Erza Scarlet (エルザ・スカーレット Eruza Sukāretto) is an S-Class Mage of Fairy Tail who is famous for her usage of Requip Magic. She is also a member of Team Natsu, as well as one of the main female protagonists of the series.[3]
Appearance
Erza is a young woman who has long, scarlet hair and brown eyes. She also has an artificial right eye made by Porlyusica, which replaced the one she lost as a child. She has a slender figure that Lucy describes as amazing, and like most females in the series, she has large breasts. Her most common attire consists of a custom-made armor by Heart Kreuz smiths, a blue skirt, and black boots. Her Fairy Tail stamp is blue and located on the middle of her left upper arm. Erza's specialty in Requip Magic, allows her to requip not only armor, but different outfits as well, allowing her to change her attire at any given time.
Personality
Erza is a very strict person, often criticizing the bad behavior and habits of the other guild members, causing most of them to apologize, fearing that they might invoke her wrath.[4] She is also very impatient, disliking people who don't answer her questions quickly enough. This, coupled with her own tragic childhood, caused many of her guildmates to avoid her due to her social awkwardness.[5] However, she has a great sense of justice and pride in being a member of Fairy Tail.[6]
According to Lucy in the letter she wrote for her mother Erza is "cool and beautiful, warm and full of passion", while to Erza Knightwalker she stated that Erza is strong, cool and a little scary but relied on by everyone, even so she can be really girly and liked sweet things and cute clothes.[7] Jellal, when he had lost his memories, remembering nothing but the name "Erza", said her name was "full of kindness, brightness and warmth".[8]
Erza describes herself as someone who was always crying, since she wasn't able to protect those dear to her. Several examples are when Rob tried to shield her from destruction, and when Jellal was captured because he saved her and was brainwashed by "Zeref".[9] Also, Erza has stated that she feels uncomfortable and insecure when she's not wearing armor.[10] However, when Erza encounters Ikaruga, she overcomes her fear and defeats her without her armor.[9]
Despite her reserved personality and mostly dressing in her conservative Heart Kreuz armor, Erza has shown to have very little modesty and an unusual view on the concept in general. Many of her armors are skimpy, revealing and feminine, and when out of armor she has an affinity for sexy and revealing clothing.[11][12] Finally, Erza seems to have no problem with men (or at least her male guildmates) seeing her naked. She felt no discomfort stating her desire to shower with Natsu and Gray or the fact that she used to shower with them when they were younger.[13] When they were at the hot spring, when she learned that the boys may have been peeping on her and the other girls, she wanted to invite them to bath with them, much to Wendy's shock and Lucy's strong objection.[14] Lucy has also stated that Erza has a habit of climbing into her bed in their shared room during the Grand Magic Games.[15]
It was shown that Erza can't hold her liquor. While drunk, she acts very aggressive towards others, this is shown by her behavior towards her guildmates. She also seems to have a problem recognizing people while being drunk.[16]
As mention by Levy, Erza has a secret fondness for smut and erotic novels.[17]
History
Erza grew up in Rosemary Village, the same place where Kagura and Simon lived as children. When Rosemary Village was attacked by a Zeref-following cult, Erza managed to save Kagura from capture by hiding her inside a crate, but got caught herself as a result.[18] She was enslaved by the cult and forced to build the Tower of Heaven, a structure developed for the purpose of resurrecting the Dark Mage, Zeref.[19] She was imprisoned together with several other slaves, most of them were children. Among these children were Jellal Fernandes, Shô, Simon, Wally Buchanan, and Millianna. While they were asking each other for their names, she said that her name was just "Erza", so Jellal decided to give her the surname "Scarlet" after her scarlet hair so they would never forget it.[20] Despite the harsh conditions of her enslavement and labor, Erza became close friends with the other children. She also formed a strong bond with Rob, an elderly Mage from the Fairy Tail Guild, who taught her about Magic and his guild.[21][22]
One day in X776, Shô came up with a plan for the eleven-year-old Erza and all their friends to escape from the tower. They were unfortunately caught by the guards, who decided to send the escape's mastermind to the tower's disciplinary chamber, while the rest would be deprived of food for three days. Seeing how fearful Shô was, Erza prepared to take the blame herself, but Jellal announced himself as the mastermind instead. However, the guards reasoned that Erza was the one responsible and sent her to the disciplinary chamber,[23] where she was tortured to the brink of death and lost her right eye. Jellal rescued her, but was captured soon after. Finally fed up with their torment, Erza staged a revolt against their captors so they could escape and save Jellal.[24]
The revolt appeared to be successful at its inception[25] until the tower's Mages arrived to repress the slaves, causing most of the other slaves to retreat. During the attack, Erza watched in horror as her friend Simon's lower jaw was blasted off by a Magical attack, while Rob sacrificed himself to defend Erza from another Mage's attack. In her rage, Erza's latent Magic Power was activated for the first time, and she used it to turn all of the discarded weapons and tools around her against the guards, finishing the revolt.[26][27]
As the other slaves boarded ships meant to ensure their freedom, she reunited with Jellal, but discovered that he had changed; the kind and compassionate boy she knew him to be was suddenly twisted and violent, using Magic to slaughter the defenseless guards around them. Jellal had been possessed by what he claimed to be the spirit of Zeref, and decided that the only way for them to attain true freedom was to complete the Tower of Heaven and revive Zeref. Erza refused to help him, prompting Jellal to cast her out of the tower by herself, only letting her live because she helped take care of all the guards who would have opposed him. Before letting her escape, Jellal told Erza to keep the Tower of Heaven a secret from the government, as well as to never return to the tower, threatening to destroy the tower and kill everyone in it, including their friends, if she disobeyed.[28]
After washing up on the shores of Fiore, Erza made her way to and joined the Fairy Tail Guild.[22] She habitually began to wear armor and acted distant from the other members.[29] After Gray, who tried picking fights with the reclusive Erza, saw her crying by herself and questioned why, she began to open up to her guildmates more.[30] Around this time, Fairy Tail's master Makarov brought Erza to see Porlyusica, who gave her an artificial eye to replace the one she lost. With her eye healed Erza shed tears of joy, which only came out of her real, left eye, though Erza didn't mind as she said she had already shed half of her tears.[31]
As the years passed, Erza became more and more strict until she could be called the guild's disciplinarian. She took responsibility for breaking up fights between Gray and Natsu. At the same time, however, she was driven to constantly fight and bicker with fellow member Mirajane, which eventually ended after Mirajane greatly mellowed out in the wake of her younger sister Lisanna's apparent death in X782. In the year X780, Erza passed Fairy Tail's annually held S-Class Mage Promotion Trial, becoming the youngest member of the guild to do so at fifteen years of age.[32]
Synopsis
Lullaby arc
While returning home from a mission to slay a colossal horned monster (bringing its horn, decorated and given to her by the locals, as a souvenir), Erza stops at a pub where she overhears a group of Mages discussing a sealed Magic called "Lullaby," with one of the members, Kageyama, claiming he will be able to break the seal. She doesn't give them much thought until she hears Kageyama mention Erigor, the "Death God" and ace of the Dark Guild, Eisenwald. Too late to act against them in time, she decides to enlist Natsu and Gray to help her fight Eisenwald and discover what the Lullaby is, as well as what they intend to do with the spell.[33]
She returns to the guild with the intention of discussing the matter with Makarov, only to learn that he is away at a meeting with the other guild masters in the country. After ritualistically berating her guildmates for their poor conduct, she tells Natsu and Gray to accompany her on her mission, shocking the entire guild with the idea that she has just formed the strongest team in the history of Fairy Tail.[34] They are joined by Lucy, the guild's newest recruit, who is requested by Mirajane to keep Natsu and Gray from bickering behind Erza's back. Before setting out the next day, Natsu challenges Erza to fight him after they return, which she accepts.[35]
Erza discusses her mission with Lucy and Gray of her mission on the train ride to Onibus; Natsu, however, is left in the dark since Erza knocks him unconscious to ease his motion sickness.[36] They are so caught up with their discussion that they accidentally leave Natsu on the train, prompting Erza to temporarily stop the train via its emergency stop signal and chase after him on a borrowed Magic Four-Wheeled Car. Upon retrieving Natsu, he says that he briefly fought with Kageyama, who had escaped, prompting Erza to berate him for not stopping him and paying attention to their discussion. Natsu further explains that the Mage was holding a skull-shaped flute, which Lucy recognizes as the Lullaby, a mass-murder curse that kills anyone who listens to its music.[37]
Desperate to stop Erigor from playing the Lullaby, Erza and the others rush for the nearby town of Oshibana, where they find Eisenwald waiting for them inside the local train station. Before escaping with the Lullaby, Erigor claims to use the Lullaby to kill everyone in the city.[38] Erza sends Natsu and Gray to chase after him while she fights against the members of Eisenwald, easily taking them all out at once. Having used up much of her Magic Power in the fight and on the Magic Four-Wheeled Car,[39] she goes outside to evacuate the citizens gathered around the station. However, Erigor reappears and casts a Wind Wall around the station, trapping Erza inside.[40]
She interrogates the defeated Eisenwald members in the station and realizes that Eisenwald's true target is Clover Town, where Makarov and the other guild masters have gathered. Remembering Kageyama's power to dispel Magic, she and Gray find Kageyama after he is defeated by Natsu and demands that he lift the Wind Wall, but he is stabbed in the back by fellow Eisenwald member Karacka to keep him quiet.[41] Fortunately, Lucy acquires the key for the Celestial spirit, Virgo from Happy, allowing the team to burrow beneath the Wind Wall and escape; before doing so, Natsu brings Kageyama, not wanting him to die.[42]
Natsu sets out to fight Erigor while Erza and the others chase after him on another Magic Four-Wheeler with Kageyama in tow.[43] By the time they catch up, they find that Natsu has successfully defeated Erigor. However, Kageyama steals the Lullaby and hijacks the vehicle, setting off for Clover Town to kill the guild masters himself. Erza and the others chase after him, but by the time they find him at the masters' meeting hall, they witness Makarov persuading Kageyama to stop his plan. Suddenly, the Lullaby comes to life and unveils a Demon that was sealed inside the flute.[44] Together with Natsu and Gray, Erza battles and destroys the demon, reverting the Lullaby into an ordinary flute, but destroying the entire meeting hall in the process.[45]
Shortly after returning to the guild, Erza keeps her promise to fight Natsu, holding their battle in front of the Fairy Tail guildhall. Before the match can be concluded, however, a messenger appears and arrests Erza on behalf of the Magic Council for the damages caused during their battle against Eisenwald.[46] As she is escorted to her trial, she encounters the Council member, Siegrain, who reveals that the Council is using her as a scapegoat to display their authority. Siegrain once again reminds Erza to keep the Tower of Heaven a secret from the Council before leaving to oversee the trial. During the trial, Natsu barges into the courtroom, while dressed as Erza, and tries to pass himself off as her in an attempt to save her, not realizing that the trial is a formality and she wouldn't be punished. As a result, the two are imprisoned together for the night. Although angry that Natsu's rampage had ruined her chance to return home for the day, she warmly admits that his gesture did make her happy.[47]
Galuna Island arc
After arriving back in Fairy Tail, Natsu tries to fight Erza again. Erza quickly hits him with her sword, knocking him out. The guild members, besides for Makarov, then all fall asleep when Mystogan walks in to take a job.[48]
After Natsu, Lucy and Gray steal a S-Class job and go to Galuna Island, Erza goes after them to stop them and return them to Fairy Tail. She hijacks a pirate ship to go to the island.[49] Erza arrives and saves Lucy from Sherry Blendy and detains Lucy and Happy for their crimes against the guild.[50]
The next day, Gray walks into one of the Galuna Islanders tents to find Erza sitting with a tied up Lucy, and Happy. Erza tells Gray to leave the island, since they broke the rule of taking an S-Class job.[51] Gray refuses and tells Erza to do whatever she wants, but it won't stop him. Shocked that someone actually stood up to her, Erza has a slight change of heart and decides to punish them after they finish the mission.[52]
Erza slices Toby, to stop the Moon Drip from releasing Deliora, but doesn't make it in time.[53] However, Deliora is found to have already died.[54]
Erza interrupts their victory by reminding everyone their mission hasn't been complete, as they haven't saved the villagers from the curse.[55] Once back at the village, Erza is the one who figures out the secret of the villagers, and uses The Giant's Armor[56] to throw a spear to the moon with the help of a very motivated Natsu. With this, they destroy a layer created by the Moon Drip, revealing that all the villagers were originally monsters who are able to turn to humans and not the other way around, and that the Moon Drip layer was simply causing their confusion.[57] She then leads the team off the island, only taking the Celestial Spirit key as a reward, and not the money. She then reminds Natsu and co. that despite finishing the mission, they are all going to get punished.[58]
Once everyone returns to Magnolia, they are surprised to find the guild completely trashed.[59]
Phantom Lord arc
Erza and the others return from Galuna Island, only to find that the guild has been attacked by Phantom Lord. Later, Erza goes to Lucy's apartment with Team Natsu, and explains the power of Phantom Lord, and that they have a Dragon Slayer as well.[60] Shortly after, Shadow Gear is attacked as well, leading to a Guild War against Fairy Tail and Phantom Lord.[61] Fairy Tail assault Phantom Lords guild,[62] but after the sucker punch defeat of Makarov by Aria,[63] Erza demands the guild to retreat.[64]
As Erza takes a shower, blaming herself for Makarov's defeat, the walking guild of Phantom Lord attacks Fairy Tail[65] with its Magical Convergent Cannon - Jupiter. Erza stops the first shot with her Adamantine Armor, but loses consciousness.[66]
Later, Erza reappears when Natsu is being beaten by Aria. Erza, angered by what he did to the master, is able to quickly defeat him.[67] As she collapses, she implores Natsu to protect Lucy and the guild from Jose and Gajeel, as his power will one day surpass even hers.[68] Gray and Elfman find Erza, but before they can aid her, Jose himself appears before them. He quickly defeats Elfman and Gray. After Erza fights him briefly, Jose remembers how Erza took the Jupiter Cannon head on, and asks her how she was able to do it. Erza replies her love for her friends make her who she is. Jose laughs, and finds Erza a person worth killing.[69]
After Natsu beats Gajeel, she reminds Jose that he lost the war because he didn't calculate Natsu's destructiveness into his plans. Erza then berates Jose's reasons for attacking Fairy Tail, and defends Lucy. Jose soon defeats Erza, but is saved by a recovered Makarov[70] who finally finishes Jose with Fairy Law.[71]
As she helps to rebuild the guild, Erza follows Gray and Natsu to Lucy's apartment only to not find her home. They all read Lucy's letters, and find a note from her claiming she is going back to her home.[72] After Erza, Natsu, Gray, and Happy arrive at the Heartfilia Konzern, they see Lucy, who just came back from telling her father she will never stay, and to leave Fairy Tail alone. Team Natsu all share a laugh, and afterwards everyone is impressed by how much land Lucy's dad owns.[73]
Loke arc
Erza is sent to help a theater in trouble; it is here she reveals her love for the theater and the dramatic arts. She signs the others up in a play to help the owner recover from his tragedy, wherein most of his actors and actresses had quit. Erza spends a long time and effort practicing for her role as the prince. During the play, Erza gets stage fright and forgets most of her lines when it comes to performing her part, to which, in some moments, she improvises to fill up sentences in her dialogue. Later though, she gets too deep into her character, as she cuts Lucy's clothes up on stage. The team ends up destroying the theater due to their recklessness, but still get a standing ovation, successfully making Rabian's play entertaining.[74]
Team Natsu finishes up a job and run into Loke shortly after. After Lucy thanks him for finding her keys, he quickly runs off though.[75] When Loke is missing from the guild the next day, Erza searches for him with Natsu.[76]
Tower of Heaven arc
Erza is one of the members invited by Loke to go with Team Natsu to an expensive resort. At the beach, Erza has a quick flashback of her slave life at the Tower of Heaven. When she wakes up from the daydream, Lucy invites her to go to the resorts casino.[77]
While at the casino, Lucy and Erza are playing cards when one of Erza's childhood friends, Shô, steps in to rotate the dealer position.[78] Suddenly, the casino lights turn off due to Simon's spell, then comes back on with Shô behind Erza, telling her that he can use Magic as well, and demonstrates this by trapping everyone in the casino inside playing cards.[79]
Another friend of Erza, Millianna, appears from behind Lucy and ties her up using her Magic ropes. Feeling insulted, Shô tells Erza that they were her friends too once, until she betrayed them. The group tells Erza that they are here to take her back home. Erza, pleading for Wally to stop, gets shot in the back by Wally's tranquilizer shot. Before their departure, Wally gives Millianna a sleeping Happy as a gift. Shô is excited to reveal that Erza will be returning to the Tower of Heaven, where Jellal is waiting.[80]
Erza later wakes up in a ship on the way to the tower, bound by Millianna's Nekōsoku Tube. Shô then appears, and yells at her for betraying Jellal. Erza then has another short flashback, revealing her imprisonment with Jellal and the rest of her old friends.[81]
As Erza arrives at the Tower, she is thrown in a prison. Shô tells her she will stay there until the "ceremony" starts tomorrow. He then tells her that she will be the sacrifice for "Paradise". Erza tells Shô not to use the R-System to resurrect the Black Mage, Zeref, because of the consequences it will bring to the Magic World. Erza then brings Shô to his knees by kicking him in the face, and then sets out to search for Jellal.[82]
Erza fights her way through some guards, asking where Jellal is, and eventually comes across Natsu and co., who has also teamed up with Juvia Lockser. Although she is surprised to see them, she tells them to go back. Natsu refuses, one reason being because Millianna has Happy. Erza apologizes, saying that she will lose this fight no matter what. Erza then tells them about the Tower of Heaven and about her past.[83]
After sharing her past, Erza tells Gray, Lucy, and Juvia, that she is destined to fight Jellal.[84] Meanwhile, Jellal's Thought Projection, Siegrain, is gathering votes at the Magic Council to destroy the Tower of Heaven with the Etherion.[85] Back at the Tower, Erza tells the others that Zeref was the strongest Dark Mage ever. He created horrible and destructive monsters. Lucy points out that the Lullaby was one of Zeref's monsters. Erza also thinks that Deliora was one, too. Lucy then asks why Erza is considered a traitor to her old friends. Erza doesn't know why, but suspects Jellal made something up. Shô then appears, hearing what actually happened eight years ago and cannot believe that Jellal was tricking them all this time. Simon then appears, revealing he knew all along that Jellal was lying. They all decide to work together to stop Jellal.[86]
Everybody follows Simon in an attempt to look for Natsu and stop Erza's other friends from attacking.[87] The company learns that they can't escape, because they need to defeat Jellal and the assassins of Death's Head Caucus', Trinity Raven, before Jellal activates the tower that will cause the Council to release the Etherion, which will destroy the tower and them along with it.[88] After hearing what will happen, Shô traps Erza in one of his cards and runs off with her.[89] Erza and Shô run into Ikaruga. Ikaruga claims that she can slice anything, even separate dimensions like Shô's cards. With this, she quickly defeats him.[90]
Ikaruga starts attacking Erza, who is still inside Shô's card. After a few more slices, Erza breaks out of it. All of a sudden, Erza's armor is cut into pieces, showing that she didn't dodge all of Ikaruga's attacks successfully.[91] She then Requips her Heaven's Wheel Armor. The two girls attack each other head on. Erza Requips several armors, but all of them easily break by Ikaruga's sword. Erza then gets up and Requips a sarashi, with a flame patterned bottom hakama.[92]
Erza explains there is nothing special about her armor. All her life she had locked her heart away in her suit of armor, and that had made her weak and afraid. Now that she wears none, she believes she can defeat Ikaruga.[93] The two ladies charge towards each other, their swords clashing for the final time. Although Erza gets slashed, Erza's slash to Ikaruga is able to defeat her. Erza tells Shô to get everybody else out the tower, claiming that she will fight Jellal and end this.[94]
Erza makes it to the part of the tower where Jellal is. Jellal claims the game is over, and Erza asks if playing with people's lives are fun. She thinks Jellal is bluffing about the Etherion falling, but he claims that he is not and that either way, she will be a sacrifice for Zeref. The two battle, and Erza eventually pins Jellal to the ground with her sword at his neck.[95]
She then tells Jellal he failed at completing the R-System because the tower has no Magic to resurrect. There needs to be 2.7 billion Edeas in order for the tower to activate. Trying to make her give up, he explains how his body was possessed by Zeref and how he is nothing more than a doll doing his bidding.
