Gray Fullbuster to Juvia Lockser in "A Flower Blooms in the Rain"

Gray Fullbuster (グレイ・フルバスター Gurei Furubasutā) is a Mage of the Fairy Tail Guild, wherein he is a member of Team Natsu.[4]

Appearance

Gray 2018

Gray's full body appearance

Gray's most prominent feature is his spiky black-colored hair. He has dark blue eyes, and his body is toned and muscular.[5]

After the mission on Galuna Island, he gets a scar on his forehead above his left eye that is partially covered by his hair.[6] He also has a cross-shaped scar on his lower abdomen received from using Seven Slice Dance: Blood Version on Tenrou Island.[7] His member stamp is below his collarbone on his right pectoral muscle and is dark blue in color.[8]

Unlike almost all other characters, Gray does not consistently wear the same type of clothes (that is, when he is wearing some), though he is often shown wearing some kind of white coat.[9]

Still, his most consistent pieces of clothing are his necklace, which resembles a sword with a stone in it, a metal bracelet and a chain which is attached to the belt loops on the right side of his pants.[10] After obtaining Ice Devil Slayer Magic from his father, he gains a tattoo symbolizing the Magic on his right arm. Following his entry into the Avatar cult, he has seemingly erased his Fairy Tail mark, replacing it with Avatar's mark, but it turned out to be only an overlay on his black marks.[11][12]

Personality

Gray has a laid-back personality, but will get serious when the time calls for it.[13] He and Natsu have a friendly rivalry, and while they can often be seen fighting one another verbally or physically,[14] the two are actually quite concerned about each other.[15][16] Gray was quite obstinate and reckless when he was younger,[17] but over time, he has attained a more cautious attitude towards life, and deals with problems carefully. He is very concerned about his comrades and is truly loyal towards his guild, but tends to trash talk every now and then.[18][19] Also, he has a disturbing habit of unconsciously removing his clothes (including underwear) at inappropriate moments.[20][21] Also, Gray is quite skilled in acting as an evil person, as shown in year X792, when he infiltrated Avatar on Erza's request, something that manages to prompt Briar to remark Gray's desire for "revenge" against E.N.D. has stained both his soul and skin.[22]

Magic and Abilities

Ice Make Magic

Gray's Ice-Make

Ice-Make (氷の造形魔法, アイスメイク Aisu Meiku): A form of Molding Magic that allows the user to create ice at his will and to shape it into objects. In Gray's case, he uses Static Ice-Make, meaning he can shape his ice into inanimate things or weapons. Ice-Make is known as an extremely versatile form of Magic, coming in useful both in battle, for offensive and defensive purposes, and outside of it. Specializing in it and having been practicing it for years, Gray possesses extreme mastery over it, being capable of creating countless amounts of objects for a multitude of uses. Also, according to him, Ice-Make allows the user to produce virtually anything, granting the user an unmatched creation capability.[23][24] As an Ice-Make user, Gray is an individual resistant to cold and as such is able to take damage from ice and snow-based attacks without sustaining major injury and is either completely immune to snow based attacks such as Eve Tearm's Snow Magic or is more resilient to it than other people.[25] Gray’s skill with this Magic is further shown as he’s able to mold foreign ice of other Mages, channeling through his body for his own offensive advantages,[26] as well as reshape another’s ice for his own constructs.[27] Even early on, Gray is capable of freezing fire comparable to Natsu’s.[28] Gray can also freeze and reshaped Juvia, a Water Magic user while in her liquid form into various Ice-Make creations.[29]

  • Ice-Make: Lance (槍騎兵(ランス) Ransu): Gray extends his arms forward, creating long, curved ice lances that he shoots toward his enemy, impaling them. This makes for a powerful ranged attack.[30]

  • Ice-Make: Wall ((ウォール) Wōru): Gray uses one hand to create a small[32] or a large wall of ice in front of him that shields everything behind it.[33]
  • Ice-Make: Rampart (城壁(ランパード) Ranpādo): Gray creates an extremely massive and high wall out of ice, which can stop his opponents in their tracks, but uses up a lot of Magic. The first time Gray used this was to stop Racer.[34]
Ice Shield

