Gray and Juvia is the 499th chapter of Hiro Mashima's Fairy Tail.

Although reluctant to harm the other, Gray and Juvia are pitted in a deathmatch against each other by Invel, who plans to have Gray eliminate E.N.D. to liberate his Emperor from his emotional bonds. However, his plans are seemingly foiled as the two attempt a double suicide, only for Juvia to sacrifice her life to save Gray's, who is overcome by a cold fury as he faces their tormentor.

Summary

Chapter 499 Invel places an Ice Lock around Gray and Juvia's necks, and orders the two to fight each other, until one of them lays dead. Juvia takes notice of how her consciousness was starting to fade, but refuses to harm Gray. However, their bodies begin to move against their will, and the two attack each other with their magic, injuring the other. The two engage in hand-to-hand combat as Invel thinks to himself that Gray will win the match and gain the potential to defeat E.N.D. after his darkness takes over him. Invel remembers a conversation he had with Zeref, in which he asks about the penchant the latter wears around his neck. Zeref opens it, and reveals that it contains a small picture of him and his younger brother, Natsu, before the latter died. Invel realized then that the only one standing in Zeref's is E.N.D., and someone has to defeat him.

Meanwhile, Gray and Juvia continue their battle, as Juvia wonders why she is hurting Gray in such a way. She decides that while she would much rather be killed by Gray, that too is unacceptable, as Gray would feel immense guilt over murdering her. Coming to a solution, Juvia prepares her magic, and assuming that she was trying to resist, Invel tells her it is impossible. Juvia angrily screams that her body was far too small for her feelings to be locked within it, and tells Gray that she could never explain the joy of getting to know him. The water mage penetrates her stomach, taking her life of her own accord. To Invel's immense shock, Gray follows her lead, and stabs himself with his ice sword, asking Juvia how she could do something so stupid. Juvia is shocked as Gray commits suicide, and cries, denying what he had done. Gray explains he never wanted to hurt her, and wanted to protect Juvia at all costs, although he knows that he failed in the end. Juvia happily tells Gray that those words alone bring her joy as the duo collapse on the ground. Gray sadly thinks that something like this never should've happened, and asks Natsu to avenge them.

Invel admits that he miscalculated the outcome of the battle, but decides that he himself could defeat E.N.D. anyway as he leaves. Suddenly, Gray wakes up, and wonders how he is still alive. Feeling a strange sensation, Gray notices Juvia's blood flowing into his body through his wounds, and hears her thoughts as well. Juvia explains that she had secretly perfected Blood Transfusion Magic, in case something such as their situation happened. As she dies, Juvia happily states that she would be living inside Gray, because her life would always belong to him and him alone. Realizing what Juvia had done, Gray tearfully holds her lifeless body and promises that he would take her feelings more seriously if she woke up, while remembering all his interactions with the water mage. Elsewhere, Invel searches for Brandish, but suddenly feels a frightening presence. Turning around, he spots Gray with a menacing expression etched on his face.