He says he knew he could not finish the R-System, but Zeref would not stop him. He asks Erza to strike him down. She refuses and hugs Jellal as the Etherion hits the tower, completely destroying the outer structure of the tower.[96]
Surprised that she is alive after the blast, she looks around and notices there is Lacrima everywhere and that the structure is an absorption crystal. Jellal explains that the Council's Etherion provided the tower with 2.7 billion Edeas to bring Zeref back. Just then, Siegrain shows up and reveals that he and Jellal are the same person, and that he became a Council Member just to cast the Etherion down on the tower. They both reveal that they are the same person and that Siegrain was just a Thought Projection. Now that the two have morphed back together, Jellal's full Magic Power returns.[97]
A Bind Snake Jellal cast earlier stops Erza from moving. Before putting her in the Lacrima to be the sacrifice for Zeref, Natsu arrives to pull Erza out. Erza tells Natsu to leave and not fight Jellal, because she is afraid of the consequences that will happen to him. Natsu then punches her, causing her to faint while mentioning he'll win this fight. Enraged by how much Jellal has hurt Erza, Natsu flares up and goes to fight Jellal.[98]
Erza then wakes up to Natsu being blasted by Jellal's meteor attacks. Natsu starts destroying the tower so the resurrection cannot occur. Jellal prepares another attack on Natsu, but Erza gets in front, hoping that he won't attack her. He still prepares to launch it, claiming that it does not matter who the sacrifice is, now that there is so much damage. He launches his attack. Opening her eyes, Erza sees that Simon is in front of her and that he used his body as a shield to protect her. He falls to the ground, confesses his love for Erza, and then dies. Erza screams in anguish as Natsu continues his battle with Jellal. By eating the Etherion,[99] Natsu manages to defeat Jellal,[100] but the tower becomes unstable and is ready to blow up, which will kill anyone near it.[101]
Back in the tower, Erza carries Natsu on her back. She shortly realizes that she needs to be the sacrifice to control the Magic energy and stop the explosion. She then puts her body half-way in the crystal, only for Natsu to wake up and ask her what she is doing. She tells him she cannot imagine a world without her friends and if she dies saving everybody, then she has no regrets; she then offers her body to the R-System so that she can control it. She blanks out completely.[102]
Erza wakes up in a dress, wondering where she is. Everything is white around her. The scene turns to her funeral. Erza realizes that she is dead and that nobody is happy. Natsu doesn't believe Erza is dead and refuses to accept it, causing a ruckus as the funeral. As everybody cries, Erza realizes that she made a mistake.[103]
She then wakes up, realizing it was a dream. All of her friends run towards her, and Natsu carries her towards them. He lays her in the water, to which Erza is amazed that he was able to not only find, but also take her out the vortex alive. Natsu in tears tells Erza not to sacrifice herself ever again. Erza promises him to do so, and she comes to the realization that she doesn't need to die for her friends, but to live for them, because that is that only way to bring the best future. For the first time since eight years ago, she cries tears of joy, out of both eyes.[104]
Wally, Millianna and Shô apologize to Erza, saying they didn't want to hurt her. Erza suggests they come to Fairy Tail. Later, Lucy asks where Shô and the others went. Erza dashes out to go look for them.[105] She then realizes that her former comrades decided to leave Erza’s side, saying that they have caused her too much pain for her. Erza then prepares for them the official Fairy Tail’s Farewell Ceremony. After a few promises, she recites the rules when leaving Fairy Tail, and cries goodbye to them, hoping to see them again someday. After that, Natsu, Lucy, Gray and Erza throw a farewell bash, wishing Shô, Millianna, and Wally well as they depart, finally free and living their own lives.[106]
Fighting Festival arc
Erza comes back to the guild to see it rebuilt and in great condition; but her happiness is interrupted when she finds that Gajeel Redfox has joined Fairy Tail. She voices her concerns with Makarov, but as he gives her his confidence, she petitions to have Gajeel watched.[107]
Later, when a reporter from Sorcerer Magazine comes to Fairy Tail to interview the members, she wears a modified version of her Heart Kreuz Armor. She surprises everyone when she expresses her desire to be interviewed.[108]
During the festival, Erza competes for the title of "Miss Fairy Tail", requipping into a beautiful dress that Lucy recognizes as goth lolita style in front of everyone, and states that victory is hers. However, she is turned to stone, along with all the other Miss Fairy Tail contestants by Evergreen.[109]
Natsu and Gajeel try to turn her back to normal with Natsu's flame, thinking that it would release her from the stone. She does get revived, but due to her artificial eye halving the effect of Evergreen's Magic. She soon realizes that even Mystogan has arrived to fight Laxus Dreyar, in order to help save the guild.[110]
She then goes to town to find Laxus, but encounters Evergreen instead. She threatens Evergreen to release the other girls, but Evergreen is more interested in claiming the title of "Titania" for herself instead. After fighting her for some time, Erza pins her against a wall. Evergreen reveals to her she'll kill the girls if Erza doesn't strip to degrade herself. Erza responds by requipping into her Heaven's Wheel Armor and threatens to kill Evergreen herself if she doesn't revive the girls, and thus, Evergreen concedes and the girls are released.[111]
After her fight with Evergreen, both Erza and Natsu find Laxus and Mystogan already fighting in the Cathedral. When Erza witnesses the true face of Mystogan, it turns out to resemble Jellal's completely. Not knowing it wasn't Jellal, her eyes begin to shed tears and she becomes emotionally unstable for a moment. Mystogan claims he is not Jellal, but he knows who he is, and then quickly disappears, leaving Laxus to Erza and Natsu.[112] She recovers from the surprise though and prepares to attack Laxus with her Lightning Empress Armor, but later decides to trust Natsu to stop Laxus, and goes to destroy the Thunder Palace instead to protect everyone in Magnolia.[113]
With the help of Warren Rocko, she communicates with all her comrades, and they help her to destroy the Thunder Palace's Lacrimas. In the end, she manages to take out two-hundred Lacrimas, which are the majority of them.[114]
After Laxus is defeated, the Harvest Festival continues with the Fantasia Parade. Erza performs with her swords on her float, not knowing Mystogan watches her.[115] When Laxus leaves the guild, Erza and the rest of the guild puts up the sign he and Makarov made up, meaning they will always be watching over him.[116]
Oración Seis arc
Erza begins to try and find out about Mystogan; however, she realizes Makarov knows nothing about him. Stumped, Erza wonders about Mystogan's relationship to Jellal, and why they both have the same exact face.[117]
Later, Erza and her team begin to go on a mission to hunt a Mage hunter, but she becomes surprised when she hears Lucy went off to Acalypha and took out the Naked Mummy Guild by herself.[118]
Later, Makarov reveals that an alliance of guilds has been made in order to take down one of the Dark Guilds part of the Balam Alliance, the Oración Seis, and that Fairy Tail is a part of it. Team Natsu is chosen as Fairy Tail's representatives.[119] They meet up with the Blue Pegasus Guild delegates, The Trimens that are none other than, Hibiki Lates, Eve Tearm, Ren Akatsuki, and to Erza's horror, Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki. They also meet the delegates of Lamia Scale Guild: Jura Neekis, Lyon Vastia and Sherry Blendy, as well as the delegates of Cait Shelter: Wendy Marvell[120] and Carla.[121] As all the delegates get together, Erza follows Natsu and Gray as they run to find the Oración Seis.[122]
As the Oración Seis finds them, Erza battles Cobra in her Flight Armor. However, she is bitten by his snake and she suffers from the extreme poison.[123] As Lucy gives Erza her belt to strap on her arm, she begs for someone to cut her poisoned arm off. Lyon steps forward to do this, but this is denied by her fellow Fairy Tail members and an argument erupts. However, Carla explains to them that Wendy, who was kidnapped by Brain, can help her, as her Magic allows her to heal the injured.[124] As the others leave to rescue Wendy, Lucy and Hibiki Lates stay behind to take care of her.[125] After Natsu arrives with Wendy, she treats Erza and removes the poison.[126] When the others notice a pillar of black light in the sky, Natsu knows Jellal is there and rushes forward.[127] In the ensuing confusion, Erza slips away, intending to find Jellal as well.[128]
Because the others are impeded in fights against the Oración Seis, Erza manages to reach Jellal first, although she is unsure of how to act towards him. To her surprise, she discovers that he has become amnesiac, and is only able to remember her name.[129] As Erza explains who he is and what he did to his comrades, Jellal breaks down in tears upon learning what kind of person he is.[130] Suddenly, Cobra appears and attempts to take Nirvana, but Jellal reveals that he put a Self-Destruction Spell around Nirvana to destroy it. However, he also put the spell on himself so he can end his life, and free Erza from the pain he has caused to her.[131]
She doesn't take this too kindly and runs up to him, grabs him and demands that he cancel the spell and live. Moments later, Brain appears, revealing that he taught Jellal the Self-Destruction Spell, and easily cancels it, before activating the second stage of Nirvana. Erza and Jellal are caught in Nirvana's skywards eruption, as she holds onto Jellal with one hand. She pulls him up, saying that he should live on to see the future as Fairy Tail members do with their connection of "hope".[132]
Later, Midnight appears before her and quickly defeats Jellal, revealing his Reflector Magic to her.[133] She tries her best to fight him, but all her attacks are reflected and her armor becomes reflected to confine her. As Midnight tortures Jellal with the truth of his deeds, Erza reassures Jellal that she believes that there is still goodness in him, and Requips to her Robe of Yūen, readying herself for round two against Midnight.[134] Erza reveals all three of Midnight's weaknesses, which are not being able to reflect two things at once, her not being able to work on humans, and Erza's current armor being made out of rubber.[135]
Midnight says that at midnight, his refracting gets to his peak as he transforms into a giant monster. He creates a giant explosion and stabs Jellal and Erza. He is then successfully slashed and defeated by Erza as she reveals his transformation was all just an illusion.[136] Afterwards, she manages to get into contact with the others through Hibiki's telepathy, only to learn that Nirvana is controlled by six different Lacrima Crystals.[137]
After their discussion and planning, Hibiki implants a map to guide them towards the location of each Lacrima Crystal. Erza says she will handle Lacrima number five. When Jellal is about to say he'll destroy the sixth Lacrima, she immediately interrupts him. She whispers to him that Natsu still doesn't know his relation towards the mission and might mistake him as an enemy. When Erza finishes, Natsu answers that he seemed to have heard a familiar voice, but Hibiki's connection is then lost.[138]
Erza arrives in front of the fifth Lacrima, waiting for the appointed time to arrive and destroy it.[139] After Natsu's victory over Zero, the rest of the Mages including Erza manage to destroy all six Lacrima Crystals, destroying Nirvana.[140] Everyone rejoices as they are reunited. Erza says that she will support Jellal and he does not need to care about his memories. At this moment, they stare at each other, only for the New Magic Council to interrupt and arrest Hoteye and Jellal for their past criminal acts.[141]
As Jellal willingly gives himself up to the Council, Lahar warns him that this will probably be the last time he ever sees them again, for he will either be given the death sentence or life imprisonment. Suddenly, an angered Natsu starts to fight against the Council, trying to bring Jellal back. This causes every other Mage to fight for Jellal as well, except for Erza, who can only tremble in anger and watch the chaos. Erza decides to stop the commotion once and for all, and lets the Council take Jellal away. Jellal looks back at her in relief, but not before he mentions her scarlet hair, implying that he remembers the time he chose her last name, Scarlet.[142]
They say their final farewells and as Jellal is taken away, everyone looks on sadly. Erza later sits alone, crying for the loss of her friend as she remembers when she and Jellal were together as kids, and him choosing her last name based on her hair color.[143]
Back at Cait Shelter, Roubaul reveals to Allied Forces that Wendy's whole guild was just an illusion he made after she was left in his care. Wendy, now alone,is comforted by Erza and invited to join Fairy Tail.[144]
Daphne arc
Note: Events in this arc occur only in the anime and do not constitute canon material.
