Demons (悪魔 Akuma) are a race of magical beings who dwell in Earth Land.

Description

The appearance and abilities of Demons vary, although there are a number of common traits which many of them share. Such traits may include horns, pointed ears, claws, tails and leathery wings. Demons also look like various animals such as dogs and birds.

Demons are known as creatures of darkness, therefore they’re unable to go near sacred and holy places such as certain temple ruins.

There is a subspecies of Demon, known as the Etherious, which is comprised of Demons born from the Books of Zeref.

Demons and Etherious posses a Demon Factor (悪魔因子, Akuma Inshi) within them; Mirajane Strauss also possesses this substance, which she explained that it was required for the use of her signature Magic; this Demon Factor is also used by members of Tartaros to turn and modify Humans into Demons, undergoing the process of Demonization, the only known successful cases were Doriate, Minerva Orland, and her father.

Mages of Dark Écriture are able to use spells to Demonize, turning into various unique looking Demonic forms.

Magic and Abilities

Demons have a number of Magic and abilities, though it varies from Demon to Demon. The subspecies known as Etherious prefer to use Curses, rather than Magic.

Transformation Magic (変身魔法 Henshin Mahō): The Demons living on Galuna Island possess this Magic and use it to transform into humans.

Resilience: Demons are very resilient, even when stabbed through the chest apparently isn’t enough to kill them. They are however vulnerable to Devil Slayer Magic, magic specifically meant to slay Demons.

Flight: Many winged Demons have been shown to possess the ability to fly with their wings.
