"It doesn't matter if I don't become an S-Class Mage anymore and it doesn't matter if I can't tell my father how I feel. I don't care about any of that. I just want to protect my friends." |
Cana Alberona (カナ・アルベローナ Kana Aruberōna) is a member of the Fairy Tail Guild, and was a potential S-Class Mage. She is a heavy drinker, but hardly ever gets drunk, no matter how much she drinks.[1] She is also the daughter of Gildarts Clive.[2]
Appearance
Cana is a tall, slim, young woman with an ample bust and tan skin. She has long, mid-back length brown hair with varying shades of color, having been seen as bright brown,[3] black,[4] and, ultimately, plain brown.[5] Two shoulder-length strands of hair frame her face, with the left one starting from a prominent, high fringe.[3] Her hair is curlier in the manga than in the anime, in which it appears more thick and wavy. After the S-Class Trial, Cana was momentarily shown with her hair tied in a high ponytail.[6] Cana has large brown eyes[3] and visibly long eyelashes; Cana's face is noticeably sharper in the manga compared to her appearance in the anime.[7] She possesses a very voluptuous figure, with large breasts and curvy hips, which, over time, steadily become more defined.[8] Her black Fairy Tail stamp is located on the lower left part of her abdomen, right above her hips. Cana's fingernails, while usually shown to be cut back and uncolored,[1] are sometimes kept long and adorned by nail polish of different colors.[3]
Cana's shapely upper body is usually left largely exposed, with most of her attires being distinctively scanty: her standard outfit consists of a light blue bikini top which features a camouflage pattern, a pair of capri pants, with two bands hanging from each leg and a light belt covered in heart motifs loosely tied around the waist. She completes her general outfit by wearing a pair of high-heeled sandals. She also had a pair of metal bracelets adorning her biceps, bearing an incision composed of many "A"s, and three simple, round metal bracelets on her right wrist.[1][3]
Around the time of the S-Class Mage Promotion Trial, Cana wore a new outfit very similar to her standard one, but slightly more concealing: she sported a white shirt, which left her abdomen and forearms exposed, held closed by a band below her collar, which was decorated by a wavy blue motif, and tied in a knot below her chest, which was exposed by the shirt and covered in a dark bikini top, with white edges flanked by wavy, protruding hollowed trimmings.[9] Her black capri pants were held up by a tighter-fitting, lavender belt adorned by red hearts,[10][11] and her high-heeled sandals were replaced by short-heeled ones, secured to her feet by many striped bands, which end mid-calf.[12] While in this outfit, she had no visible jewelry. During the very beginning of the trial, she wore a dark, revealing bikini paired with light-colored flip-flops.[13]
After the war with Grimoire Heart was over, Cana once again changed her outfit, with the new one being noticeably different, consisting of a short-sleeved light shirt with dark inner edges, revealing much of her neckline, a dark, pleated miniskirt, distinctive tights covered in a leopard pattern, and dark boots.[14] After the return from Tenrou Island, Cana is shown donning an outfit highly reminiscent of her standard one, however, with subtle differences: she initially dons a bikini top covered in dark polygons together with the pants and belt from the S-Class Trial,[15] and short-heeled, dark sandals. She also added three more metal bracelets, that circle her left wrist, to her standard jewelry.[16]
Cana always carries around a shoulder bag, with the plain brown strap passing over her left shoulder and diagonally crossing her chest, which is covered and completely obscured by a mass of very long and massive feathers,[17] which are lavender,[11] and occasionally light blue, in color.
Personality
Cana has a great love for alcoholic beverages such that it borders on addiction. Oftentimes, she is often seen drinking directly from a large beer barrel.[17] She started drinking at the age of thirteen, two years before the legal age, and the frequency of her drinking has grown to the point where thirty percent of Fairy Tail's liquor budget goes down her throat.[1] Despite her drinking and somewhat laid-back attitude, Cana is one of the more serious members of the guild: she hardly ever goofs off (except when she's drinking), unlike the majority of the other members.[18] She is very focused on the situation at hand. She seems to harbor some romantic feelings for Macao Conbolt, her drinking buddy, as when he suggested she cut down a bit she did so. But when she discovered he had a new girlfriend she returned to drinking and even doubled her quantity.[1] In the guild itself, Cana often assumes leadership in dire situations, such as during the fight against Phantom Lord, and assesses situations in a logical manner.[19] She is extremely loyal to the guild and its members, regardless of how new they are or what their background may be.[20] In addition, Cana always stands up for her dreams (to become an S-Class Mage) and is rather tenacious, as shown when she attacked Freed, despite being unable to defeat him in the past, without hesitation during their S-Class Mage Promotion Trial battle.[21] However, the S-Class exam showed another side of her. She demonstrated a very selfish side, one which was willing to betray her teammates to become an S-Class Mage. This goal and selfishness of hers caused her to even put her own guildmates in peril.[22] This desperation actually stemmed from her desire to confess to her father.[23] However, upon realizing her mistake she became deeply depressed and tried to rectify her mistake.[24]
As a child, she didn't have much interest in drinking and she was much more mature than the other young members of the guild, acting like an older sister figure to them.[25]
History
Cana has been in Fairy Tail for twelve years, often socializing with a young Gray Fullbuster, and having joined the guild before Natsu Dragneel or Erza Scarlet.[26] Among those who are part of the younger generation of Fairy Tail, Cana has been in Fairy Tail the longest.[27] She has been with the guild even longer than Mirajane, Elfman and Lisanna, as she was one of the first to become friends with the latter two siblings.[28] As a very young girl, Cana came to Fairy Tail after the death of her mother to find her father, Gildarts Clive, who was a member of Fairy Tail. Though her mother had left Cana in the custody of Gildarts, he was unaware that he had a daughter; Cana became too intimidated to tell him that she was his daughter upon learning what a powerful Mage he was. Gildarts gave her little to no attention, even during the brief times he was at the guild, and Cana joined the guild in hopes of someday working up the nerve to tell him that he was her father. However, as time went on, it became more difficult for Cana and she eventually decided that she would tell Gildarts the truth when she was able to become an S-Class Mage. However, despite having the potential to become an S-Class Mage, she began to despair after failing the exam four times, surpassed even by Erza and Mirajane, both of whom had joined the guild after her.[29]
Cana also stayed for a time at a church orphanage in Magnolia Town as a child.[30]
Synopsis
Macao arc
After Natsu and Happy bring Lucy Heartfilia to the guild, Cana makes a jab at Gray regarding his undignified appearance before subsequently drinking directly out of a massive beer barrel.[17] The quarrelsome actions of Natsu and Gray lead into a massive brawl. Complaining about the noise, she is the first one to release her Magic in an effort to end the fight, however, Makarov's sudden appearance in his giant form soon puts an end to the brawl.[31] When he reads out the list of offenses caused by the members, Cana's involves her drinking fifteen barrels of alcohol and charging it to the Magic Council.[32]
Lullaby arc
Following Erza's reappearance at the guild, Cana is briefly scolded by her for her drinking habits.[33] During the fight between Natsu and Erza, Cana acts as a bookie and lets people place bets on who they think will win.[34]
Phantom Lord arc
The outrage caused by Gajeel Redfox's attacks on Levy McGarden, Droy and Jet lead Cana and a large portion of the Fairy Tail members to directly attack Phantom Lord's guild.[35] She fights alongside Loke in the battle, defeating many minor members.[36] However, the unforeseen loss of Makarov's Magic Power forces them to retreat.[37] Recovering at the guild, she is seen attempting to locate Mystogan through her Magic but has no success. With Laxus as their only hope, Mirajane manages to contact him, but he tells her that he'll only return if Lucy becomes his "woman" and if Cana strips for him, prompting Mirajane to angrily smash the Lacrima. When she expresses her desire to join the fight, Cana holds her back and tells that despite her status as a former S-Class Mage, she will only hold them back if she participates.[38] Suddenly, the humongous six-legged Phantom Lord Headquarters suddenly attacks with its Jupiter Cannon, though they are shielded from its blast by Erza.[39] As Jose Porla's Shades attack, she sends Team Natsu and Elfman into the Phantom MK II to defeat the Element 4.[40] She fights valiantly but watches in horror as the guild is destroyed.[41][42] However, she is overjoyed as Natsu defeats Gajeel and Makarov defeats Jose, winning them the war.[43] Celebrating, Cana then begins to drink.