After Erza orders cakes, she is randomly attacked by a concealed individual. Erza is able to fend him off for a while, until the enemy quickly disappears. Erza returns to the guild and informs Makarov about her strange encounter. She points out the the attacks was not human. Makarov just tells her to be patient, as the group the enemy belongs to will certainly strike again.[145]
Later in the day, Erza worries about the location of Natsu and Wendy, and wonders if they were attacked by the same creature she faced earlier. She asks Lucy to come along with her as they search for them. When the two arrive at the coordinates Gray gave, they are confronted by Erza's attacker. As Erza fights, the attacker is revealed to be a Lizardman, who can mimic anybody's Magic. Erza is able to defeat the Lizardman though, after she realizes the Lizardman lacks the same Re-equip speed she has.[146]
Their victory is short though, as soon a being using Natsu's Magic Power, the Dragonoid, appears with the creator of the Lizardmen, Daphne, controlling it. Wendy, Carla, and Happy meet up with Lucy and Erza, soon after, and explain the situation to them.[146]
After Daphne reveals her lifelong ambition of creating an artificial Dragon, Wakaba, Macao and Elfman soon arrive. Elfman is able to knock out Gray, but the situation worsens when the Dragonoid takes flight to Magnolia. Erza says she will stop the Dragonoid, and that everyone else should mobilize at camp. Erza is able to get onto the Dragonoid's tail, where she finds several Lizardmen ready to do battle with her. Erza is victorious, just as the Dragon lands in Magnolia. Erza is thrown off the Dragon, but is quickly backed up by Fairy Tail.[147]
Erza fights the Dragonoid head on while everyone else fights the Lizardmen. Eventually, Natsu is somewhat able to communicate through the Dragonoid. Everyone encourages him to fight against it. Erza starts attacking one of the vital points of the Dragonoid. Gajeel appears though, and if effectively able to finish it off. Erza then celebrates with the rest of the guild.[148]
Edolas arc
After the return of Gildarts Clive, he tells Natsu he has something to tell him, Erza urges Natsu and Lucy not to take on the Hundred Year quest that Gildarts had recently failed.[149] Later, Erza comments on Bisca Mulan and Alzack Connell getting along well. Erza tells them to treasure these memories so they will not regret them later. Makarov then calls Erza over, telling her that about his choice to pass the Hundred Year Quest to another guild, to which she agrees.[150] Later, the Anima sucks up Fairy Tail, and all of Magnolia into Edolas, including Erza.[151][152] However, Gajeel releases her and Gray from the Lacrima[153] with Mystogan's help. Mystogan then sends them to Edolas with X-Balls that allow Earth Land people to use Magic freely in Edolas.[154]
When Erza Knightwalker is about to kill Happy, Erza and Gray bash some of the Edolas Guards and show up, ready to attack, and declare Erza Knightwalker to be an enemy of Fairy Tail.[155] Seeing that her counterpart is about to strike Gray, Erza quickly blocks her counterpart's spear with her sword, and the clash of their weapons. Realizing that her group cannot not proceed any further than they already have with Knightwalker hot on their tails, Scarlet orders her friends to carry on without her.[156]
As the two Erzas fight, Knightwalker explains her Magical weapon, The Ten Commandments. Scarlet notices how her counterpart's Magic is a lot like hers.[157]
Erza is successful in defeating her counterpart, and takes on her guise as Knightwalker afterwards.[158] Erza, still in disguise, catches up with Natsu and Gray and captures them. She drags them to the Dragon Chain Cannon room, commenting on how she can see eternal Magic coming.[159]
She then orders Gray to activate the cannon aiming towards the island, with the threat that she would kill Natsu if he did not comply. Right at the crucial moment, however, Erza Scarlet suddenly shouts at Natsu to fight, before quickly holding her sword at Faust's throat, revealing her true identity to everyone else, and that the entire plan to be a ruse. She then tells the soldiers to move the coordinates to fire at the Lacrima, or she will kill the King.[160]
However, the real Erza Knightwalker vaults over the wall of the control room and frees Faust, which leads to the release of cannon on the Lacrima island. Just then, an ally of theirs, Coco, arrives on her Legion, helping them all escape. They then set flight towards the Lacrima island to save Magnolia.[161] She then helps everyone to push back the Lacrima island, enough for Mystogan to send the giant Lacrima back to Earth Land. Just when everything seems over though, Erza's counterpart shoots Pantherlily, declaring the battle is not over yet.[162] When the Dorma Anim shows up, Natsu tells her that he, along with Gajeel and Wendy, would take care of Faust, while she and her group should protect the Exceeds.[163] However, as they try to catch up, Knightwalker ambushes the legion that they are on. While Lucy, Gray, and Coco fall, Erza merely chains on to another legion and clashes with her counterpart once more, with both of them declaring that there is only room for one Erza, and the other one must perish.[164]
The second round starts off with each Erza fighting ferociously, as Scarlet uses several different armors, and Knightwalker changes her spears forms. Eventually, Erza comments on how they're both evenly matched, but then Knightwalker decides at that moment to use her trump card, Ravelt. Erza then Requips into the Armadura Fairy Armor. As the two Erza's clash, they create an explosion large enough to shatter the entire island, and in the process, Erza's armor is destroyed along with Knightwalker's spear.[165]
However, even though they both have already run out of Magic, they have a fist fight, while debating about whether it is wrong to extort Magic from Extalia. Erza finally manages to knock some sense into Knightwalker, telling her that they can still survive without Magic, and that it can be overcome. She then tells Knightwalker that they are the same, and as Erza herself has the same evil qualities and weaknesses in Knightwalker, Knightwalker herself has the same compassionate heart as Erza. The falling island then crashes into the ground, and both Erzas no longer have the strength to move. Knightwalker then admits defeat, but Erza denies this, saying that there is no such thing, seeing as they're the same person.[166]
With the two Erza's peace is made, the Reverse-Anima begins to take Scarlet back to Earth Land. The two Erzas bid one final farewell.[167] After returning to Earth Land, she is surprised to see the Exceeds have arrived in Earth Land, and after hearing about their story, no one has grudge against them. The Exceeds decide to find all the eggs they sent to Earth Land, and bid a final farewell to Fairy Tail.[168]
However, when the Exceeds leave, Erza, along with Gray and Natsu, are surprised when Pantherlily drags out the captured Lisanna.[169] However, Lisanna reveals that she was never dead, but that she was merely transported to Edolas by the Anima, and she is in fact the Lisanna everyone knows. Erza, alongside Natsu and the others, helps Lisanna to return to her siblings.[170]
Tenrou Island arc
Back at Fairy Tail, everybody is acting hyper again. Pantherlily tells Erza that it's comforting to see a familiar face like hers, even though she's not the Erza he knew.[171] Later, Erza is by Makarov's side for the announcing of the S-Class Mage Promotion Trial. Gajeel is not elected to participate, as Erza claims it is too soon for the guild to trust him yet.[172] After the rules are explained, it is revealed that Erza will be participating along with Mirajane and Gildarts. Their main role in the trial is to attempt to hinder the selected teams in some way.[173]
After the participants get to Tenrou Island, Makarov tells them there will be eight paths, and of them, seven will result in battles.[174] She waits in Path D, and battles both Juvia and Lisanna.[175] Despite a valiant fight, Erza easily manages to defeat them.[176] After the first part of the exam is over, she, along with Juvia, Lisanna, and Mirajane, all rest at the camp on the island. She questions why Mest and Wendy aren't at the base, which sends her and Juvia out to look for them.[177]
Later, Erza and Juvia both find an injured Levy McGarden. Erza, with Juvia and Levy go to help Gajeel, to find he successfully beat Kawazu and Yomazu, members of a Dark Guild, Grimoire Heart. While they check up on Gajeel's condition, Yomazu announces that The Seven Kin of Purgatory is coming, the aces of Grimoire Heart. Erza immediately announces that the exam is now on hold, and sends a warning flare signal to the rest of the guild members present on Tenrou Island.[178]
Erza goes over to Yomazu and asks what their goals are. He then reveals they are here for the Black Mage, Zeref. He tells them Zeref lived 400 years ago, and has since been in a "slumbering" state.[179] When the Grimoire Heart Guild arrives on the island, members surround Juvia and Erza, and they prepare to fight them.[180] They easily defeat all the members in their immediate vicinity, but are then confronted by Meredy. Erza warns Juvia not to underestimate her just because she is a kid, saying that she can sense a strange Magic from the girl.[181]
In her battle with Juvia against Meredy, Meredy uses Maguilty Sodom, which creates Magic swords that are sent flying towards her and Juvia. The attack manages to pierce Juvia's water body, which causes Erza to question what type of Magic it is.[182]
As they battle continues, Meredy goes on to explain her rankings for people to kill, and says Gray Fullbuster is first, since he is the reason Ultear's mother Ur was killed. Meredy then sends more swords towards Erza, but Juvia uses her water to surround and knock all of her blades away. Juvia then says she can't forgive Meredy now. Erza, with a nervous look, remarks that Juvia should calm down.[183]
Juvia proceeds to attack Meredy with astonishing strength. This shocks Erza, who notices that Juvia's fighting is nothing like how she was during the exams. She finally understands that Juvia's true powers come out when she fights for a loved one. Juvia tells Erza that she will handle Meredy and that Erza needs to go find Wendy and Gray. Erza departs leaving Juvia to her.[184]
As Erza runs around looking for her guild mates, Azuma emerges upside down from a tree and provokes her into a fight[185] After Requipping a few more armors, she and Azuma battle for a while longer. Azuma comments that he and Erza are the same as they both pursue the strong opponents. Erza, however, replies that she only needs the strength to protect her comrades. Azuma smiles after hearing the statement and activates his Lost Magic, Great Tree Arc to uproot Tenrou Island's tree,[186] which had the ability to protect and give strength to every Fairy Tail member. Azuma then tells Erza that her friends' lives are on the line, and to show him if she has enough power to protect them.[187]
Erza asks Azuma why she's the only not affected by his damage to the Tenrou Tree. He says he wants to fight her when she's serious, to which Erza responds by claiming she will defeat him no matter what, but makes Azuma promise if she beats him, he'll return the guild's Magic Power. Erza and Azuma square off once more, but she has great trouble gaining the upper-hand. She decides that she needs to put all her Magic Power into one attack without using any power for defense, so she Requips to just a sarashi and a single sword. She goes all out using her Crimson Cherry technique, but Azuma is easily able to ensnare Erza before she gets to him, and uses the Terra Clamare send Erza to the brink of defeat.[188]
While Erza is unconscious, she hears Jellal's voice telling her not to lose, and she wakes up, telling herself it's just her imagination and that she needs to focus on Azuma. She attacks him, forcing him on the defense for a bit, but once again, he bind her arms and legs, hitting her with his strongest attack once more. As Erza falls to her defeat, she hears Natsu's voice asking her if she was going to give up, and has other visions of her friends in the guild. This gives her the resolve to get back up. She apologizes to them, mentioning that she wasn't protecting everyone but instead, she was the one being protected.[189]
As she comes toward Azuma, he is surprised that he has lost control of the Tenrou Island Magic and that it now protects Erza. He thinks to himself that their true strength is not in the individual but the sum of them, and calls them an amazing guild. Erza lands a finishing blow, defeating Azuma.[190]
After defeating Azuma, Erza falls to the ground, battle worn, and notices Azuma's body transforming into a tree. He states that it is a side effect of overusing his Lost Magic. He then tells her that, as promised, he would return everyone's Magic Power to them. She then asks him if he knew a man name Jellal. Azuma states that he does and explains that Jellal is a sad man whose become obsessed with the idea that Zeref ghost exist and that he lost all sense of reason. Erza then asks him why they are after Zeref. Azuma states that it is to get closer to the very first Magic in the world, as it would lead to what Jellal called, "Paradise". Azuma tries to explain further but is completely transformed into trees.[191]
Erza soon meets up with Gray, Natsu, Wendy, Lucy, Pantherlily, Happy, and Carla and they all head towards the Grimoire Heart airship to fight Hades, the final enemy on the island.[192] Before going on the ship, Natsu tells the Exceeds to search for the ship's power source and destroy it in order to prevent it from taking off. After Wendy casts Troia on Natsu as a precautionary measure, the group head inside the airship. Erza reminds the group that Hades is a powerful Mage and that to use their full power from the start. All the Mages fight to the best of their ability, and send Hades crashing into one of the walls. He emerges unharmed though, and claims he is ready to get serious. He screams out "Katsu", and Wendy disappears.[193]
A voice is heard above all of them, as it is revealed Horologium saved her at the last second by forcing his gate open, commenting that since the danger was higher than normal he came out to help. Horologuim's time is spent so he releases a newly clothed Wendy and tells the group to be more careful before disappearing.[194]
Everyone prepares to attack again. Hades mocks the current Fairy Tail, and tells his opponents he was the second master of Fairy Tail. A disbelieving Natsu charges, but Hades attack him, as well as everyone else, leaving them all on the ground. As Team Natsu lay defeated, Hades starts to belittle Makarov, but Natsu defends him, prompting Hades to brutally beat up Natsu, while Erza and the others watch in horror. Just when Hades is about to finish Natsu off, Laxus appears and headbutts the former master.[195]
After Laxus fails at beating Hades, and gives his Magic Power to Natsu,[196] Erza remarks how the situation is similar to when Natsu ate the Etherion.[197] After Natsu attacks Hades with his Lighting Flame attacks, Erza is shocked to see Hades is still okay. Hades then removes his eye patch and shows the group the "Abyss of Magic", which transforms Hades and increases his Magic Power drastically.[198] After displaying his Living Magic spells, Natsu tells the group to use the fear they are experiencing to become stronger. With that, everyone helps launch Natsu at Hades, even though none of them have Magic Power left. Natsu and Hades's final collision ends with the ship exploding.[199] Natsu prevails punching Hades in the face. Hades doesn't know how he lost, until he feels that his heart had been destroyed somewhere on the ship. He reveals his heart was the only thing that let him use all his Magic. Wendy shows Erza, Gray, and Lucy that the Tenrou tree is back up, which was thanks to Ultear's Arc of Time.[200] Everyone then attacks Hades, with Natsu landing the final blow to defeat him.[201]
After their success, the rest of the injured Fairy Tail members show up and scare off the remaining Grimoire Heart members. Afterwards, all the guild members head back to camp and rejoice in their victory.[202] Their rest, however, is cut short when Acnologia arrives and attacks the guild members. Erza watches as Makarov holds the beast off and tells his guild members that his final order is for them to escape.[203] However, she, along with the rest of Fairy Tail, comes back and attempts to fight Acnologia. Their attack amounts to nothing, and all the Fairy Tail members hold hands in an attempt to negate the attack as the island is destroyed by the Dragon's Dragon Roar. They fail and Tenrou Island is destroyed.[204]
X791 arc
Erza along with the rest of the Tenrou Team are rescued by Bisca, Alzack, Jet, Droy, Max, Warren and the Trimens from Blue Pegasus. She watches as Mavis Vermilion reveals that she was the one who saved them and then disappears. She returns to the Fairy Tail Guild and, along with Natsu, Gajeel and Gray, defeats the members of Twilight Ogre who were threatening Romeo, later being welcomed back by him and the older Fairy Tail members.[205]
Erza joins their welcome back party, and is surprised to hear that Bisca and Alzack have gotten married and have a child.[206] Erza is later confronted by the couple again in Magnolia Town, and they reveal startling information about Jellal to her.[207] Later, Erza, along with Mirajane, accompanies Makarov to the Twilight Ogre Guild to pay them back everything they owe. She dons her Purgatory Armor and she, along with Makarov and Mirajane, proceed to fight the entire guild.[208]
Key of the Starry Sky arc
Note: Events in this arc occur only in the anime and do not constitute canon material.
Whilst Fairy Tail practices their dancing in preparation for a ball, Erza shows up and states that she is known as the "Dancing Demon", but she basically spins her partner like a top. After being rejected by many in the guild due to this, she is then seen dancing with Freed. After the practice, Erza decides to accompany the group to the ball. Once there, they are greeted by the client's daughter, Aceto. Inside, the client, Count Balsamico, tells them that the purpose of the ball is to pick Aceto's future husband. He tells them that criminal Velveno is believed to be sneaking into the ball to steal a precious heirloom, and asks them to guard it. During the ball, a man asks Erza to dance, and Warren thinks he might be suspicious. Natsu and Gray start towards him, but when Erza starts spinning him, everyone realizes she is fine by herself. When Velveno does appear, Erza tries to use her Purgatory Armor against him, but it is ineffective due to his Magic. She is then shocked when Velveno reveals that he only came to the ball to ask for Aceto's hand in marriage.[209]
In the guild, Erza is listening to Natsu being angry about being kicked out of Lucy's apartment. She agrees with Carla that trespassing is a flagrant breach of manners and they ought to draw a line with just flippantly entering Lucy's house. When the guild starts fighting, she states that being calm is a sign of being an adult, but soon joins the brawl as well. When they find Lucy, she and the others listen to her as she explains how she became invisible. When Natsu suggests burning Lucy, Erza openly supports this, considering that when she was a statue, he had used the same technique. When the guild toys with Lucy's face, Erza also tries painting Lucy. After Lucy vanishes completely, she and the others go back to their work, having forgotten about her. When Lucy turns back to normal, Happy spills the ointment, which turns everyone, invisible except Lucy.[210]
When Michelle arrives at the guild and asks if she can join them on their job, Erza agrees, saying that everything is an experience and people get the most out of the things they are not ready for. Later, Erza borrows a wagon from the client, and explains the plan to capture the bandits. She and Lucy will drive the carriage while Natsu, Gray and Michelle will ride at the back. They will distract them while the boys defeat the bandits in a sneak attack. Before she goes any further, Natsu interrupts to refuse to ride in the carriage. When Michelle volunteers to be decoy, Erza ponders over whether it will work. When the plan is in action, Erza gets disappointed that her plan fails due to the bandits being homosexual, and fights them angrily. After they defeat the bandits, Erza asks Michelle how she found the experience. Back at the guild, she listens as Natsu and Lucy discuss putting the mystery of the memento up as a job. She then watches as the key levitates and ancient letters start appearing on it.[211]
A while after Michelle arrives, Erza and Gray ask Lucy go on a job with them, which she decides to pass. When they find out Natsu is also unavailable, Erza decides that just she and Gray will go to the mission, much to Juvia's dismay. Upon arriving at the bandits hideout they are meant to be finding, the two notice that the bandits have not yet returned, so they decide to wait. Erza then asks Gray why he hasn't stripped yet, with Gray answering that he’s not in the mood. She then orders Gray to sleep and sleeps herself. When Gray is secretly admiring her sleeping face, she wakes up, sensing the bandits arriving. They corner the bandits and Erza asks them to surrender, but the Vanish Brothers appear, having been hired by the bandits as bodyguards. Gray tells Erza that he wants to fight the Vanish Brothers alone, to which she agrees. When Gray is victorious, she tells the bandits that she is going to give the stolen gold back to its owners.[212]
Erza interrupts the fight of Gildarts Clive and Byro Cracy by throwing a spear on Kanaloa and joining Gildarts in an attempt to defeat Byro.[213]
Together with Team Natsu, Wendy, and Carla, they search through the Heartfilia mansion for possible clues regarding the “crusade” and the clock. After uncovering the secrets of the anagram, they are confronted by Samuel, who they decide to attack, which is repelled by Dan Straight. After a brief stall, Erza tells Lucy and the others to go with the book as she takes care of Dan. She Requips to her Flight Armor and clashes with the knighted man, but she is unable to attack him with her weapons due to his Ricochet's abilities. Eventually, she is defeated by him and left immobilized in the room.[214]
When Fairy Tail decides to separate into teams in order to gather the five remaining keys, Erza teams up with Cana, Wendy and Carla. Erza sets up a picnic, stating that it is her plan, much to her teammates’ confusion. But the picnic is interrupted by a group of muggers, who destroy and eat all of Erza’s food. Erza in complete anger mode, attacks all muggers with her Lightning Empress Armor, sending all her enemies away.[215]
Erza states that her group is lost, and Cana says that they have been going in circles. Carla begins to think that someone may be playing a prank on them by switching the sign directions or trying to trap them. After some trouble, Erza's group reaches its destination: a Magical library. Erza opens the door and sees a huge room filled with many books. Upon removing a book from a bookshelf, some other books fall out, revealing a Jiggle Butt Gang's member wiggling backside.[216]
Erza pokes the mysterious backside, causing somebody to scream and the books start toppling over them. Luckily, she and the others manage to dodge it in time. She watches as Carla and Wendy recognize the three men and berates them for forcing Wendy into their outfit. After Carla expresses her nightmare, the Jiggle Butt Gang praise themselves about how evil they are. Erza is annoyed and demands they tell them why they came to the library, to which the leader express that every criminal knows that Fairy Tail is searching for a treasure. Wendy asks the leader to listen to her. He agrees, but insists that Erza wears their attire in exchange, which she stoically agrees. Finally wearing the attire, she fixates a white flower into her hair that she got from the picnic earlier. She then lectures them about true evil, questioning why they pride themselves with such an outfit. The Jiggle Butt Gang weeps after their leader explains the origin of their suits. Erza says that she cannot cry over a story so shallow and belittles their futile attempts of "evil".
