angel adds by reminding them of their grand aim. Midnight states that he hasn't forgotten the humiliation Fairy Tail caused them 7 years ago. He then commands Cobra and Racer to "play with them a bit". When he was satisfied, he commands Angel to finish them off, before then leaving with the rest of his new Guild.[23]
Midnight then reappears with the Reborn Oración Seis and discusses their plan with the Infinity Clock, giving a small but deep speech about it. Afterwards, he enacts their goal and begins attacking multiple churches with his Guild, additionally increasing their notoriety.[24] Midnight appears on the top of the Kardia Cathedral where he looks around.[25] Then he heads underground where he finds the tomb of Will Neville.[26]

Midnight stands in front of Will Neville's grave, trying to undo the spell protecting it. He compliments him for keeping his secret safe for so long, but announces that he will soon be able to open it.
Before he can break the seal, Midnight is confronted by Alzack Connell, who immediately attacks him with various types of guns. However, Midnight uses his Reflector to avoid all the shots and, when the other Mage surrounds him with guns and attempts to attack with all of them at once, Midnight uses his abilities to switch places with his opponent, which results in Alzack getting shot by all the weapons.
Bisca's shot is ineffective against Midnight
After Alzack is defeated, Bisca, who was hiding in order to fully charge her weapon, unleashes a powerful shot towards Midnight. He reflects her attack and sends it towards a statue. After failing to hit him, Bisca is defeated by Midnight, who comments that while her aim is perfect, she lacks the necessary resolve to kill a person. With the two Fairy Tail Mages defeated, Midnight witnesses the Infinity Clock transforming to its true form, due to the rest of Oración Seis achieving to severe all of the Anti-Links.[27]
Later, after having Imitatia capture Lucy, Midnight listens to Klodoa's bragging about the power of the present Reborn Oración Seis Mages. Midnight then states that Lucy will be sacrificed and be forced to enter a chrysalis-like state for a hundred years; thus, the Infinity Clock will finally be theirs. He adds that she will shall be cursed in a similar fashion as those who went through the seven year time skip.[28]

Sensing that Racer has lost to Mirajane, Midnight commands Angel and Cobra to stop the rest of Fairy Tail.[29] After Klodoa mentions Lucy's high amount of Magic, Midnight explains that the Infinity Clock has been sealed away by Celestial Spirit Mages' Magic, and can therefore be controlled only by a Celestial Mage's Magic. He states that with Lucy's Magic, the Infinity Clock will be in tune with their intentions. Later on, Klodoa senses that Lapointe has been defeated, though Midnight states that this doesn't matter, as he was merely a disposable puppet made from his father, Brain's, hair.[30]
Midnight is later seen moving to confront Natsu, Gajeel, Coco and Elfman, with Gajeel stopping to face him and allow the other Fairy Tail Mages to continue onwards. Though Gajeel tries his best, Midnight overpowers him and throws him from the Infinity Clock.[30] Hastily following the other Mages Gajeel allowed through, Midnight arrives back at the chamber where Lucy is held, and moves to engage Natsu, Coco and Elfman. He tells Natsu that it is pointless to struggle because Lucy will soon merge with the Infinity Clock, and then begins persuading Imitatia to defeat the fire Mage, stating that he'll do whatever it takes to make her wishes come true as long as she proves her allegiance.[31]