Battle of Fairy Tail arc
Cana returns to compete in the "Miss Fairy Tail" pageant so that she may buy more alcohol with the prize money.[44] She is swiftly turned to stone by Evergreen, along with the other contestants,[45] but is returned to her normal state when Erza defeats Evergreen.[46] After that, Cana and Juvia set out to find Laxus, though on their hunt they encounter Freed instead. Trapped inside one of his enchantments, Juvia attacks one of the Lacrima floating above, preventing her and Cana from having to fight each other, as well as setting her free. After consoling a weeping Juvia, Cana angrily attacks Freed[47] for his mockery of Juvia, though she is defeated.[48] Later, after Laxus's defeat, the Fantasia Parade begins, and she reminds Juvia that she has to participate in the parade[49] before going on the "Miss Fairy Tail" float with Levy, Bisca and Lucy.[50]
Daphne arc
Note: Events in this arc occur only in the anime and do not constitute canon material.
Following Gray's return to the guild after his alignment with the villainous Daphne, Cana begins to berate him, however, she is interrupted by an extremely defensive Juvia.[51] After Gray returns, Cana listens as he explains his true motive; she then assists in the fight against Daphne's mini Dragonoids. After Daphne is defeated and all Dragonoids, both large and small, are defeated, Cana celebrates alongside her teammates.[52]
Edolas arc
Cana is seen drinking from a barrel at the guild, even throughout the opening of the Anima, hugging and calling it her "boyfriend'. Mirajane advises her to leave some of her "boyfriend" for guests before leaving for the Kardia Cathedral with Elfman. She later talks with Lucy and Levy about Natsu's childhood friend, Lisanna. She comments that Lucy looks similar to Lisanna.[53] Anima transports all of them to Edolas.[54] Later, after Team Natsu returns from Edolas, Gray begins to talk about her counterpart before bursting into laughter at her thought, prompting Cana to tell him that he is making her drink taste bad.[55]
Tenrou Island arc
When the guild once again starts a brawl, Cana notes that it's been quite some time since the last before she, herself, joins in.[56] Later, Cana appears in Lucy's bathtub while the woman is taking a shower, asking her if she has any alcohol. Cana then asks Lucy how her relationship with her father is, but when Lucy inquires as to the nature of the question, Cana replies that she is thinking about leaving the guild, something which she says yearly around the same time.[57] Later, Cana is among the Mages who qualify to participate in the S-Class Mage Promotion Trial, though unlike the others, she remains quiet. Shortly thereafter, Carla sees a vision of the future in which Cana is crying.[58]
An extremely drunk Cana is later found in an alleyway by Lucy, where she is then brought to the latter's apartment. Upon arriving, Cana reveals that this will be her fifth attempt at becoming an S-Class Mage, and that if she fails then she will be unable to meet "that person". Upon being asked why she wishes to become an S-Class Mage, Cana tells Lucy her reason, and states that if she fails this time, then she truly will leave the guild; Lucy tells Cana that she will help her achieve her goal and asks the woman to be her partner for the Promotion Trial.[59] As the participants head towards the island, Cana patiently awaits their arrival.[60] After Makarov explains the rules of the trial, Cana prepares to leave, but she and the rest of the participants are halted by Freed, who has set up an enchantment allowing only him and Bickslow to move on.With everyone else pulling ahead of them, Cana and Lucy leave for the island last.[61] Upon arriving, the two women notice that only one path remains, a fact which depresses Cana. Shortly after walking down said path, however, they find themselves face-to-face with Freed and Bickslow, whom they must defeat to advance.[62]
Despite being initially apprehensive at fighting Freed, Cana soon discovers that his weakness is immodestly dressed women and promptly summons a multitude of bikini-clad women to deal with him, though the two find out that Bickslow doesn't share this same weakness. Cana then uses The Prayer's Fountain card, which summons beams of water to strike at Bickslow's dolls; this proves ineffective as the dolls dodge the beams and continue their strike. Just then, however, using Cana's water as a medium, Lucy summons Aquarius and floods the cave with a wild torrent of water, rendering Freed and Bickslow unconscious and leaving them the victors. After the fact, however, Cana and Aquarius squabble amongst each other.[63] Later, while changing out of her bikini, Cana senses Gildarts release his Magic Power.[64] Cana and Lucy, along with the other winners of the first trial, welcome Gray and Loke when they arrive. After Makarov announces who defeated who in the first part of the trial, Cana deduces that Elfman and Evergreen had to have gone down Mirajane's path. Assuming they lost, Cana expresses shock when they appear, claiming to have beaten her. Cana then states her desire to not lose when Natsu challenges them all to see who becomes the next S-Class Mage.[65] When the next trial to find Mavis Vermilion's grave begins, Cana and Lucy get chased by a Rollidillo.[66]
Later, using their combined knowledge and experiences, Cana and Lucy deduce the location of Mavis' grave and rush towards it, however, they are followed by Gray and Loke.[67] However, they soon see the emergency signal flare, signaling the immediate end of the trial; in spite of this, Cana wishes to continue.[68] Cana and Lucy are then approached by Gray and Loke, who tell them that they should go to the rendezvous point.[69] Along the way, they see numerous Grimoire Heart members emerge from bubbles in the sky and the group battles them, quickly dispatching most of them.[70] The remaining combatants suddenly vanish, and Caprico arrives to fight all of them, saying that having the remaining Grimoire Heart members fight would be a waste and that he alone would suffice.[71] As the fight begins, Caprico immediately knocks Cana onto the ground with a high kick.[72] Later on, as Cana gets back up, Caprico informs the group what Grimoire Heart plans to do with Zeref: make him the ruler of a world where non-magical humans cannot survive.[73]
The group then questions Grimoire Heart's goals, and as everyone prepares to fight, Loke tells the others to leave so he can fight their opponent one on one. He explains that their opponent uses Human Subordination Magic, which weakens the battle and Magic Power of humans. He then tells them that their opponent is the Celestial Spirit Capricorn, surprising Cana, prompting her and the others to reluctantly leave.[74] Cana then asks to split up into two groups so they can find the other members of the Seven Kin. Despite Gray's protests, Cana and Lucy separate from the Ice-Make Mage.[75] After a while, Cana asks Lucy about the hints left for them to find Mavis' grave; Lucy mentions that death made her think of other things, such as the six hour time limit referring to a six letter word and a word synonymous to death: "demise". Upon hearing its connection to the E Path present at the beginning of the trial, Cana puts Lucy to sleep with her Sleep Card, moves her off the path and walks away, apologizing to Lucy for her actions.[76]