Erza implies that to be a leader, they must be a paragon. She demands the boss to do 100 push-ups to show his lackeys at least a "fraction" of his power. The boss agrees and begins to do push-ups at a quick speed. He struggles with his 38th push-up, and Erza continues to disdain him. The leader then shows Erza his gluteus maximus and proudly exclaims it is the gang's pride and joy. He assembles his lackeys and they prepare to use Gas Butt Triple Ecstasy and fire the blast at Wendy, who pushes Erza out just in time. Wendy informs Erza that Cana has found the clock piece. When the gang hears this, the boss attaches his posterior to Erza's nose, firing Point Blank Ecstasy before running off. Later, Erza is seen on her way out to find Jiggle Butt Gang. Erza cries out that they deserve a punishment for ruining her flower and sends the gang flying away. When Erza sees the clock part, she comments that it's nothing and they can just carry it along with her luggage.[217]
Later, Erza along with Cana, Wendy and Carla plans to have their first picnic, however, the Jiggle Jugs Gang arrives, saying that the land is theirs. Angered by the Jiggle Jugs Gang for interrupting her plans of having her first picnic, Erza glares at them, telling them that she will teach them a lesson, and Requips her Demon Blade Crimson Sakura.[218]
Erza arrives at the location of Lucy's group just in time, in order to save Coco from Byro's Divine Arrow, saying that it makes her sick when one attempts to hurt their own ally. When it is revealed that all the Fairy Tail Mages have succeeded in acquiring one of the clock parts, Erza declares that what is left is the clock part that Byro stole from Lucy. She tells him to give the part, as he would not be able to fight all of them at once, and that Fairy Tail will protect the Infinity Clock. When Byro refuses to surrender, she, along with other Fairy Tail Mages, attempts to attack him, only for her Magic to be nullified. Erza then mentions they just have to defeat him in hand-to-hand combat, but asks the other Mages to be careful, as Byro mentions he is an extremely skilled fighter. However, they are interrupted, as the Infinity Clock is reconstructed by the parts, which unite. Erza then witnesses the appearance of the group Reborn Oración Seis.[219]
When Racer and Cobra attack Fairy Tail, Erza Requips into her Robe of Yūen armor and attempts to attack Racer, however, Racer attacks her with his Magic before she could. Erza then tries to attack Erigor, but is blown away with his Storm Magic. After their defeat with the new Oración Seis, Erza and the other Fairy Tail Mages are brought to Blue Pegasus Guild by Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki using Christina. Erza then thanks Master Bob for saving them. Later on, Erza listens as Lucy states that they have done the opposite for collecting the clock parts, and watches her cry while apologizing to them but cheers her up. While riding Christina, Erza and the other members of Team Natsu search for the source of the Infinite Clock's sound.[220]
Erza and the others return to the guild, still depressed that they weren't able to stop the Reborn Oración Seis from taking the Infinity Clock. She is present as the Thunder God Tribe returns and the guild tells them what happen. She later watches as Cana does a tarot reading to find the location of the Oración Seis and put the guild into groups to split up and find them. She is revealed to be with Evergreen, which starts a quarrel between the two until Macao states Max is also in the group.[221]
Erza, Evergreen and Max depart in search of the Reborn Oración Seis. While crossing a mountain, Erza bickers with Evergreen when the latter continues to complain over walking in high heels.[222] Erza, Evergreen and Max finish climbing the mountain to find Cobra at the top. The group try to attack him, with no success. Erza tries many tactics, still not touching Cobra, until she dons her Robe of Yūen. Despite almost landing a few hits, Cobra still appears to have the upper hand, the dark Mage continuously talking about Cubellios, much to Erza's confusion.[223]
Nonetheless, she continues to fight Cobra. She is almost attacked by his Sound Magic though thankfully Max steps in, saving her at the cost of his own safety. Erza rushes to Max when he collapses from his newly-gained injuries. Nearby, she overhears Cobra insulting them for their friendship and also his sadness at the thought of Cubellios. She tells him that he can overcome his heartache, which is a pain everyone has in their heart. He does not reply but soon leaves, as he remembered his goal from earlier. Erza Requips to her normal attire while she looks on at Cobra's leave.[224]
Later, when the Archaeology Society arrive, they present Erza with a giant hammer, claiming it can grant her the ability to seal away darkness.[225]
They watch as the Fiore Guards attempt to fire at the Infinity Clock using Lacrima cannons. Suddenly, they begin to experience similar effects from the Magical object; however, Erza is the only one without change. She wonders why and summons her new Magical Hammer, which she uses to hit everyone with. As she hits them, each one of them returns to normal within a few seconds. Later, when Kanaloa boards on Christina, Ichiya orders them to get on Zentopia and that he will handle this. Erza convinces her guildmates that this is the right choice and that Ichiya has survived worse than that. Erza's group later contacts Gildarts, via Warren's telepathy, and learns that the Archbishop is being mind controlled by Lapointe.[226]
After Erza's team finds Gildarts, Natsu and Laki, the Mages witness Lapointe's ultimate goal, shortly before he disappears, being another puppet used by Brain II. As the Legionnaires are determined to dispose of Lucy in order to stop Real Nightmare, the Fairy Tail Mages decide to divide into teams, with the team consisting of Erza, Natsu, Gray, Elfman, Gajeel and Coco being in charge of finding Lucy. Coco leads the group to the Infinity Castle, and when the group meets Cobra, Erza is the one to step up against him., as the other Mage says that she is the one he wants to dispose of first.[227]
As Erza begins her fight with Cobra, Sugarboy suddenly appears and attacks her, telling her that Byro's orders were to keep Fairy Tail away from the Infinity Clock. Erza explains to the Legionnaire that the circumstances have changed and that, right now, Oración Seis is Legion's enemy, but Sugarboy doubts her. Cobra soon gets rid of Sugarboy, and tells Erza that they can now continue their fight.[227]
Erza and Cobra then continue their fight with Erza unable to land a hit on Cobra. Erza tries many weapons and armors, but all with no luck. Their battle is taken outside when the two crash through the wall of the Infinity Clock, with Erza still unable to land a blow.[228]
As they fight, Cobra senses Erza's need to have him defeated to free Lucy, and tells her such a thing is impossible, as he has lost something in order to gain his powers, and therefore bears weight far greater than hers, strengthening him. Erza scolds him for using such power for evil and Cobra responds by stating that if he didn't he could never look Cubellios in the face again; Cobra prepares to use Poison Dragon's Roar, but Erza Requips to the weapon given to her by the Archaeological Society, cancelling the spell. Erza is then contacted telepathically by the Archbishop, who states that the Infinity Clock can be slowed if the chains linking it to the ground are broken, and Erza proceeds to destroy the chains around her, aiming at Cobra at the same time. However, Cobra surprises Erza and pins her down, but just before he can deliver a blow to defeat her he stands, distracted, claiming he can hear the voice of Cubellios. Using Cobra's slip in concentration to her advantage, Erza rises and smashes Cobra with her hammer, defeating him and sending him falling from the Clock.[229]
Erza, now destroying chains outside the Clock at the request of the Archbishop, asks Warren about the situation, to which he replies saying half the chains are still intact. She then continues to destroy the chains as Lucy is swallowed completely by the Infinity Clock. However, Lucy finds out that she can control Real Nightmare and uses it on Brain II, giving Natsu the chance to defeat him. They then learn from the group at the guild that Lucy can free herself, but will be shot around the world with the clock parts. Despite Erza being concerned for Lucy's safety, Lucy bravely decides to do so. Later, Erza and the others are saved from the Clock by Ichiya and Kanaloa, and together they find Lucy falling from the sky. Natsu then runs to catch her, and Erza returns with her friends to Fairy Tail, their adventure surrounding the Clock finally over.[230]
After the events around the Infinity Clock end Legion Corps comes to the guild to apologize and say goodbye to Erza and the others. They then head off on their life long mission to find the pieces of the Infinity Clock scattered around the world.[231]
Grand Magic Games arc
Erza and the other members of Fairy Tail go to the beach to train for the Grand Magic Games.[232] On the second day of training, Erza and co. are interrupted by Virgo, who tells everyone the Celestial Spirit World is in great danger and requires everyone's help. They are sent to the Spirit World, where they find out there is no trouble, but all of Lucy's Spirits had planned a party to celebrate everyone's return. After a day of celebrating, Virgo informs the gang that time runs different in the Spirit World than in Earth Land, thus they have lost almost the whole three months of training in the one day.[233]
Once they realize this, Erza and the others become depressed until the group is contacted by Jellal, Ultear, and Meredy. After a brief reunion, Ultear decides to increase Fairy Tail's Magic Power by unlocking their "Second Origin" with her improved Arc of Time.[234]
Erza and Jellal go off to talk privately, and she asks him if all of his memories have returned, with him confirming that they have. He tells her he's prepared to die if she wants to seek revenge for him killing their friend Simon, however Erza says she won't because Simon wouldn't have wanted that. When he says that he thinks death is the only way to truly redeem his sins, Erza slaps him and pulls on his collar, accidentally causing the two of them to fall off the rocky ledge they were sitting on and into a large flower field, with Jellal landing on top of her.
While on top of her, Jellal and Erza kiss. However, Jellal pushes her away and tells her that he can't because he has a fiancee. When Jellal, Ultear, and Meredy later take their leave, Erza sees them off.[235] She smiles and remarks to herself that Jellal's a clumsy liar, referring to the fact that she knew he lied about having a fiancee, but accepts his decision on their relationship.[236]
Later Erza along with Natsu, Lucy, Gray, Wendy, Happy and Carla arrive in Fiore's capital Crocus. After a brief meeting with the rest of the guild members that have arrived, Erza goes to the room provided for them to see if something is amiss.[237] Later, when Natsu, Gray, Lucy, and Happy return to the Honeybone Lodge, Erza scolds them for their lateness, but it is interrupted when Lisanna and Elfman walk in. The meeting is interrupted, however, when it is announced that the preliminary for the Grand Magic Games is about to begin. They are informed that in order to be in the games, they must be one of the first eight teams to go through the Sky Labyrinth. Erza and the others are worried because Wendy is nowhere to be seen, but Elfman decides to take her place and they set off. Eventually, by defeating other guilds and taking their maps of the Sky Labyrinth, they arrive at Domas Flau, but are informed that they are the last of the eight teams to make it.[238]
Erza and the others change into their team outfits before they head out to hear which teams made it out of the labyrinth before them. As the teams are introduced, they learn that Raven Tail has entered into the competition, and are angry when they learn that they are the ones who injured Wendy and Carla.[239] She is also shocked to learn that there is a second team from Fairy Tail in the running, consisting of Gajeel Redfox, Mirajane Strauss, Laxus Dreyar, Juvia Lockser, and Jellal Fernandes disguised as Mystogan. A few minutes later, after they hear the rules for the first event of the games, Gray decides to enter for them in that round.[240] When Gray loses the event and the crowd mocks him and Fairy Tail for it, Natsu comes to his defense, but Erza stops Natsu from acting rashly.[241] When the first battle of the day is chosen, Lucy vs. Flare Corona, Erza encourages Lucy to win.[242]
After Lucy's defeat by Flare, due to the outside help she received from a fellow Raven Tail member, Jellal and Jura eventually step up to fight. Jellal loses the match because Ultear intervenes because he was about to give away his identity accidentally.[243] After the guild's terrible first day, they go to a nearby bar and celebrate.[244] When a Mage from Erza's past, Bacchus, enters, the two talk briefly and he vows that they will settle their score for good. When Lucy asks Erza who he is, she replies that he is a Mage that she fought constantly in the past, but neither ever beat the other, much to Lucy, Natsu, and Gray's shock.[245]
When the second day's battle begins, Erza listens to and is moved by Toby's greatest secret, being subsequently angered to the point that she has to be held back when Kurohebi rips Toby's sock.[246] Later, she gives encouragement to Elfman when he has to fight Bacchus.[247] Erza also watches Mirajane and Jenny's fight and comments on Mirajane's Satan Soul: Sitri.
After the second day ends, Erza and Jellal meet under a bridge in Crocus. The two discuss the sudden disappearance of the strange Magic that was at the tournament every year. Jellal decides to inspect the organizers directly now and starts to leave, but not before Erza tells him not to overdo it.[248] As Erza walks back to her lodging, she is approached by a member of Mermaid Heel, who reveals herself to be Millianna.[249] Erza and Millianna talk about her joining a guild and Shô and Wally, who Millianna states are still traveling. Erza soon mentions Kagura, and compliments her on her strength. She then asks about the woman's sword, Archenemy, to which Millianna explains that Kagura will never unsheathe it until she faces the man who destroyed her life, Jellal Fernandes.[250] Millianna declares her hatred for Jellal as well for forcing her to remain a slave and for him killing Simon, under the assumption that Erza feels the same way. Erza can only guiltily look away in response.[251]
She is later seen gazing over Crocus from a high position, thinking about her recent conversation, when Gray joins her. When Gray asks her what's wrong, she changes the subject to what has been happening with him recently. After revealing that he escaped the whole "mess" with Juvia and Lyon, Erza encourages him to respond to Juvia's feelings, before turning back to go to bed at their lodgings.[252]
On the third day of the Grand Magic Games, Erza chooses herself to represent Team Fairy Tail A for the Day's event. The event, Pandemonium, consists of defeating monsters of different levels to earn points and progress. It starts with a drawn participant choosing how many monsters they will fight. Erza is drawn to go first and decrees the end of the game by defeating all 100 monsters alone, an unheard feat.[253]
After Millianna wins her fight against Semmes, Erza comments that she has improved and later looks at her, worried.[254] When the third day's 3rd battle is announced, Erza becomes shocked after knowing that Laxus' opponent, Alexei, is from Ivan's guild.[255] As soon as the match begins, Laxus is completely overwhelmed, something which shocks Erza. However, a few minutes into the fight, it is revealed that the match was fake and that Alexei was really Ivan Dreyar and that Laxus had defeated every member of Team Raven Tail. Erza comments on Lucy's kindness when Lucy says that Laxus didn't have to hurt Flare Corona as badly as he did.[256]
When the final battle of day three begins between her own team-mate Wendy and Chelia Blendy of Team Lamia Scale, Erza is seen smiling in acknowledgement of Wendy's heightened abilities after seeing the young girl cast Shattering Light: Sky Drill at her opponent.[257] However, when Chelia later stands up seemingly unharmed by the attack, Erza notes that Chelia is quite the opponent.[258] As their match continues, Erza is shocked at Wendy's determination to keep fighting until the end of the match.[259] After Wendy's and Chelia's match ends in a tie, Erza talks about how impressive the match was.[260]
After the third day of the Grand Magic Games ends, Erza heads out to a bar with the rest of Fairy Tail to celebrate. Lucy comments on her speedy recovery, which Erza puts down to Porlyusica's great healing skills.[261] Despite Natsu, Happy and Gray being told off for barrel surfing through the bar, Erza is quick to set a bad example by giving the game a shot as well, flipping out at the end of her ride.[262]
Later that night, Erza, Lucy and Wendy are approached by Levy, who tells them about a popular leisure center in Crocus. Deciding that they have to check it out, the guild head to the center straight away, and Erza, despite still having injuries from her participation in Pandemonium, decides to go too.[263] At first, she and Lucy decide to sunbathe, but soon become annoyed when the Trimens of Blue Pegasus appear and flirt with them. Not being able to stand their presence any longer, Erza proceeds to yell at each of them, though she can't find the words to scold Ichiya.[264] After leaving and walking around, Erza spots Jellal and questions why he is there, annoyed with him for his poor disguise.[265] The two begin to talk, though in the midst of their conversation, Ichiya -who is running dangerously beside the pool- trips over and flies in their direction. In a split second attempt to stop Ichiya from hitting Erza, Jellal forces the two of them down into the water, and though Erza is saved, she becomes embarrassed to see that Jellal groped her chest in the process, much to Jellal's embarrassment, though Erza says it was okay despite Jellal apologizing.[266] When Lyon and Gray later fight and freeze the pool, Natsu uses his Magic to melt the ice, causing a large explosion. Erza and Jellal are both sent flying, and Erza lands atop him, not being able to contain her shock at the destruction the guild has once again caused.[267]
On the fourth day of the Grand Magic Games, Erza cheers on Lucy on as the latter participates in the Naval Battle event.[268] When only Lucy and Team Sabertooth's Minerva are left, Erza notes that Minerva is able to create heat inside the water.[269] As Minerva starts to torture Lucy, Erza, along with Gray and Natsu, stands shocked as Minerva proudly proclaims Sabertooth's superiority, as her teammates smugly look upon the battle.[270]
Erza watches as Minerva comes out of the water and stops Gray and Natsu from fighting. She threatens Sabertooth, saying that they have made the enemies of the worst guild to anger. In the infirmary, after Lucy asks forgiveness for losing, Erza and Gray try to comfort her. Makarov arrives and announces that the administrators have told them to join both Teams together, which consists of Erza, Gray, Natsu, Laxus and Gajeel. Erza glares at Minerva when they see Team Sabertooth.[271]
Erza, after seeing Nichiya and Ichiya, standing next to each other, faints.[272] When Ichiya wins the battle against Bacchus and Rocker, she looks at him and is surprise with the battle's outcome.[273]
Before the battle of the Dragon Slayers begins, Erza, as well as her guildmates, tells Natsu and Gajeel to fight with everything they've got.[274] During the course of the battle, when Sting and Rogue enter Dragon Force, she recognizes the state from when Natsu ate the Etherion back at the Tower of Heaven. She is shocked by Sting's vastly-improved strength in such a state.[275] Later, when Natsu takes Gajeel away to fight Rogue and Sting alone, Erza smiles at the sight of Natsu overwhelming the Twin Dragons of Sabertooth with his attacks.[276] Her smile remains even after he has defeated them. Erza also hugs him, much to his displeasure.[277]
