Dragonization (竜化 Ryūka) is a process that involves transforming into a Dragon. It is also a Dragon Slayer ability and a side effect of their Dragon Slayer Magic.
Description[]
Dragonization is a process Dragon Slayers undergo caused by the Dragon Seed growing in their bodies that grant them dragon-like features, eventually turning them into full Dragons.[1] The initial stages grant Dragon Slayers enhanced senses, slitted pupils, fanged teeth, and organs such as lungs that remain permanent.[2][3][4] The enhanced senses however, causes the Mage to have motion sickness when on any mode of transportation,[5] the only exception being when riding on flying living creatures.[6]
Prolonged overuse of Dragon Slayer Magic causes the process to further mutate the Mage in question, becoming more Dragon-like over time, such as gaining features like reptilian scales and even horns. Most notably via Dragon Force, where a Slayer's Dragon power is at its most powerful, momentarily bringing out more of the host's dragonization and becoming more defined from each use. Every Dragon Slayer's Dragonization differs from the type of Dragon their respective Magic is based on, taking on the likeness of said Dragon.[7][8][9]
Another notable drawback, upon a human's transformation into a full Dragon, it is nearly difficult to return to their original form. While there are methods to appear like their old selves via Enchantment for example, they are no longer able to taste the food they consume, have difficulty sleeping, and feel constant physical discomfort. Furthermore, the completed transformation increases the user's longevity, extending their lifespan centuries beyond a natural human's. All these traits can risk causing the host to go insane.[10][11]
Dragon Eaters have a higher risk of this drawback, upon using Dragon Force, it hastens the process faster than previous Dragon Slayer generations,[12] becoming more physically like a Dragon in moments, as well as going berserk much quicker.[13]
Another method is through Dragonization Magic, where a giant Lacrima is created[14] capable of turning people into Dragons,[15] affecting even those without Magic. Much like the process for Dragon Slayers, they gain draconic features; such as enhanced senses, slitted pupils, scales, claws, and fanged teeth, this varies from person to person, with a majority already resembling Dragons. These afflicted humans go berserk much quicker and may forget past friends.[16] This method can also cause an individual to awaken to Magic they previously did not have access to.[17]
Solution[]
There are two known solutions that can prevent the completion of this transformation.
- The process can be halted by having a Dragon perform a Dragon Soul Technique ritual on a host Dragon Slayer to cure their transformation with anti-bodies that are dispersed from the Dragon residing in their body, thus avoiding ever becoming Dragons. This method however may take several years as it is a delicate process, thus halting the growth of the Dragon Seed.[18] However, despite being cured of the process, a Dragon Slayer can still temporarily and only partially "dragonize" themselves while retaining most of their human form.[7] In the rare case where a host also contains a functioning Demon Seed, the two seeds can potentially fuse and cause the Dragon Seed to continue growing. However, this is fatal to the host's life force and would ultimately kill them.[19][20]
- Alternatively, the Dragonization can also be temporarily stopped by separating the Dragon Slayer Magic from its user with the use of a Separation Enchantment. However, this has the side effect of possibly causing Magic Deficiency Disease due to the forceful removal of most of the Slayer's Magic. This method is best done when the Dragon Slayer in question is already mid-way through the process, right when they are too far to turn themselves back willingly and too berserk to be stopped.[21]
Usage[]
With enough control, Dragon Slayers are able to make use of their partial Dragonization, shifting only parts of their body at will such as forming scales as dermal armor for defense,[22][23] claws for offensive means[24] and sprouting wings for flight.[25][26] Their physical strength is also enhanced to a degree, some even being able to bulk up muscle mass.[27]
Dragon Force is also a form of Dragonization,[28] though one can use Dragon Force without manifesting any Dragon features.[29]
These capabilities appear to also be unaffected by most Magic nullification effects, as shown when Dragon Slayers were still able to use their heightened senses and consume their elements on Edolas where Magic is limited,[30] when in contact with Magic Sealing Stones[31] and when a Slayer devoured a large mass of Anti-Magic Particles with their draconic lungs.[32]
Dragon Slayers who've obtained a full Dragon form have the power and physical abilities on par with actual Dragons, therefore are extremely difficult to defeat by conventional means besides other Dragons and Dragon Slayer Magic. Although, even fully formed, they are still susceptible to motion sickness.[33]

Trivia[]
- Pre-release material of Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry uses "Dragonize" to refer to Natsu's half-Dragon appearance. During their battle, Animus' vision of Natsu flickers between his regular and a half Dragon Form, indicating that it was not an actual Dragonization.