Cana eventually reaches E Path and notices that she is the first to arrive on said path and reaffirms her desire to become an S-Class Mage to be able to meet her father. Continuing to walk down the path, she sees a bright light shining.[77] Cana walks towards Mavis Vermilion's grave, claiming that she can now become an S-Class Mage and finally meet her father. When she reaches the grave she is surprised to see it is glowing.[78] Cana then tries to touch the Mavis's grave but is blocked by the Magic surrounding it.[79] Cana then recalls the time she first visited Fairy Tail after her mother's death; she was in search of her father, Gildarts, but lacked the courage to tell him the truth. As the years passed and she repeatedly failed to become an S-Class Mage, Cana lost the confidence to tell him.[29] The pouch Cana is carrying then begins to glow; she remembers that inside is the Help Lucy Card, a card made to alert her to any dangers Lucy may be in, causing her to break down. Dropping the card, Cana breaks down and states that she never wished to betray her comrades. Desiring to join the fight once more, Mavis bestows Fairy Glitter unto Cana.[80] After using Lucy's Help Card to find her and the others, Cana immediately attacks the dominating Bluenote Stinger with her cards and tries to cast Fairy Glitter, but the shocked Bluenote uses his Gravity Magic to stop her. After apologizing to Lucy and assuring her that she will defeat Bluenote, Cana asks Natsu to distract Bluenote so that she may build up her Magic Power, but Bluenote stops them again by using his Gravity Magic. Hearing that Bluenote wishes to acquire Fairy Glitter, Cana tells him that only those from Fairy Tail can wield it, but Bluenote counters by explaining that those who are closest to The One Magic can use all kinds of Magic, and that someone such as her can't even fathom the proper use of a complex spell such as Fairy Glitter, all the while being lifted into the air by the man.[81]
As Bluenote is about to kill her, Natsu manages to distract Bluenote long enough to allow Cana to cast Fairy Glitter. The spell, however, is parried onto the ground and Bluenote further taunts Cana about her inability to properly wield Fairy Glitter. Stunned by the fact that Bluenote is still standing, Cana is saved by the arrival of Gildarts seconds before Bluenote prepares to kill her.[82] At the sight of her father, Cana cries, but Gildarts tells everyone to get away as he runs up to attack Bluenote. Looking at the ground, Cana tells an indecisive Lucy that if they stay they will only be in his way.[83] As they run, Cana, at some point, loses consciousness and is carried to the camp by Lucy.[84]
After Grimoire Heart's defeat, she wonders whether her father is okay, only to be surprised to see him laughing at Laxus for his excommunication. She later takes an herbal bath with Lucy while everyone is still at the camp. When Lucy asks about her arm that was injured when she used Fairy Glitter, Cana holds it up, showing that it has healed, and the trial period of its use had ended; Cana apologizes to Lucy for leaving her and going off, though she is immediately forgiven.[85]
Later on, Cana walks up to Gildarts while the man is fishing. When they are finally alone, Cana reveals Gildarts is her father. Gildarts, surprised, starts going through the list of all the women he has been with, wondering whose daughter Cana is. Cana, extremely disappointed, starts to walk away, but Gildarts then comes behind her and hugs her, realizing Cana can only be the daughter of Cornelia. Gildarts tells Cana that Cornelia was the only woman he actually loved, but was too focused on work, and left eighteen years ago. Cana tells Gildarts he doesn't need to be a father now, and says for just one moment she was glad to meet him. Gildarts cries after realizing how he never knew his daughter, and hugs her again, promising they will spend more time together.[86]
Everything is interrupted when the "Black Dragon of the Apocalypse", Acnologia, lands on the island and starts his rampage. Cana flees with the guild after Makarov defends the guild from the Dragon all by himself,[87] though she and the others swiftly return to fend the Dragon off. Eventually the Dragon flies into the air, tired of the battle, and prepares a final attack to destroy the island. All the Fairy Tail members on the island hold hands so as to erect a defensive barrier. Their efforts fail and Acnologia's Dragon's Roar obliterates Tenrou Island and everything on it.[88]
X791 arc
Cana, along with the rest of the Team Tenrou, are rescued by Bisca, Alzack, Jet, Droy, Max, Warren and The Trimens from Blue Pegasus. She watches as Mavis Vermilion reveals that she was the one who saved them before disappearing. She, along with the other returning members, then returns to Fairy Tail and is tearfully welcomed back by Romeo.[89] It is then that, much to her chagrin, Cana is paraded around the guild in Gildarts' arms.[15]
Key of the Starry Sky arc
Note: Events in this arc occur only in the anime and do not constitute canon material.
Following the Legion Corps' attack on Fairy Tail, and their subsequent success in retrieving the stolen clock part from Lucy, Cana listens to her father talk about what he learned while earlier fighting Byro Cracy. Later, she and the rest of the guild try to figure out what the Legion Corps' motives are, and when they suggest investigating the crusade that the members are on, Cana strategically concludes that dividing into groups would be the most efficient method. She bluntly tells Gildarts that she won't join him in the new mission he is sent to go on.[90]
When Natsu and his group return from their encounter with Samuel and Dan, Cana, along with the others laughs, at how small Natsu has become. Then, when Lucy explains the contents of the Key of the Starry Heavens book, they decide to split up and search for the remaining clock pieces; Cana is teamed up with Erza, Wendy and Carla to look for a clock piece. Erza decides to have a picnic on the way to their location, which the others are hesitant about. However, some bandits try to stop them from having their picnic and ruin it, prompting Erza to become furious and defeat the bandits, much to Cana's shock.[91]
The team continues to search for the clock piece, but they eventually find themselves lost; in spite of this they continue on. When they arrive to the Magic Library they have been searching for, they enter and express surprise at the sheer number of books on Magic the library contains.[92]
They soon find themselves face-to-face with the Jiggle Butt Gang; Cana is surprised by their unusual attitudes, and when their very presences causes Carla to fall, Cana catches her. When Wendy tells Cana to go search for the clock piece with Carla, Cana agrees and hands her a card before she and Carla leave. The duo then proceeds to search through the Library until, that is, they happen across an archived section. Whilst there, Cana stumbles and knocks into one of the bookcases, causing it to knock over. There, she finds a passageway and runs through it with Carla, only to find a clock piece on the other end. As they try to figure out how to carry it back, they are attacked by the Jiggle Butt Gang, however, Cana and Carla recover quickly and return to Erza and Wendy right after Erza defeats the large-buttocked trio.[93]
Heading back with their clock piece, Cana and her group find a picnic table and decide to give a picnic another try, the whole group wearing Jiggle Butt Gang suits while doing so. They are then stopped by the Jiggle Jugs Gang, who proceed to eat their food, making Erza extremely angry. Unsurprised, Cana watches as Erza dispatches the group of large-breasted men.[94]
Cana notices that the her team's clock piece is glowing; the same is true for the clock pieces in other areas. Cana, along with Carla, Wendy and Erza, as well as the other Fairy Tail Mages who had acquired their own clock pieces, arrives at the Zentopia Graveyard, where Lucy's group fights against Byro Cracy. Cana uses her Magic Card and, in a unified effort with the other Mages, attempts to defeat Byro, only to fail because of the latter's Nullification Magic. Cana is also later present when the Infinity Clock parts are united, creating the clock once again, and witnesses the appearance of the group formerly known as the Oración Seis.[95]
Cana fights against the Reborn Oración Seis along with her guildmates, but like all others, she is unsuccessful in doing damage to their forces. After they are defeated through the use of Angel's Magic, the whole group of Fairy Tail Mages is rescued by those of Blue Pegasus and taken to their Guild's building. Cana is shown chatting with the others afterwards, completely unscathed.[96]