After hearing about Lucy's arrest by the Fiore Army, Erza reiterates what she heard and asks Makarov for his opinion on the matter.[278] While wondering about Lucy's arrest, Erza questions why the kingdom only arrested her and not the others while suggesting that they likely consider their actions justified. As Makarov gives his take on the matter, Erza listens in.[279] The next day, Erza arrives at the Domus Flau with the rest of Team Fairy Tail, ready for the final day of the games.[280] As the announcers explain the rules for the final day, Erza and the rest of the team listen in. When the rules explained, Erza tells her team that they have to win for the sake of Lucy. With everyone determined to win, they all join in a group cheer.[281] When the games start, the members of the other teams scatter but Erza and the rest of the team stay put, much to everyone's surprise even as battles rage.[282] Soon after multiple Mages are knocked out by opponents, Mavis explains that she presented them with a strategy for victory and gives them the command to go, at which point they rush into battle.[283]
Upon Mavis' command, Erza goes forward soon confronted by Rufus' Falling Stars spell. But, due to Mavis' plan she easily avoids it and proceeds forward. Soon, Erza crosses paths with Jenny Realight who she quickly defeats, gaining another point for Fairy Tail.[284]
Following Mavis' strategy, Erza searches for Minerva. While walking she hears a noise from behind her, turning around she finds Kagura lunging towards her. She draws her sword out attempting to block Kagura's attack as she is shocked by Mavis' prediction proving false. As the battle continues, Minerva suddenly joins in, shocking everyone.[285][286]
Erza boldly proclaims that she will not hold back against any of her opponents, later making a comment about Minerva's own self-confidence. Afterwards, the three women begin their battle; throughout the event, Erza mostly strikes with her swords, though she does manage to land a powerful kick upon Kagura's left cheek after being pushed aside by Minerva's Magic. Erza and Kagura are soon ensnared in Minerva's Magic where they are subsequently struck with a powerful spell that, despite its flashiness and very destructive nature, leaves the two Mages with moderate injuries. A pleasantly surprised Minerva then reveals to have captured Millianna sometime prior, shocking and infuriating Erza.[287]
As Erza continues to glare down Minerva, Kagura moves to grab her sword, threatening Minerva with her life if she does not immediately release Millianna. This seems to merely amuse Minerva further, the Sabertooth Mage tempting Kagura on in her threat. As Kagura charges, Erza remarks on her speed, only to suddenly find herself right in the range of Kagura's attack, Minerva having used her Magic to switch places with her. In a last second reflex, Erza throws up her sword, managing to just block Kagura's attack as Minerva calmly walks away from them. As she watches Minerva teleport Millianna away and promise to face the victor of her and Kagura's fight, Erza angrily points out the Sabertooth Mage's shamelessness, having interrupted their battle to merely pull such a stunt. Minerva though doesn't seem to care, stating that she is merely acting as a King and doing anything necessary to win. Annoyed, Erza once again demands Millianna's release, only to be shocked when Kagura suddenly attacks her, screaming for her to stop pretending to be Millianna's friend. Stunned, Erza watches as Minerva claims that the two have a lot to talk about and vanishes, commenting to Kagura that the Sabertooth woman has gotten the better of them both. Kagura, however, turns her steely gaze onto Erza, vowing to defeat her and then Minerva.[288]
As the two resume combat, Kagura delivers a strike with her Archenemy so strong that Erza is blown away despite blocking it. Immediately Requiping her Heaven's Wheel armor, Erza tries to counter using Pentagram Sword which Kagura evades by jumping, then switches to her "Strong Form" landing a clean blow on Erza, destroying the platform they are fighting at. As the two fall, Erza Requips her Adamantine Armor, but this proves to be ineffective as Kagura cuts through it, gravely wounding Erza with her "Slashing Form".[289]
With no time to waste, Erza Requips her Flight Armor, performing Sonic Claw to fight back, but Kagura's speed proves to be superior as she slashes her multiple times, knocking her down. As Erza continues to be overpowered by Kagura, she expresses her surprise that there is someone like Kagura and asks the latter if her strength comes from her hatred for Jellal, which earns Erza a kick from her opponent, sending her through several pillars. When Erza asks Kagura about what happened between her and Jellal, Kagura tells her that she is the little sister of Simon, someone who worked as a slave for Jellal just to be then killed by him. However, Erza corrects Kagura, saying that Simon died because of her weakness, making her the real murderer. Kagura is pushed over the edge, finally unsheathing her Archenemy and delivering a strike.[290]
However, Erza blocks the sword with her own and apologizes to Kagura, claiming that dying would be disrespectful to Simon and her comrades.[291] The two fight and Erza says it is fine if her hatred is the source of her strength, stating she has no intentions of trampling on her feelings but neither will acquiesce with them, before overpowering Kagura with a fast strike. Rubble begins to fall over Kagura, but Erza pushes her out of harm's way with her right foot getting stuck. The two then recognize each other from their time at Rosemary Village when Erza had saved Kagura, with the latter crying at the realization of who Erza was. Eventually Kagura removes the rubble from Erza, saying she needs time to process all the information and tries to admit defeat but is stabbed by Minerva who sadistically reminds to Erza her speech about Kings while bursting into an evil laughter, with Erza scowling at Minerva for her cruelty.[292] As her anger slowly starts to build up, Erza is asked to save Millianna by Kagura, immediately saying that she will. Then, Minerva unexpectedly releases Millianna. Erza hurries to her friend and discovers that her back is heavily slashed and bloodied. After hearing Minerva's words about it, this finally sends Erza into a rage.[293]
Despite her wounds from previously attempting to save Kagura, Erza manages to stand and face Minerva, however the Sabertooth woman quickly utilizes her Magic to grab her by the ankle and pick her up, throwing her through the air. As she smashes Erza through one of the pillars nearby, Minerva delightedly claims that she will deliver Erza's public execution.[294]
As Erza lies bloodied on the ground and attempting to stand up, Minerva remarks that her feet are far too injured, and that she will not be able to rise once more. Erza rebuts this, stating that she will be able to stand, as, when she is fighting a battle she cannot lose, she will get up as many times as necessary to defeat her opponent. Proving her words by standing, Erza glares angrily at Minerva, who comments that malice doesn't suit her, nor make her in any way scary. Continuing, Minerva uses her Magic to flick Erza back to the ground, explaining that with her Magic she can manipulate any space or territory, and that this Magic makes her the strongest Mage in Fiore's strongest guild. However, whilst speaking, Minerva fails to notice that Erza springing from the ground to strike her, Erza's summoned blades slicing through the Sabertooth woman's chest. Minerva tries to hit Erza back with her fists, but Erza dodges the blows and continues to slash, angering Minerva, who moves to cast another spell. Before she can though, a furious Erza willingly activates her Second Origin, Requipping into Nakagami Armor to continue the fight.[295]
An undeterred Minerva continues her attack, referring to Erza as "pathetic" and fires. However, Erza dissipates the blow, to Minerva's surprise. Erza tells a stunned Minerva that she's hurt too many people close to her and so she will deliver upon that herself. A frightened Minerva tells her to stop, to no avail as Erza takes her out and earns five points for her team.[296]
Soon after, Erza witnesses the Sabertooth symbol sent into the sky by Sting Eucliffe and heads off to fight him. Arriving with the rest of her teammates, she listens to Sting mock the group over their injuries and claims he can beat them all by himself. Hearing him state that he wants to fight and defeat all of them at once, Erza tells Sting that all of them will be his opponents, as he desires.[297] Erza stands with the rest of her team as Sting powers up to take them on. Even as Sting comes forth, Erza does not move. Ultimately, Sting concedes that he cannot win and surrenders the battle, giving a point to the team and winning the Grand Magic Games for Fairy Tail, to the happiness of the guild members as well as Erza.[298] Erza approaches Sting and asks why he didn't attack them and is told in response that he fought because he thought he could see Lector again, puzzling Erza. As Sting says he now feels he can no longer see Lector, Erza tells him he can as Millianna appears with the Exceed in hand, allowing Sting to be reunited with his companion, a reunion at which Erza smiles.[299]
Once their victory is announced to all, Erza stands with the rest of her guildmates as they are seen by the others around Crocus, who acknowledge their strength. Soon after, Erza asks whether anyone saw the signal flare Natsu was to use upon rescuing Lucy, to which nobody replies in the affirmative. Spurred by a discussion with the others, Sting asks why Natsu didn't participate in the final day, a question Erza avoids answering.[300]
Soon afterwards, the guilds are gathered in Central Square of Crocus to be addressed by the King. The King reveals the upcoming attack at the hands of 10,000 Dragons and requests that the guilds assist the kingdom in combating them. Erza, with the many other Mages, enthusiastically agrees to do so. As she begins wondering about Lucy's conditions after her capture, she is told that she is fine and that she is with the princess now. As the other Mages express interest in fighting, the King begins crying and thanks them all, ending his words with a verbal quirk which causes Erza and the rest to stare at him.[301] As the guilds prepare themselves for the upcoming battle, Erza is approached by Cana, who suggests her to take a bit more time to rest due to her wound, but Erza dismisses it and states that she will be fine.[302]
Later on, an alarming noise emits from the castle, to which Erza questions what it could be.[303] Suddenly, a wave-like assault originating from the location of the Eclipse Gate shreds through Crocus, catching Erza and the rest of Fairy Tail by surprise.[304] Unexpectedly, a Dragon fully made of flames, then appears in front of them. Claiming that they will experience "the flames of hell," Atlas Flame unleashes a giant wave of flames out of its mouth, causing Erza and the others to be thrown away.[305] However, everyone survives the attack and Erza then proposes to reorganize their stance. After Makarov's attack is proven to be ineffective, Atlas Flame attacks Erza and others one more time, claiming that they cannot defeat a Dragon as long as they are human.[306]
Afterwards, Future Rogue commands Motherglare to release eggs of Dragon-like monsters that instantly hatch and proceed attacking the Mages. Laxus then decides to battle Atlas Flame as one of the Dragon Slayers, supported by his Thunder God Tribe, while Erza and other Fairy Tail Mages attack the newly-hatched creatures.[307] While fighting them, Erza gets separated from the others. The monsters begin to overpower her and Erza notes to herself that her injury isn't healed yet, contrary to what she told Cana earlier. With her legs unable to move, Erza begins to give up as the monsters attack her. However, Jellal appears, blasting away the monsters with his Heavenly Body Magic and asking Erza if she needs help. That is when Millianna notices them, enraged to see Jellal again.[308]
As Millianna utters Jellal's name, Erza attempts to calm her down and tells her that she has already forgiven Jellal. Unable to accept that, Millianna asks Erza why she's covering for someone who killed Simon. She then yells out that she cannot forgive Jellal so she will kill him, however, Erza argues that such action won't change anything. That is when Ultear appears and takes all the blame on herself, much to Erza's surprise and Millianna's confusion. As Ultear takes her leave, Erza states that Ultear is also a victim because she was led down the wrong path from young age. When Jellal questions the twisted world they live in, Erza simply states that no matter what, they have to live on.[309] With Jellal's help, she is then seen walking away while holding a sword as a means of defense.[310] After the Dragons return to their time, Erza and Jellal are seen smiling at each other, delighted that everything is over.[311]
After the Dragon War, Erza and the rest of the Mages who helped in the fight are invited to Mercurius for a celebratory banquet. With her drink in hand, Erza greets Lucy and some of the others when they arrive in the ballroom, and later also finds and greets Kagura, asking if her wounds are okay. After recalling that a lot happened between them during the Games, Erza asks if Kagura will accept her as a friend, only to be surprised when Kagura blushes and asks if she could be her big sister instead. Glancing over her shoulder, Erza spots Millianna, who still seems to be wearing a glum expression. Asking her to cheer up, Erza pulls forth Happy to try and tempt Millanna to smile, though the Mermaid Heal Mage tries to ignore the cat until Erza also brings forward Carla and Pantherlily, whom Millanna happily attacks with her love. As Millianna hugs Happy, Erza asks him if he has seen Natsu, becoming a little concerned when the Happy replies that he hasn't spotted him anywhere.[312] Shortly after, Erza stands strong by her guild and asks Yukino to join them when the Celestial Spirit Mage is attacked by the other guilds, who all want her to accept their requests for membership. In the brawl that follow, Erza and Kagura lock horns, only to be stopped when Natsu enters the room dressed as the King, shocking them all into silence.[313]
Later, Erza and the rest of the team leave Crocus, riding a carriage to get back to Magnolia. Erza notes that it feels like they've stayed in Crocus for quite some time, even though it's been a little more than one week.[314] When they finally arrive to Magnolia, they are welcomed by a cheering crowd. Erza states that some of those people aren't even from Magnolia. She is then praised by some of them for her performance in the Games, which leaves her embarrassed. Erza is then seen smiling as Magnolia's Mayor reveals their reconstructed guild building.[315]
Sun Village arc
With the Fairy Tail guild receiving a lot of requests after their victory in Grand Magic Games, Erza, Wendy and Carla take on a job and play as actors at Rabian's performance, with Erza playing the character of Elie.[316] Later, much to her surprise, Lucy finds them at her place. Erza tells her that they want to share the sweets they got as a reward for their job. Afterwards, they wonder about Natsu and Gray's job, as they have been away for 3 days. Worried that something happened, they head to their location. When they arrive, they find an unconscious monster that Natsu and Gray were supposed to defeat and next to it, Natsu and Gray engaging in a fight. Erza attempts to stop them but much to the shock of everyone else, she gets punched to the face by Natsu and Gray. After witnessing Erza's enraged expression, they realize what they have done and then face Erza's wrath.[317]
Back to the guild, Erza and others find out that Natsu and Gray were working together due to the request demanding so. Erza states they should be thankful that the guild has so many requests again just as when another request arrives, asking Natsu and Gray to take care of it. Makarov then reveals that it's a request from Walrod Cken, ranked fourth in the Ten Wizard Saints. Hearing this, everyone is surprised and Erza wonders what happened.[318]
Walking to the location specified in Walrod's request, Erza comments on the breeze in the open mountain air, stating that it feels nice. She then turns to Natsu and Gray, who are still arguing, and demands that they stop as they are going to be meeting with someone of extremely high standing; upon hearing ask if she's right about her description of the Ten Wizard Saints, Erza tells her that she's correct and that Makarov and Jura are amongst them, Jellal and Jose were, and that the four highest ranked Saints are referred to as the Four Gods of Ishgar. Then when Erza hears Wendy ask what Ishgar is, she explains that it's the old name for their continent; Natsu and Gray continue bickering and drag Erza into the conversation, making Erza wonder if she's the one being insulted instead of them.[319]
Erza and the group then arrive at Walrod's house and they enter, with Erza explaining that they're from Fairy Tail; the group is silenced by Walrod, who is watering his plants, making Erza nervous. Erza's nervousness is quickly broken by Walrod's playful attitude, which leaves her taken aback. Erza then apologizes before speaking to Walrod and asks the man if he is who he is, which he states that he is, if he wasn't joking, leaving Erza dejected; he quickly states that he was joking about joking, leaving Erza annoyed. Erza then listens as Walrod talks about a village with an everlasting flame that was frozen solid and that he doesn't know how the disaster occurred, but adds that the villagers are alive; Walrod asks them to unfreeze the villagers and the flame, prompting Erza to say that someone of his power could easily solve the issue on by himself. She is quickly corrected by Walrod, who explains that the Ten Wizard Saints are not omnipotent and that countless Mages more powerful than himself exist, adding that if he were to leave the continent, he would be insignificant. Erza, however, is left awed after Walrod explains that those in a guild make up for what their partners' cannot do. She and the rest of Team Natsu then formally accept Walrod's request and the Ten Wizard Saint uses his Magic to send them the needed 2000 kilometers; Erza smiles at this, marveling at his Magic to control mother nature itself.[320][321]
Arriving at the destination, Erza notes to Wendy that it took no time at all, with the latter stating it was amazing. Looking at the village, Erza sees the frozen structures but does not see any frozen people, despite Walrod saying there would be some. However, everyone soon sees a large number of frozen giants and wonders whether the village belonged to them.[322] Seeing such large people, Erza is surprised. Gray and Natsu attempts to melt the ice but are unable to with their Magic. Suddenly, the group is spotted by three men, whose identity Erza asks for. The men reveal that they are treasure hunters from the Sylph Labyrinth Guild and as they repeat it, Erza tells them there's no need.[323] The men claim that they are going to get the flame which guards the village while Happy states that they are going to free the village, shocking the men who claim that such will oppose their plans, which Wendy and Lucy oppose. The men begin running, determined not to let themselves be stopped. Hearing that the flame is frozen, the men reveal that they have Moon Drip in a vial which they can use. Erza is surprised that they were able to liquidize it and, hearing Natsu state it can help save the villagers, gives chase with the rest of her guild.[324]
However, as the others begin to pursue the treasure hunters, Erza decides to stay behind in the village and look for further clues that could help them to identify the freezing Magic. Looking around at the frozen giants, she notes that each of them is holding a weapon, and that they are all facing one direction. Thinking this over, she concludes that perhaps the village was under attack before the spell was cast, and that the giants were protecting the Eternal Flame. Reasoning that the flame must be in the opposite direction of where the giants are heading due to their protecting it, Erza runs through the village and comes to a mountain. Convinced the flame will be at the top, Erza runs up the slope, only to be despaired when she finds nothing at all. Moving to look around some more and wondering what her real goal was in trying to find the flame, Erza suddenly spots her reflection in a nearby slick of ice, shocked when she sees that she has turned into a little kid.[325]
Surprised, Erza wonders if she has an armor that will fit her in her current size. She then tries to take a step but slips, falling down off the mountain. She realizes that she will have trouble moving, as her mind remembers her former physical appearance. Imagining the reactions of her friends, Erza insists that she absolutely must return to her original looks.[326]