Ice-Make: Shield

  • Ice-Make: Shield ((シールド) Shīrudo): Gray creates a large shield made of ice in front of him, whose shape is vaguely reminiscent of a flower, which shields everything behind it.[35] Originally, Gray's shield was identical in appearance to Ur's. When fighting Rufus, however, it took a new unique shape, reminiscent of both Ur's and Lyon's shield.[36]

  • Ice-Make: Arrows: Gray creates one or more arrows out of ice, which are subsequently shot at high speed to enemies through the use of an ice bow.[42] (Unnamed)
  • Ice-Make: Super Freeze Arrow: Using Ice-Make: Ice Geyser and standing on top of the resulting ice formation, Gray can rise up to a high point to shoot his arrow; after the shot, the speed of the arrow increases with gravity and air pressure, making this attack much deadlier than usual.[43]
  • Ice-Make: Battle Axe (戦斧(バトルアックス) Batoru Akkusu): Gray creates an axe out of ice for melee combat and swings it around him. The first time he used this was against Juvia, but it was ineffective.[44]

  • Ice-Make: Cold Excalibur (氷聖剣(コールドエクスカリバー) Cōrudo Ekusukaribā): Gray creates a massive great-sword out of ice for melee combat. As with its smaller version, the weapon is very strong and sharp; in addition, its slashes seem capable of leaving behind large wakes of ice which can damage the opponents.[46]
  • Ice-Make: Ice Bringer (氷魔剣(アイスブリンガー) Aisu Buringā): Gray generates two swords of ice in his hands and rapidly moves them forward in an X motion to slash his opponent.[47]
  • Tenrou Style: Camellia (天狼流山茶花(てんろうりゅうさざんか) Tenrōryū: Sazanka): Gray creates a sheathed sword made of ice then unsheathes it in a quick strike, attacking his opponent as the ice and snow takes the form of camellia petals and fully encasing the target in ice before returning the sword to it scabbard.[48] Gray mimic this technique from an illusionary copy of Hien.[49]
  • Ice-Make: Ice Geyser (氷欠泉(アイスゲイザー) Aisu Geizā): Freezing the ground in front of him, Gray creates a tower of ice spikes that impales opponents, greatly damaging them. The first time Gray used this was to attack Lyon, but he failed.[50]

  • Ice-Make: Clone: Gray creates a copy of himself made out of ice. The copy is perfectly identical to him, being revealed as made of ice only after a close, careful inspection, and thus coming in useful to avoid enemy attacks or to create a distraction for Gray to attack on his own.[53] Gray has shown the capability to form at least two copies at a time.[54] (Unnamed)
  • Ice Blade: Seven Slice Dance (氷刃・七連舞 Hyōjin: Nanarenbu): After creating ice blades jutting back from both of his forearms, Gray displays his swordsmanship by rapidly slashing his enemy seven times. This is often used as a finishing move, causing heavy damage to the enemy.[55]
  • Ice-Make: Fireworks: Gray is able to shot small beams of ice from his hands, forming ice fireworks that looks like snowflakes in the sky.[56]
  • Ice-Make: Stairs: Gray makes stairs out of ice, so that he can get to previously unreachable places. The stairs, despite the nature of the material composing them, don't seem to be slippy at all. The first time Gray used this was to find Lyon. (Unnamed)[57]

  • Ice-Make: Cocoon: Gray surrounds his body with a cocoon of ice, which has spikes jutting outwards, to protect himself from enemy attacks. It has a similar purpose to Ice-Make: Shield, but protecting Gray on every side instead of one. It's unknown, though, if this spell is durable like its standard counterpart.[67] (Unnamed)
  • Ice-Make: Ocean: Gray, after joining both of his hands, slams them on a large body of water, completely freezing it in few seconds.[69]