Back at the guild, Cana wakes up due the ruckus and asks her guildmates if they want to find the Reborn Oración Seis. At Cana's allowance, Romeo pins a map of Fiore to the request board; Cana throws cards on the map, with each landing in separate places, and watches as Macao announces the groups assigned to each location. When Juvia asks Cana if Gray can switch places with Gajeel or if Freed can switch with her, Cana replies that the cards say that for now Gajeel and her will have to be paired together.[97] Later, Cana sneezes and thinks that someone has been complimenting her.[98]
Soon after, Cana and the rest of her guildmates are informed by Gildarts and Laki that the Michelle Lobster with Lucy's group is nothing more than an imposter, worrying Cana.[99]
Once Elfman returns and reveals the truth about Imitia, he apologizes for not being able to prevent her from taking Natsu and Lucy with her, but Cana comforts him and tells him that it is her fault as well, as she was being used by Midnight all along. When Jean-Luc Neville arrives at Fairy Tail, she, along with the other Mages, listens to him explaining how Jude Heartfilia got the clock piece that ended up in Lucy's hands, as well as how dangerous Real Nightmare really is. As Fairy Tail agrees to put an end to Real Nightmare, Cana divides the Fairy Tail Mages into teams once again and also foretells Ichiya's arrival. As the team chosen to save Lucy boards the Christina, Cana says that her divinations are certainly accurate this time.[100]
Some time after the Infinity Clock crisis is dealt with, the Legionnaires arrive at Fairy Tail to apologize for their actions, as well as to say goodbye to the Mages as they must go find the scattered clock pieces once more. Cana spends her time drinking during the party thrown by Makarov in order to celebrate, and when Levy wonders what Gildarts is talking about with Byro, Cana suggests that it's probably just a dirty conversation about women.[101]
Grand Magic Games arc
Later on, Cana asks Erza if she has seen her father around, to which Erza says that Gildarts went to the old guild location with Makarov. Cana takes this as an opportunity to do her jobs and heads out alone.[102] Cana is present at the inauguration for her father to become the Fifth Master of Fairy Tail, though expresses surprise when he leaves a note in his place. In the note, Gildarts says that he went on another journey and that his only acts as Master are the reinstatement of Laxus Dreyar and the announcement of Makarov as the Sixth Master. Additionally, Gildarts has also left a card for Cana in case she ever needs him. Cana, however, immediately tears the card in two, stating that she wants no change in her life.[103] Later, after the guild decides to join the Grand Magic Games, Cana, together with Mirajane, Elfman and Lisanna, hikes out to the mountain to train themselves and enhance their power.[104] While everyone else in Fairy Tail goes to the Domus Flau to support the competing members of Fairy Tail, Cana tours the local bars in Crocus. When the members of Fairy Tail are in a bar in Crocus celebrating their defeat, Cana criticizes them for losing so badly.[105] A while after, a man named Bacchus comes into the bar and challenges her to a drinking match and, in spite of her warnings to the man, Bacchus holds his desire firm and defeats Cana, taking her bikini top as a trophy.[106]
The next day, after it is revealed that Bacchus is fighting for Team Quatro Cerberus against Team Fairy Tail A, she angrily demands that whoever is to fight the Quatro Cerberus representative to get revenge for her.[107] As the battle between Elfman and Bacchus continues, Cana is seen grimacing as Elfman takes serious damage, and again when she thinks that her guildmate has lost, but soon cheers as she discovers that he has won.[108] After Lisanna checks on Elfman, Cana welcomes her back and inquires about the victor's condition.[109]
On the Third Day of the Grand Magic Games, Cana represents the B Team as Jellal's replacement, as he can't come out due to Lahar's presence. The event, Pandemonium, consists of defeating monsters of different levels to earn points and progress. However, the event is finished by Erza Scarlet alone, which amazes the entire audience.[110]
With Erza bringing an early end to Pandemonium, the placement of the other participants is motioned to be decided by the substitute event MPF, which is named after the device it employs: the Magic Power Finder, an artifact that, when struck by Magic, represents the amount of power that the Magic has as a numerical value; the higher the number, the more powerful the Magic.[111] Having picked 8 as her number, Cana is the last to use the MPF. When her turn arrives, she reveals her Fairy Glitter tattoo, which Mavis lent to her, much to Makarov's surprise. Cana then proceeds to cast Fairy Glitter on the MPF, devastating the surrounding area and shocking the entire audience as the full power of Fairy Glitter breaks the device, giving Cana a full score of 9,999, exceeding the power of even Jura's spell and placing Team Fairy Tail B second for the event portion. As Cana proclaims Fairy Tail's power to the audience, the Fairy Glitter tattoo vanishes from her arm.[112]
During the Third Day's battle portion, Cana is extremely surprised to see what appears to be Laxus being overpowered by "Alexei".[113] Cana later expresses shock when she sees Laxus disappear and another Laxus appear in his stead, surrounded by the defeated Team Raven Tail and with "Alexei" exposed as Ivan Dreyar. With Laxus declared the winner, Cana is visibly pleased.[114] At the end of the day, Cana drinks with her fellows at the local bar. As they party, she boasts about her power during the MPF event to Macao and Wakaba, both of whom ask if she was just cheating.[115]
That evening, Cana and the rest of the guild heads to Ryuzetsu Land, a popular leisure center in Crocus. Upon arrival, Cana laments at not having brought a swimsuit.[116] She later hangs out with the members of Team Quatro Puppy in the pool, much to their delight.[117] A little while later, Gray and Lyon fight and freeze the pool, with Natsu deciding to get rid of the ice by using his own Magic; Cana is sent flying when Natsu uses more power than necessary, ending up in the rubble, unconscious and on top of Bacchus.[118]
The next day, during the Naval Battle event, Cana is seen commenting on how Juvia literally fell out of the water dome during her participation.[119]
After Lucy is taken to the infirmary, Cana is seen in the ward, saying that even though they are from different teams, they are still from the same guild. When Lucy falls asleep, she comments that Sabertooth has put them in a depressed mood.[120] As the new Team Fairy Tail is announced, she says that it is an incredible team.[121] Later, following Natsu's victory against Sting and Rogue on the Fourth Day, Cana is seen cheering him for him.[122]
Soon after, the final day of the games begins and Team Fairy Tail enters the arena, topping the rankings at #1. Cana stands in the crowd with an excited expression and, alongside the rest of the guild, cheers for the team.[123] When the event of the day starts, as the various teams move throughout Crocus, Cana responds to Lisanna's query as to why Team Fairy Tail isn't moving, claiming that she doesn't know.[124] As the team moves out under Mavis' strategic command, Cana notes her strategy to be one aimed towards complete victory.[125]
