Ethernano (エーテルナノ Ēterunano) is the term coined to name particles of Magic.
Description[]
Ethernano dwells inside all living organisms, throughout the atmosphere and the whole planet; Earth Land as well as in other known alternate worlds and dimensions. Nobody knows how Ethernano originated, but this energy naturally exists flowing through the environment, permeating through the whole world. Humans and other magical beings harness it to utilize Magic, as Ethernano is the source of Magic Power (魔力 Maryoku) for all Mages to cast spells.[1][2] Other celestial bodies, such as the Moon, also contain Ethernano.[3] Edea (イデア Idea) is a unit of measurement to quantify the levels of Ethernano.[4]
Over the centuries, the density of Ethernano in the environment increases gradually, especially in the last 400 years.[5]
Moreover, Magic Power can also be used as materials by Alchemists to mold objects, such as using it to create certain tools and weapons.[6]
Magic[]
Precht absorbing Ethernano while meditating.
Magic is the refinement and application of Magic Power to perform a specific function or spell. To obtain Ethernano, the Mages in training must undergo intense meditation as the most effective means of absorbing it is from the air around them. Training their own Nervous System and Wisdom for Magic, thus becoming a become a vessel for Magic Power. Every Mage has a "container" inside their body where the Ethernano is stored that determines the limits of their Magic Power. Every time a Mage casts a spell, the amount of Ethernano within lessens, that is until Ethernano will automatically come from the atmosphere and enters the Mage's body and after a while, restoring their Magic Power. The amount and size varies between individuals, one can expand their through further meditation training.[7][8]

However, recent studies have identified another part of the Mages' Magic "container" that isn't normally used, and contains their dormant power called the Second Origin (二番原 Sekando Orijin). If the power within this second container is released, then the Mage will receive an enormous boost in Magic Power, able to cast more powerful spells, as well as gaining increased magical stamina.[9] The Mages also can wait until the right moment to unleash the Magic Power of their Second Origin in order to gain an advantage in the battle.[10]
Ethernano can be transferred from one Mage to another, typically through physical contact under normal means, thus increasing the receiver’s Magic Power and output of their spells. The more Magic Power is put into a spell, the stronger and more effective it becomes.[11]
Effects[]

When someone uses up all their Magic Power, it could cause them severe exhaustion and potentially render them unconscious until they replenish their power.[9] Magic Power is tied to a person's life-force; near or complete depletion of it can risk the host's life, therefore if the amount of Ethernano within living beings be nearly gone, they are subjected to Magic Deficiency Disease, where they suffer great pain and potentially death unless properly treated.[12]
While Ethernano is the most common power source throughout the world, and essential to use Magic, it can be dangerous if not handle properly as it acts similar to radiation, where there is a safe limit of it that beings can handle before experiencing adverse side effects. As such, living organisms cannot live in areas of extremely concentrated Ethernano, as it apparently has detrimental effects upon the structure of the body.[13] An untrained Human who gains too much Ethernano into their bodies will cause them to go ill with a high fever and must seek some form of medical attention.[14]
Years of overexerting their Magic Power causes the body to develop a malignant mass in the form of an Anti-Ethernano Tumor.[15]
In nature, the density of Ethernano can differ from place to place. In areas on Earth Land with a naturally high enough yet safe concentrations of Ethernano can have unique effects on the environment, they can coalesce together crystals big enough to be visible, all while pouring down in a similar manner to snow and treated as such even on a clear sunny day.[16]
Edolas: The unique environment in a world with little Ethernano.
The quantity of Ethernano varies between alternate worlds, either having too little or an over abundance of Ethernano, both present their own difficulties. While also having unique environments due to Ethernano, such as Edolas having floating islands and streams of river across the air throughout the world.[17][18]
Negation[]
There does exist certain substances that renders the usage of Ethernano ineffective when in the presence of any Anti-Magic effects. Maginium is known Magic repellent material, making it virtually indestructible against Magic.[19][20]
A more common substance are Magic Sealing Stones that prevents a Mage from using their Magic, typically fashioned into tools made to restrain Mages such as cuffs and prison cells.[21]
There are also various kinds of Nullification Magic and that negates the use of Magic and disperses the spells casted back into Ethernano.[22]
Anti-Ethernano[]
A Mage suffering from Magic Deficiency Disease by Magical Barrier Particles.
In more fatal cases such as Magical Barrier Particles, also known as Anti-Ethernano, can quickly deprive those of Ethernano by feeding on it and contaminating it, thus causing anyone submerged in it to be poisoned and weakening their Magic Power.[23] This can be lethal even in small quantities and to those who don't wield any Magic, thus causing a much more severe case of Magic Deficiency Disease and more difficult to treat.[24]
Magic Attributes[]
Unlike Ethernano that exists in nature, the Magic Power that is situated within Mages has a specific nature to it when it's expelled as a form of Magic spell, as it's converted into various attributes depending on what Magic they've learned. This Ethernano can vary to all sorts of different elements and power, such as fire. If a Dragon Slayer's element mixes with highly-concentrated Ethernano, the Dragon Slayer can eat it to achieve their Dragon Force.[25] Magic Power expelled from a Mage also has a unique signature exclusive to that individual similar to a finger print.[26]
Magical Items[]
Lacrima, a Magic Item.
Ethernano can also be harnessed into special Magic Items, objects infused with Magic in order to perform specific functions. These items are typically powered by applying the Mage's power in their bodies as fuel to activate their effects.[27]
Lacrima[]
Ethernano can be solidified into a substance known as Lacrima, a form of crystalized material with varying magical capabilities depending on its usage.[28] Lacrimas are sometimes made into a Magic Items or implanted into them while acting as a battery without relying on the user’s own internal power.[29][30]