Gray casting Iced Shell

Gray casting Iced Shell

Ice Magic (氷の魔法 Kōri no Mahō): Ice Magic allows the user to manipulate or create the element of ice. An inherent property of this magic, Gray is capable of freezing objects he comes into contact with instantly. Gray, with his great mastery of ice spells, has proven himself capable of freezing even burning things such as Juvia's boiling water and Fukuro's flames, as well as to freeze an object faster than Sugarboy's Rosa Espada could soften it.[83][84][85]

  • Iced Shell (絶対氷結(アイスドシェル) Aisudo Sheru): Gray also has knowledge of this forbidden, extremely dangerous and powerful spell, and has expressed the certainty that he could use it, if he were forced to. After forming a crossing arm stance, the spell is capable of freezing a target in nearly indestructible ice to freeze and seal a target at the cost of his own life by converting his body into the ice.[86] Even without completely casting it, this spell still emits a freezing aura, enough for Gray trick others to think he intends on using it.[87]
  • Lost Iced Shell (消失絶対氷結(ロスト・アイスドシェル) Rosuto Aisudo Sheru): A variation on the original Iced Shell that Gray created by applying a "Lost Attribute" (消失(ロスト)属性 Rosuto Zokusei) which he discovered during his time undercover within Avatar. Like the original, Gray initiates this spell by forming the same stance which will then create a larger amount of Magical power to surround him that freezes the vicinity. It not only ends the user's life, the Lost Attribute also converts his very existence and memories of him into magic power, causing everyone to forget him in exchange for greater power.[88] Gray nearly implemented it before being stopped by Natsu from activating it.[89]
Gray's new freezing power

Gray's Instantaneous Freeze

Ice Devil Slayer Magic (氷の滅悪魔法 Kōri no Metsuaku Mahō): A form of Devil Slayer Magic that Gray can manifest at will[90] which allows him to produce, manipulate and control the element of ice.[91] Like other Slayers, Gray is able to consume external sources of ice in order to replenish his strength and enhance his power while at the same time granting immunity to it.[92] This form of Magic is extremely powerful and effective against Demons.[93] Gray was given his father's Magic following his defeat and departure.[94] To some degree, Devil Slayers have the ability to resist the effects of Curses (or at least the "Ultimate Curse" Memento Mori).[95] as well as exorcise anything demonic.[96] Gray’s eyes are also able to scan a Demon’s anatomy and any cursed related power, learning all he needs to know.[97] He has become proficient enough in this Magic to be able to encase an enemy in a spiked cocoon of ice, roll him across a field of enemies and manipulate it into an immense burst of ice in a matter of seconds.[98] Gray also can use this Magic to boost the power of his Ice-Make.[99] One of the most effective aspects of this type of Magic is its ability to completely freeze everything within a large radius with a mere flick of the wrist.[100] In one instance, Gray, who recently inherited his father Silver's Magic, was able to completely freeze multiple twisters from Tempester who was in his Etherious Form.[101] In year X792 after training, Gray is able to freeze people solid, as shown when he froze Gômon, before he could harm Lucy.[102]

  • Ice Devil's Rage (氷魔の激昂 Hyōma no Gekikō): Gray releases a large beam of cold air, ice and snow from his mouth, directing it towards his target. The girth of the beam easily dwarfed Mard Geer, but the power of Gray's spell is unknown as Mard was able to dodge it easily.[103]
  • Ice Devil's Zeroth Long Sword (氷魔(ゼ口)太刀(タチ) Hyōma Zero no Tachi): Gray creates a ethereal long sword from his palms that he uses to slash at his opponent(s) with, inflicting a deep cut into his opponent's body severely damaging them and having the added effect of freezing his target(s) solid. Gray was shown using this spell which was shown to be powerful enough to defeat the Etherious and Nine Demon Gates member Tempester in his Etherious Form with a single strike.[93]
  • Ice Devil's Zeroth Destruction Bow (氷魔(ゼ口)破弓(ハキュウ) Hyōma Zero no Hakyū): Gray creates an intricate bow made of ice and fires an arrow from it at high speeds. When the arrow makes contact, it turns into a spiky array of ice that heavily damages the target's body. The spell was shown to greatly damage the pseudo-leader of Tartaros: Mard Geer Tartaros.[104]
  • Ice Devil's Zeroth Destruction Fist (氷魔・(ゼロ)破拳(ハケン) Hyōma Zero no Haken): Gray, after using his Ice-Make to mold and shape the ice from Invel's True-Ice Kamui, creates a pair of destructively powerful gauntlets with the same properties as the aforementioned spell, and uses them to brutalize his target.[105]
  • I Will Stop You (オレが止めてやる Ore ga Tomete Yaru): Gray creates a circular barrier of ice, followed up with an ice shard attack in the middle of it.[107]
Gray and Juvia's Unison Raid