As Gray prepares to battle Rufus Lore of Team Sabertooth, Cana watches in the crowd with other Fairy Tail members, listening as Mavis recounts Rufus' vitality to Sabertooth's plan.[126] After the battle begins and Rufus makes his moves, Cana comments on how Rufus can make it so that any Magic Gray uses once can't be used again.[127] After Gray manages to defeat Rufus, Cana, along with the other guild members, cheers on the Ice-Make Mage for his victory.[128] Soon after Gray's victory, Erza encounters both Minerva and Kagura on the battlefield, and whilst the members of Fairy Tail all comment on the unpredictable outcome of the battle and express their worry for Erza, Cana happily grabs them all into drunken hugs, confidently stating that there is no way Erza can lose.[129] During the fight between Erza and Kagura, Cana watches in shock as Erza's opponent unsheathes her sword and aims for an apologizing Erza, resulting in a bloody outcome.[130] Erza however, is unharmed, though Cana's relief can only be short-lived as she soon becomes concerned when, in a different part of Crocus, Gajeel begins to be beaten around by Sabertooth's Rogue, the latter being possessed by his shadow.[131] However, Gajeel is ultimately victorious and Cana reassuringly pats Levy on her head.[132]
Later, as the battle between Jura, Laxus and Orga begins, Cana watches uneasily as Orga is swiftly defeated by Jura.[133] She is then shocked after Laxus is smashed into the ground by the Wizard Saint with ease.[134] Later, a curious Cana approaches Levy as she sees a book in her hands. She asks Levy where she attained said book from, but Levy simply continues to explain Erza's armor's abilities and its history. Cana listens to the maiden as she states that due to the incredible amount of Magic consumed by the Nakagami Armor, it has been more than a decade since anyone has been able to don it. Upon defeating Minerva, as well as Gray and Juvia dominating the battlefield over at their side, Team Fairy Tail receives a total of six points; filling the Guild's Mages' hearts with happiness. However, after calculating the scores and noting that Sabertooth's Sting Eucliffe still has a shot at achieving victory, Cana, filled with worry, waits for the outcome of the tournament.[135]
Cana looks towards the sky as she learns of Sting's location in Crocus, thanks to the Mage firing a flare up at the sky. Despite her worry-filled thoughts, Sting surrenders, grating Fairy Tail the victory. Cana and the other Mages celebrate the joyous event.[136] With the victory announced, Cana raises her arms in glee over the success of their guild.[137]
Soon after, Cana goes along with the members of the various participating guilds and is told by the King about the upcoming Dragon invasion. When Evergreen states that all of Fairy Tail couldn't even defeat Acnologia, Lisanna comments that such was a special case. Despite this, Cana remains apprehensive about an attack by 10,000 Dragons. The King requests that the guilds cooperate with the kingdom to stop the attack by explaining their plan. Hearing this, Cana joins the many other Mages in agreeing to do so.[138] As the guilds prepare themselves for the upcoming battle, Cana suggests Erza to take a bit more time to rest due to her wound, which Erza dismisses and states that she will be fine.[139]
Cana later watches as the Dragon Atlas Flame descends upon Fairy Tail. After introducing himself, the Dragon attacks Fairy Tail with his Dragon's Roar, sending the entire Guild, Cana included, flying.[140] Soon after, Cana looks to the sky and sees Natsu attacking a Dragon, shouting to all that Dragon Slayer Magic can defeat Dragons and that their seven Dragon Slayers are meant to defeat the seven Dragons.[141]
She is then witness to Motherglare's dropping of eggs, which hatch into small Dragons. Worried about the problems caused by one Dragon and now having to face a number of them, Cana stands back as Laxus attacks Atlas Flame, stating he will take care of the large Dragon while the others take care of the smaller ones.[142] After the Eclipse Gate is destroyed, the Dragons and the Hatchlings disappear, leading Cana and the rest of the guild to celebrate their victory.[143]
Cana, along with all the other Mages that participated in the Grand Magic Games, is invited to the palace for a party to celebrate their survival against the Dragons. Cana spends most of the time drinking with her guildmates, though she is also challenge to another drinking contest by Bacchus.[144]
Once the banquet ends, Cana and the rest of Fairy Tail return to Magnolia Town, where the citizens throw them a party for their success in the Grand Magic Games. To celebrate, Cana takes out a bottle of alcohol for celebration purposes, only to have Laxus tell her to stop.[145]
Eclipse Celestial Spirits arc
Note: Events in this arc occur only in the anime and do not constitute canon material.
Cana, along with the other Fairy Tail Mages, arrives as a reinforcement to help the main group through the use of Warren's Telepathy. This causes the Celestial Spirits to return to their gates due to being outnumbered. After taking one of Hisui's Celestial Spirit Banishment Keys, Cana tracks down Scorpio, who awaits her at the Battle Colosseum.[146] Cana starts her card battle against Eclipse Scorpio, wondering why the cards are blank. As Scorpio repeats that he is the rules, Cana shuts him up, calling him tedious. As she still doesn't have any idea how the game is played, she watches Scorpio making the first move, summoning the projection of Eclipse Gemini, serving as a card battle monster. Not having monsters to protect her, Cana can only watch as Gemini attack her life points directly.[147]
As the first turn of the card battle between Cana andEclipse Scorpio comes to an ends, the latter proceeds to inform Cana of the rules, which consist of the both of them possessing 4 symbols that each denote a life point. Once a contestant loses all 4 of their lives, they are defeated. Slowly analyzing the elements of the game, Cana deduces that their comrades are their units in this game and slowly adapts to the rules of the game, propelling Scorpio to commemorate her for understanding the rules swiftly. Proceeding through their game and executing maneuvers back and forth, Scorpio ends up fully replenishing his life points while Cana is left at one final life point. Subsequently, Cana is given the opportunity to execute a strategy that consists of her summoning an S-class Mage, an illusion of her father, Gildarts Clive.[148] She manages to use this trump card to turn the tables on Scorpio and defeats him with ease. As the battlefield and the summoned characters vanish, she sends the Celestial Spirit back to his own world with the Banishment Key given to her by Hisui.[149]
Sun Village arc
Enjoying their reconstructed guild building, Cana, along with other Fairy Tail girls, relaxes in the bathhouse. She states that nobody would want to work when they have such place, in spite of Fairy Tail being busy with all the request they are receiving after the Grand Magic Games. Afterwards, Cana teases Lucy as she asks her whether it is true if Natsu grabbed her breasts and then claims that she also "wants to have a taste", copying Natsu's action. The girls then discuss Erza's whereabouts. Lucy notes that she thought she had seen Erza in the bath, however, the red haired girl turns out to be Flare Corona, much to Cana's displeasure, who readies to attack her. However, Lucy stops her and tries to persuade the girls that Flare is in fact not a bad person; as proof, Flare wraps her hair around Cana's body and washes her. She then explains that Raven Tail has disbanded so she has nowhere to go, however, when Lucy questions whether they should ask the master, Flare states that she isn't interested in Fairy Tail, leaving the other girls dumbfounded as to why she is there.[150]
Tartaros arc
In the guildhall, Cana sits at a table with Macao, Romeo and Wakaba as the former man orders alcohol for them.[151] A short while later, several severely poisoned guildmates are brought to the guild after inhaling a powerful poison. As they rest in their beds, Cana is seen comforting a teary-eyed Wendy.[152]
While the guild members wish to go after Tartaros, the Dark Guild responsible for their suffering of their comrades, they lack the information necessary to do so. Unable to find the previous members of the Magic Council, their only known targets, due to secrecy regarding their locations, Cana claims that such a truth puts them in a deadlock until Loke arrives and states that he knows where the council members are.[153] With his information, the guild readies for the attack by breaking off into teams. Soon after Makarov gives a motivational speech, which Cana listens to, the guild heads out.[154]