When Natsu continues to struggle and attempt to free Lucy, Midnight repeats his goal and attacks, stating that he won't let him interfere. He then narrates that when Lucy fully merges with the Infinity Clock her whole existence from the world will be erased. When Imitatia hears and questions this, Midnight reveals that Lucy will simply become a tool for his own malicious plans; Imitatia desperately rushes to Lucy so that she can rescue her, though Midnight stops her with his Darkness Magic, returning her to her true doll form. He states that her role has finished and goes forth to step on the lifeless toy, which triggers Natsu into attacking him once more. Midnight arrogantly tells Natsu to come at him but is unexpectedly hit by Natsu's punch.[31]
Whilst the two exchange blows, Romeo and Elfman move to assist, but Midnight commands Klodoa to take care of them. After battling with Natsu for some time and explaining the reasons behind his heightened Magic abilities, Midnight casts Genesis Zero on Natsu in the name of Zero, seemingly consuming the fire Mage.[32]
Natsu and Midnight continues to fight
Lucy then manages to control the Infinity Clock, casting Real Nightmare on Midnight and causing him to hallucinate about his childhood in the Tower of Heaven. Midnight then realizes that as the sole remaining member of the Reborn Oración Seis, he cannot control the effect of Real Nightmare alone, and is a such being consumed by it. Hearing this, Natsu quickly breaks out of Genesis Zero and flies at Midnight once more. Though Midnight desperately fights and screams about his own power and the sacrifices he made to obtain it, Natsu manages to overpower him, and with one final punch sends Midnight flying down through the Infinity Clock, the dark Mage thinking of his father as he falls.[32]
Magic and Abilities
Midnight using Reflector
Reflector (屈折 Rifurekutā): Midnight's exclusive Magic, which has the ability to reflect, distort and twist all matter of objects,[33] except for living things like humans.[34] Reflector is an extremely powerful Magic which has received praise from the former member of the Ten Wizard Saints, Jellal Fernandes, who, while he was in a weakened state,[35] fell to it,[17] and Midnight's use of it made him the strongest member of Oración Seis, even surpassing his father Brain,[36] and second only to Brain's alternate personality, Zero.[37]
- Distort Blade: By twisting the air, Midnight is capable of generating ethereal slashes which he can send flying at his opponents. Both their size and the numbers of generated blades can be greatly varied, ranging from barrages of small attacks[36] to single, devastating cutting moves which he generates by waving his hands, and which are strong enough to effortlessly slice through solid stone buildings, cleanly bifurcating them.[38] (Unnamed)
- Distort Shield: Midnight's ability to twist everything makes him very hard to hit, as he can freely distort any incoming attack to negate their effects,[39] even turning them against the very same opponents who employed them in the first place.[40] He is capable of reflexively activating this defensive power of him even while asleep, as seen during the first battle between Oración Seis and Light Team, when the burst of flames Natsu Dragneel attacked him with in order to wake him up was directed elsewhere before it could land.[41] (Unnamed)
- Spiral Pain (スパイラルぺイン Supairaru Pein): A powerful spell which Midnight initiates by swiping one of his arms before himself, the index finger stretched, and the others bent, as if he was pointing to something. This prompts the intended target, located some meters away from Midnight himself, to be caught within a vortex of distorted air, which inflicts heavy damage upon them, seemingly striking them with incredible brute force, covering them in bruises and shattering armors as resistant as Erza Scarlet's Heaven's Wheel Armor, who was left in a near-death state after suffering Spiral Pain.[42]
- Illusions: By refracting light, Midnight is capable of generating visual illusions. This peculiar use of his Reflector Magic is the source behind Midnight's codename: during his battle with Erza Scarlet, he used an illusion to make it look like he turned into a massive, powerful monster, who proceeded to brutalize both Erza and the nearby Jellal Fernandes; he resorted to employ such means just as a clock struck midnight, claiming that in such an hour "his refraction gets to its peak". However, being a visual illusion, this spell was ineffective against Erza's artificial eye.[43] (Unnamed)
- Invisibility: Midnight refracts the light around him, becoming invisible and at the same time being shown capable of levitating in midair, appearing and disappearing as though as he was teleporting.[44] (Unnamed)
Dark Rondo
Darkness Magic: A type of Magic that Midnight has learned after seven years after the disbandment of the Oración Seis. According to himself, he sacrificed the future in which he would be reunited with his "father" in order to attain this power. Midnight uses this Magic the same way that Brain did, allowing him to cast dark Magical energy in different forms to attack his targets.[23] Trying to become like his "father" Midnight also learned to use Zero's most powerful darkness spell, Genesis Zero.[32]
- Dark Rondo (常闇回旋曲, ダークロンド, Dāku Rondo): Midnight gathers dark magic and then fires it at an opponent. Midnight's unique strategy with this technique is to employ Reflector to reflect the attack itself, preventing it from being evaded to deflected.[23]
- Dark Capriccio (常闇奇想曲, ダーク・カプリチオ, Dāku Kapurichio): Midnight fires drilling beams of darkness that can pierce through defenses from every direction.[32]
- Genesis Zero (ジェネシス・ゼロ Jeneshisu Zero): Midnight first charges green darkness energy on his hands and summons thousands of black phantoms to strike at his foes to the point of them being engulfed completely by their sheer numbers alone, trapping the foes in the nothingness.[32]
Personification Magic: The Magic that Midnight used to transform Lucy's doll into Imitatia. He was able to give her life with the sole purpose of acquiring the Infinity Clock.[32]
Enhanced Reflexes: While prone to negate any attack directed towards him through the use of his Reflector Magic,[39] Midnight possesses sharp reflexes, high enough for him to dodge a sword which Erza Scarlet threw at him with a calm, slight movement of his head,[45] as well as to emerge with minimal injuries from a downward barrage of blades, dodging most of them.[46]
Expert Hand to Hand Combatant: Midnight appears to have practiced unarmed combat during the seven years which followed the temporary disappearance of Tenrou Island. As the leader of Reborn Oración Seis, he has achieved enough prowess to fight toe-to-toe with a melee specialist the likes of Natsu Dragneel for a certain amount of time. He was shown employing his Darkness Magic to boost the power of punches and kicks in a way reminiscent of how Natsu himself uses his Fire Dragon Slayer Magic, and even managed to perform a takedown on his opponent.[32]
Equipment
Magic Carpet: Since Midnight was usually asleep, he sat on a magic carpet while he napped so that he could tag along with the rest of his guild.[47] This carpet is capable of hovering a few inches off the ground, and automatically follows the guild, and more specifically Brain, nearly anywhere.

Midnight appears as a playable character in the DS Game, Fairy Tail Gekitotsu! Kardia Daiseidou, upon being unlocked.[48] In this game, Midnight possess the following moves:

Trivia
Original concept of Midnight
- Midnight's character design seems to be influenced by Visual Kei, evident by his striking make-up and elaborate clothes.
- It is revealed that Midnight is the strongest of the Oración Seis, and his full power only activates when all the other members are defeated (when their prayers are not fulfilled). However, this is quite debatable now with his father's split personality (Zero) whose immense powers are beyond frightening, and is far more cruel and ruthless.
- Many people were confused by Midnight's gender because of his clothes, hair, and feminine body shape. However, he was later revealed to be a male after "he" and "his" was used in the anime and manga to make it more definite.
- Despite Midnight's calling Brain his father, they are actually not blood-related, as he was once a slave child of the Tower of Heaven.[49]
- Midnight seems to be terrified of the concept of Brain abandoning him if he lost in a battle. He stated that if he lost to Hoteye, his father would abandon him.[50]
