Kirin (キリン Kirin) is a Fifth Generation Dragon Slayer and among the members of Diabolos' elite Dark Dragon Slayer Knights team.[2]
Appearance[]
Kirin is a tall man with yellow hair and green eyes wearing a large coat, top hat, a monocle, and splotched pants, reminiscent of giraffe's pattern. His most notable feature is the large coffin he carries on his back.[2]
Personality[]
Kirin has a sense of humor given his retort to Laxus about his coffin, as well as telling him the contents of it. He also has a sense of pride, given his strength and powers.[2] He is willing to support Selene's goal of creating a world only for humans due to being haunted by the vengeful spirit of Elexion as a child.[2][3]
History[]
With Georg Reizen's rise and infamy as a Dragon Eater in Guiltina, Kirin came to Diabolos in order to become a Dragon Slayer and gain power.[4] 30 years prior to the year X793, a young Kirin devoured the Lightning Dragon King Elexion, after Georg killed him, becoming one with the Yellow Dragon.[1][5] However, the Dragon's heart was taken by Georg to be sold in Ishgar and was processed into a Dragon Lacrima. But this left Kirin being haunted by Elexion, having nightmares and hearing the Dragon call to him. While Wraith sealed the Dragon's soul within a box, later moving it to a coffin, Kirin would continue to be haunted by Elexion.[6]
At some point, Kirin had sparred with Misaki, which according to her was the last person she got serious in a fight.[7]
Synopsis[]
Great Labyrinth arc[]
Gathered with his fellow Dragon Eaters at the entrance of the Great Labyrinth of Dogra, Kirin comments they are going to need something important inside there. He wholeheartedly expresses his support for Selene's goal of defeating the Five Dragon Gods and creating a world of humans.[2]
Within the labyrinth, Kirin confronts Laxus Dreyar after the quick defeat of Skullion Raider and Madmole.[8] He heeds his comrade's warning and reassures them that he will handle this. Placing down the coffin he carries, Kirin muses that Laxus' size would be a problem to fit him and jokingly muses if he should chop him into pieces, before finding it gross. After hearing Laxus' retort, he comments that he is one of a kind before snapping his fingers to fire a small ball of explosive lighting at his enemy. Kirin creates more balls of lightning to attack Laxus with another snap of his fingers before flicking away the latter's lightning attack. He explains that his Magic can compress and distort the atmosphere, striking him again. He casually blocks Laxus' direct punch mid-air and states that no kind of attack can even scratch him, which he slams Laxus into the ground and declares that every one of his opponents go to his coffin. However, Kirin is confused when Laxus gets back up and calls his words a bluff before being struck by lightning from the ground. He retaliates with Atmos Distortion, bleeding Laxus as a result. But he is caught off guard when Laxus pushes through his atmosphere and strike him in the face with Megaton: Red Lightning, getting injured as a result. Standing back up and exerting his magical power, Kirin remarks on his opponent's strength and declares with a smirk that he will have to get a little serious.[9]
Standing triumphantly over an astonished Laxus, Kirin replies to him that it is the power of a Dark Dragon Slayer Knight.[10] When Laxus gets back on his feet, Kirin swings his coffin at him, pushing him back. Placing the coffin at his back, he informs Laxus he was joking about putting him in the coffin and reveals that there is already a soul in there; the soul of king.[11] Suddenly, the labyrinth starts shifting around, Kirin is surprised and comments on it. He tells Laxus that he just barely escaped with his life, calling him "lightning brother", and reminds him that the coffin is already occupied after Laxus jokes about putting him inside it.[12]
Tipping his hat, Kirin wanders around the labyrinth[13] until he encounters Laxus again. He states that it is time to settle the score, brushing off Laxus' concern about the labyrinth collapsing. Kirin declares to Laxus that this is a fight between the strongest from their respective Guilds.[14] Setting down his coffin, Kirin attacks Laxus by swinging it at him and pushes him back. He counters Laxus' Lightning Dragon's Roar with his own breath attack, surprising his enemy. Adjusting his hat, Kirin introduces himself as the Yellow Dragon and explains that all members of Diabolos are Dragon Eaters like him. He replies to Laxus that he ate Elexion the Yellow Dragon who was also known as the "Lightning Dragon King". Raising his hand, Kirin remarks that they were fated to battle one day before striking Laxus with pillars of lightning that injure him. He boasts that his lightning is superior as he is the king and fires another powerful attack of lightning from his finger at Laxus who dodges them.[15]