Standing by at the guild, Cana listens on as the teams regrettably report that they were too late to rescue the various former Council members.[155] After learning of Face and it's details, Cana and the rest of the Fairy Tail members anxiously discuss their next course of action.[156]
When Wendy, Lucy and Carla return with the news that they were unable to find Natsu, Erza and Mirajane, Cana expresses her worry about Lisanna and Elfman, noting that they haven't heard from them. Soon after, Happy returns to the guild with the news that the ex-chairman of the council is a traitor and that Natsu, Erza and Mirajane have been captured aboard the guild's mobile headquarters. Cana believes that they will therefore be impossible to find, until Levy claims that she will work on a way to do it. As such, everyone prepares to invade Tartaros' headquarters until Elfman suddenly arrives at the guild.[157] Hearing his story about failing to save the former councilor and Lisanna getting captured, Cana calls him pathetic, asking why he returned to the guild rather than going after them. As he tells her he lost sight of them, she berates him further, asking how that is possible that they escaped him when he has the Magic to turn into a giant beast. As everyone tells her to calm down, she expresses her frustration further over the ordeal. Hearing that Elfman is going to rest, Cana continues pondering the situation.[158]
Feeling something is off with him, Cana goes to see Elfman and arrives as he is staring at an activated Lacrima, something she is immediately suspicious of. Immediately pinned to the ground, Cana is told by a furious Elfman not to get in his way as she realizes the Lacrima is a bomb. Unable to shout for help, Cana theorizes that Elfman is being controlled and notes that this means trouble with the bomb set to go off.[159]
Determined to save her guild, Cana traps Elfman in a card and proceeds to do the same to the entire guild just before the bomb explodes. Telling the Exceed about the bomb, Cana has them take the cards containing the guild members and escape. Taken into the enemy's headquarters, Cana releases herself and her guildmates from the cards in preparation for an all-out assault. However, she stays back as she observes Elfman coming to his senses and tells him not to feel sorry for himself as they have to save his sisters.[160] Macao questions Cana's motives for bringing the injured along, with the woman reminding him that they would have been blown up along with the guild if she had left them. Elfman overhears their conversation, apologizing and blaming himself, but Cana interrupts him as she tells him to stop lecturing himself. Looking towards his direction, Cana informs him that if he has time to feel like garbage, he should also be helping them get rid of their enemies. Shortly enough, Cana witnesses Erza's entrance when the female Mage creates a rather massive hole within Cube.[161] After being freed from Mard Geer's Alegria, Cana finds her and her guildmates in the wreckage of Tartaros' former floating fortress and expresses her amazement at the fact that Cube suddenly exploded.[162]
Some time later, Cana worriedly looks around when she hears a loud noise in the distance.[163] She soon realizes that its source is Acnologia, "the winged despair" and watches all the destruction with tears in her eyes, wondering what they have done to deserve this.[164] She rejoices, however, when the Face operation is cancelled due to the Dragons emerging and destroying the artifacts.[165]
Avatar arc
One year after the war against Tartaros and the disbandment of the Fairy Tail Guild, Cana receives a letter from Lucy requesting her presence at the old guildhall. Choosing to attend, Cana runs into Lucy, Natsu and Wendy in Magnolia, and overhears Lucy saying that the old members might not return, especially if they've moved on with their lives. Cana slings an arm around the Celestial Spirit Mage and greets them all, comforting Lucy by saying that no-one would forget in such a short amount of time. After stating that she had some good experiences learning how to live outside of the guild, Cana takes Lucy's hand and leads her to the destroyed guildhall, where many of the old members have gathered. After a touching reunion, Cana and her friends announce the revival of Fairy Tail.[166]
Alvarez Empire arc
When the former members of Fairy Tail gather to rebuild the guild, the topic of who the next guild master will be is brought up; Wakaba considers Gildarts for the position, but Cana reminds him that he would be no good because he is constantly travelling. She then goes on to say that no matter who takes the lead, it won't be the same, because Makarov was the only person able to keep all of the members in line.[167] When the reconstruction effort turns into a full-scale brawl, Cana is among the first members to participate;[168] although Erza immediately stops all fighting and successfully quiets Cana and the others down, thus acquiring herself the position of the seventh Master. Immediately afterwards, a strange man appears before the guild, and Cana feels like there is something familiar about him, although she can't remember his name. The man goes on to tell the Mages that Makarov needs their help.[169]
When Juvia asks Cana whether she's seen Gray anywhere, Cana jokingly says that she drank him up; Juvia, taking this statement literally, tries to search for Gray in her mouth. Gajeel then approaches the two, and states they must form a "B-Team", which reminds Cana of their team during the Grand Magic Games. Gajeel says the team's purpose will be to bring Laxus back, something which surprises Cana, since nobody seems to know the whereabouts of the lightning Mage.[170] Going in search for Laxus and the Thunder God Tribe, Cana and her group arrive at their destination. When Gajeel states they wouldn't stand a chance in a fight against the Alvarez Empire and that he is not even sure an infiltration mission will succeed, Cana is utterly shocked. Levy then arrives, stating that they need separate teams to raise their chances of success, before asking how they could leave her behind.[171] Later, they all head to the Pegasus Village hot springs to relax. There they meet up with Ichiya, who tells them that Laxus and the Thunder God Tribe have joined Blue Pegasus, something which astounds Cana.[172] Later, Cana and the others barge into Blue Pegasus' guild building, where she shouts, after Lisanna claims that they're taking the Christina, that she's always wanted to ride on the Magical Bomber.[173]
Later, on Ichiya's airship Christina, Cana and the B-team watch as Laxus saves Team Natsu and the others from Ajeel's sand tidal wave. Cana shouts through the speakers of the ship for Mest to teleport their group into the the ship, something which Mest does accordingly. Ajeel sends a large sand stream towards the ship, saying that he won't let them escape, but Laxus stops his attack with a lightning blast. They all then leave the location, and along with her comrades, Cana watches happily as Makarov bursts into tears saying that Fairy Tail is the best family one can ask for.[174] As a feast occurs in the rebuilt Fairy Tail Guild to celebrate Makarov's return, Cana yells for some booze, as usual,[175] and then dances with Wakaba and Macao, all of them visibly drunk.[176] She then offers Lucy something to drink, laughing and cheering as the other woman chugs it down.[177] When Natsu declares war against the Alvarez Empire solely for his guild's survival, Cana is among the members visibly supporting this decision,[178] and when everyone gets pumped about the impending conflict, Cana comments on how guilds are the best, with Laxus beside her agreeing. Suddenly, Mavis appears in the guild hall, intending to tell Cana and the other Fairy Tail members what she knows about Fairy Heart, Lumen Histoire's real name, her own sin, and her relationship with Zeref, as well as their common pursuit of The One Magic.[179]
