White Wizard redirects to a disambiguation page. For the pseudo founder, see Faris. For the second model, see Athena II.

Athena (アテナ Atena) is an Alchemical Doll created by Duke Barbaroa on the request of his mentor Elefseria in order to slay the Dragon Gods, having become known as the Negative Legacy (負の遺産 Fu no Isan) of the Magic World for the devastation she caused in her fights with Dragons.[1][2] On Ishgar, she was the founder of Rebellious and the original White Wizard (白魔導士 Shiro Madōshi) who rivals Zeref in pure power.[3][4] In her desire to be human, she left the White Cult and joined Gold Owl due to a promise from its current Guild Master, the fake Duke Barbaroa, who himself desired to complete and weaponize her against the Five Dragon Gods.[5][6] But after the defeat of Viernes, she began to live with Elefseria, her consciousness having been transferred into the body of Athena II.[7]

Appearance[]

Athena Appearance

Athena's Original Appearance

Athena is an Alchemical Doll who takes form of a voluptuous woman with long flowing light-colored hair. She wears a form-fitting suit of white armor and long robes.[8]

After the defeat of Gold Owl and Viernes' death, Athena's consciousness moved into Athena II's body. Later, Athena removes the visor.[9]

Personality[]

Athena is a polite person who talks with the Signario Sisters in a friendly manner and respectfully addresses Duke Barbaroa as "Master". She is confident in Gold Owl finding another way to upgrade her.[10]

Athena typically thinks purely logical without much sympathy, accidentally destroying a town while accomplishing her mission, being confused by Elefseria’s request to limit herself as she claimed would be inefficient.[11]

Athena desires to have emotions to feel and be complete, however Lucy believes that she does have emotions but simply doesn’t understand them.[12]

History[]

At least 100 years prior to X793, Athena was created through the use of Alchemy by Elefseria's pupil and the Guild Master of Gold Owl; Duke Barbaroa. She was originally created as a weapon for the self-defense of persecuted Wizards, though more specifically, to fight against the Dragons Elefseria’s Guild faced. However, she caused so much collateral damage to civilian towns with little remorse for her actions due to being unable to understand emotions and being dedicated to her mission, for which she became known as the Negative Legacy of the Magic World. Elefseria attempted to ask Duke to improve on her, but he had just died to an Alchemy failure. Deeming her to be too dangerous, Elefseria sealed her in a Magic Barrier until he could find another genius Alchemist like Duke who could limit her power.[13][14]

However, Athena was able to escape the barrier, and with Duke having passed away and unwanted by Elefseria, Athena wandered the world in hopes of discovering the emotions she couldn't understand, eventually ending up on the continent of Ishgar. While attempting to live her life, Athena attracted followers (at least some being speculated to have feared the recently forming Black Magic-cult Avatar and been drawn to her White Magic), unintentionally founding the White Magic-cult Rebellious, her followers choosing to worship her of their own volition. [15] The cult is devoted to the "White Creed," which believes that an over abundance of Magic Power will bring about destruction and chaos, has to be limited, and that having too much power will eventually turn one “black” like Zeref.[16] Their goal is to change the world into a “White Nothingness," essentially restricting and erasing the use of Magic.[17] While she might not have preached the White Creed, Athena seemingly did contribute to Rebellious in some way as she considered recruiting the White Dragon Slayer Sting Eucliffe to join the cult.[18]

Athena was unsatisfied with her position as she still desired for emotions. Some time later, an illusion based on the concept of Duke, created by Viernes to act as his "voice," came to Athena and offered to help her gain emotions, prompting her to return with him to join Gold Owl, which Viernes' will had possessed.[19][20][21]

According to Athena, after she joined Gold Owl, Viernes used her power. While it isn't directly explained what this is referring to, the concept of Duke is shown to be capable of using Whiteout, a form of White Magic Athena is shown to use, implying he either learned, was given, or somehow borrowed the Magic.[22] [23] The concept of Duke claimed that Athena was inadequately constructed, a mere Doll, and lacks emotion. However, he claimed he could make her human and, based on his initial proposal, alchemize her emotions using Dragon Slayer Magic, which would also complete her in his view. To achieve this goal, Gold Owl pursued the Dogra Cores, and then began pursuing Dragon Slayers from Fairy Tail when they interfered with the attempt to obtain the Dogra Cores.[24][25]

Synopsis[]

Gold Owl arc[]

At the Gold Owl guildhall, Athena explains to an annoyed Ennie Signario that the paths of Magic and Alchemy have something in common while confirming to Luso Signario that she is indeed made from Alchemy. On the other hand, she agrees with Duke Barbaroa that there are other means of completing her after the loss of the Dogra Cores.[5]