Unison Raid

Unison Raid (合体魔法(ユニゾンレイド) Yunizon Reido): Gray is capable of using this ability, although he has only performed it alongside Juvia till now.

  • Water & Ice-Make Spell: Gray and Juvia were able to fuse their Magic together, causing massive amounts of water and ice needles to erupt all over Magnolia Town, instantaneously destroying Daphne's Lizardmen.[15]
  • Shotgun (ショットガン Shotto Gan): Gray utilizes water provided by Juvia in conjunction with his Ice-Make Magic to solidify the water, which is then aimed at the target and released as sharp, thick spears of ice.[108]
  • Water Nebula & Ice-Make: Ice Geyser (水流昇霞(ウォーターネブラ)氷欠泉(アイスゲイザー) Wōtā Nebura + Aisu Geizā): Juvia and Gray hold hands and combine Juvia's Water spell and Gray's Ice-Make spell to attack their targets.[109]
  • Ice Wave (氷結海嘯(アイス ウエーブ) Aisu Uēbu): Gray utilizes water provided by Juvia in conjunction with his Ice-Make Magic to solidify the water, creating a large wave of sharp ice spikes, hitting his target and freezing them in the process.[110]
Gray begins the battle

Gray’s half Demon form

Demonization: It has been suggested that Devil Slayer Magic is a very fickle Magic, and that learning it too quickly and making use of its properties in rapid succession have had adverse effects on Gray, causing him to become afflicted with black markings that have thus far spread across half of his body on two occasions, causing partial demonic transformation.[111] Nevertheless, Gray himself said that with some help of Porlyusica, was able to gain control over it.[112]

  • Enhanced Strength while covered in the black markings, Gray’s physical strength is greatly heightened, going toe-to-toe with Natsu as E.N.D., as their fist clashing caused massive shockwaves.[113] Gray was also able to take out the Thunder God Tribe single-handedly.[114]
  • Enhanced Speed During his fight with the Thunder God Tribe, Gray display impressive speed, moving more than fast enough than the trio could react, seemingly vanishing from one place to another.[114]

Keen Intellect: Gray has proven to be very intelligent, being creative enough to formulate tactical ideas and plans to gain the upper hand on most his opponents. As part of utilizing his signature magic, Gray’s imagination is his greatest weapon, crafting ice for any scenario.[115] Being the only one to figured out how to overcome Ultear’s Time Magic by using his frozen blood.[116] While chasing Sugarboy who could soften all of his ice, which Gray used to his advantage to cause Sugerboy to slip and slam into a pillar, effectively catching up to him.[117] Gray managed to get the upper hand on Rufus by forming an overly detailed spell that was too much for the memory maker’s mind to keep up.[71] Despite being weakened by Doriate, Gray managed to still gain the advantage by being creative enough in tricking him into traps, as well as figure out he was just minion and not the culprit responsible for freeing the village.[118] When realising the Doriate was harm by the ice covering the village, Gray molded and transferred the energy in the ice through his body to the Demon to defeat him.[119] When battling Silver, knowing his magic had no effect on him, Gray crafted cannons loaded with debris rubble to finally hit some damage.[74] After a year of training, Gray combined aspects of both his ice magics for better effective use in combat.[77]