After Mavis ends her story, Cana is visibly shocked at the true nature of Fairy Heart.[180] Shortly afterwards, Makarov starts explaining what he knows about their opponents, and when he mentions Dimaria Yesta being a female knight, Erza wonders whether she's even a wizard, and Cana points out that she sounds exactly like her.[181] Later, Cana is quick to notice as Alvarez sneaks past Warren's sensors and mounts their attack,[182] and, while walking through the streets of Magnolia, is shocked to notice Jupiter being fired against the enemy forces.[183] Eventually Cana finds Lucy with one of the Spriggan 12 and rushes to her aid, using her cards to try and fend off Brandish μ before joking about Lucy's naked state. Lucy reacts to the comment by using her Aries Star Dress, and together the duo prepare to face Brandish.[184] A short while later, Cana is caught in Ajeel's Sand World and begins to cough after inhaling much of the sand.[185] To her surprise, however, the sandstorm quickly disperses, leaving Lucy to question where Brandish disappeared off to. The duo soon finds Brandish, who is apparently having a hay fever, due to the raging sandstorm having stirred up all the pollen throughout Magnolia. Cana takes this opportunity to sneak up behind the sneezing Brandish, hitting the Shield of Spriggan at the back of the head, making her fall unconscious to the ground. Although a little bit confused by the recent events, Cana and Lucy then leave for the guild with the fainted Brandish in tow.[186][187]
Later, Cana goes down to the guild's basement with Lucy, where she reprimands Wakaba and Macao for their near-perverted treatment of Brandish; after Brandish refuses to answer any of Lucy's questions and instead puts forward the idea to kill her, Cana tells Lucy to give up.[188] A bit after, after returning to the upstairs, Cana is given the order to stay with Lucy and watch over Brandish while the other fighters mobilize with the other advancing Fiore guilds.[189]
When Cana and Lucy return to the basement, they come across Marin Hollow attempting to murder an unconscious Brandish. Dealing with Marin, the pair take Brandish to the medical bay. Cana explains to Brandish that she and Lucy were shocked to find Marin strangling her, and that Cana's reasoning for saving their prisoner was in order to obtain information. Cana pokes fun at Brandish suggesting that if she really wanted to be tortured, it could probably be arranged. After Lucy convinces their prisoner to at least answer questions regarding Layla on her terms, Cana objects, arguing that Brandish is pushing her luck, but relents when Lucy insists that it is fine. As Cana, along with Porlyurisca, leaves, she reminds Lucy that they're only shouting distance away should something happen.[190]
After Happy (holding Natsu) mysteriously rushes past them and into the infirmary, Cana and Porlyusica re-enter the room to discover what happened, where the former notices Aquarius, and is told by the Celestial Spirit to leave the questions for another time. Cana then watches as Porlyusica examines an unconscious Natsu and discovers that he has an Anti-Ethernano Tumor that will shortly kill him; Cana asks if Wendy or Sherria can remove the tumor, but Porlyusica responds that they lack the skill. Cana then expresses mild shock when Brandish asks to have her cuffs removed so that she can use her Magic to shrink the tumor to a non-lethal size.[191]
Magic and Abilities
Magic Card (魔法の札, マジックカード, Majikku Kādo): A type of Holder Magic which revolves around the use of Magic Cards, which can produce a variety of effects,[1] such as generating both abiotic[192] and biotic things.[193] Cana's cards can be used for offense, with her fighting style having been described as "all-round": she can employ them as long-range weapons by throwing them at her enemies,[1] and has displayed considerable accuracy in doing so;[194] she is also said to be capable of combining her cards to generate particular effects (something which was extensively shown in the anime[195]).[1] Aside from combat, Magic Card seems to possess other avenues for usage: Cana apparently can track down people to some degree through the cards' use, as shown when she placed several of them on the ground in an attempt to pinpoint Mystogan's location, but to no effect, leaving the effectiveness and the conditions of the cards' tracking power unknown.[196] In addition, the cards can reproduce the effects from a variety of different forms of Magic, such as Water Magic[192] or Sleep Magic,[22] coming in as very versatile, if used the right way. Cana's cards can also be linked to specific individuals, allowing her to gain information about their status[26] and location,[197] as well as to communicate with them.[198]
- Shuriken Cards: Cana is capable of throwing cards as projectiles at her enemies.[1] These thrown cards seem to possess cutting power, being shown piercing targets as if they were shuriken. Cana tends to throw several of them at the same time, likely to strike a larger area or to increase the chance to hit.[194] (Unnamed)
- Cards Volley: An enhanced ranged attack, in which Cana throws several cards at once at her target in an arched formation. The barrage was redirected by Bluenote Stinger, so its full effects are unknown. However, the deflected cards hit the ground with enough strength to shatter it, lifting up a cloud of debris, implying that either possesses great blunt power or explosive properties.[199] (Unnamed)
- Cards Wardrobe: By having a large amount of her cards float around her and hide her upper body from sight, Cana was shown capable of changing outfits in mere moments, highly reminiscent of Requip.[44]
- Sexy Lady Card (セクシーお姉さんカード Sekushī Oneesan Kādo): One of Cana's single card attacks. She throws a card portraying a curvaceous woman in a skimpy bikini at her target. This will prompt said woman, among others, to come to life from the card, all sporting similar curves and attires. These women will then surround the target and proceed to hug them and rub themselves against them. Opponents who are either attracted by beautiful women or shy when confronted with them are likely to be frozen in place, becoming unable to react properly.[193] In the anime, the generated amount of women is much greater than the manga counterpart.[200]
- Woman Wall: The amount of beautiful women produced by this card is enough for them to create a living wall by stacking themselves one on the other's shoulders, surrounding the target and multiplying the primary seduction effect. While this might be ineffective as a serious form of defense, someone not willing to hurt women might be seriously hindered by it.[200] (Unnamed)
- The Prayer's Fountain (祈り子の噴水 Īnoriko no Funsui): A single card spell, Cana places a card on the ground, summoning forth several beams of water from it, which strike in all directions. Cana warned Lucy Heartfilia that the water produced by this card is dangerous to touch, but the effects of touching it are unknown. However, water-based Celestial Spirits may be summoned within it without apparent consequences, as the water was shown acting as a medium for Aquarius. As the name itself suggests, in the manga the card bears the drawing of a fountain on it;[201] in the anime, however, this was replaced with an abstract drawing, portraying a watery entity with its face appearing from many currents.[200]
- Sleep Card: Another single card spell, Cana pulls out a card portraying a cartoonish, sleeping ram, together with the word "Sleep", and activates it with her Magic. Such an action immediately put Lucy Heartfilia to sleep.[22] The specific mechanics that are behind the card's usage are unknown, as well as how it works in detail or if there are limitations to its usage, but its basics seem to be the same as Sleep Magic. (Unnamed)