After Laxus correctly guesses whose soul is inside the coffin, Kirin swings it at Laxus and chides him that it is his right to do whatever he wants with Elexion as the man who devoured the Lightning Dragon King. He smirks when he notices Laxus' realization and asks him if he has figured it out. He explains that there is a Dragon Slayer Lacrima within Laxus and reveals that it is the processed heart of a certain Dragon, Elexion, whom he devoured. He states that the heart and soul are resonating with each other, calling it fate and that Elexion's soul wants his heart back. Charging at Laxus, Kirin boasts that he has become one with Elexion and all that was missing is the heart. He attacks Laxus with a lightning-imbued punch, demanding to give the Lacrima back to him. He glares when Laxus' proclaims to set Elexion's soul free.[16]
Exerting his magical power, Kirin swings the coffin again at Laxus, who dodges it. He then easily blocks the kick mid-air before imbuing his left fist with lighting to rapidly punch Laxus with an instantaneous barrage. Kirin mocks him for thinking he could beat the king. He throws the coffin at Laxus, trapping his opponent inside it. Gleeful, he tells the Elexion to devour Laxus and reclaim the heart so the Lightning Dragon King would be whole again.[17] Spreading his arms at the glowing coffin about to break, Kirin declares that the time has come and compels Elexion's soul to take back what's rightfully his. However, he is shocked when Laxus frees himself from the coffin and had ripped out the Lacrima from his body. Kirin notes that the Lacrima was the source of Laxus' Dragon Slayer Magic and yet he willingly removed it. Kirin is surprised when Laxus claims that he heard Elexion's voice within the coffin and informed him that the Lightning Dragon King was looking for the man who will kill the one who desecrated his body the whole time, terrifying him. Kirin witnesses Laxus consuming Elexion's soul to gain his power before he is then struck down by Laxus' Lightning Dragon King's Red Lightning.[18]
Kirin eventually regains consciousness and he manages to escape from the collapsing labyrinth that was caused by Dogramag's death, exiting with Skullion Raider and Madmole.[19] At the Diabolos guildhall where a peace dinner is held between both Guilds, Kirin is glaring at Laxus who returns the favor. He argues that he couldn't get serious with his power in a cramped up place of a labyrinth, while adding that Misaki can get more serious in a wider space.[20] When Team Natsu notes about God Serena who was seemingly dead yet somehow alive, Kirin mentions Wraith being similar before glaring at Laxus, blaming them for his death.[21]
In the morning, Kirin continues bickering with Laxus as he claims that he didn't lose and he didn't use his 10% of his power. The Yellow Dragon then retorts that he now used 1/10th after Laxus fires back that he used 5% of his power, which Happy points out it's still the same amount.[22]
Gold Owl arc[]
Outside Diabolos guildhall, Kirin is with his fellow Dragon Eaters and Selene where they part ways with the Fairy Tail Mages and search for Athena. When Selene notes about the late Georg Reizen she killed, the Yellow Dragon informs her that Georg may have looked after him but he cannot stand his power harassment. Kirin dares Laxus to bring it on if they ever meet again. He departs with his fellow Diabolos comrades and Selene.[23]

Magic and Abilities[]

- Yellow Dragon's Roar (黄竜の咆哮 Kōryū no Hōkō): Kirin's version of the trademark Dragon Slayer' attack, he generates lightning in his mouth and releases it in a concentrated, destructive blast, capable of destroying everything in a wide area in front of him.[24]
Enhanced Strength: Kirin possesses incredible physical strength, able to swing his large coffin around with great ease.[27]
Immense Durability: Kirin is an incredibly resilient man, as shown when he takes a point-black red lightning imbued attack from Laxus Dreyar, receiving only slight bruises.[28]
Immense Magic Power: As one of Diabolos' strongest Dragon Slayer's, Kirin possesses tremendous levels of magic power which according to Laxus, is comparable to Gildarts Clive.[29] His level of power is equal with his fellow Dark Dragon Slayer Knights[30] and is surpassed by his Guild Master, Georg Reizen.[31]
Equipment[]
Coffin: Kirin carries around a coffin with him at all times.[32] It is large and dark-colored, with an intricate trim around the edges, and a symbol resembling a dragon is engraved on the door. Kirin uses it like a flail, swinging it to attack his target. It contains the soul of the dragon he devoured, Elexion. Due to Elexion's soul resonating with his heart, the Dragon Lacrima within Laxus, contact with the coffin causes Laxus to experience a strange reaction.[33][34]