Attempting to use her Magic to gauge how it may have potentially been altered, Erza releases a large amount of Magic power, but only succeeds in summoning a small sword. Commenting that both her physical and Magic abilities seem to have been lowered significantly, Erza is approached from behind by Minerva, who shocks the red-head when she reveals that she is part of the Dark Guild Succubus Eye. When Erza asks if Minerva has lost every ounce of pride as a Mage, Minerva ignores her and asks for a fight, stating that Erza stands no chance in her current form. Questioning if Minerva was the one who changed her, Erza prepares to defend herself, whilst Minerva, explaining that her partner is the one with the age-manipulating Magic, moves to begin her assault.[327]
Despite her attempts, fighting Minerva in her child-like body proves meaningless as she is effortlessly dominated by the Dark Mage, who ridicules her and tells her she fully intends to torment her as payback for what happened in the Grand Magic Games. As she is kicked in the stomach, Erza wonders about the spell which turned her into a child and wonders if she needs to defeat the caster in order to end its effects.[328]
However, Minerva has the upper hand and Erza finds herself lying on the ground. Minerva, pointing at Erza with a sword, states that killing her like this won't suffice and tells Erza that if she begs for her life, she might spare her, wanting to hear the screams of a 'shamed warrior'. Not complying with this, Erza states that Minerva has lost a pride as a Mage, claiming that Magic exists to be used for friends. Erza then tells Minerva that it's not too late to escape the darkness, but this just angers Minerva, who readies to give Erza the final blow. At that moment, Erza suddenly returns to her adult form and defends herself by striking Minerva with kicks. Minerva wonders if Doriate was defeated and then mocks Erza for her attire. The latter returns the favor as it's revealed that Erza grabbed part of Minerva's clothing, leaving her underwear exposed. As Minerva becomes even more enraged, Erza simply says that it wasn't intentional.[329]
Before too long though, Doriate once against spreads his Magic and turns Erza back into a child, much to her frustration. However, as Minerva mocks her, Erza points out that the Magic has affected her as well, much to her frustration.[330] During their battle, their actions are paused momentarily as the goings-on of a battle in the distance are noticed. Hearing Minerva inquire as to what it is, Erza states that is it Natsu.[331] Not long after, both Erza and Minerva notice the ice melting, with the former happy that her teammates managed to pull it off. The two female Mages are then approached by a now-awakened giant, who is surprised to see humans in their village. At that moment, Minerva decides to flee the battle, stating that they'll finish it later. Even though Erza attempts to talk it out one more time, Minerva states that her her darkness will corrupt the world, not the other way around.[332]
With the giants and the village saved, Erza takes the opportunity to question them as to what happened. The giants reveal that they attempted to fight but were frozen before they could do so. Lucy remembers Atlas Flame's words about an Ice Devil Slayer and suggests he froze Atlas Flame thinking him to be one. As Erza suggests that it was an accident, Gray butts in, telling them they still don't know his true intentions and that Doriate's warning about the gate to the netherworld still stands. Hearing this causes Erza to think about Tartarus, to which Gray suggests that they were behind the freezing of the village and had Succubus Eye guard it.[333] Soon after, Erza and the group spend the night partying with the giants, going on till sunrise.[334]
After completing Walrod's request, Erza and co. return to Walrod's home to deliver the news, with Erza noting how she is relieved that they completed the request without any further incidents. As Walrod prepares to deliver the payment for their completed task, he presents Erza and co. a potato, leaving them astonished. Later that night, Erza, Lucy and Wendy arrive at a secret hot spring, with Erza mentioning how it is expected of Walrod to know of such a secretive location. As the girls relax in the hot springs and enjoy their relaxing experience, Erza comments about the rejuvenation properties of the hot springs. As they bathe, their attention turns towards Natsu, Gray and Happy, whom are also relaxing in the hot springs.[335]
After Lucy and Wendy attempt to cover themselves up in embaressment from bathing with men, Erza asserts that it is nothing to lose their composure over, and recollects a time when she would bathe with both Natsu and Gray as children, with Erza subsequently offering Natsu to wash his back. After Walrod's revelation as being one of Fairy Tail's founders, Erza and co. express their astonishment. After a bit of correlation, Erza deduces and questions Walrod whether his reasoning of personally requesting Natsu and Gray is indeed relevant to Walrod's relation to the guild, to which Walrod affirms. As Walrod lovingly recollects Mavis' words and her morals, Erza and co. attentively listen on, with Walrod continuing on to sing a song once sung by Mavis. After Walrod's song, Erza requests Natsu to wash her own back, and Natsu astonishingly deduces that Walrod is older than their Guild Master, to which Erza chimes in that it was rude of Natsu to announce such. After Walrod provides his limited knowledge over Tartarus, Natsu expresses his rage and bursts out in anger, flailing his fists directly in front of him. However, forgetting that he was initially washing Erza's back, he looks down to see Erza, mortified by his assault and responds with aggression of her own.[336]
Tartarus arc
Back at the guild, Erza tells Makarov about Minerva enlisting in a Dark Guild. Makarov briefly comments the information, calling her a "brash and reckless lady" and then asks about Jiemma's whereabouts, just to learn that nothing is known of his location at the moment. Makarov proposes reporting this to the council, with Erza stating that she was thinking of contacting Sting, the acting master of Sabertooth, as well.[337] A little while later, Erza watches as Jet barges into the guild hall, claiming he has bad news.[338]
Magic and Abilities
Requip: The Knight (換装 ザ・ナイト Kansō Za Naito): Requip is Erza's signature form of Magic, over which she possesses great mastery. It is a type of Magic that allows her to swap weapons, armor and clothes at will. Her particular form of Requip is called The Knight. She is noted for her ability to Requip extremely fast and is the only sword Mage known to be capable of Requipping weapons and armor while fighting, something which made her and her immense strength well known throughout her place of residence, Magnolia Town, and throughout the entire Kingdom of Fiore, earning her the epithet "Titania".[339]
Sword Magic (剣の魔法 Ken no Mahō): In addition to her signature Magic, Requip, Erza is also an extremely talented user of Sword Magic. As the name implies, this is a type of Magic which revolves around the use of swords. Through the use of this Magic, Erza is capable of using her swords to perform different Magical attacks. This is usually done in combination with specific armors of hers, which can make her deadlier in close melee combat or, when combined with her. It is also shown in the anime that she can also combine different armors with other swords from other armors to either block or attack using deadlier force and mixing different elements together. Telekinesis, allows her to target opponents which are out of her physical range.[340]
- Demon Blade Crimson Sakura (妖刀紅桜 Yōtō Benisakura): A sword spell where Erza focuses all her Magic Power into the blade for maximum offense.[341]
Telekinesis (テレキネシス Terekineshisu): Erza is also a skilled user of Telekinesis. The first time she used this Magic, however, was accidental. When she was a child in the Tower of Heaven she used this Magic to levitate discarded weapons from the ground and launch them at her enemies, something which she did inadvertently, due to the shock caused by Rob's death.[342] Erza's most common use of Telekinesis comes with her Sword Magic, in which she can perform different attacks by controlling her swords remotely.
Master Swordsmanship Specialist: Erza possesses great mastery in swordsmanship and her skills in swordsmanship are of the highest caliber. Her offensive capabilities mainly come from her swordplay, which enables her to effectively utilize the weapons that her Requip provides, which includes swords, short swords, axes, lances and staffs (among others). Erza has shown great skill in utilizing the reverse-grip of swordsmanship as well as the normal grip. She is even capable of employing her swords effectively using her feet, by wielding their hilts between her hallux and second toe.[343] Her swordsmanship is enough for her to slash through Aria's presumably intangible airspaces,[344] and to deflect hundreds of needles which were shot at her by Evergreen with relative ease.[345] In addition, her sword slashes possess so much force behind them that they are able to slice through metal using only the air pressure from the swings.[346]
Keen Intellect: Erza has proven herself to be clever and to possess a thorough knowledge of the Magic world: she was able to figure out why the people of Galuna Island were changing into Demons (or thought they were) after only a brief period on the island,[347] and could work out the mechanics behind Midnight’s Reflector Magic after being struck by it only few times, something which got her praise from Jellal Fernandes.[348]
Expert Hand to Hand Combatant: Despite favoring the use of her various weapons, Erza has proven herself to be a skilled hand-to-hand combatant. Despite her being bound to a wall, she was able to easily knock Shô unconscious with a single kick.[349] She was also able to engage Erza Knightwalker in an unarmed fight after all of their weapons were shattered in their previous battle, attacking her counterpart with powerful punches and performing throws and takedowns to push her away.[350] She is also able to mix hand to hand combat with her swordsmanship while in the midst of battle.[351]
Enhanced Strength: In stark contrast with her slim and womanly figure, Erza possesses a very large amount of physical strength, having been repeatedly shown capable of lifting and dragging around objects many times her own size and weight,[352] most prominently due to her habit of carrying around vast amounts of luggage.[353] She was also able to send Midnight flying against a wall, several meters away from both of them, with a flick of her wrist.[354] In addition, her sword slashes possess so much force behind them that they are able to slice through metal using only the air pressure from the swings.[346]
Immense Endurance: Erza has been shown to possess a vast amount of physical endurance. After using up all of her Magic Power during her fight with Azuma by focusing it all in a single slash,[355] she was still able to join the battle against Hades, Requipping different armors and performing combo attacks with her teammates.[356] She was also able to fight and hold her own against a Mage of Jellal Fernandes's caliber after having fought and defeated Ikaruga, a very powerful assassin from Death's Head Caucus.
Immense Durability: Erza has also proven herself to have a vast amount of physical durability: with the aid of her Adamantine Armor, she was able to take the brunt of the Magical Convergent Cannon - Jupiter on herself,[357] and then go on to easily defeat Aria, an S-Class Mage,[358] and go toe-to-toe with Jose Porla, the Phantom Lord Guild Master and a former member of the Ten Wizard Saints, after receiving only a very brief amount of time for rest.[359] While clad in her Heaven's Wheel Armor, she was capable of taking on the counter effect of 200 Lacrima orbs from Laxus' Thunder Palace even though the effect of one of the orbs is enough to endanger someone's life.[360] and she was also able to survive the highly-damaging Terra Clamare twice, and still manage to continue to fight and defeat Azuma.[361] When Ultear Milkovich used her Arc of Time to open up Erza's "Second Origin", Erza showed no signs of being bothered at all, unlike her teammates, including Gray Fullbuster, Natsu Dragneel, and Juvia Lockser, who couldn't walk and writhed around on the floor in pain.[362] In addition, during the third day of the Grand Magic Games of X791, Erza was able to fight and defeat 100 powerful monsters, and, despite being heavily injured and bruised, she left the fight without showing any signs of fatigue, something which garnered her praise from hundreds of people including quite a few powerful Mages.[363] Even though one of the monsters was said to be so powerful that even a Ten Wizard Saint might not be able to defeat it.[364] Erza was also able to withstand Minerva's extremely destructive Yagdo Rigora spell with only slight damage.
Immense Reflexes: Erza possesses extremely sharp reflexes, and a high degree agility and speed. Despite her being severely battle worn, she was able to dodge a blast from Jose Porla while balancing herself on one hand.[365]
She was also able to skillfully and acrobatically dodge a barrage of Darkness Magic Spells from Jellal Fernandes,[366] and when he knocked her through the walls of the Tower of Heaven she launched herself off of a few small falling rocks back into the tower with ease.[367] When Evergreen shot a few rays at her as a surprise attack, Erza easily dodged the rays with a side jump.[368]
Immense Magic Power: As an S-Class Mage of the Fairy Tail Guild, Erza possesses a tremendous amount of Magic Power. Throughout many difficult battles Erza was able to Requip powerful armors in rapid succession without showing any signs of fatigue. She was also able to Requip her Heaven's Wheel Armor and over 200 swords after Requipping her Lightning Empress Armor without running out of Magic Power. When exerted, her Magic Power is red in color.[369]

This armor sports a breastplate now composed of a single piece of metal, decorated by curved lines and by a deformed version of Heart Kreuz's mark, with the cross' right arm extending to the right part of Erza's chest, and the added mark of Fairy Tail located under the cross itself, which is now lacking the brand's name.[108]

- Circle Sword (天輪・循環の剣, サークルソード, Tenrin Sākuru Sōdo): Erza requips swords and has them circle around her by utilizing the command, "Dance, My Blades". The swords then begin spinning rapidly around Erza and she sends them flying towards her opponent(s) in a disc formation at first and upon impact the swords separate and fly in different directions dealing great damage.[340]

Black Wing Armor (黒羽の鎧 Kureha no Yoroi): This armor is black with silver trimming that has silver crosses is several places. It has a revealing silver-edged breastplate and plates flanking her hips that reach down to her waist-guard. The waist-guard leaves the front of Erza’s body exposed, with her groin being covered by a dark imbuement. She has large plates guarding her legs. She has two wings that have black metal "arms" acting as the wings' leading structure, but the parts used to fly are composed of a membrane-like material. Erza's hair is tied in a ponytail.

The armor is completed by a headgear with the appearance of a pair of large metal ears. The armor works great in combination with the De-Malevo-Lance, a long and elaborated polearm sporting a cross just like the one on the armor.[380]
- Enhanced Strength: This armor increases Erza's strength in the form of her throwing power. It was first used when Erza threw her spear at the "moon" above Galuna Island.[381]
Adamantine Armor (金剛の鎧 Kongō no Yoroi): The Adamantine Armor is a large, blue and navy colored armor. The breastplate is composed of different plates joined together, with four, prominent tube-like ornaments on the front, right above her breasts, below the high armored collar. The shoulder pads are very large and sport prominent plates shaped like spikes, protruding from a far darker part which composes the base of the structure. The armor is completed by a helmet which covers the top and the sides of Erza’s face, leaving the back part of her head exposed, and sporting prominent spikes jutting outwards.
- Immense Defense: This armor is the ultimate, high-level defensive stance. While wearing it, Erza is able to withstand the Magic beam fired by Phantom Lord's Magical Convergent Cannon - Jupiter. - Adamantine Barrier: While wearing this armor, Erza gains the ability to create a powerful Magic Barrier by combining her two shields together, which can even withstand spells such as the Jupiter Cannon.[383]
- Flight: While wearing this armor, Erza gains the ability to fly but only for short distances.[383]
Purgatory Armor (煉獄の鎧 Rengoku no Yoroi): The Purgatory is a black armor that is covered in spikes. When using this armor, Erza’s hair becomes styled in very prominent spikes pointing outwards in every direction, with her right eye being covered by it and a devilish shadow obscuring the upper part of her face. This is one of Erza's most powerful armors, before her fight with Ikaruga she claimed that "None had seen the armor and lived to tell the tale." Its true power is not seen, however, as it was destroyed almost instantly by Ikaruga.[384]
Lightning Empress Armor (雷帝の鎧 Raitei no Yoroi): This armor is golden and light bluish in color. The breastplate is decorated by golden trimmings, and has thin plates going up to surround Erza’s neck. When using this armor, Erza’s head gets adorned by a band with two ribbons on it, and her hair gets styled in a long braid. Also, the armor’s weapon is a long spear, with a very large blade and a decorated circle resembling a shield attaching it to the shaft, which is adorned by a large ribbon.

- Immense Speed: This armor increases Erza's speed dramatically, to the point where she could match Erza Knightwalker's speed while the latter was using Silfarion.[387] She was also able to keep up with Racer despite being under the effects of his Slowing Magic.[388]

- Elastic Properties: This armor is elasticated, something which prevented Midnight’s Reflector Magic from securely binding Erza or strangling her using it.[391]
Morning Star Armor (明星の鎧 Myōjō no Yoroi): This armor, which seems to be mainly composed of a leather-like material, sports many feather-shaped decorations, including the short cape, the pauldrons protruding from under it, and the cloth circling Erza’s waist, held up by a simple belt on the front. Her arms are heavily armored as well. In this outfit, Erza’s hair is styled in tangled buns on top of her head, and she’s armed with a pair of simple swords with cross-shaped hand-guards, getting larger near the edges, and blades which seem to lack the standard cutting edges.
- Photon Slicer (明星・光粒子の剣 Myōjō: Foton Suraisā): By pointing the twin swords towards her opponent, Erza is capable of releasing a large blast to them.[392]
Armadura Fairy (妖精の鎧 Arumadura Fearī): The strongest armor as declared by her counterpart Erza Knightwalker. This armor has the name of her guild to symbolize her pride of being a member of Fairy Tail. It’s a pink armor with a simple breastplate joined to the collar. The armor has many wing shaped decorations. The armor’s weapons of choice are a pair of identical swords, sporting large and decorated hand-guards reminiscent each of a pair of wings, and with the blades protruding near the hilts to house additional decorative motifs.
- Fairy Piercing Sword: Erza charges her swords with energy and hits the target with a powerful lunge. This attack was strong enough to break Knightwalker's strongest spear, Ravelt, shattering an entire island in the process.[393] (Unnamed)
Sea Empress Armor (海王の鎧 Kaiō no Yoroi): This armor is green in color with bluish parts. The breastplate, which barely covers Erza’s breast, leaving her belly and her back visible, somehow resembles seaweed, and has some thin chains hanging from it over Erza’s exposed parts, with a pair siding her breasts and another the belly; a fifth chain is visible around her neck, which is guarded by the large collar. The armor is completed by a headgear, with a large metal part covering her forehead, bearing a whirl-shaped wave on it, and large fin-shaped protrusions siding her head. The armor comes equipped with a long sword which seems to be made of crystal, with many small crystals jutting out in every direction from the hand-guard.