Expert Weapons Specialist: Gray has displayed considerably great ability in wielding the weapons produced by his Ice-Make spells. He is very skilled in swordsmanship with his constructed ice swords of various forms and sizes, and is also more than capable of wielding other types of bladed weapons. He has also shown to be adept at marksmanship, using his ice bow to shoot arrows from great distances with pinpoint accuracy.[45]

Expert Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Gray possesses great skill in hand-to-hand combat, first seriously shown when, despite his grievous wounds, he managed to overwhelm Lyon when the latter angered him in battle,[120] and generally displayed in a comical way during his scuffles with Natsu. He is capable of packing powerful punches and kicks, and he often employs unarmed combat in conjunction with his Ice-Make spells to gain the upper hand in battle. Gray was able to defeat the Thunder God Tribe in an unarmed combat on his own.[114]

Immense Magic Power: Even early on, Gray possessed an amazing amount Magic power, capable of freezing the rain around him as a side effect of casting his spells.[121] Gray has enough power to manifest massive ice constructs,[63] which showcases the level of magic required to cast.[122] Even shown freezing large areas including toxic particles in the air.[123] In X792, Gray has shown enough power to quickly freeze a whole giant golem in ice.[78] As of X793, Gray can construct several massive iced soldiers, such as 5 large heavily armored knights along with another 5 medium sized ones.[80]

Cold Resistance: Having trained in a cold climate, Gray isn't bothered by the cold as it was necessary for learning his Ice-Make Magic.[124]

Immense Durability: Gray has also displayed tremendous durability during battle. He managed to continue fighting after being hit by boiling water,[125] he survived Fukuro's stolen fire attacks, and endured several dozen energy blasts from Bickslow's dolls before passing out.[126][127] He also took the blasts from four lightning Lacrima from the Thunder Palace, despite having just recovered from previous injuries.[128] Gray withstood fire and lightning based attacks from Rufus Lore, running through the flames with ease while claiming Natsu’s fire was far hotter.[129][130]

Immense Agility: Gray has shown on different occasions to be very fast and agile. During his fight with Bickslow in an alleyway, he displayed enough acrobatic prowess and strength to move several meters in the air by jumping from one wall to the other. He was also able to avoid some of Racer's attacks despite his overwhelming speed.[131] Gray was able to defeat the Thunder God Tribe in quick succession and be fast enough to move behind Bickslow and Evergreen before being noticed.[132]

Immense Strength: Gray has proven himself to possess considerable physical strength, having been shown capable of lifting an enormous amount of large wood beams all by himself, despite subsequently being crushed under them due to distraction.[133] He was also able to lift Lucy while both of them were stuck in a quicksand-like trap and to throw her away several meters up in the air,[134] as well as to shatter the section of a stone wall with a single punch sideways.[135] Gray alongside Natsu were able to demolish a massive wooden beam fired at them with just a barrage of their bare fists.[136]

Immense Endurance: Gray was able to endure being stabbed by Lyon through his torso and continue fighting with said open wound.[137][138] Gray also took several direct hits from Ultear’s floating orb attack him at incredible speeds. Even then, Gray willingly wounded himself to uses his blood to bypass her Time Magic.[116] Even as he got hit by her iced thorn roses, Gray continued to fight her and achieve victory.[139] Gray endured taking on several direct hits from Silver throughout their whole, all while most of his Ice-Make attacks had no effect on the Ice Devil Slayer, gaining bleeding injuries in the process yet still stood claiming not to give up.[140][141] Gray also withstood having his head continuously scrapped across a long surface by Mard Geer,[142] yet managed to break his hold and strike the Demon.[143] Gray has also shown a great amount of endurance when Fried casted Dark Écriture: Pain, a spell that normally causes great agony onto a target,[144] but Gray withstood it with little reaction while continuing fighting.[145]