- Help Lucy Card: A card adorned by a cartoonish drawing of a distressed Lucy Heartfilia, plus the word "Help" on the top and "Lucy" on the lower part. The card visibly shines if Lucy finds herself in danger[26] and, if need be, a prominent arrow can appear from the card, pointing in Lucy's direction, and thus allowing Cana to pinpoint her location.[197] (Unnamed)
- Call Card: A Magic Card bearing a stylized picture of a specific person, which will allow its bearer to communicate with said person. (Unnamed)
- Call Gildarts Card: A card which Cana was entrusted with by Mirajane on her father Gildarts Clive's behalf. This card, bearing the picture of a cartoonish Gildarts together with the words "Call" and "Gildarts", is said to be linked to another card which Gildarts carries around, and to possess the ability to "send it Cana's wishes", allowing her to somehow remain in contact with Gildarts and, if need be, call for his assistance. It was swiftly destroyed by Cana.[198] (Unnamed)
- Call Cana Card: Cana gave this card to Wendy Marvell for communication purposes.[93]
- Call Warren Card: Cana gave this card to Elfman Strauss for communication purposes.[202]
- Card Dimension: Cana uses her cards to trap others in another dimension inside the cards themselves and can free them at will whenever she sees fit. This spell was strong enough to imprison various strong Fairy Tail members in it, Makarov Dreyar included, when an explosion was about to eradicate Fairy Tail.[203]
- Thunderbolt's Fate (落雷の運命 Rakurai no Unmei): One of Cana's multiple card spells, she places three of her cards, the "Lightning" (which has multiple, yellow and green lightning on it), "Reverse Tower" (drawn as an orange and blue tower, on bright light sky, with yellow clouds) and "Lovers" (with black and white cats hugging, and a red heart between them) together in her hand. Those cards interact with each other, striking multiple opponents around her with massive bolts of lightning.[204]
- Summoned Lightning: A multiple card spell, Cana combines three of her cards, "Heaven" (a blue and purple card, with a picture resembles mustache man, with a sky circle on his head), "Reverse Death" (red, white and black human silhouette drawing on it) and "Mountain" (a landscape drawing with multiple green mountains on the blue sky), in her hand, after which green lightning bolts are fired towards her opponent in an arched trajectory.[205] This spell can be used as a trap-oriented version, in which several cards are left on the ground in a circular formation. Everyone who steps foot inside said formation will be electrocuted by green lightning.[200]
- Explosion Cards: Cana's multiple, long distance card spell. She has several unnamed cards seemingly float before her in a curved line. This formation prompts a burst of flames to appear, which is sent flying in her target's direction.[52]
- Wind Edge: Cana's multiple, long distance card spell. She pulls out two cards: "Heaven" and one unnamed (with a green, wind-like drawing on it) and combines them in one hand, and with the other one, when she waves it in the direction of the spell, it activates. This action generates an ascending air blast from the ground several meters away from her, which can strike multiple opponents at the same time.[206] (Unnamed)
- Sun's Strength (太陽の力 Taiyō no Chikara): Cana's multiple, long distance card spell. She throws a few of the same, unnamed Magic Cards, each with a flame-like drawing on each of them. These cards, after being thrown, change into flame covered bullets which explode upon contact.[207]
- Icicle: Cana's multiple, long distance card spell. She uses three unnamed cards, combines them in her hand, and waves them at her opponent. This creates multiple ice bullets that closely resemble icicles, which both hit and freeze the target.[207]
Fairy Glitter (妖精の輝き, フェアリーグリッター, Fearī Gurittā): One of Fairy Tail's three great Magics, which was momentarily bestowed upon Cana by Mavis Vermilion.[208] Cana's ability to use this spell was manifested by a dark tattoo imprinted on her right forearm, consisting of Fairy Tail's symbol surrounded by a sharp, concave design, resembling an arrowhead, or a slender triangular shield.[209] To activate it, Cana first gathers light around her right arm, her tattoo shining as she does so. She then proceeds to chant the incantation: "Gather! O river of light that guides the fairies! Shine! In order to perish the fangs of evil! Fairy Glitter!". This prompts a large, bright halo of light to surround the target, which rapidly constricts around and heavily damages them.
Fortune Telling: Using the very same cards she employs for her Magic Card, Cana seems capable of reading fortunes, similar to real forms of fortune-telling performed through tarot cards, and appears to be fairly skilled at it, having foreseen Lucy Heartfilia would met a special person, something which did happen.[210] Cana started developing this peculiar ability during her younger days in Fairy Tail, when she desperately longed to confess to Gildarts Clive that she was his daughter, but was stopped by his continuous absences from the guild and by her own shyness: in order to know when Gildarts would be back, she started practicing fortune-telling, something which eventually led her to take up Magic Card as her primary Magic.[211]
Alcohol Tolerance: Cana is known for possessing immense alcohol tolerance: she is shown remaining sober after drinking entire barrels of alcohol by herself,[17] and she's also responsible for 30% Fairy Tail's yearly alcohol consumption.[1] So far, the only instances in which she actually got drunk was at the beginning of the Tenrou Island arc, in which depression, together with several bottles of alcohol, led to her collapsing in an alleyway and almost dying, had it not been for Lucy's intervention, and when she entered a drinking contest with Bacchus during the Grand Magic Games.[10]
Enhanced Strength: Cana seems to possess deceptively high physical strength, being shown lifting large barrels full of alcohol above her head with just her hands without apparent effort.[17]
Immense Magic Power: As noted by Mavis, Cana possesses high amounts of latent Magic Power. When using Fairy Glitter on the Magic Power Finder, she was capable of surpassing Jura Neekis' own score, overloading the device with her power as she did so.[212]
Equipment
Magic Cards: Cana always carries around with her a deck of cards, which she uses to perform her Magic Card.[1] The back of all these cards bears a dark cross with heart-shaped arms (reminiscent of Heart Kreuz's logo) surrounded by an intricate motif,[213] while the front part houses a different image for each of them, reminiscent of those found on real-life tarot cards, of which they are based upon.[214]
Artificial Keys:
- Celestial Spirit Banishment Key(former): Banishes the Scorpion, Scorpio.[146]

Later, Cana has fun playing around with the members of Quatro Cerberus, while Rocker asks if she's in her underwear, to which she replies that it's a swimsuit. Later, after Natsu has destroyed the resort, Cana, along with the Quatro Cerberus members, lays unconscious in the remains of the resort.[230]

- According to her guild card, she likes alcoholic drinks and dislikes non-alcoholic drinks.[1]
- From the Volume 16 Limited Edition: Sorcerer Interview, the best quality of Fairy Tail according to Cana is that the alcoholic drinks from the guild taste really good. The most difficult job she has taken involved taking a stroll in the desert; quoting "For a second there, I thought I was going to die in that desert because there were no alcoholic drinks.". She wishes to be a mistress in a bar in the future. She has a good relationship with Gray and Macao.[234]
- Cana's name came from Arcana of the tarot cards.[235]
Quotes
- (To herself in front of Mavis' grave) "It doesn't matter if I don't become an S-Class Mage anymore and it doesn't matter if I can't tell my father how I feel. I don't care about any of that. I just want to protect my friends."[236]