- Water Resistance: According to Lisanna, this armor nullifies water attacks. It has been shown to be able to withstand Juvia's water attacks easily.[394]
- Water Magic (水の魔法 Mizu no Mahō): This armor allows Erza to charge her sword with water and release powerful whirlpools against her opponent.[395]
- Water Slash: While in the Sea Empress Armor, the user charges the blade of the sword with water and then attacks the target with water.[395]
Seduction Armor (誘惑の鎧 Yūwaku no Yoroi): Erza’s most revealing armor, which is more like an extremely daring maid outfit. It’s composed of a long light apron, tied behind Erza's neck and back, worn over her bare chest, and thus revealing much of her breasts’ sides, paired with dark panties, exposing much of her buttocks, and long stockings, reaching up to the middle parts of her thighs. There are no shoes, and Erza's head is adorned by a maid hat. The only visible armored parts are the gauntlets, which extend up to the middle parts of Erza's biceps, where ribbons are tied around her arms, and sport heart-shaped elbow guards. The armor comes equipped with a simple sword which bears a writing on the blade, this being "Come on Boy". The armor's effects, if any, are unknown.[396]
Nakagami Armor (天一神の鎧 Nakagami no Yoroi): A set of armor Erza had the ability to don once she released her Second Origin. The Nakagami Armor has not been worn for over ten years, as it consumes vast amounts of Magic Power to utilize.[397] Anyone who is able to wear the armor will be able to bend the laws of Magic.[398] The armor is composed of a short revealing robe that is tied together with an intricate ribbon at the waist. The armor features large pauldrons over each shoulder, bearing the image of a lion with an open mouth, and decorated greaves that match the motif of the armor. The entire set is complemented with a rhombus-shaped tiara and a large sash which loops above her head with the ends hanging out towards the ground with a bead on each end. The armor comes equipped with a large halberd possessing a circular hand-guard at its center.
- Nakagami Starlight (中一神・星彩 Nakagami Seisai): A spell utilized in conjunction with her halberd to swiftly dismantle the opponent with swift, brute force.[399]
Farewell Fairy Tail Armor: It's breastplate is fairly plain, with the waist-guard attached to it being similar to the one in Erza’s second Heart Kreuz Armor, composed of simply two hanging plates, paired with a ruffled cloth sprouting from under it over some chainmail; all of which surmount a long skirt, reaching down to Erza’s knees and covering the rather featureless greaves. The gauntlets, covering the entirety of her arms, are similarly unadorned, with only her pauldrons, composed of overlapping plates, having some decorations over the upper plates, taking the form of wings. On the other hand, the long spear which comes with the armor sports intricate decorations on the shaft and the massive head, together with a flag bearing Fairy Tail’s symbol, plus what looks like a laurel wreath, tied to it by two slim ribbons. The anime design of this armor differs from the manga. Erza was seen donning this armor in order to bid farewell to her friends from the Tower of Heaven before their departure.[400]
Artificial Eye: While enslaved as a child to build the Tower of Heaven, Erza lost her right eye during a punishment for an escape attempt. After she joined Fairy Tail, Makarov took her to see Porlyusica, who created an artificial eye for her.[401] Due to the eye's artificial nature, Erza couldn't cry out of it and it is unaffected by Illusion Magic or Stone Eyes Magic.[402]
Holy Hammer: During the Key of the Starry Sky arc, Erza receives this ancient weapon from Jean-Luc Neville, who discovered it during the archaeological investigation that unearthed part of the Infinity Clock.[403] The hammer is longer than Erza is tall with a long black handle in a zigzag shape. The head consists of a series of gray cylindrical sections, the frontal one being larger than the rest, with light brown plating on its front. On the front of the hammerhead is the emblem of the Zentopia Church on a white circular background. Said to keep evil at bay, the hammer protects its wielder from the effects of Real Nightmare and can dispel the effects from others.[404] When used against Cobra, it leaves wounds of light on the arm it struck.[405] It is also capable of breaking the chains of the Infinity Castle with ease.[406] During the Pandemonium event, it was shown to be useful for defense as well.[407]
Sacred Arrow: During Fairy Tail: Priestess of the Phoenix, Makarov Dreyar gave Erza this ancient magical weapon in order to defeat the Phoenix. The arrow has a triangular arrowhead, consisting of a pointed shaft with three fins behind it, which glows blue and two white fletchings at the end of its shaft. In the past, Kalard forged this weapon in order to destroy the magic protecting the Phoenix Stone. As such, it is imbued with powerful Dispelling Magic.[408]

Main article: Natsu Dragneel Erza and Natsu Dragneel are guildmates and teammates who share a very strong bond. When Natsu described Erza to Lucy, he described her as a scary, omnipotent person. And, despite not saying it, he was afraid of her.[409] Natsu greatly admires Erza due to her power, bravery, and strength. He loves to battle her to see who's the stronger Mage, although he is always effortlessly defeated. Erza also believes that Natsu will be able to surpass her one day by reaching the full potential of his destructive Magic.[410] Their relationship is friendly but can get very competitive due to Natsu's constant challenging.[411] Erza and Natsu have known each other since childhood and are very close. And, in their younger years, they even bathed together, along with Gray Fullbuster.[412] The two of them care deeply for each other, and would protect each other even if it meant sacrificing their own life. Erza acts as a peacemaker when Gray and Natsu fight, although she usually maintains the peace with violent acts towards them. Fear of her has even caused Natsu to start behaving like Happy, copying Happy's trademark: "Aye".[413] Natsu's affection towards Erza was enough for him to disguise himself as an armored Mage to prevent her from going to prison due to the great amount of damages she caused during her missions.[414] When they are put in cell for only one day as a result, Erza admits she was kind of happy that Natsu came to help her.[415] Natsu was enraged to see that, due to Jellal, Erza was crying as if she was weak. Seeing her tears prompted Natsu to knock her unconscious, promising that her nightmare would be terminated once she would woke up.[416] With this lionhearted vehemence, Natsu succeeded in defeating Jellal, part of the Ten Wizard Saints, again showing that he would destroy all hindrances making Erza helpless.[417] Natsu and Erza share the same strong feelings towards their guildmates. In the Tower of Heaven arc, Natsu told Erza that, even if he does not know much about her past, he is the same as her; a world without his friends would be impossible. He also told her to never forsake her life again but instead to live on for his fellow friends.[418] Erza also has an immense trust in Natsu. This is shown when she trusts Natsu to defeat Laxus Dreyar, who is clearly stronger than Natsu, while she left to destroy the Lacrima from the Lightning Dragon Slayer's Thunder Palace spell. She promised Natsu that she would return alive, not losing the life that Natsu once saved.[419] Main article: Lucy Heartfilia Lucy Heartfilia and Erza are both teammates and guildmates that share a very close relationship. Lucy admires Erza's strength and beauty and considers Erza a role model. The two care for each other deeply and will do anything to protect one another. During the incident with Phantom Lord, Erza, along with all the other members of Fairy Tail fought Phantom Lord for Lucy's sake and refused to give up Lucy even if they were told they would be spared in return for her being given up.[420] Similarly, Lucy, along with a few others, entered the Tower of Heaven and fought Jellal and his minions to rescue Erza when she was kidnapped by her former friends. Erza also seems to take interest in Lucy's undergarments[13] as well as her other clothing and looks to Lucy for information on the latest fashion. When she considered donning her Seduction Armor against Azuma her only worry was what Lucy would think, and during the Magic Games, Lucy complains that Erza has a habit of climbing into her bed in their shared quarters.[421] Main article: Happy Just like the majority of the Fairy Tail members, Happy respects Erza and acknowledges her and believes that her Magic is extremely powerful,[422] even to the point of betting money on her to win a match against his partner, Natsu Dragneel.[423] However, because of Erza's power, he fears her, as shown when Erza arrived at Galuna Island to bring back the members of Team Natsu after they stole an S-class mission from the guild's second floor. When Happy was looking for Lucy, and saw that Erza had come to the island, he instantly tried to flee but his efforts were in vain as Erza easily captured him and tied him up alongside Lucy forcing them to help her find Natsu.[424][425] Erza values the relationship she shares with all the members of Fairy Tail, even to the point of risking her own life, as showed when she protected them from Phantom Lord's attack,[426] and when she fought Azuma for the sake of her friend's life.[427] Happy also treasures his relationship with Erza, demonstrated when he helped the members of his team, and Juvia Lockser, and Jellal Fernandes.[428]
Main article: Gajeel Redfox Like the rest of Fairy Tail, Erza expressed her doubts when she realized that Gajeel had been aggregated into their guild by Makarov himself, especially considering his past involvement during the Fairy Tail-Phantom Lord Guild War. However, she was willing to set them aside somewhat since it was her guild master's decision to have the former Phantom Lord member as a part of Fairy Tail. But she insisted that Gajeel must be kept under constant surveillance, to which Makarov agreed.[429] She does seem to genuinely trust Gajeel, as seen during their escape from Edolas, where she entrusted Gajeel the task of reverting everybody in Fairy Tail that were converted into Lacrima, back to their original states.[153] However, this did not stop her from preventing Gajeel from being chosen to be a contestant in the S-Class Mage Promotion Trials.[430] Main article: Gray Fullbuster Erza and Gray have known each other for many years, ever since Erza joined Fairy Tail.[22] Their relationship is similar to the one between Erza and Natsu: Gray is shown to be afraid of the S-Class Mage to a degree, with a mere scolding from her being enough for him and Natsu to stop any argument or skirmish they might be having.[431] In spite of this, the two of them get along very well, being part of the same team,[432] as well as great friends, which, in their childhood, were close enough to bath together alongside Natsu.[412] Unlike Natsu, the more level-headed Gray isn't so prone to pick a fight with Erza, not seeing her as a rival.[433] Initially, a young Gray approached Erza boldly, nagging her for always wearing armor and subsequently attacking her, only to be defeated by the girl. Having subsequently met her crying alone away from the guild, and realizing that her armor acted as an "emotional protection" of sort for the slave girl who had been abandoned, Gray befriended her, developing the conviction that Erza needs to be in Fairy Tail, with her comrades, in order to give up her armor and not cry. During the events of Galuna Island, when Erza wanted her teammates to return to the guild in spite of their mission still going, Gray stated that he was disappointed by her, not backing off even before her sword, and insisting on finishing their task; something which eventually convinced Erza to help them out.[434] Just like Natsu, he was genuinely concerned for Erza's well-being when the latter was to be used as a sacrifice for Zeref's resurrection in the Tower of Heaven, assaulting and angrily defeating Fukuro, who was standing on his way.[435] Main article: Wendy Marvell Wendy Marvell is a guildmate and a close friend of Erza. It was Erza who invited Wendy to join Fairy Tail after seeing Wendy's sorrow after it was revealed that the Cait Shelter Mages were illusions created by Roubaul.[436] When Wendy joined Fairy Tail, Erza bought a cake for Wendy to welcome her. Erza was also worried when she heard that Wendy went on her first big mission and Erza decided to check on her ensuring her safety.[148] Erza has been known to compete with Wendy somewhat though. When Wendy was healing the injured on Tenrou Island, Erza took that as a challenge and she also started "healing" the boys with sad Wendy saying that she had so many patients due to her big chest.[437] Main article: Mirajane Strauss Erza and Mirajane are two guildmates that share a very friendly relationship. In their younger years, Erza and Mirajane were rivals. The two fought constantly in a fashion very similar to the way Natsu Dragneel and Gray Fullbuster fight in present day.[438] Mirajane disliked Erza, and didn't want Elfman and Lisanna associating with her or anyone she considered to be on Erza's "team".[439] However, their rivalry ended abruptly when Lisanna, Mirajane's sister, supposedly died. Mirajane's personality changed completely and she became kind and ceased her feud with Erza.
Main article: Makarov Dreyar Erza possesses the utmost respect for Fairy Tail's Guild Master Makarov Dreyar. It was Makarov who had Porlyusica create an artificial eye for Erza after the girl lost her right one in the Tower of Heaven.[440] When the man was caught off-guard and heavily injured by Phantom Lord's Aria while Fairy Tail was assaulting the latter guild's building, Erza was shown crying in sadness and disbelief, subsequently ordering her fellow guildmates to retreat in order to treat the Master;[441] his appearance during her battle with Jose Porla, which saved her from certain defeat, also left her in tears of joy.[442] When Makarov isn't around, Erza is usually the one looking after her fellow guildmates in his place, being notably more strict and severe than him, at least initially.[443] Main article: Pantherlily After Pantherlily got sent to Earth Land, he was invited to Fairy Tail.[444][445] There, Pantherlily is surprised how noisy everyone is and finds it hard to believe they all have Magic Power inside them. Erza explains that's how Mages are in Earth Land. She also points out that the Magic isn't important, but the hearts and people who wield it. Pantherlily tells Erza that it's comforting to see a familiar face like hers even though she's not the Erza he knew.[446] Main article: Rob Erza and Rob met during their enslavement at the Tower of Heaven.[447] Rob believed that freedom resided deep inside the human heart and he was the one to teach Erza the very meaning of Magic and how to tame it. He believed that, like freedom, Magic also dwelt in the heart. His colloquy about Magic inspired Erza to become a Mage and she told Rob that she would take him away from the hell they lived in.[21] During the revolt, Rob shielded Erza from an attack from the dark cult resulting in his death.[448] Erza, enraged and sorrowed by his death, awakened her true Magic and defeated all the guards at once.[449] Which demonstrated just how close Rob was to Erza's heart and it was thanks to Rob that Erza came to Fairy Tail where Rob was once a trusted Mage. Thus, he passed his legacy to Erza.[450] Main article: Laxus Dreyar Laxus, Makarov's grandson and a fellow S-Class Mage from Fairy Tail, seems to have always looked down on Erza, considering himself on a whole different level than her.[451] While annoyed by this and by his continuous thrusts against their comrades, which he considers "weaklings",[452] Erza doesn't think of Laxus as an evil person, having described him as merely " a little awkward" when encouraging Wendy Marvell to introduce herself to him.[453] Erza also didn't try stopping Laxus from seeing the injured Makarov after all the troubles he had caused Fairy Tail during the events of the Harvest Festival,[454] and was glad to see him greeting Natsu.[455] She, like the rest of the guild, bid Laxus a warm farewell after the latter was excommunicated for his actions during the Festival;[456] she also appeared glad to see him back on Tenrou Island.[457] Much like the rest of Team Natsu, she's shown to admire Laxus' power.[458]
Main article: Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki Ichiya believes himself to be a womanizer and he has his eyes set on Erza. However, Erza is completely disgusted by Ichiya. Erza comically shivers whenever she sees Ichiya, who is always trying to get uncomfortably close to her to smell her 'parfum', as seen at the rendezvous point for the mission to annihilate Oración Seis. As Ichiya approached Erza, Erza retaliated with a powerful punch and he landed on Lyon.[459] Despite this, Erza recognizes Ichiya as one of the strongest Mage of Blue Pegasus.[460] Main article: Bacchus Not much is known of the relationship Erza and Bacchus share. However, it was revealed that while on jobs for their respective guilds in the past, Bacchus and Fairy Tail's S-Class Mage Erza have fought many times. But neither ever defeated the other, so their score has never been settled.[461] Main article: Jellal Fernandes Jellal and Erza have been friends for a long time. They first met in the Tower of Heaven, back when it was being constructed. During this time, Jellal gave Erza her last name.[462] Jellal cared deeply for her, to the point of changing places with her when she was about to admit to a crime that she didn't commit.[463] However, when Erza went to save him from the guards who captured him, he, having been brainwashed already, attacked her and exiled her from the Tower of Heaven, making everyone think she betrayed them.[464][465] Eight years later, Jellal tries to sacrifice her to "revive" Zeref and claimed that he loved her once as he forcefully pushed her towards the Lacrima crystal that he planned to kill her in. However, he was stopped by Natsu.[466][467] After his defeat, Erza hears his voice saying she had become strong.[468] Though later, Erza told Lucy that what she thought that possibly Jellal was responsible for stopping the tower from destroying both her and Natsu since at that moment Natsu had defeated him; he was freed from the spirit of Zeref and returned to his old, kind self and that he fused with Etherion in Erza's place and guided the Magic up to the sky.[469] Later, during the conflict with Oración Seis, he was revived by Wendy,[470] and the only thing he can remember is Erza's name.[471] Upon hearing all the bad things he did and the pain he caused Erza, Jellal chose to cast a self-destruct spell on his body to rid Erza from all the pain and sadness he’s caused her. However, Erza managed to convince him to live to atone for his sins and he chooses to fight together with her. After defeating Nirvana, Jellal and Erza talk in private and Jellal confesses his fears of the darkness inside him to resurface, but Erza says that even though that happens she will be there for him.[472] During her fight with Azuma, she would hear Jellal's voice telling her to not give up. This would help give her the strength to stand up and eventually defeat Azuma.[473] When Erza and Jellal meet in X791, after the disappearance of Tenrou Island and the Tenrou Team, they talk about Jellal regaining his memories and different things he did in his possessed days,[474] and eventually, while thinking about all the moments they had over the years, they kiss. However, Jellal pushes her away because he still believes that he should punish himself for his past actions, and he doesn't believe he deserves to be with someone who "walks in the light". Erza, however, is happy that things worked out that way nonetheless.[475]