Immense Speed: Gray has shown impressive natural speed, being able to evade three archers firing at him all while having enough time to remove his clothes and running straight towards them and quickly knocking them out without Magic.[62]

Expert Infiltrater: For almost 6 months, Gray has been an undercover spy for Erza and Jellal to investigate the inner workings of the Black Magic cult guild; Avatar, until he learned of their purification plan to murder countless people. Gray also hoped to find any info on the Book of E.N.D.. For the entire time.[146][147] For of most of this time, Gray had raised to the ranks, while the guild still had their suspicions of him due to those close to him having died in Zeref related incidents, but was able to subside it by revealing his intentions towards E.N.D..[148] Gray was so dedicated to his role that he had to fight his old guild mates and denounce his Fairy Tail and everyone in front of the cultists, even if it meant imprisoning them.[149]

Former Magic and Abilities

Water-Make Hammer

Gray's Water-Make

Water-Make (水造形(ウォーターメイク) Wōtā Meiku): When Gray swapped bodies with Juvia due to the effects of Love Bond, Gray temporarily gained her water molding abilities, forming and shaping water into weapon he thinks of. Gray quickly got the hang of it due to the water element being close to ice,[150] but the lack of solidity proved difficulty for some spells that require to make blunt weapons. Most of the spells Gray forms are water versions of his Ice-Make Magic.[151]

  • Water-Make: Lance (槍騎兵(ランス) Ransu): A water version of his Lance spell. Gray fires from his palms a barrage of sharp lances made of water.[152]
  • Water-Make: Hammer (大槌兵(ハンマー) Hanmā): Gray forms a massive hammer made of water above a target to crush them with. But the hammer wasn’t solid enough to cause any significant damage, instead just doses the target with a large mass of water.[153]
  • Water-Make: Battle Axe (戦斧(バトルアックス) Batoru Akkusu): Gray molds a large axe from water from his hands and sends sit at his target with a swing of his arm.[154]
  • Water-Make: Gungnir (戦神槍(グングニル) Gunguniru): Gray manifests and traps his opponent inside the tip of a gigantic lance made of water and launches it upwards from below the target.[155]

Fire Dragon Slayer Magic (炎の滅竜魔法 Honō no Metsuryū Mahō): Upon swapping bodies with Natsu via Rival Bond, Gray began to perform Fire Dragon Slayer Magic, however he was put off by the heat and so stopped.[156]

  • Fire Dragon's Iron Fist (火竜の鉄拳 Karyū no Tekken): Gray prepares a flaming punch and throws it at the opponent. He stopped before completing this spell due to its temperature.[156]
Fire-Make Fire Hammer

Gray's Fire-Make

  • Fire-Make: Flame Hammer (フレイムハンマー Fureimu Hanmā): Gray forms a massive hammer made of fire above a target and slams it onto them. The resulting impact causes a big explosion while burning the aforementioned target.[157]

Equipment

Earring Communications Lacrima: During an infiltration mission on Stella, Gray and some of his teammates wore a pair of earpieces that would allow them to speak with each other via audio communication with those who have the same accessory. The item appears as an earring with a blue Lacrima dangling from a small chain.[62]

Miniature Communication Lacrima (小型通信魔水晶(ラクリマ) Kogata Tsūshin Rakurima)[158]: Gray used this device to communicate with Erza while doing an undercover mission.[159]

Former Equipment

Red Shoes: Gray was forced to wear these in order for him to participate in a dance battle with Cancer.[160]

  • Gray stated that ever since he first bore the mark of Fairy Tail, he had never lost to the same opponent twice.[169]
  • The necklace Gray wears was supposed to be Rave, but after bouncing around the idea of Gray being the 10th Rave Master among others, Mashima eventually rejected the idea.[170]
  • Gray was originally planned to become the Ice Dragon Slayer, but it was ultimately rejected. Around the Tenrou Island arc, Mashima toyed with the idea again before finally settling on Gray becoming the Ice Devil Slayer just before he started writing the Grand Magic Games.[171]