Main article: Azuma Azuma, a member of the elite team Seven Kin of Purgatory from the Dark Guild Grimoire Heart, has a different view of battle than Erza, thinking of it as an entertainment of sort, whereas Erza made claim that she only needs the power to protect her comrades.[476] In spite of those different opinions, during the course of their battle, Azuma gained Erza's respect,[477] at the same time showing his own respect to both the woman and her guild.[478] Following his defeat, he was willing to respect the promise he had made to Erza, at the same time warning her about Ultear Milkovich, and apologizing for what the latter one had done to Jellal Fernandes, a person dear to Erza.[479] Main article: Millianna Millianna is another childhood friend of Erza, and, like her, a slave girl, working for the construction of the Tower of Heaven,[19] who used to be part of the small group led by Jellal Fernandes.[480] Believing that Erza had betrayed them, Millianna took part in her kidnapping, restraining Erza's comrade Lucy Heartfilia in the process.[481] Following the revelation of Erza's innocence and their escape from the Tower, Millianna apologized to her for what she had done.[482] Later on, when she tried to leave Erza in the night alongside Wally and Shô, regretting her actions and not wanting to upset her friend with memories of their past, Erza bid farewell to the three of them with a ceremony typical to Fairy Tail, complete with fireworks set up by the rest of Team Natsu. Millianna was deeply struck by such action, shedding tears of joy as she left.[483] After seven years, Erza and Millianna were reunited as members of two of the eight competing guilds in the Grand Magic Games. Millianna was planning on revealing herself after the competition but her longing for her lost friend made this difficult, prompting her to reveal herself after the second day and causing the two to have a tearful reunion.[484] However, Erza was very worried about Millianna stating her hatred towards Jellal and her desire to kill him, something Erza didn't agree with.[485] During the battle s against the invading Dragons, a wounded Erza was helped by Jellal and the two were soon spotted by Millianna.[486] As the young Mage's face grew visbly angry from seeing the man she hated, Erza put herself in the issue, telling Millianna she had forgiven Jellal. Arguing that hating Jellal wouldn't undo the bad things he had done, the reunion is soon interrupted by Ultear, who reveals her actions where the true cause of Millianna's suffering before walking off. With her gone, the three began thinking about the things wrong in the world.[309] After the defeat of the Dragons, Erza and Millianna both attended a celebratory ball held by the king in his castle. While there, Erza noticed Millianna's sad face and, wanting to see her friend smile, presented her with Happy. Seeing this didn't work, Eza subsequently gave her Carla and Pantherlily as well, making her sad face go away.[487] Main article: Kagura Mikazuchi Kagura Mikazuchi and Erza met originally when they were in Rosemary Village and during when a group of followers led by Zeref attempted to kidnap children, Erza saved a scared Kagura from being captured.[488] However, neither Erza or Kagura would recall each other till the Grand Magic Games, which Erza showed interest in fighting her while Kagura viewed her as a means to get to Jellal, knowing of her closeness with her. However, Kagura's interest in Erza turned into fueling rage after discovering Jellal being apart of Fairy Tail (as Mystogan).[489] During their battle on the final day of the Grand Magic Games, Kagura brutally assaulted Erza.[490] Due to her hatred towards Jellal, Erza's mention of his name enraged her. As Erza tried to reason with her and not to drag Millianna in with her hatred, Kagura rebuked her, stating it was Millianna's free will. Once Kagura revealed her hatred was due to her being Simon's sister, the man whom Jellal killed, Erza stated it was her fault for being weak at the time of his death.[491] Hearing this, Kagura, enraged at Erza and over her still defending Jellal, unsheathed her Archenemy and struck Erza, but the latter defended herself, stating her life was entrusted to her by Rob, Simon and her friends and she wouldn't let her kill her. With her resolve, Erza turned the tables on Kagura and struck her down. However, as a boulder almost crushed Kagura, Erza pushed her out of the way and saved her. Erza then revealed their past and how she saved her, and how Simon always talked about her. Kagura burst into tears and, having been moved by Erza's kindness and likely feeling guilty for hurting Erza, helped move the boulder off her and states she's still confused and needs to process the information she received, and just as she admits defeat, Minerva stabs her from behind, enraging Erza due to her dirty tactics.[492] However, once Minerva was beaten and the Grand Magic Games were over, Erza approached Kagura during a celebratory ball held at Mercurius by the King of Fiore. Both asking about the other's wounds from the battle, Erza shows her willingness to forge a good relationship with her, stating that they're from the same village and should be friends. However, Kagura stated that the term "sister" was better for the two of them, causing Erza to blush and push Kagura into her bosom, happily referring to her as "cute".[493]
Main article: Mystogan Mystogan and Erza are former guild mates. Mystogan constantly wore a mask and used Sleep Magic to put the Mages of the guild asleep while he was visiting for Erza's sake since,[494] due to the fact that he was the Edolas counterpart of Jellal Fernandes, he was the spitting image of Jellal.[495] Jellal was Erza's childhood friend who,[20] due to a series of events, was turned evil by the influence of Ultear Milkovich,[496] and Mystogan knew that Erza having to see Jellal's face would be painful for her. However, during Mystogan's battle with Laxus Dreyar, Erza and Natsu barged in and saw Mystogan's face when his mask was knocked off. He explained to Erza that he was not the Jellal that she knew, but he didn't go into more detail than that.[497] Main article: Erza Knightwalker Erza's Edolas counterpart was initially shown to possess a personality radically different from her, being an enemy to Edolas' Fairy Tail and having no concern for human lives,[498] something which placed the two of them at odds, prompting them to engage in brutal confrontations.[499] The philosophies of the two clashed during their battle, and Knightwalker was eventually convinced of the value of human lives, giving up on her wish to use the people from Earth Land to gain more Magic Power for Edolas.[500] While Erza was being sucked back to Earth Land by Anima, the two red-haired knights were shown willing to bid a fond farewell to each other.[167]
Main article: Cancer Despite the fact that the two have not interacted much at all, Cancer is, for some reason, infatuated with Erza. He has been since the first time he met the young Mage. On that day, he was summoned by the owner of his key, Lucy Heartfilia, during their fight with some of Lyon Vastia's subordinates, and before fighting, he presented Erza with a bouquet of roses.[501]
Main article: Simon Simon and Erza have a very close relationship. They were both slaves who spent time together, and Simon developed deep feelings for her.[23] Simon was at first very upfront about his feelings. However, when Erza started the slave revolt at the tower, Simon was confused about how Erza truly felt about him. So he asked her if she liked Jellal in the middle of the arduous battle. Just when he was about reveal his true feelings to her, he got part of his jaw shot and he was unable to tell her.[502] Even though Jellal declared Erza as a traitor when she was forced to leave her friends behind, Simon was able to see through his lies, as he knew Erza too well to think she would betray them.[503] This shows the mutual and strong trust that Simon has towards Erza. Simon also knew how Erza felt when it came to Jellal, and was willing to forsake his life in final battle at the tower. As he shielded Erza from Jellal destructive Altairis, he dies, and tells of his love towards Erza. His death utterly broke Erza, desolated, she cried like she had never cried before.[504] Main article: Shô Shô has known Erza since childhood, and the two are like brother and sister. They met as slaves in the Tower of Heaven and developed a friendship alongside with Simon, Millianna, Wally Buchanan and Jellal Fernandes.[505] They spent time together and one day, they decided to escape. It was Shô's plan but when the guards discovered their escape, and they demanded who was the mastermind, Erza said it was her, protecting Shô from an inhumane torture.[23] Erza cared so much for Shô that she went through the intense pain of torture causing the loss of her eye. Due to a series of events, Erza is forced to leave the Tower of Heaven and Shô was told that she abandoned him. When the two met again years later, Shô captured Erza to take her back to the Tower of Heaven to be used as a sacrifice, although he did say he was very happy to see Erza fine after so many years.[506] When he learns that Erza never actually abandoned him, Shô regrets his actions and sides with Erza again.[507] After the Tower of Heaven threat was annihilated, Shô prepares to leave Erza silently but Erza intercepts them and she prepares the Fairy Tail Farewell ceremony. As they part their ways, they cry the tears of joy, deeply moved, looking forward to meet again.[483] Main article: Wally Buchanan Erza and Wally Buchanan have been friends since their childhood, having both been slaves in the Tower of Heaven,[19] as well as members of the small group of children led by Jellal Fernandes.[480] While initially shown willing to kidnap Erza alongside the rest of his group to take revenge on her for supposedly leaving them behind in the Tower,[508] after hearing the truth and being told of her innocence he shamefully apologized to her, regretting his former actions.[482] When Erza intercepted him, Sho and Millianna while the three of them were trying to leave during the night out of shame for what they did, she gave them a tearful farewell ceremony in Fairy Tail's style, complete with fireworks which her teammates set up; something which left Wally deeply moved, prompting him to promise that his and Erza's paths will cross again.[483] |

Welcome to Fairy Hills!!
Erza is present in the first OVA, Welcome to Fairy Hills!!. There, Erza is in the girls’ dormitory, Fairy Hills, and looks out the window to see Lucy in a cat outfit, Wendy, Carla, and Happy standing outside. She invites Lucy in and shows her everyone’s rooms, including her own spacious rooms filled with armors that she can’t carry with her. After they are done, Erza invites her to the welcoming party held for Wendy and Carla, but Lucy refuses, saying that she wants to look around more. At the party, Erza and the girls relax under the sun, chat, swim, and play volleyball.
Later, when Lucy calls for Hilda, Erza comes out instead, telling her that Hilda had died six years ago. She spots a box in Lucy’s hands and both look inside it to find it full of jewels. Erza starts shaking and recounts to Lucy about an event that had occurred six years ago. Hilda had always cared for the dorm girls, and one day had brought some toy jewels to all of them. Everyone had gotten one except for Erza, and to hide her disappointment, she lamented that they didn't suit her anyway. That night, Grandma Hilda visited Erza in her room and told her that she would give her real jewels through a cat princess. However, she died the next day after her carriage fell off a cliff. Erza decides to divide the jewels among the dorm girls and Lucy, since she is the cat princess that brought her the jewels. Suddenly, the request and Lucy's cat suit disappears. Erza realizes that Hilda has been watching over them even after the accident. Erza then notices Lucy naked and tells her to wear some clothes.[17]
Fairy Academy: Yankee-kun and Yankee-chan!
Erza is the student council president in Lucy's class, and is the one to prevent Natsu and Gray from fighting before the classes begin. During lunch break, Erza sits along with the other girls of her class and eats her cake while discussing with them. When Cana appears, spreading rumors about another school targeting their own, Erza lectures her about not adjusting her clothes and also guarantees that everything will be fine. After school, she approaches Wendy and Lucy and leaves the school with them. On their way, they see a young man with an atomizer, saying that he wants to change the world.
Erza later reveals to Lucy and Wendy that she has a date with a student named Zeke from a nearby school, and seeks their help to choose clothes for her date, as she is too stressed about it to make those decisions on her own. The girls visit a store and Erza tries out numerous clothes, but then remembers that she hasn't decided upon an underwear, or even her hairstyle. Lucy calls a certain friend of hers to help Erza and, after a while, she is ready for her date. As Erza walks there, along with Lucy and Wendy, the group is ambushed by students from the nearby academy Cana told her earlier about. However, her date arrives while Erza beats those delinquents, and this apparently scares him off, as he calls her a Demon and then leaves, much to her shock and disappointment.
The following day, although she is depressed at first due to the previous day's events, Jellal, a new student, arrives at her class, and immediately asks Erza to a date after school. This leads to her having another mental breakdown and seeking Lucy's help once more. Although Lucy helps her prepare for her date, when the students from Courage Academy attack Fairy Academy, Erza snaps and beats them all once again. However, Jellal, Zeke as well as the third person that looks like them witness this, call her a demon, and abandon her. After being rejected, Erza, along with Natsu, Lucy, Gray, Mirajane and Wendy, spends her night on a karaoke party. The next day, Erza and the other Fairy Academy students are present to listen to the principal's speech. Later, she becomes enraged at Natsu, when she falls for one of his pranks aimed at Gray. [509]
Memory Days
Erza is one of the main characters in the third OVA, Memory Days. In the guild storage, Erza, Gray and Happy are arranging the books while Lucy is putting them on the shelves. Natsu asks Erza and Gray if they have seen his scarf, to which they reply that they haven't. As Natsu recalls a terrible memory involving his scar on the neck, Lucy falls from the ladder and lands on top of everyone and a purple light envelopes them. When they come to their senses, they notice that their guild has returned back to its original design. Then, three figures come running out of the guild, and the team immediately hides so as to not being seen. The three figures are revealed to be younger versions of Erza, Gray and Natsu. As Happy expresses his theory that they may have been sent to the past, Erza is overcome with nostalgia, saying that she still remembers the days when she always ordered Natsu and Gray to stand up every time she defeated them. Her younger self proves this to be true as she begins to kick Natsu and Gray, yelling at them to stand up and get up, much to the older ones' surprise.
When Natsu and Gray say that they want to stay for a while, Erza immediately disagrees, saying that it would be dangerous to stay in the past for very long as it could have dreadful consequences. Before she can finish though, Natsu, Happy and Gray run off and Erza and Lucy set out to look for them. Erza tells Lucy to wear a bunny costume and changes into a cat costume, saying that they must not be in contact with anyone in the past. While trying to figure out the book, Erza meets her younger self when the younger Erza asks her if she had seen two boys. Erza hastily points at a random direction and asks the younger Erza if she is going to apologize to them, to which she refuses. Erza notes that she has trouble confronting her feelings. Later, she finds Gray and Happy and attacks them and then asks them where Natsu is. While rushing to the riverbank, Erza explains the book's Magic, saying that if they are not touching Natsu by the six-hour limit, they will be trapped in the past forever. Finding Natsu with his younger self, she and the others quickly grab him and disappear into their own time.[510]
Fairies' Training Camp
To prepare for the upcoming Grand Magic Games, Erza and several of her guildmates head to the beach for training. However, Erza gives her teammates the first day to relax, allowing her to sunbathe on the beach as they play around. However, the relaxing atmosphere does not last for long as the boys begin training and endanger the beach, much to Erza's anger. Requipping into her Heaven's Wheel Armor, Erza destroys several chunks of ice the boys created, preventing them from destroying the beach.
That night, Erza binges on sake and quickly becomes intoxicated, giving her an angry and obnoxious personality. While drunk, Erza repeatedly requests more sake and manhandles Jet and Droy simultaneously, much to their dismay. Once the girls sober up and enter the hot springs to relax, Erza listens to Lucy's story about the time she snuck into Natsu's house as a prank but things did not go as planned. Suddenly, the girls hear noises and believing that it is the boys, Erza decides to invite them in. However, she later comes to believe that they are peeping and promptly attacks them with kunai, injuring each of them and preventing them from doing so.[511]

Trivia
- In the original version, Mashima gave her a more "wild" look. She had a spear, instead of sword, and accompanying her, an unnamed bird. Mashima said he had wanted to create a female character whom Natsu could be afraid of.[518]
- Erza ranked first in the Ms. Fairy Tail contest, which was a popularity poll held to determine the most popular females in the series at that time.[519]
- During a Q&A in Volume 9, a reader asked who the lead female character in Fairy Tail is. Erza immediately considered herself as such, but Hiro Mashima said people can draw their own conclusions.[370]
- In the Omake Welcome to Fairy Hills, Levy reveals to Lucy that Erza likes to read novels that are a bit inappropriate or racy.[520]
- During a reporter's interview, Erza said her that favorite foods are cheesecake and soufflé.[521]
- While the popular belief is that Erza's suitcases are filled with backup armors and weapons, they are actually filled with food and ingredients.[522]
- She was named after Mashima's short story character "Eru". Incidentally, the short story's name is "Fairy Tale".[523]
- In the manga, Erza updates her Heart Kreuz Armor after the Tower of Heaven arc,[108] but in the anime, she wears the updated design from the beginning.
- Erza is the winner of the Miss Fairy Tail Contest, a reader poll[524] and story event that took place during the Fighting Festival arc.[525]

- In Volume 32's extra content, Mashima provided the battle statistics for 31 of the 40 X791 contestants in the Grand Magic Games. The stats, however, were provided not from Mashima's point-of-view as the author but from the view point of Sorcerer Magazine reporter Jason. Which explains why some stats are missing and why others may be inaccurate. According to Jason from the Sorcerer Magazine, during her participation in the Grand Magic Games of X791, Erza's stats are:[526]
Quotes
- (To Fairy Tail members) "I've heard you've been causing trouble again. Even if Master forgives you, I won't."[527]
- (To Jose Porla) "My companions make my heart strong. If I'm fighting for those I love, I care not what happens to this body."[528]
- (To Shô) "If I don't wear my armor, I won't feel secure."[529]
- (To herself) "We don't die for our friends, we live for our friends"[530]
- (To Jellal Fernandes) "I won't allow it! I won't allow you to die like this! You've committed crimes! You must remember everything! Don't think you can be at ease without knowing anything! Don't expect to be forgiven by the people who you've hurt! Live and struggle!"[531]
- (To Midnight) "As long as you laugh at people's suffering, your goal will always out of reach. If you never want to be defeated, you must first learn your own weakness, and always be kind"[532]
- (To Jellal Fernandes) "I wonder for how long... How long will I remain anchored at this harbor known as battle?"
- (To Erza Knightwalker) "Listen, Erza!! You've got the same evil and weakness in you that I have, so you must also have the same heart, which is capable of loving others! Listen for the voices of all living things with all your heart! They’re calling out with their true voices! You are not alone![533]
- (To Pantherlily) "But what's important isn't the Magic, it's the heart of the wielder who uses it."[534]
- (To Azuma) "All I need is the power to be able to protect my comrades. So long as I can have the strength to do that, I don't care if I'm weaker than everyone in the world."[535]
- (To herself) "It's not that I was protecting everyone...I was the one always being protected."[536]
- (To Jellal Fernandes) "If you're going to say that you don't remember anything, I'll strike my sword on your heart and make you remember!"[537]
- (To Jellal Fernandes) "Being alive...is a sign of strength!"[538]
- (To Cobra) "Cobra ... You said that you are strong because you lost everything, doesn't it? But this isn't true strength! People become stronger when they have something to protect! If you have a true friend, that friend will support you! But you only think about yourself! Do you think you could actually hear the voice of this friend?! Don't you feel shame when you think of your friend?! Feelings by friends do not drag you down."[229]
- (To Team Sabertooth) "I don't care if you're the strongest or the top guild in Fiore, but I will tell you this. You've made enemies of the worst possible guild to piss off."[539]
- (To Kagura Mikazuchi) "This life was entrusted to me by Simon... by grandpa Rob... and my comrades... Relinquishing my life so easily would be a slap in the face to all of them."[291]
